I forgot to mention about foveated rendering - apologies - this reduces the quality of the image in your peripheral vision/out of the sweet spot, which reduces latency, however it clearly is something that not everyone wants/needs, and hopefully we will get the option of turning this off at some point. There has been a potential fix suggested for the audio issues some people are experiencing: To fix the audio issues, under audio in the steam menu, change audio output device from "headset" to "manual." Also, if you are experiencing crashes, there has been a suggestion that you need to check your ethernet connection is set to "public" and not "private." Mine was set to private, so I have changed to public and will be testing it over the coming days. Thanks all 👍
So glad I got Steam Link. Always had issues with Air Link and didn't want to buy Virtual Desktop. With Air Link, it was literally impossible to play Skyrim or Fallout VR. Both games would stream horribly for no reason, and I didn't have a solution. Tried it with Steam Link, and it both looks and plays fantastically. Very happy with it.
@@Sourcecode01 I have recently got into no man's sky vr, I absolutely love it but have spent too long optimising the graphics. I think I'm there now, but I will have to check it out using steam link too, as it has more fixed foveated rendering it could make it easier to run whilst keeping the central portion of the view clearer, thanks 👍
@@DayDreamerVR I'm 99% sure it's the Desktop+ app in Steam. After some Googlin' I found that result. I now have it installed and have those desktop icons (and a plus symbol). Definitely worth mentioning, perhaps also along with the Dashboard > "VR Dashboard on System Button" setting to "On" so that pressing the little 3-bars button will allow the user to open the main Steam Link page that has those desktop buttons for very quick access to your computer. 👍
1:13 i am having quite an issue with this, when i click the "vr settings" button the button itself acts like i click it but nothing shows, i can see my desktop's and library perfectly fine (an issue ive had to solve before) but i cant see or click the buttons for resizing them or floating them in the world - ???
I was playing some Audioshield, a classic VR title (beatsaber like), but whenever I used either SteamVR or Oculus's Air Link, I would get stuttering/delay in my movement, I am now of course using Steam Link exclusively and the settings you recommended for beatsaber worked great for it. Thank you! TL;DR: This guide is good, listen.
I have a problem where i mucked around with a setting in steam vr and now it has delayed everything by like 20 seconds and slowed down everything. And i’ve been painfully trying to find the option i messed with so I can make the vr work properly again but i just can’t find it. It’s been driving me insane please help.
I would recommend deleting steam VR in steam, and reinstall it, and hope that resets your settings, it shouldn't affect any games etc, hope that helps 👍
Some great information here. I’ve found a decent sweet spot for my system with a 7900xtx over 6e of: 220 bitrate 1280 encode 90 fps Resolution game depending but I typically leave it at 100% Let me know if you have any recommendations.
It will also help you get a smoother image as there is less demand on your PC and headset, and there will be less latency. I think it would have been good to have a choice for it on/off, as there are definitely some benefits and some negatives depending on your use. I don't mind it personally 👍
@@DayDreamerVR exactly, also you dont even get a crisp image in your peripheral view with your real eyes anyway, or idk maybe i should see a doctor. i do agree on having a choice to flip it on and off tho but i'd definitely just leave it on since it feels pretty natural to me
You're back!! Where did you go dude. Your potential is sky high. Please make more videos. I see you changing your channel to not VR specific but PC tech in general. You would have so many subscribers.
Thanks, I really would love to do more videos, and am hoping that as the channel grows I have more options to start doing this more full time than in my spare time. I have considered covering wider tech, and I probably will at some point, thanks for the comment 😀

Are you launching Steam VR on your PC first, then trying to open the app in your Quest 2 and connect? Or is this issue when you click connect it won't connect/load the Steam VR home environment? I don't know a fix at the moment, but if I find anything I'll update 👍
Great video! I have a question...since the Quest 3 max resolution per eye is 2064x2208, is there any use in setting a higher res on Steam-Link (e.g. 3008 pixels for Project Cars)? That would only make sense with higher-end visors, correct? Thanks
For best image quality you need the resolution set at around 3000 x 3000 due to the process the software does to correct for the shape of the lenses (you lose some pixels in this process). The problem is with steam link is that the encode resolution has a fixed limit which is a bit lower than needed, this means only so many pixels are sent to the headset even if you set the resolution much higher on steam. So if you set it as high as 3000 x 3000, it will be more demanding on your PC but won't send that resolution to the headset, giving you almost no visual benefit. Virtual Desktop can send more pixels to the headset, and should therefore give the best image with the Quest 3, or Oculus Link will also be pretty good. Setting the resolution higher in PCVR headsets like the PICO Neo 3 Link does have the full benefit. Steam Link however does use fixed foveated rendering which means more pixels are in the centre of your view than the outside edges, some people prefer this as it helps reduce latency, some people hate the slightly blurrier edges.
I don’t know if I’m talking about something wrong but am I correct to say that when you use air link then steam vr your essentially processing twice as much but if you use the steam link app your connecting directly without the meta software required?
They are very different devices. If you want to game, and use it for work or to watch content, then the Quest 3 is the best option. If you just want to use a device to have a larger screen, then the Xreal Air will do that 👍
There are a few ways to do it, but potentially the best way is to install the app Sunshine on the Steam Deck, and then sideload Moonlight onto the Quest. More info can be found here: www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/175rsxo/display_steam_deck_on_quest_3/ Hope that helps 👍
Using Wifi 6 rock solid 800mbps and both Airlink and Steam Link run beautifully but, I prefer Steam Link for most games. Still sucks I have to use Airlink for a few games as Steam Link looks much better over Airlink. Less artifacting for sure.
Yeah, hopefully we'll get the option to turn it off at some point, could be better if really trying to make the most of lower latency, but otherwise it does reduce the image quality out of the sweet spot
@HotFiya05 yeah, it's good for keeping latency low and keeping the demand on the pc lower, but image quality suffers at the edges. Would be good to have a slider to determine how much fixed foveated rendering kicks in
When I try running Steam Link on my desktop with AMD card I always get the same error you get at 8:52. It works on my nVidia laptop though. Did you find a workaround for that issue?
It has been suggested that it was because my ethernet connection was set to "private" and it needs to be set as "public." I have changed this settings and will be testing it over the coming days, hope that helps 🤞
For me the biggest problem is . I have 0 or 2% haptic feedback in my controllers when playing beatsaber or synth riders. 97% of the time no haptic feedback at all. That problem I don't have with Virtuel desktop
I am trying to download steam link in Meta Quest 2 but i dont know why there's no download button. its only said its purchased, but i havent got the app downloaded in the system yet
Weird, I just took a look at mine on the Quest, and went to the store and it should stay "start" in the store once it is installed. This is a noob question as I am new to vr and using a occulus 2 on a pc that has a rtx 4060 and i5-12400f. First game I tried was propagation vr through steamvr and the fps and quality on my desktop is amazing during the game but my vr quality is bad. It feels like its at a lower fps and hz. Like there is a delay with my hand movement but the streaming to my desktop there is no delay. Is that just how vr is or am I missing a setting? I would think it would look at least a little better and run a little closer to how my game is running on my desktop. Edit: also the occulus app says to hook the cable to a 3.0 usb port but it is a 3.0 usb port...
So VR should be a smooth experience in the headset, just like on the PC. So you are using a usb cable to connect to the PC through Oculus Link. I would get fpsvr, and then when your are in the Oculus Link home page (before opening a game, open Steam VR, and then open your game from in Steam VR. This way you can look at/open fpsVR and look at the performance stats. You need to make sure that your CPU and GPU are managing to meet the frame time (graph in fpsvr should be green). You also need to check in fpsvr that your gpu and cpu usage isn't maxed out near 90-100%. You can also see if any frames are dropped. With all of this info you can then adjust your resolution and frame rate so your system can cope with it. You should also test your usb link in the Oculus app, hopefully it confirms you are using USB 3.0 (that the cable and USB port are 3.0) and the connection speed. I hope this helps and hope you manage to sort it 👍
@@DayDreamerVR the cable is the original oculus cable and my pc says it’s 3.0. But the app says that it is not 3.0 but I am using a small usb adapter to be able to connect it to my pc. I ordered a longer cable that already has a usb but won’t be in until Friday. I still didn’t think an adapter would change anything though.
@@MagicalAlpaca Yeah, unfortunately if the adapter isn't 3.0 then it will reduce it to whatever USB standard it is (2.0/1.0). In your Oculus install folder, you should find a tool called the Oculus Debug Tool, if you open that then you can also select performance graphs at the bottom of the tool. This will also help you to see what is going on performance wise. I hope the cable manages to sort it for you though 👍
plugging an ethernet cable from your pc to your routeur, and desactivate your wifi and activate your ethernet connection, in your headset connect to ethernet pc connection
My steam link kept crashing as well. It turned out that My ethernet connection was set to private, instead of public. I guess it was just shutting down steam vr and air link as well. try checking that out if you keep getting crashes.
@@DayDreamerVR it's wild. The audio is there in air link, but not steam link. I switched the audio devices in the desktop tab, as well as the audio section VR settings. I'm not sure what the issue is. Maybe zero cal just isn't compatible.
There has been a potential fix suggested for the audio issues some people are experiencing: To fix the audio issues, under audio in the steam menu, change audio output device from "headset" to "manual." I don't know if this will also work with audio output, could be worth switching that to manual. Hope that helps 👍
Great breakdown, thank you. Any idea if the frame rate and render resolution settings affect flat games in the same way? I'm trying to get flat games working nicely on a big ol' virtual screen, but im not so sure what's happening.
The settings might affect running a flat screen game over the desktop view, but the Steam VR environment takes very little to run it so it shouldn't have that much of an impact. If you are experiencing latency or other issues I would keep the overlay setting I mention as High, but then drop the target bandwidth and see if that helps. Hope you manage to get it sorted 👍
There are a couple of things that could be causing this. Try changing your network connection from private to public. If it then works then the issue is likely your firewall blocking the app, so it is then worth checking app firewall permissions. Make sure your headset doesn't have any outstanding system updates, and update if you do. Make sure your GPU is on the latest software. Hope one of these helps and you get it sorted asap 👍
Do you know why changing refresh rate to 120hz is not working? Like, i set it to 120hz in Steam Link settings, but Debug Graph is still showing 72hz HMD refresh rate. 120 hz setting is switched on in the Quest system settings too.
i am having some issues getting the meta quest pro controllers to function properly on 2D flat games on the big theater when in the STEAM LINK App on Quest Pro. i am using Oculous connect as the launching bridge between headset and PC headset and PC are connected via usb. any ideas how to get controllers to work right?
Hi, sorry you've been having this issue, I've done some searching online but can't find the same issue or a solution. It might be worth asking on a discord channel such as MRTV's Quest Pro one which can be found on the link below. Hope you manage to get it sorted 👍 discord.com/invite/NxaERZdt
Does the render window on the pc effect the performance in the headset? People say it doesnt but i swear i have gotten better performance by taking measures, such as reducing my monitor resloltion or hiding the render window. How can it be that i run my headset at say 80hz and the game windows is running at 120 hz and there is no impact from that? It makes no sense nor can i get a consistent result from my testing
It luckily isn't rendering it seperately twice, and usually it won't match the refresh rate of your monitor as far as I am aware-for example if you have your monitor at 144hz but vr at 72 you would see a new frame once every two frames on your monitor. That's an easy frame rate to compare but if it was 90hz in VR and 144 on your monitor then each vr frame will show the next time the monitor refreshes after the VR frame was rendered/presented. It will likely still see a very small amount of extra load having it on your monitor, but it will be small. If your monitor or monitors are stuck at their full refresh rate all the time with a high resolution then that alone will put extra load on your system. So if you lower the resolution or frame rate of your monitor that could save some gpu/cpu etc for VR. Hope that helps 👍
So everything is alright mostly, apart from the video quality. because everytime I load up steam link wiressly the video quality is so terrible and I can barely read and see stuff on screen.
That must be really frustrating, do you have your bitrate and encode res on manual or auto and what does the debug graph show for your bitrate and encode res (shown at the very top left of the performance window on your PC)? Also what resolution have you got it set to? Also what is your gpu (just so I know what settings you could run it at). It should be roughly just as good as Virtual Desktop for image quality
@@Devilsaur With your GPU I would probably recommend using Oculus Link or Virtual Desktop and using a setting called asynchronous space warp or synchronous space warp (asw/ssw). Your PC will do half the frames and your headset will do half of them. This allows you to put your graphics settings higher. Unfortunately steam link doesn't have this option/setting yet. Glad you have managed to get it working though for the moment, enjoy 👍
One other note to if steam is using h265 encoding unless something's different I think this setting is just a target, I'm not sure what it's actually pushing. On wifi 6e I get microstutter after 250mbps. I think the vd creator said that's about as much as the quest 3 chip can decode yet without crazy latency. I'm not sure how people could run it at anymore if that's a quest hardware limitation? Although someone said they have it at 350 but it doesn't go over 250 in reality? Have you tested this with any software overlay?
So i don't know exactly what the limit of H265 with the Quest 3 is, but VD set a maximum of 200Mbps for h265, and steam link sets the max at 350. The higher you go the more latency there is as you have mentioned. I don't get any stuttering at 350 on steam link on a standard WiFi 6 router, but this can be impacted by numerous factors (interference, number of devices on the band, distance from the router etc). Steam link, under vr settings has the option for a performance overlay, if you turn this on and then look at your desktop in steam you can see the performance (bitrate is at the very top left) and I then pin the desktop view to my left controller. Then checking in a game such as Half Life Alyx, it tends to vary mostly from about 290 to 320, but from a quick couple of minutes playing I did see it very briefly go up to 338. In menus etc it seemed to stay around 290Mbps. With steam link, it uses foveated rendering so your peripheral view has less detail, which brings the latency lower than would be expected for 350Mbps. Hope that helps 👍
@@DayDreamerVRinteresting you mentioned you seen yours go above 250 in the debug graph I think your mentioning? I don't see it and someone else online doesn't see it either. They also mentioned they don't see it go above 250. Maybe just went you start out or loading but then mine levels off below 250 slightly. And I get a slight micro when I'm walking in alyx (maybe your teleporting) at 350. I'm using Asus 7800 wifi 6e, 6ghz channels. Curious what all your other steam settings are set to? I also assume your just on 5ghz? With all the wifi issues on quest 3 though I'm just really not sure. There's 80 pages on the quest forum with latency issues.
@@DayDreamerVRyeah really weird I see it go above just briefly after loading but when it settles in game at least two sections I seen it sits below 250 slightly. And the weird extra microstutter it adds when walking in alyx (not teleporting). I also have a 4080.
@@montys8237 yeah, H264 can even go higher, you can set it to 960Mbps by copying and pasting the text "960" into the bitrate section in the Oculus debug tool.
I would recommend having a monitor, even just a basic one so you can launch steamvr if using steam link. Once you're connected to steam link, you can look at your desktop in steamvr and turn off your PC without needing to look at your actual monitor
I am using the Meta Quest 3 with a link cable for simracing games on Steam (AMD GPU). Right now, I do not want to use the OpenXRtool kit and OpenComposite. In most games, I have the option to start in Steam VR or oculus mode. I am uncertain which one is better performance wise. Even when I get the message in oculus mode your HMD is not supported. Is this still better? If so, should the game be started within the Meta environment or in Steam itself? Does anyone have a recommendation and maybe an explanation why? Thank you very much in advance.
That's render latency you're seeing, not total motion to photon latency, which would be far higher. Using the link cable via oculus link gives you minimal total latency
It reduces the latency when it comes to transmission (wired instead of WiFi) but all the other latencies such as rendering, encoding etc will be about the same. I still prefer virtual desktop as you can go to a higher resolution getting closer to the resolution of the Quest 3, but that does increase latency
@@DayDreamerVR No sir, the usb-3 connection can send signals back and forth simultaneously just like displayport/hdmi, so the felt latency will be 2x higher over usb-2 or wireless, on top of the added 10ms transmission latency you're referring to. There's no good reason to use vr wirelessly for anything other than watching videos, in which case can be done natively on headset. I own the official wireless link adaptor and virtual desktop, horrible for gaming, especially competitive gaming.
@@jigglejaggle4732Yes usb 3 has more bandwidth than usb 2, but it is still a compressed stream and nothing like hdmi/display port etc as hdmi/dp has a significantly higher bandwidth so it doesn't have to compress the stream so has no encoding latency. Usb 2, 3 and WiFi has encoding latency due to compressing, and then decoding latency at the headset. WiFi can send data both ways simultaneously. For me, it is not possible to notice any difference when gaming wirelessly or by usb 3. So for roomscale games I definitely prefer wireless. Racing/flight sims I would prefer a true pcvr headset, but if I'm using the Quest 3 then although previously I would have preferred usb, I would now probably just stick with virtual desktop as it is easier and imo the easier and more available options make it better quality. If you are finding wireless poor quality, then it is likely there is an issue with your wireless setup. I'm using WiFi 6, and it works excellently. Some people do just prefer usb though. Best case for me would be a significantly upgraded version of the pico neo 3 link with display port, and usb/wifi options 👍
Thanks 😀 I would probably still stick to the recommended routers in the virtual desktop discord as they are tried and tested for wireless PCVR 👍 (I tried the opal one though and would personally stay away from it as I didn't get good performance for signal. I feel like my games look "foggy" using Steam Link. The app is new enough I havent been able find anyone else saying the same thing. I have a high end PC and wifi 6e. 🤷
As long as your encode resolution is at its maximum, your resolution is reasonably high, and your PC is connected with ethernet and your WiFi is coping with the bitrate, it should be pretty clear. There is however foveated rendering which you can't turn off. This reduces the resolution in your peripheral vision, making it not as clear as the centre of your view, which could be the cause of what you're experiencing, hopefully we'll get the option to turn it off at some point 👍
So it was good until I got half life Alex it’s so laggy it turns off and comes back on when I’m in the game and the resolution is just horrible if 1 pixel I really need help to fix it cause I got this to have fun and wasted 20 dollars on a game that you can’t play sucks so please help me and I can’t even click the menu that’s how bad it is
What graphics card do you have? Are you connected to a 5GHz band on your router with your headset and is your PC connected to the router with an ethernet cable? What router is it that you have? I would recommend keeping the encode res and bitrate in automatic, and set the steam vr resolution to 100% whilst testing. Then I would recommend getting fpsvr and checking in the game that nothing is showing as orange/red and seeing how many fps you are getting and what your gpu and cpu usage is like. You can also check the debug graph from steam link on your desktop, the latency graph is on the bottom half of the graph and your frame rate, and bitrate are at the very top left of the debug window. It can be difficult to find the issues, but it's worth it to keep trying, you can do it and hopefully you'll be playing HLA properly in no time 👍
When I connect to my PC, my headset video is awful and I can’t make anything out, so I can’t even check the VR settings. It allows me to look around but it freezes the picture in place, if that makes sense
I think if you take your headset off, on your desktop you will see the steamvr window which will show your headset is connected, I can't remember exactly how off the top of my head but if you right click the top left of that window on a menu icon or something it allows you to look at settings. If you go to the steamvr tab at the bottom, check what the settings are at. Can I confirm though that your pc is connected by an ethernet cable to your router, your headset is connected over 5GHz on your router, and you are close and in direct line of sight to your router? Also what gpu/pc specs do you have? Hope you manage to sort it 👍
For steam link I would probably put it around 1700x1700 (or roughly whatever that would be) for the resolution, 72fps, bitrate keep on auto, encode res keep on auto. Then see how that performs whilst monitoring something like fpsvr and put the resolution up or down depending on whether your PC is managing it. With a 1060 though I would probably recommend using virtual desktop, and turn on synchronous space warp. This will allow you headset to create half the frames, and your PC the other half, and you will be able to put your graphics settings higher. Hope that helps 👍
Very helpful video explaining some of the settings I wasn't sure about. Also big kudos for recommending an FPSVR. I was looking for an onscreen monitoring software for VR.
@@DinkyRicky My main thoughts are: are you connected to the WiFi router on the 5ghz band? Is your pc connected to the router with an ethernet cable? What GPU do you have (needs to be powerful enough and have encoder, some gpu's don't have an encoder), are you close to your router and nothing blocking it like trying to use vr in another room where signal might not be good enough? Is steam open on your PC and does it show/connect? Have you tried virtual desktop app and does that work okay? Hope you manage to sort it, and I'm happy to try and help 👍
I'm curious what's the correct setting for steam resolution. If you have the slider in the oculus PC app render res set to max. Like you there's a notch on the render res slider at 150%. Is 100 lower than that? Is 150 supersampling or does the notch indicate that's where it should be for the headset?
100% in steam will be whatever you set the resolution to on the oculus slider. They haven't however increased the resolution in the oculus software, so the maximum resoution in the oculus software isn't quite providing the full resolution to the panel, but, the oculus setting does set the encode resolution. So 100% in steam is the same res as in the oculus software, and increasing the res in steam does increase the encode res to the headset, so you are still not quite getting the full resolution to the Quiest 3. Increasing the resolution above 100% in steam does help slightly though, as it gives a more accurate sample when it then converts it to the encode res, but ideally meta need to increase the maximum resolution in the oculus software to allow the full resolution to be provided to the Quest 3 when it is encoded. Hope that makes sense 😬
I need help because when I try to connect it I keep getting stuck on the stream connecting screen and for a couple of minutes it crashes. Could you find a solution for this
@@iconsumepizza Does your router support 5ghz? It is worth checking the router specifications online. Or if you go onto a Web browser and access your routers settings - you will have to type the ip address of your router which is usually on your router or type in 192.168.1.1 as the Web address in your browser. Then you will need to login to it, either with a password you decided or there might be one on your router. Then look at SSID or wireless settings. It will hopefully say if you have 2.4 and 5ghz here. It is worth giving your 5ghz signal a different name to the 2.4 one. That way you can make sure you are connected to the 5ghz band. Im quite confused. I own a pc with an i9 13900k processor and a 4090 and my system is struggling to maintain the proper frame timings running at 120hz. Ive been at this for weeks and I cannot get my vr games to run well at all. I have a system that should be able to keep up at least much better than it currently is.
At 120hz the frame timings are tiny, which means you really need to drop the graphical settings very low. I would recommend reducing the resolution very very low, see if that gets the frame time to a manageable amount, then increase it slowly. I have a 4090,and I have my settings and resolution high, but only run at 72hz, so my frame times can be almost twice as long as yours at 120hz,and I'm pushing my frame times to the limit.
Not sure I understand the difference between frame time and latency. You mention that 20ms for latency is good for HL Alyx, but with frame time needing to be 12.5ms for 80fps, I’m confused what latency figures you are referring to. Sorry if it’s a noob question
That's a really good point. So the frame time is how long it takes for your pc to generate an image. Then it needs to be Encoded by your gpu to make it small enough to send over WiFi. The it will be transferred via WiFi, and decoded by your headset. The total time it takes for your pc to create the image, and the time it takes to encode/send/decode is the total amount of latency. So when something happens, if your total latency from start to finish is 30ms,then you will see that something happen, 30ms after it actually did. When you finally get that image, if your pc is stable and the transferring is stable, then you should see each frame at regular intervals/spacing with around the same amount of latency 👍 hope that makes sense
@@DayDreamerVR brilliant, thank you. So GPU frame time is only one part of the overall latency from start to finish. I’m fairly new to VR, and it seems like an art to balancing everything, rather than an exact science. I’ve been using frame time as the guide for optimising fps performance and resolution, but perhaps I need to look at latency also, as this will include bitrate encoding size etc.
@@grantharper6409 There's alot to consider, but the frame times must be on time for a good experience (other wise frame can be inconsistent which can cause you to feel ill), other latency can be to your own preference. I really like making the most of image quality, so I put up with higher overall latency where I can. If you are doing competitive gaming or sim racing where reaction times can be critical, a lower overall latency can be more crucial, welcome to VR-enjoy 👍

There has been a suggestion that you need to check your ethernet connection is set to "public" and not "private." Mine was set to private, so I have changed to public and will be testing it over the coming days, and hope they fix this soon 👍
@Dirt33breaks Yeah, Virtual Desktop actually advertise the opposite, with it needing to be set to private, so it is odd. I haven't had a chance to test it yet 🤔

Do you have the option to launch them in VR from your pc? If you do then launch it from there and it should transfer to your headset if you are in the steamvr environment 👍
There are a couple of ways to check, but I'm guessing you are at maximum brightness already. First check your headset settings in the Quest home environment, check your brightness is maxed out. Then get OVR Advanced Settings in Steam (I think it is free?), then go into Steam Link, and launch OVR advanced settings. I think under one of the sections - might be video? there is a brightness slider, make sure it is at 100%. Hopefully one of those is turned down so you can turn it up. I haven't played VR Chat, I'm guessing there isn't a brightness slider in the game? If I think of anything else to check I will update. Hope you manage to sort it 👍
@@DayDreamerVR Brightness is set to max on the headset and in game. Even on my monitor it shows the proper brightness. but not on steam link. Imma try OVR advanced and see if it helps
Hi, I wouldn't be able to directly help you set it up/be hired, but am happy to help where I can and point you in the direction of some guides etc. What VR headset are you using, and is this mixed reality recording playing an app/game on a PC, or as standalone on the headset itself? What games/apps are you looking to do it with? My email address is in the channel info page, feel free to email me so we can discuss via email if that's easier 👍
It's worth double checking that your Quest software is fully upto date and that nothing is pending. Same for your GPU drivers, but try quest software first. Also turn your Pc's Internet connection from private to public-if that solves it then your firewall might be blocking the software, allow permissions for it with your firewall and switch back your connection to private. Hope you manage to get it sorted, if I find anything else/think of anything else I'll update 👍
@@DayDreamerVR I updated GPU driver a couple weeks ago, I got 1660 super, had 1050ti, I can check again. I'll check headset updates. I've been using VD for years and meta software on pc works fine. We have two headsets, it does the same thing on the other.
@@LinkSquish I take it you already have steam vr running on your PC? Also check that Steam vr doesn't need updating in steam. Private to public setting for your Internet connection is still worth trying, and gpu drivers, and also check remote play is enabled in steam. Hopefully we can figure this out 👍
I have looked at remote play before. I updated my graphics driver, there was an update. I looked into quest update, I'm on the latest. I looked in firewall, it's public. And still the app in the headset closes out right when you hit connect. My pc mainboard is ASUS Tuff Gaming Z690-Plus with Intel i9 12900K. Drive C is 1tb WD Black NVMe SSD. Yes Virtual Desktop and the Oculus app works perfectly fine, they've worked fine for years. Edit..... I built this PC myself year and a half ago. Also I got Corsair 32gb RAM 3600MHz
If you need motion smoothing or the superresolution upscaling then Virtual Desktop will be better, otherwise I would say that Steam Link is simpler to use, but it does have foveated rendering which makes the peripheral vision slightly less clear - but it improves your latency by doing that 👍
Hi, what VR headset are you using? I just double checked on my Quest 3, and the Steam Link app is still showing in the Meta store. On your PC, you just need Steam, Steam VR and you VR game installed. Hope that helps 👍
Did you manage to get this sorted? Only things I know of is to set your PC's Internet connection to public to see if that helps, if it does then there is something likely being blocked by your firewall, so try and give the app permission. And make sure your headset software is fully up to date. Make sure in your steam settings that remote play is enabled. Make sure steam and steam vr are open on your PC when you try to connect. Hope you manage to sort it 👍
@@DayDreamerVR thanks for reaching out. Not yet but I was also in a hotel traveling for work so it was on crappy wifi. Now that I'm home I'll give it another shot in a few days.
im just here as for some reason i keep getting ping ms spikes even tho my wifi router is right next to me in the same room and that the wifi is very good
Must be frustrating - is your PC connected to your router with an ethernet cable, and are you connected with your headset to the routers 5GHz band? Do you know what your GPU and CPU load is and do you have enough spare for more demanding scenes? You can use a tool like fpsVR for checking this. I would recommend going on to Virtual Desktop (if you have it), and testing your setup there and put the performance overlay on, this will tell you what your latencies are for each step, and the frametime of the CPU and GPU (how long it takes to make each image), this way you can start to narrow down what the issue might be. Hope this helps 👍
If you search in the windows toolbar for "graphics" then select graphics settings which should show up in the results, you can then select an app, click options and select the gpu. So select steam, steam vr and any games you are running that are using the igpu and set them to your dedicated gpu. You might have to add an app at the very top of the page if it isn't in the list. You can also do this in the nvidia control panel if you have an nvidia gpu, but I'm not at my pc to see exactly where/give directions to it. Hope this helps though 👍
@oldfoxy33 Sorry to hear that, I was aware Amd have never quite been as compatible as Nvidia, but it's a shame as the GPU's are good value. Hopefully they work better after a few updates with Steam Link 👍
@@gurugamer8632 If you need motion smoothing or the superresolution upscaling then Virtual Desktop will be better, otherwise I would say that Steam Link is simpler to use, but it does have foveated rendering which makes the peripheral vision slightly less clear - but it improves your latency by doing that 👍
You can't do it by cable unfortunately. I think you can connect the Quest 3 with a USB c ethernet adapter, and connect the ethernet cable to your router though👍
Yes 200 is good, especially for roomscale games. The highest possible bitrate is best for racing and flight sims, to decrease compression artifacts, but a higher bitrate would increase latency. You should barely notice the compression artifacts in other games at 200Mbps 👍
I was comparing Steam Link to Virtual desktop and even on the highest settings steam link had better performance in terms of latency which is very low and much higher frame rates but still worse image quality then VD , VD on the other hand looks much crisper but also performs alot worse in terms of latency and framerates on my PC i dont know why though.... i912900K, 32GB DDR 5 RAM @6200mhz and a RTX 4090, connection is realized over a TP-Link Archer AXE75 Wi-Fi 6E Router. Does anyone know why this would be?? My guess is that on VD im using the AV1 Codec for Quest3 and the sharpening filter which both are not working on steam link right?
Steam Link uses foveated rendering, this means the resolution is lower in your peripheral vision, which reduces latency and increases fps. Steam link also doesn't go as high as VD with the resolution being rendered, or the resolution being sent through the data stream which again boosts fps and reduces latency, but both these things reduce image quality. Virtual Desktop is more capable when it come to image quality, but you would have to put the settings lower than steam links to get the same latency or fps. Hope that helps 👍
I would try the lowest settings possible in the game, and in steam link, and then slowly increase them. Virtual desktop or Oculus Link might be better though as asynchronous space warp will significantly reduce the demand on your PC, but steam link doesn't have that option from what I can remember
There has been a suggestion that it is because your PC's ethernet connection is set to "private," and works better if it is set to "public." I have checked mine and it was set to private, so I have set it to public and will do some testing 👍
I played on steam link this evening and played with settings and didn't notice any change. Did you go to vr settings at the far bottom left, and then to steam link at the bottom left of the next menu when in steam vr? Should be there still when using steam link (not virtual desktop or Oculus Link) 👍
I would say it is better than air link, and more simple and straightforward than virtual desktop, however steam link does foveated rendering which reduces latency but makes your peripheral vision a bit less clear, so virtual desktop can have the clearer image of the three 👍
@@DayDreamerVR interesting and thank you for the explanation. We used VD when we were connecting to our laptop with a 1650. Didn't think to use it when we upgraded to a 3080. Now were looking for the best recommendation for both. I always assumed less apps running would be best but I guess it depends on the cpu.
There has been a potential fix suggested for the audio issues some people are experiencing: To fix the audio issues, under audio in the steam menu, change audio output device from "headset" to "manual." Hope that helps 👍
I forgot to mention about foveated rendering - apologies - this reduces the quality of the image in your peripheral vision/out of the sweet spot, which reduces latency, however it clearly is something that not everyone wants/needs, and hopefully we will get the option of turning this off at some point. For some reason it wont launch Steam vr on my Quest 2 at all. I have done everything correctly it just wont launch. ;(
Are you launching Steam VR on your PC first, then trying to open the app in your Quest 2 and connect?
Interesting thought, I don't quite know how it works, but the load is roughly the same for steamvr no matter whether you use airlink, or steam link 👍
Hi pro I need help please 😟
I'm confused and don't know what to buy
Quest 3 or xreal air 2 pro?
They are very different devices. If you want to game, and use it for work or to watch content, then the Quest 3 is the best option. If you just want to use a device to have a larger screen, then the Xreal Air will do that 👍
But......Will it connect to a steam deck? Play flat screen in quest?
Still waiting on my Quest 3, but I have WiFi 6E, so very curious how it performs
Yeah, hopefully we'll get the option to turn it off at some point, could be better if really trying to make the most of lower latency, but otherwise it does reduce the image quality out of the sweet spot
Yea I've found that Steamlink looks the best of the 3 (Airlink and VD). That is, when you're looking dead center. The edge blurring is way too drastic

@@DayDreamerVR Im not on the vr right now ill tell all that later but the gpu is a nvidia geforce gtx 1050
ok so I mightve done something but right now the quality is fixed! but i dont know if its temporary
well its not perfect like because its air link
@@Devilsaur With your GPU I would probably recommend using Oculus Link or Virtual Desktop and using a setting called asynchronous space warp or synchronous space warp (asw/ssw). Your PC will do half the frames and your headset will do half of them. This allows you to put your graphics settings higher. Unfortunately steam link doesn't have this option/setting yet. Glad you have managed to get it working though for the moment, enjoy 👍
@@DayDreamerVR well sometimes the res can drop on steam vr but it mostly works
@@DayDreamerVRI can also do 600mbps ok h264 over airlink for oculus games so really not sure on this one.
@@montys8237 yeah, H264 can even go higher, you can set it to 960Mbps by copying and pasting the text "960" into the bitrate section in the Oculus debug tool.
Im building new pc but do i still need monitor everytime i play game using Quest 3 and also to turn off pc?
Excellent Video!!
What router model you recommend?
Thanks 😀 I would probably still stick to the recommended routers in the virtual desktop discord as they are tried and tested for wireless PCVR 👍 (I tried the opal one though and would personally stay away from it as I didn't get good performance for signal. I don't use one on this list, I have the ASUS TUF Gaming AX3000 V2 and it works well.
From VD Discord:

Sole/Upgrade (AX) - Asus RT-AX86U ($300 US)

Hope you manage to sort it 👍
When I run my game it’s so pixelated and idk how to fix it
My graphics card is 1060. What would be the best settings for steam link?
I was looking for an onscreen monitoring software for VR.
fpsvr is an excellent tool, hope you find it helpful 👍

@@DinkyRicky My main thoughts are: are you connected to the WiFi router on the 5ghz band? Is your pc connected to the router with an ethernet cable? Is steam open on your PC and does it show/connect? Have you tried virtual desktop app and does that work okay? Hope you manage to sort it, and I'm happy to try and help 👍
@@DayDreamerVR okay thank you a lot!
I have a 3060. I just leave everything to auto and everything runs pretty dang smooth. Much better than airlink and quest link
Awesome, glad it's working well for you 👍
Me too! Especially with steam having better prices on games than meta store. Being able to run this makes it much more worth it!
It’s so bad I just keep getting errors and can’t even get into the main area for steam link
I need help because when I try to connect it I keep getting stuck on the stream connecting screen and for a couple of minutes it crashes. Could you find a solution for this

@@DayDreamerVR how do i get a 5ghz network my wifi is 2.4ghz

@@TrevinF98 how frustrating, if I find something else I'll update 👍

I have a Laptop 3050 rtx gpu, i want to play half life as best as i can. What settings should i use ?
I would try the lowest settings possible in the game, and in steam link, and then slowly increase them. Virtual desktop or Oculus Link might be better though as asynchronous space warp will significantly reduce the demand on your PC, but steam link doesn't have that option from what I can remember

Thanks, I use them as my autocue - and to hide the tiredness and bags under my eyes! 🤣
What was the reasons for steam link crashs ?
There has been a suggestion that it is because your PC's ethernet connection is set to "private," and works better if it is set to "public." I have checked mine and it was set to private, so I have set it to public and will do some testing 👍
Looks like most of these settings are no longer available.
I played on steam link this evening and played with settings and didn't notice any change. Did you go to vr settings at the far bottom left, and then to steam link at the bottom left of the next menu when in steam vr? Should be there still when using steam link (not virtual desktop or Oculus Link) 👍
Is this better than using meta air link?
I would say it is better than air link, and more simple and straightforward than virtual desktop, however steam link does foveated rendering which reduces latency but makes your peripheral vision a bit less clear, so virtual desktop can have the clearer image of the three 👍
@@DayDreamerVR interesting and thank you for the explanation. We used VD when we were connecting to our laptop with a 1650.
Didn't think to use it when we upgraded to a 3080.
Now were looking for the best recommendation for both. I always assumed less apps running would be best but I guess it depends on the cpu.
When i change from the shitty pixilated ghrapics my game lags so much its literally unplayable
Steam link Has a problem "no Sound"
There has been a potential fix suggested for the audio issues some people are experiencing: To fix the audio issues, under audio in the steam menu, change audio output device from "headset" to "manual." Hope that helps 👍
I tried and it didn't helped. Need to wait for official Patch.@@DayDreamerVR
THANK YOU!
