#SteamLink #Quest3 #VR
See this is why we love steam. They didn't have to do this for quest users. They always go above and beyond for the gamers.
They make, (SO MUCH) money off of steam it's not even remotely a hassle for them
@@lucienrichardson6666 And yet they, unlike most companies, create dedicated software for platforms they don't own that isn't intentionally limited.
This will be utilized for their deckard VR hardware to be released in the future
In fairness, this allows them to make way more money by allowing quest users to buy content from their store.
Well,, in fact they have to. It’s a gateway between quest users and steam store.
Virtual Desktop was just too troublesome for me, i always had issues with it and SteamVR, they just didnt like each other. Steam Link worked perfectly for me first time and i couldnt believe it, back to PCVR games that i had left in my library for over a year now, will finally get to play them with Quest 3 and Steam Link.
Really? ,
I've had no issues with Virtual Desktop and Steam for PC VR with my Quest 2. It's miles ahead of quest Airlink even better than corded. Not sure how he does it, but I love VirDir!
Happy to have other option out there with Steam Link, especially if folks like yourself haven't found success elsewhere.
@@chrisl8292 im not sure what the issue was but this was about a year ago when i last tried it a few times and it had issues so put me off using it again. Issues was only with SteamVR though, Rift store games worked no problem if i remember, it could be because i had multiple headsets connected like htc vive, rift s and quest 2. I guess the issue could have been SteamVR instead of VD! But when i tried steamlink it worked first time which was a big relief for me :D although i dont have the other headsets connected now, and steamVR was easily able to find my headset and controllers and just work to play half life alyx
Hard to know. When I first got my quest 2 I remember spending hours upon hours experimenting with all kinds of setup and config changes. Eventually settling in on VirDir. The diagnostic popup option you can enable to see real-time fps and other metrics was hugely beneficial. I know you can also download those to use with Steam VR...
So, if I were to guess on your VirDir issue, I suspect the issue may be which driver is given priority. The oculus or steam VR driver. Towards end of this video he referenced a steam VR setting where he switched from oculus to steam. I think in my case, mine may also be set to oculus driver. I believe that means one less layer to go through like oculus thru steam to game. Versus just oculus to game. Sorry I have zero detail on this, it's been 2+ yrs now I think since I last dug around.
@@chrisl8292I’ve always had issues with virtual desktop and never with air link.
Nvidia graphics? Try h264 instead of hevc
I am loving being able to stream PCVR to the Quest! It's such a game changer being able to play any game wirelessly, it feels so much more immersive and you still get that get PCVR experience without having to buy a more expensive headset.
Can you play resident evil 8 vr on steamlink?
@@mrthaiguy9856 sorry brother I think it only works with the psvr 1
Haha the revelation at the end that all footage is actually captured via AirLink is a huge plot twist.
I’m so excited to try this out now I can finally play hitman and Skyrim vr without the hassle
Steam link was the best thing I have ever seen come out of Valve in a while, and has allowed me to finally play games I could only dream of, and the graphics and gameplay are so smooth and I could not recommend it enough, to people who want a easy way to play PC games without a awkward cable or Virtual Desktop which can be a bit clunky.
My Virtual Desktop experience has been seamless.
Same. I tried Virtual Desktop some time ago and I don't remember why, but I didn't like it either. Steam Link has been a Godsend for me and has finally made our old Quest 2 feel useful to me, lol.
IIUC, if you want to have a stable USB wired connection, then Quest Link from Meta (not Air Link or Steam Link from Valve) is the only option available. That probably should've been mentioned in the video when discussing alternatives. I think there's still a ton of people who don't have a good setup to go wireless in a stable fashion. Needs too much debugging of the "air waves" in some homes. And if you're playing a sim game where you're mostly just sitting in a chair next to your PC, then the wire isn't a huge problem.
ALVR supports wired IIRC
Thanks for writing IIUC, where there is no option to find out what the heck is this in Google XD
@@kkzz23if I understand correctly
@@lucio-ohs8828 you need to change some settings and use adb to tell the headset to send stuff over the usb cable instead of wifi, it works but is not as simple as one would hope.
Even with good wireless setup the cable is still the most reliable method. I have a fantastic wifi6 router, a PC connected by Ethernet and 2gbps internet, yet it is not the same as cabled
For me, the biggest use-case for Virtual Desktop in the Quest 3 is that you can enable passthrough while viewing your computer screen. Then you can essentially mount your screen in a fixed position, allowing you to move around the house while watch youtube or a movie.
that sounds cool I have to try it when i get my quest 3
Glad we are finally getting some competition for the quest version of the app
Crazy you made this video now. Just yesterday I was googling this issue to get back into Half Life Alyx on my Quest 2. I had stopped because it was so laggy wireless. The update in Airlink has it running really smooth!
Yeah I played HLA via airlink and it ran buttery smooth.
It's sooo cool to see eye tracked foveated rendering being used to optimize wireless pcvr streaming.
5:27 that grenade drop was 🥶
finally got my hands on Quest Pro!
nowi can VR chat with all expression and steamlink might be the best starting point
This happens just before I get my 3060! Perfect timing.
01:29 - Ahh, that's why I couldn't run Steam Link on Quest 3 - that options wasn't turned on :D In help page they didn't mention this. Thanks for help! ;)
I haven't used my Quest 2 outside of native games in a little while, because I am primarily a Linux user. The announcement from Valve that they dropped the Link app for the quest was very exciting, but mostly because I hope they are able to launch Linux support sooner than later. I have tried getting ALVR to work, but it has been spotty for me, and I have had issues with audio in the past. It is cool and a good step forward, but I am hoping Valve can get Linux VR with the quest to a good point soon, then I don't have to keep my Windows partition around any longer. I haven't used it is so long as it was, and the only reason I booted it up was to try Half-Life Alyx that I just bought on the recent Steam Sale, and even then, I had started working on getting ALVR to work on Linux so I could try it that way. It was very convenient, and I don't have a newer headset with the newer features, so it was fine for me. It worked, gameplay was smooth, sound was good, I didn't have any complaints on my launch day Quest 2.
You use linux you deserve it all
IMO i do see a massive difference for using air link to the steam app I highly recommend it. if you have a wifi 6e router..
great video dude. you always do a great job! keep it up
Thank you mate []-)
Maybe it's just placebo but compared to Air Link I'm seeing way less color-banding (might not be the right term) and improved image quality in general. Games also seem to run better and have less latency on account of the buggy Oculus PC app not having to be open.
oculus killer allows you to use whatever magic they cooked up to create such a smooth experience over a usb cable without needing to use their shitty dashboard that constantly crashes, it just goes right into steamvr like steam link does.
Steam link is literally all I need. The quest link has latency and so does virtual desktop but steam link has close to NONE
Steam is like the god of gaming, always blessing us with new amazing things to make our playing experience even better
so im new to this whole thing and im wondering whenever i use steam link it loses quality up and down all the time like going from 320 p back to 1080 than up and down is their anyway to play the steam games through a wire using quest 2 or nah?
I'm testing Steam Link vs Virtual Desktop. I now think steam link is a bit better for steamvr games. It runs butter smooth with my quest 2 and RTX 2080 and produces a more cleaner image with less color banding and codec artefacts at identical data rates. I also think that it has a bit less input lag. I'm very impressed of valves good work!
I learned further that valve can do small steam updates without bothering the user. So maybe they are optimizing steam link since release of the quest app.
Have you tried airlink? I’m curious how it compares with steam link. I’ve been playing my Steam games exclusively in airlink so I don’t have anything to compare to yet.
Airlink is way worse than both of the others. Some Steam games don't work with steam link! I hope valve will fix that in future updates. @@Mc.Nuggetz
for me virtual desktop and air link never worked well for playing pcvr, I always had to plug my headset in if i wanted to. But currently steam link is out peforming them in every way completely for free. The experience varries for each person though with these things@@Mc.Nuggetz
@@Mc.Nuggetzpersonally I would say airlink is laggier and harder to connect
4:35 this is the best part!!!
Oh yeh, this is WAY better! 🤩💖
I'm still using airlink because the game I spend most of my time in doesnt have sound in the steam link app. The steam link menu also hinders the use of in game menus. They use the same button on the left controller. It looks better than airlink on a quest 2 though, and its certainly a faster launch. Steam link doesnt kill my gpu either.
SteamLink - here have 50% of your RTX 4090 back.
Link- let me get all you RTX 4090 GPU and stutter like crazy still.
(Same resolutions btw).
WTH?!
Virtual Desktop is amazing and I totally support Guy, but Steam Link (in my testing) is the best way to wirelessly play Steam VR games.
WHICH HEADSET ARE YOU USING?
Quest 3
That's what I thought - Thanks for the reply.@@chris_stacey
I’m glad I caught this video because this is very exciting. The oculus app is very painful with steam games easily not properly connecting for me that only be our games. I are in steam anyway so this will make it even easier.
Just need it to work with my steam deck
I think the steam link recording actually looks very good
I bought virtual desktop by accident thinking it would simulate a pc but when I got an actual pc it was the best choice ever made
Steam Link with the Quest Pro is just magic.
Absolutely! The performance on the Quest Pro is excellent, even on a mid-range PC. Finally, we have proper eye tracking and dynamic foveated rendering support.
Thanks. I found it weird that Mike didn't have anyting to say about that experience. I don't have a Quest Pro and will never get one, but the foveated encoding is really interesting! It's obviously not just implemented for the small existing userbase for that feature but for more future stuff.
So you recommend virtual desktop over steam link... Do you recommend virtual desktop over a link cable?
Ooooooh, I couldn't figure out how to fix the foveated rendering, so I switched back to airlink immediately. Guess I'll be trying it out again tonight!
Good luck mate []-)
happened? what did you choose?
I've been waiting for this.
This is way better than the other tutorials
Asetto corsa works FLAWLESS with steam link, awesome!
Haven't done Virtual Desktop so hard for me to compare. Steam Link has worked fine for me so far and appreciate the free option to finally wirelessly access my Steam VR games! That being said, did get to try Virtual Tabletop for the first time, and while excited to play it in VR, the controls through Quest feel terrible. Anyone have any tips or tricks to make it feel more fluid and less clunky?
Get a better router
tabletop sims vr implimentation is not that great, would recommend not bothering with it.
also as for "finally being able to access steamvr games for free" there were already options to do that, search up "meta quest link".
they provide both a wired and wireless option to play games from your pc.
a wired connection will be more stable and have less latency, though you will need a decent cable to do so, both in quality and length.
you can also use "oculus killer" to get rid of the oculus dashboard and go right into steamvr instead, this is currently what im doing.
Virtual Tabletop wasn't designed for the occulus touch controllers it's easy
@@NickFarroware you dumb? He said controls
Mike is back hell yeah😂❤
This honestly pushed me to grab a Quest 3 finally as a nice side grade to my index
I can't add anything to what you have said already. I continue using Virtual Desktop.
Thanks Mike.
Cheers mate []-)
Glad to learn I can't use the controllers for 2D games. My headset bugged and hasn't allowed me to download the app in order to test it out myself. Hopefully we'll be able to in the future
You can play steam link away from your home with other devices as well. I don't know if they changed it for the quest app, but there should be a button to add another pc running steam and the code should pop up for you to put in. After you do that the first time, it should work outside your home network
I'll wait as long as I have to for the return of PCVR especially on steam. I just prefer a larger capacity video card. Deckard does sound interesting and since it is designed by the same people that built steam it would make sense to use valve hardware.
PCVR is beyond dead sadly
@@doomsday9973it really isn’t lol
@@SkyTreeStudio it really is unless you are living in a delusion
@@doomsday9973 Valve releasing this app kinda proves you wrong tho lol
I know this video is 6 months old, but Meta finally actually updated the "Oculus" app. Now called "Meta Quest Link".
It's a huge shame that Meta has pretty much abandoned the PC-VR space as that's what made it so awesome in the first place.
I use it without a wired router but it’s still amazing for different steam games
For MONTHS I've been trying to figure out how to connect my laptop to my router with internet cable, so it can let me play. But it won't connect, I need help
If Valve can release a headset significantly better than Quest 3 then I will definitely buy one.
Meta has some great standalone games but I really wish the screens were better, both in resolution and contrast.
Thanks Mike, that's an excellent summary. I have tried Steam Link, it was working well initally and then I just ran into issues. The biggest for Quest 3 users is the horrific fixed foveated rendering, even with the pixel count set to 1344px or something like that, it's a miserable experience on MSFS which I render at 4K per eye, but on Steam Link it's looks really bad, only about a third of the screen is clear and it feels like I've put my HP Reverb G2 back on.... Other issues are I've had trouble connecting unless I do that first up. Loading MSFS and then connecting in Steam Link occasionally fails, so there are some things to address for Valve, it is promising but far from ideal in my usecase.
Thanks for the feedback mate. I really should play MSFS some more! I remember it being really chill to fly around and take in the sights []-)
"Render Resolution" is what primarily changes the basis size for the foveated area. Turning it to around 150%, or setting it to auto will make it much larger than 1/3 of the field of view.
@@VirtualRealityOasismike what the hell happened to the give’away?
This would be even more exciting if it let you play Steam games from the cloud. My PC is ancient lol
Steam Link works ok. But nothing beats playing with cable. You need the max performance in order to play Beat saber expert+ mode, and even with the best internet connection and WiFi 6 like I have it here won’t be enough
with virtual desktop to run games good u do need an ethernet cable connected to your pc from your router
Excited to try steam link! Unfortunately I wasted too much time trying to use the stupid air/cable link. This whole time my computer’s graphic card wasn’t compatible I guess. Was mad when I found out. I’m hoping Steam Link will work for me! Not only is it free, it seems simple!!!
Wonder if the "ARD" in Deckard stands for Augmented Reality Device, or something like that.
I hope Valve puts a Wifi7 chip in their next VR headset... its much faster than Wifi 6.
I don't know if they improved it, but I tried it for the first time today and it was rock solid, no stutters, no framedrops, nothing, virtual desktop always gave me issues
no, you cant play 2d games on this the head tracking kicks in and it goes haywire
Dude, where's the AC review???
I’m working on it, no rush []-)
😂 and im still here on my Rift S. I’ll definitely pick up a quest pro once my rift s breaks
I kind of wished that Steam Link have a *Wired* Option Too Just like the *MetaLink*
Now It's kind of like *Virtual Desktop* or *Air Link*
Тhank you, now i know how to fix blurry text in 2d apps inside steam link. this bothered me for some time now.
Virtual desktop works much better for flight sim. I only wish that it would connect through a link cable as well. I have good wifi 6 but i think a cable would be better. (even though wireless through V.D. looks better than wired through steam VR)
I'm particularly interested in steam link because of support for linux and the deck tbh
Performance was absolutely terrible for me on this despite a good PC and broadband speed
Honestly its a bit of a shame that Meta utterly dropped the PC side of things. Asgard's Wrath was a flagship PC VR title up there with HL Alyx IMO. Lone Echo and Stormlands were great too. I even liked the Oculus home environements on PC and the little trinkets you could get for it from games. I thought it had a lot of potential and its just a shame to see it left to moulder. I mean its so forgotten I literally only use it these days if for some reason some Oculus library game isn't quite working how I want it to in VD (rare).
i like using oculus killer, still works like quest air link but it kills the oculus layer completely so you just go straight to steam VR to increase performance
how do i get it
It tells me that my PC is connected wirelessly to the internet which is a issue apparently and when I continue then steam vr on my PC says an error has occurred and gives 2 options shutdown steam vr or restart steam vr and I tried restarting my PC also
I play City Car Driving, Steam Link make it looks like I'm inside a fish bowl. The regular Oculus Link works fine though.
VD is my favorite, though for some games I prefered Airlink (for some reason I got that to work *really* well too in the end). Will give Steamlink VR a try out too though - I'm sure it'll improve some with time. It's obvious they're doing this to future-proof for their own wireless VR headset, which will probably be released somewhere in the next 3 years (valve time).
Steam link would be better with AV-1 codec support.
I wish anyone would talk about whether this also works with Linux or not.
Don't own a current Quest (meaning anything 2 and above) but this honestly would make me consider picking one up just because it'd push Linux for VR by a lot.
Other than that, it's greet to see Valve integrates that stuff in their VR section of Steam now. Sure VD is better at large but this seems to be the most comfy and free option.
bruh lmao, youre using linux, touch grass
Sadly it doesn’t… such a shame too because VR (yes all of VR even on my Index) is the only reason I’m still on Windows
@@SINfromPL bruh lamo, you're playing VR, you're lost
@@ReeksofChees3 Would love it if worked on the Steam Deck already... hope they'll add support for it and SteamOS in general.
@@ReeksofChees3 Interesting to know, thanks!
I don't mind using Windows even if is mainly for VR titles these days but I love everyone having access to games despite of the HMD or OS that is used.
I see this going both ways:
1) They're using Quest hardware to secretly "beta test" tech they'll release in their headset. Kind of like how Apple beta tested ARKit for 5+ years before dropping the Vision Pro
2) Valve is realizing they cannot compete with Meta in any reasonable fashion and are "throwing in the towel" so to speak with a great steam link app.
Fingers crossed it's option 1
I can't use it it wont pair, I use a desktop and it doesn't work and I use a good laptop and it STILL doesn't work can you help me with my situation?
same, is there a solution?
Hey I have a question for you. When I have installed the vr game in steam, I must also install it in vr?
There is no need to download it in the vr headset.
@@demizewaffle8716 okay thx
Can I please ask if steam link works with MAC? It doesn’t seem to want to work even with the same wifi and remote play on
Wanted to love this, but what the hell is up with the audio issues? As in, where the hell is the audio???
it annoys me so much these people saying steam link vr "just works". like every time i run it I run into a new crash or problem
Hey, steam link was working perfectly for the first couple hours but once i got off for a little and got back on all the suden i cant open any apps threw steam link it says "next up" the game im playing then it says the same thing for steam home. Iv tried uninstaling steam vr, and steam link that didnt work and i dont know what to do know. Can you help me?
Virtual desktop is really awesome.
Can I ask how you are connecting to a mesh system? I guess you must be connecting to the actual router and not the mesh points as you have to be on the same network as your computer.
I have 2 XT8 for the house on a mesh and 1 XT8 working in standalone mode for the office []-)
Do you have to have your computer connected to your router to use steam link
2:27 "Foveated Encoding"
Not sure if I just need to crank my bandwidth but SteamVR through Steam Link is blurry in the central focus area at the default 1088, when I turn the number DOWN then the image becomes much more CLEAR (bandwidth set to 100mbps). At 512 the peripheral blur is very noticeable but at 768 I can't tell it's there in games, that setting only bothers me when looking at menus.
Crazy thing is the "Virtual Desktop" app looks fine at 40mbps (less than half the bitrate), which would indicate people with slow wi-fi would be better served using Virtual Desktop than Steam Link.
There’s a lot of people complaining about audio problems. For me my microphone doesn’t work.
My mic kept changing or cutting while playing VRChat, so a lot of times, I was mute without realizing it.
I thought this had been patched already? []-)
My brother has unusable crackling audio.
@@VirtualRealityOasis nope. Luckily my audio works but with multiplayer games its basically unusable for me and many others.
I have paired it to my steam account and installed steamlink, but when i try to open it in vr, it kicks me out. What is wrong? How do i fix this?
Great Video !
Yeah, doesn't always work for everyone. Just tried it and I just get an error on the Quest saying connection error with no code.
Well Kim. 👋🏻
Can we get an update video? Id like to know if they improved on this app as someone whos looking to play pcvr through there quest 2
What dose it mean when it saids Host not responding
I've only recently been trying to see if I can do PCVR with one of my PCs. My experience with Airlink was that it couldn't find my PC. I tried connecting both to 5G, I tried PC connected by ethernet and my Quest 2 couldn't find it on the network. I tried Virtual Desktop and within seconds they were connected. I haven't tried Steam Link as yet.
whenever i link steam link it it opens but it opens in the steam link not a app does anybody know how to fix it?
Has anybody successfully used the Steam Link app to connect to the Steam Deck? It just doesn't show up.
I’m sure it will come in an update soon. Valve is pretty good at that
When typing in Virtual Desktop on Steam and reading the information on there, it says that it does not work for Quest.
100/100 don’t recommend using steam VR you run into like 300 issues if your on a quest 2 because it’s all out of date rn 💀
Mine keeps saying Your headset is connected to a host pc but no video is being streamed
I got zipply fiber and the included router had wifi 6. I'm so glad this new steam link app came out. Now I can play Half Life Alex without the oculus app sucking up all my vram. The Vram warning in Alex is gone now!
Do I need to use Ethernet because my router is not in a room where I can play my pc in and I couldn’t move the cable enough to be able to do stuff
THANK YOU
in steam link when you open up Steamvr, obviosly it doesnt show base stations if you do have them,
I have a valve index, i wanted to try out wireless full body and i seen the post for steam link and i thoguht, Oh.. maybe its time to try, some time later i got steam link, i was amazed on how easy the set up for it is for quest 2 pretty much just click and play, but i noticed i couldnt get the base stations to come up,
but you can, when you click the button to change channels on a base station it actually comes on, and it came up on the steam vr window thingy whilst im using the quest, you still need the space calibrator to get that part set up ofc, but yeah, if you wanna be able to do full body with a quest 2 on steam link it is,
Open steam link
change the channels to force your base stations to become fully on, hopefully it will show them in your steam vr like it did for me
get space calibrator, in space calibration you need to click on right controller, do a figure 8 while holding a tracker, only turn on 1 while doing this,
and you should be set to go, you can also use your index controllers i noticed,
so if you are also a valve index/ any headset that has lighthouses, try what i said and you will have a great time, the quality quest 2 is a bit janky but that might be based on wifi? im not sure but hopefully everyone else has a better time when it comes to visuals
I’m trying to do it and when it tries to connect to my Pc is just says connection failed
