    WOW ! I can't believe you had a story in Squares Castle! 50 years ago I went to school in Mentor Ohio and my Cousin took me and my Brothers to the castle and back then there were hippies all over the grounds smoking dope, playing frisbee, playing loud music , dancing. I was 12 at the time and you have brought so many memories back to me about my brothers and cousin visiting squires castle. Thank you! You guys made my day !

    Such a shame this beautiful building was left abandoned!

    • @Knight-of-Sarcasm
      @Knight-of-Sarcasm ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not really abandoned if that helps? I'm only about an hour-ish from the spot give or take, and families go there daily for picnics, weddings, LARP and SCA events, and many just to explore and be astonished. My local LARP included people from Cleveland who introduced me to the history of Squires and it caught my love for fantasy and history perfectly in the sweet spot. As long as it's loved and taken care of, it cannot be abandoned.

    I grew up about a 15 minute walk from this Castle.
    We used to go down there all the time and play around the castle and in the vast woods behind.
    Growing up there I never heard of the castle being haunted.
    Or had any strange encounters or happenings while playing around or in the castle.

    I live on the street where this Castle is located, it’s smaller than one would think, and I never knew someone died there! I go lots of times to walk the wooded trails behind it. next time I go I’ll try to pay more attention to orbs or light anomalies… if it is haunted they don’t carry any bad energy. I always feel great after visiting this place. it’s very calming.

    Such a beautiful castle - but such a sad story behind it. When tragedies happen, residual hauntings often happen, which are memory imprints of what happened a long time ago. But in this case, it sounds more like the actual restless spirit of the lady who died in such an unfortunate way. Who knows what she saw in the trophy room - something that was luring her to her death...?
    You sure always present these stories in a respectful and interesting way. I hope the lady who is haunting the place, finds peace.

      @Little Kitty
      Hi Kitty -
      You may have missed it, but the only real tragedy of the whole thing was that Mrs. Squire just didn't like living in the place.
      The legend about her falling and breaking her neck is purely made up... No one died at the castle, at least as far as what's known.
      But it is a tragedy how the place was vandalized over the years... And just imagine what the BIG house would have been, if this was "just" the Gatehouse!

    • @LittleKitty22
      @LittleKitty22 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@slicksnewonenow We don't know what really happened though. Legends are usually true or based on the truth. People don't just make things up, not without gaining anything from it at least.

    Places give rise to the legends.And legends attract people. This is amazing! Truly appreciate your efforts and eyes to unlock such legendary places before us. Never seen such a beautiful hunted English countryside palace.
    One thing to admit here that unlike your previous hunted house that looked cursed and shadowy, this one looks very bright and beautiful during day. Even people are seen to enter this building. Nothing to my eyes appears abnormal. Who knows what it turns into during night?

    • @CuriousHistoryYT
      @CuriousHistoryYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good point Raju! If we are to believe both places are haunted then the “look” of a building should not have any bearing on the level of haunted activity.

      My father was able to tour the inside of Franklin Castle back in the mid 70’s. He said the feelings of pure dread, fear, and sorrow just overcome anyone knowing how tragic a history the home had. I still like to photograph the castle from any public vantage point I can and as a proud Clevelander, anything pertaining to this house is fascinating to me!

    I wonder how closely related the Squires' of Squires' Castle are related to the branch of Squires' that immigrated to Columbia Township in the 1840s. I used to live in the former second home of "Farmer Squire", in what was his "Townhome" in the center of town, which later went to his son. Their other home, the farmhouse, sat on a road that was later named for him, Squires Road.

    What a beautiful place but so sad that it’s been gutted on the inside and is just an empty shell of its former glory. I just don’t get the mindset of those that willfully and purposely destroy other peoples property or belongings, from cemeteries to old historical houses. The few making it bad for the many. I would have loved to have been able to see what it looked like on the inside when it was a private home. Sounds like the wife was a right witch though, wanting to spend all her time in town and not appreciative of all that peace and quiet of the country and “was bored”. My Grandma always said there was no such thing as being bored, only being a boring person. I am inclined to believe she was exactly right in this case.

      There’s nothing listed on the Metro Parks site for October yet Andy.
      Check Clevelandmetroparks.com in September. They may have something for you by then.

    What a shame that the gorgeous house was stripped bare and that no one thought to hire caretakers for it. Where are all the furnishings and windows now? Oh and on Thadius Peck's gravestone ...do you know if at the bottom of it, there is a stone makers mark? Lots of gravestones have them. Again, just a thought ;)

    At 4:20, one can see the ghost of the first Mrs. Squires leaving the trophy room where she died and passing into the larger part of the castle. The three spirits who manifest after her look like they might be a delegation from Progressive insurance... boo! Happy Halloween!

    Legend also has it that a weird Cult uses the castle and it's grounds as a meeting place for their strange, synchronized outdoor dancing rituals.
    They're supposed to be blurry in appearance and wear matching red and grey uniforms.🤣

    So this lady went into that room alone. Got scared and ran off, then broke her neck and died? Yeah, no. The dude obviously killed her. How would the story of her being scared by something that caused her to run off and fall, be known if she was alone?? That makes zero sense.
