It's sad that George didn't try to beat his addiction to alcohol. I'll be sober 40 years this Thanksgiving. I was close to giving up, but thank God, I didn't. A most tragic, but interesting story.

Well done! Thing is, in George's time, drinking was widely accepted and even expected of working men. Men who didn't drink were often ridiculed. We still got this culture to a certain degree here in the UK, where people often get totally drunk out of their skulls every weekend night, but even this is not the same as back then as it is perfectly acceptable now to not to drink. I also wonder how much help there would have been around in George's time.

It seems like there are no shortage of ghost stories tied to the O&E Canal, and sadly it seems there are also no shortage of sad stories of alcoholism and mental illness from this particular era of history. Conditions and rights for workers were definitely a lot worse back then, and resources/treatment for addiction and mental conditions were extremely lacking compared to today. It was just a recipe for disaster. Ironically, Akron ended being the birthplace of AA many generations later.
But thank you for sharing Mr. Pomeroy's story! I'd never heard of it before despite being to Lock 26 myself. I also appreciate stories like these because they revive the memory of people who may be previously forgotten, and I think we can always learn something important from their stories.

Must admit, being a visiting Limey, I hadn't come across the canal stories myself. Is this the sme Ee - I - ree Canal which the song commemorates? Certainly condtions for our own industrial town poor were equally as bad. It used to be said here that the cheapest and quickest way out of Birmingham was a bottle of gin. No wonder that the temperance movement, and the Sally Army were so strong.

I believe it is, but I’m not 100% sure. This is the Ohio and Erie Canal Lock 26, which I believe it is part of the famous Erie Canal, the historic canal in upstate New York that runs east-west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. Those men had a hard job in those days. I’m sure from the harsh beating their bodies received while doing their labors alcohol was about the only thing then which would relieve the pain they endured, which is likely the reason for the high numbers of alcohol addictions in the area in those times. Really sad to hear what came of George. Very heartbreaking. I found his memorial on a site called Find A Grave, and someone posted a photo of a newspaper article about George that is an interesting read. It’s memorial number 92741923. If you go to the site you can enter the memorial number in the extended search section, and his memorial will come up for you. There is no need to sign into the site. A lot of people use the site for genealogy research, and the site is filled with a lot of history.

I pause to study each one and find myself wondering what it must have been like to live in those day...I don't think I could work as hard as they did!

I always knew of the toll stagnate canals had on people who built, worked on or lived next to the canals. There always seemed to be a bunch of tiny cemeteries along the canals maybe with only a couple headstones.

I appreciate how respectfully you are towards the dear departed. Most channels present ghosts and spiritual beings without any acknowledgement of the fact they were living people and some outright mock and disrespect the spirit world. I also really like how you said not to take the paranormal lightly. It's very real and not a game, plus as I said ghosts were once living people and should be shown as much, if not more respect and consideration as the living. I'm very glad to have stumbled upon this channel. I'm from England but I find American history fascinating especially paranormal/supernatural. English history is much more ancient than the USA and we have a great many ghosts stories but it's interesting to learn about the history of our friends across the pond be it ghosts or more mundane things. Poor fellow - I wonder if his drinking was due to his war experiences? Had this happened in England at that time, he would have been very fortunate to have been buried in consecrated ground at all - the tradition of buying suicides at a lonely crossroads, enforced by church diktat, was still practiced in some areas and only overturned by parliament at around the same time.

It’s sad that we deal with just as many social issues today as we did then and even though there are support groups and government programs to assist those with problems with alcohol abuse, drug addiction, domestic violence, those same issues continue to plague us with very little improvement it seems. Gosh this is so sad - it is said that intoxicated people can become possessed and this story really reinforces this belief. Seems when drunk, George got possessed and that's why he became abusive towards his wife. At the same time however, him drinking signaled his agreement to become possessed, hence whatever evil spirits there were, targeted him. It is not for nothing that strong alcoholic drinks are called "spirits"...
Amazingly well presented video! No sensationalism, and you show so much respect for George. I do hope his spirit finds peace soon. I get the feeling he is still around at the location where he died through his own hands, because he wants to undo what he did - hence he is still trying to get people to convince his wife to return to him. He is doing now what he should have done at the time, but despair overcame him.
it really needs his wife to go to him, forgive him and lead him to the Light, but who knows whether his wife's spirit is aware of where he is and that he is stuck. I have no doubt that George and his wife love each other.
Great stories to listen to as I'm very sick in bed on a rainy day - sadly longterm sick, hoping that one day doctors will agree to an operation that would cure me (so far all they do is argue). Even I wonder sometimes whether I'm still alive as I'm here in between life and death, neither here nor there. I only hope I haven't died yet because I would at least want to know that I'm in the spirit world - and be reunited with my loved ones.
Very true what you say - one shouldn't mess with the paranormal. We all know that there is a spirit world but it's best not to play with things we don't really understand. As it is, I live in a very old and haunted city (in England - more than enough haunted locations here, lol) but I get easily freaked out by such things so I don't dwell on it. While we are all spirits having a human experience, it's best to leave each world to its own. There is more than enough to discover in this world.

Interesting about the people who have sensed things. When I lived in Ohio, me and my Dad once took a hike on the trail in John Bryan State Park...far back end of the park, the trail that takes you to and past the Orton Memorial, along the Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve. We didn't get but a mile in before I made us back track and leave. I had an overwhelming sensation of extreme doom and anxiety. Something I had not felt for about 20 years. The area where it began had a definite border. It began and ended exactly in a specific spot on the trail. This was in the year 2005. We never have been back. The memory of that feeling has never gone away. I would like to know....was part of a battle of the Civil War fought in that region? Something gastly traumatic happened there.
I mentioned I hadn't felt that way for 20 yrs prior.... the times before, were in well documented Civil War battle grounds in Vicksburg, MS, as a small child.

I even had refugees in the family from new straitsville mine fire. Mrs Elizabeth green but that's my fathers dads side of the family. The clarks was my fathers mothers side.

It should be considered that possibly what haunted and plagued this man could have been what he witnessed and maybe even participated in during Sherman's March to the Sea. I live in Savannah, I am a lifelong Georgian, and all you have to do is read the diaries and letters of the women who were in the path of army to know they behaved in shameful ways and committed every atrocity imaginable on women and children, no matter the race. Sherman had orders to specifically target the white women in order to demoralize their men. They left death, starvation and trauma in their wake. I could write a whole bunch of details, but trust me, it's ugly stuff. Many women were mentally broken and had to be committed the large asylum in middle Georgia. There were indeed union solders who did not like it, did not engage in it, even tried to report extreme cases to higher ups, but it fell on deaf ears. The cases that were court martialed, Lincoln, due to needing the manpower, pardoned them and put them right back on duty in the occupied South during Reconstruction. This meant women had to walk down the street and see their brutalizers in positions of authority over them. No wonder some of them lost their minds. So...I would imagine that any decent man, having the memory of these things, might not exactly be able to rest easy at night.

    • @CuriousHistoryYT

Thanks for this Melanie. We would all do well to remember the atrocities of war so as to avoid it in the future. And to think we did this to our own.
