You brought up a really good point about the inner case not being compatible with other ESR outer cases. That was a question I had and I haven’t seen any other TH-camrs mention that point yet.
I have the shift case on my 13” I have to disagree buddy sorry 😂 I love a safe place for my iPad to go into this is it, if it’s been stolen I’ll know, if I’ve left it behind I’ll know, as for the inner case most people tend to use it to attach to their fridge which I do when making dinner, it’s great to watch sports while not being concerned about splash backs or grease or something similar, it’s £54 in the UK I’ve seen much much more expensive 3rd party rugged cases and this ESR one tops them all and it’s cheaper, one even only allowed me to use the iPad in landscape mode which sometimes I like to read a comic or magazine in portrait mode especially on the 13” I do agree with the pen flap and pass through charging with Magic Keyboard ESR misses a chance for a breakthrough but i believe I’ve heard from a good source there’s more to come, including colours, have you also seen the ultra hybrid ESR 360 case? That could be the case your looking for
Yeah, I hope I didn’t make it seem like the shift magnetic case was really bad, I just felt that for what I do it didn’t quite live up to what I was hoping. I’m not sure how it is for the 13” either, but it just seemed like the magnets for holding it up higher and in portrait mode just weren’t strong enough. But otherwise, yeah, it’s still a good rugged case, I’m just not a big rugged case person, but it is a good cheaper option than a lot out there!
This is the most honest and thorough review if the ESR Shift I've seen. Every other review only really talks about how great of an IDEA it is to have so many viewing angles, but this review shows that many of those viewing angles aren't really viable in reality. It also confirms what my eyes suspected: it adds a lot of bulk. One of the biggest selling points to me for the iPad pro was how light it is.
Thanks! I’m really glad this was helpful! And I completely agree. It seemed like most others were just pointing out that it had those angles and didn’t really test how they functioned. And I also agree that I don’t like cases that add a lot of bulk. Thanks for sharing!
I wish you also mention weight and thickness of the cases. ESR is actually quite heavy and thick, almost feel like the same size and weight, as the iPad Pro 2024 itself. 😂 Returning it. Update: apple Smart Folio weights 202 grams, esr folio 266 grams.
Thanks for putting those weights on there! Yes I’m getting a scale so I can make my own measurements in the future. Thanks for your input! Was it the ESR folio case’s weight that bothered you or the ESR shift magnetic case?
You’re doing great things, your reviews bring a special edge to them. I can tell you’ve thought about real use cases and day to day annoyances in designs. Thank you!
The difference is negligible, but I would agree that the Apple Smart Folio is a little lighter than ESR’s version. I think its mostly because it have the extra material for the flap. But honestly if I wasn’t actively trying to get you an answer, I would’ve never noticed the difference 😂
Wow, thank you for making this video. I was actually going to buy the ESR case because I've seen videos reviewing it, and it seemed like it has no flaws. You made me change my mind
Omg I thought esrs cases were able to magnetize to each other, that means I'm not buying them, I'm disappointed. I'm gonna just add a magnet to a case instead from a cheaper brand.
It’s a nice case but I can’t phantom paying the inflated price for such a basic case. I mean there is not pencil protection. I have to pass. Now the ESR case is a winner
by the quality of the video... i thought you would be having 100k subs at least. i just wanted to know which according to you is better - zugu or shift? Thanks!
Good rant about the magnets! Couldn’t agree more. ESR make a Rebound Hybrid case - good compromise, like a their Rebound/Folio in your review but with the wrap case for the iPad for tablet use. I like mine
Yeah that one looks really nice actually! For me I still couldn’t have it work because I need one that I could easily pair with the Magic Keyboard, but that does look really nice if you don’t use a keyboard case!
Thanks! I’m glad I could help! Yeah unfortunately it seems that too many people are much easier on a product if they are sponsored for it, and I hope to never be that way!
Haha, you’re welcome! Even if I ever get sent a product or sponsored, I’m not ever agreeing to a set script or something that I can’t be honest about. It bothers me when I see a reviewer just being completely scripted about a product. Glad you appreciate the honesty and integrity of the channel!
Still find it kind of hilarious that you can get both the shift and the rebound and the cost would still be cheaper than getting a single Apple smart folio 😂
Great review! Just a quick question….Does the ESR slim tri-fold folio case sit magnetically, or does it rely on gravity when set up in the respective viewing angles/modes?
I actually was sure that those inner esr shells with this case and the keyboard were interchangeable. I had seen both before and was planning to buy both. Like you said that is a strategic fail for esr who could market that versatility. It is so obvious. The pin issue is easy to explain. Apple has to let you have that option through license. I am quite sure they simply saying no as to my recall only Logitech has had it. There is no way that there are not plenty of companies that would love to incorporate that functionality. I think that Apple simply does not want the market flooded with competitors with the Magic Keyboard with that capability even if they got a cut.
Yeah it is very unfortunate that the inner cases aren’t compatible! About the pins though, a company called Pitaka made a super thin case for the iPad that had pass through smart connectors so it could still attach to the Magic Keyboard, so you could be totally right that they are unable to made it, but I think they could make the pass through smart connectors as he seen others do it. But great points still! Thanks for sharing! Glad this video helped!
Awesome! Thanks for subscribing! That is definitely my goal! To make actually informative videos that aren’t too long and boring, but also not so quick that it didn’t really show you anything. I’m glad you enjoy them! Thanks for your feedback!
In the YT video "ESR Gear Shift Magnetic Case For iPad Pro - Unboxing & Review" we can clearly see the added weight is too much. So avoid this, unless you want the iPAD to almost double the weight. Also, the Apple's FOLIO does not protect the sides.
Yeah I would agree about the weight of the shift magnetic case, it’s definitely not ideal and that’s why I don’t recommend it for most people. Also, with the Apple Folio case, I wasn’t meaning that the case protects or covers the sides of the iPad itself. I was referring to how if you were to drop it, the case slightly extends past the sides to soften the blow to the iPad itself. But yes, it had very minimal protection
@Graf-XTechReviews I went ahead and got the ESR folio, but I noticed that it tends to collect dust and particles which get stuck to the screen. Did you notice that with the Apple folio case? I'm wondering if this will affect lr scratch the screen on the long term, and if the Apple folio is supposed to offer more protection in that aspect I'll just get it instead, what do you think? Do you think the softer material in Apple's folio will be more protective for the screen? Can you tell a big difference?
The Apple folio will probably be a little better about that, but it does still use microfiber to line the case so it definitely can collect dust as well, but it shouldn’t be as bad. However, this is just speculation as I haven’t really noticed even the ESR case collecting any dust yet for me at least. Thanks for asking, I hope this helps!

I’ve had the one I bought for my 2020 iPad Pro for 4 years and it’s still alive and kicking. And it was the only one that protected my screen bar none. My zugu case gave me a 1” scratch. So if you have a nano, the original case might be your best protection from screen scratches.
