    I love this dude! He has helped me so many times.
    I have an I9 en300 wheel set. I thought I'd never break one of those spokes, but sure enough I bent one badly.
    I didn't know the drive side uses a different length spoke, so that's one thing I learned. Also, I never would have thought to cut the rim tape. I was just going to take it all off, then retape it. It's the simple things like this that are so helpful.
    Thanks for all the tips!

    Good stuff. I9 recommends boiled linseed oil for the prep, not thread locker.

    Do you tension these just from the rim end, or from rim and using the hub-end hex? Avoiding wind-up?

    • @parktool
      @parktool  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True from the rim. The large spoke diameter effectively eliminates any significant wind-up.

  • @WowRixter

    A little off topic, but do you know a good spoke calculator for straight pull spokes? I've looked online and not much info, where as Calvinpedia always seems to deliver ;-)

    • @GeekonaBike
      @GeekonaBike 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If U don't have locktight, linseed oil work even better IMO. Lubed for a day or two before it dries, so U have time to tweek the truing after stressing the wheel.

    Does this system has benefits? or is it only for them to charge more?

    • @bmxscape
      @bmxscape 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      typically the weak point in a J bend spoke is at the bend, by removing the bend you remove the weak point thus making the spoke stronger

      @@MaQuGo119 bmxscape is wrong. Let's quote Jobst Brandt :"Grain alignment in drawn
      wire is longitudinal and cold forming a head onto the end of a wire disturbs this uniform structure. That is the main reason why this is the weakest place on a spoke. The elbowed spoke does not pull directly on the head, and therefore, transfers most of its load to the flange by a stronger part of the spoke." To sum up, traditional j-bend spokes are a better design.

  • @starpub1376
    @starpub1376 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Boss, do you need to wait for the thread locker to dry up before truing it? I bet this design only the nipples are the turning object right?

    • @parktool
      @parktool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thread locker is an anaerobic compound that cures in the absence of air and in the presence of an active metal like steel. If used in a situation where there is very little active metal then primer is required. The locker only starts to cure once the fastener is tight and air is squeezed out. In that environment they typically fully cure in 10-20 minutes.

    Did this spoke break due to the chain grabbing it with a outer link due to the derailleur getting hit and bending the derailleurhanger way pass the b-tension setting allowing the cain to drop past lagest cog on the casette and so grab the spoke with a outer plate?

    • @parktool
      @parktool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the spoke has no cut mark or burrs, and the anodizing looked normal. We suspect it was impact during a fall on a stump....or some other blunt instrument.

  • @jeffross6091
    @jeffross6091 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So if the patch does not hold ( yes, i saw the comment that it did) would you just retape the entire wheel?

    • @parktool
      @parktool  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the patch failed, a complete removal, clean, and re-tape is the process.

    • @Triestini
      @Triestini 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@parktool What sort of tape did you use ?

  • @denesk2794
    @denesk2794 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hmm, I always just add a full loop of rim tape. Better safe than sorry. Also it usually helps with seating the tire.
    Manufacturers are so cheap, I had several wheels (DT swiss, i9 and Race face) start to leak because the single layer just fails at the spokes.
    So to begin with, I always do 2 layers.. Tape is cheap, tires and rims are expensive and sometimes by the time you realise you lost pressure, you already ripped the tire and dinged your rim too :(

    i wonder y calvin didn't use the wheel holder (cant remenber the right name of that tool, mounted at the desk) while he inserted the spoke into the rim. isn't it usefull for such jobs rather then having the wheel oldfashen wobbeling at the desk? maybe he's use to his habits when he was wheeling rims back in the days.
