@@winglover32 hard to say for sure. The board may support it but need updates to the BIOS. What you can do is look on the support page for the site and see if the CPU you are going to be using is supported and what BIOS is required. It can be done either way. Just be sure not to boot up the computer at any point. The power supply needs to be switched into the on position. When you press the button it will power up the board somewhat.
Thank you so much! Better than MSI's video on the topic. First time building a PC and didn't want to bother with BIOS by the time I got everything up and running. Or at least not as much.
Dude!!!! Thank you! After toiling over my MOBO manual and other online posts, your video finally told me the info I needed. Everything else I looked at left out/didn't explain in detail the need to pull the file to the top directory or the need to not turn the PC on before you press the Flash BIOS button. You are an absolute lifesaver. Wish I could give you more than just a like and a sub.
Worked perfectly now let's hope the infamous red cpu amber ezdebug goes away. Otherwise I'm stuck with this 2grand new build till MSI tech support is open
@1crusaderguy I kept flashing and flashing and it just randomly worked. However, it happened again on my moms computer that I'm upgrading for her and it won't just randomly work... so idk whats up
Is it normal for this to take longer than an hour? I’ve followed all the steps seemed to work but the light still haven’t gone out in about an hour now
This was a very helpful video thank you! For me, after the bios button stopped blinking and the MOBO went thru a couple power cycles...some lights and fans continued to stay on and never shutoff.
Hello, This was a great tutorial and process explaining everything but I have came up with a problem so basically I used the usb I got with my motherboard and that usb made the motherboard turn on and there’s a red light flashing where the USB ports are I can see it through the side kind of so I’m not sure if it’s not working or not but after 7 minutes the lights all turn off and then turn back on except for the flashing red lights and my motherboard still has a red dot next to cpu so I’m not sure what to do now as well as I tried another usb that I got from Best Buy and I asked them if it would work with my pc and they said it would but when I tried it sadly didn’t so now I’m very confused on what to do. I was wondering if you could give me a quick explanation on what I should do if your not sure I might have to take it to Best Buy, the reason I’m saying Best Buy is that my cousin works there and she said that they have a very good team that’s helpful with stuff like this so yea. But I don’t wanna keep spending money so I just wanna Finnish this myself.
"If you are doing this with everything already connected you do not wanna power up the PC at this point"? Why? How can I flash the bios if I am not powering up the PC? I have RAM and SSD and CPU installed. What am i supposed to do? When am I supposed to be turn on that PSU? Or do you mean powering on with the actual on-button on the PC (case)?
I am unclear on something here. I have a fully functional MSI board that has an older BIOS Vers. I want to update it. I have the file. This computer has been running for months now. DO I need to disconnect all the hard drives to flash the BIOS at this point? Can I just leave everything connected and with the Win10 Pro shut down, flash the BIOS from the rear? I would prefer not to remove the 5 drives at this point. I will if it is required.
thank you! So it will be fine to isntall the unsupported cpu in the motherboard, complete the pc build and do this after? It won't do any damagae to the motherboard or cpu?
Should be good. Although I personally would do the update before if you can. Only reason being is if you have problems doing it it and the motherboard needs to be returned because it is defective or something you won't have to disassemble the PC
Really appreciate the video - thank you:) I never updated the bios before I inserted all the components (including a new 13th gen i7) on my new Z690 Edge WIFI DDR 4 and keep getting a red CPU light blinking. Could not updating the bios be the issue? If so, should I remove all the components before I do the update? At the end of your video you say to not turn on the power if all the components are on the motherboard. Cheers
You could look on the support page to find out if that CPU was not supported by early versions and might give you a clue but that is a good possibility. You do not need to remove the components. Just turn on the power supply but do not boot the computer at any point. You will just have the power supply in the on position so when you push the Flash BIOS button it will do the update.
What are some ways to troubleshoot? I’ve tried several different flash drives pretty confident they are all formatted properly my bios light just keeps flashing I even left one on for 5 hours to see if
Bought a new motherboard, MSI Pro Z690-a WiFi DDR4, and after all assembly a red burning LED on the mourning board. After a lot of searching, I came to you very helpful video. After seeing, done as you describe and the problems were solved. I never thought of this. Certainly not with just the motherboard.🥰
It is possible to do it on a larger USB but that requires more complexity and less reliability. You can create a smaller partition on the USB drive to get around that. And there are other ways but Windows will not format FAT32 on anything larger than 32.
So I am trying this method this morning. So far, the flash BIOS has been blinking for almost a day. The manual says to wait until the flashing stops, but I am uncertain to keep on going because board is getting warmer and I am afraid of the rising heat may warp something.
It either worked or did not. It should usually only take 15-30 minutes. After an hour I would just shut down. Sometimes it might have worked or might not have. May also need to contact support if not having any luck. Might want to read through some of the comments since I am sure others have run into that and you may get some ideas.
What if your building a new PC? and have no other PC only cell phone? should I need a bios update? I will be furious if mine doesn't post because of a bios. Be like buying a new car that won't run until you flash it's software=Ignorant.
Actually I would have to disagree with that analogy. You are not buying an assembled PC. Often the reason this can happen is because they add support for newer CPUs after they are made. I would not want the companies to not add support for future chips in order to avoid that sort of thing. I recommend buying a supported CPU for the original BIOS if you don't have the ability to update the bios.
Great video - but scary, as my USB drive doesn't have an activity LED. Apart from the use case when the BIOS needs to be flashed to support the CPU, is there any reason not to use a CPU + the M-Flash UI in BIOS instead? Thank you.
Thank you brother, you saved my life. I wrote MSI ROM from other people, I tried different situations, it didn't work, only the point you put together solved the problem. MSI.ROM, thank you. Thank you.
I have an MSI MPG X670E CARBON WIFI motherboard. I have the CPU, Ram, unformatted new m.2 hard drive, and case fans attached. I followed your instructions, and when I pressed the Flash Bios Button, it began flashing, along with the light on the USB drive, and all of the case fans lit up, and began spinning. After a few minutes, the Flash Bios Button stopped flashing, as did the USB drive, but everything else is still on, including the yellow and red lights that are on during bootup, and there is a C5 code showing on the board. I'll leave it alone for an hour or two to see if anything changes.
I’m going to be using this method to update the bios on MSI Pro x670-P wifi in preparation for 7800x3d. Is there a higher chance of it working on USB 2.0 flash drives rather than 3.0?
How did your update go with the MSI Pro x670-P wifi with the 7800x3d? I just bought these two and I saw the bios warning on the pc part picker site. From what I can tell from product pics, the x670 flash bios usb is a 3.0. Did it work for you?
Unfortunately, I could not use the FLASH button on the back of the mainboard. I had to take a USB stick and connect it to the computer (format it to FAT32), then I downloaded the file from the MSI website under BIOS files. I unzipped the zip folder and loaded it onto the USB stick without renaming it. Then I went into the BIOS under M-Flash and selected my USB stick with the file on it. (MSI B550 Gaming Plus)
what's the other way to do it? my only concern is I like to see what's going on , on a screen! this is scary as hell! and feel like I might screw it up? my flash drive doesn't light up I don't believe? it's a sandisk 3.0 32g
Question, I just bought this motherboard and I wanna use a 14th generation cpu… is it okay if I update the BIOS on a new motherboard?, like with any use before, just out of the box
I need to download the latest version of the bios to support the 13th gen or to the version that says it is ready to support the 13th gen, for z690 edge wi fe ddr5
It is the same process with our without the CPU installed. In the video we already had a CPU in the socket but that was because we were rebuilding the system and didn't need to remove the CPU.
Just followed your steps, my cpu led motherboard light stayed on, but the led on the flash button is off. Is that normal since I don't have a cpu or the bios update failed
I noticed that there are other videos that bring up MBR vs GPT for the formatting, but does it actually matter on modern setups of Windows 10 and later?
well, even if this doesnt work, youve earned a sub. ive tried for 2 days to get this process to work, found your video by chance, and youre the only one ive had tell me to lay the file out that way, everyone else just says unzip it and rename it, not pull the individual bios file and rename it. and when i hit the button, it flashed like always, but the file transfer light on the usb came on this time and a diag light on the board came on thats never come on before. cheers man, thanks
Struggling with this process right now. MSI B650 Tomahawk Wifi and AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D. I was warned that I would most likely need to update the bios for compatibility with the CPU. Following these steps precisely, repeatedly, all I get is a white blinking light that never seems to end. Goes well past the 5-7 minute estimated timeframe. I’ve also got the red CPU and yellow DRAM LED Debug lights lit up on my motherboard.
Currently building pc for second time brought second hand i7 13700k red cpu light on msi z790-p wifi ddr4 has stayed on usb ports don’t work except for flash bios button is this a motherboard, bios or cpu problem
In most cases I would always just update to the latest. It'll add support for new things but they're not going to remove support for previous generation processors or anything.
@Kleebz Tech thanks again. Quick note, it rebooted my mobo so ended up flashing the bios again because I thought it should turn it off after the flash. So I reflashed it again, saw the light flashing, saw the reboot, and left it running it several mins before turning the psu off. Will build the rig tonight with the kiddo and report back if I run into any issues.
Just be certain that when it reboots it's not doing some other sort of update. I have run into cases where after flashing the BIOS it goes into another update process on boot before getting to the bios.
Thanks, this helped a lot. Especially when my USB drive did not work. Tried flashing three times and just got flashing for a few seconds then everything turned off. Tried another USB stick and it work perfectly. Cheers!
i've finished building my pc yesterday at around midnight and for the past 12 hours I have been trying to install windows and/or to update my bios i have 2 hours of sleep I'm extremly tired but thanks to you I've finally made some progress and I might be able to download windows soon ! (I'm having a lot of issue and I'm trying every single solution out there wish me luck)
Does the USB light flash? I prefer USB with a light so I can tell if it is being accessed. If it only flashes for a few seconds then stops usually means it didn't like what it sees.
@@KLEEBZTECH I finally did it lol. I used 6 different USB drives and it actually finally worked with a micro SD card into an adapter wtf lol. Thanks for your replies and guidance. You’ve helped tons of people. Edit: and yeah the flashing was exactly what you mentioned. When the light stayed solid it usually meant it failed.
I'm doing this on with a Z690-A WiFi motherboard so that I can run a i13500 CPU but I think the update got interrupted as the USB only flashed for about 30 seconds and then nothing, following that the light on the board turned solid instead of flashing. If the update has been interrupted then would the file be corrupted?.....and if this is the case then can I just wipe the USB and redownload the file to the same USB again?
Hi, so I'm currently sitting here with my new motherboard, my first ever switch to a new model and 25 minutes passed already since I started the Bios update, but the lights still didn't turn off. Is there something to worry about or should I keep waiting?
Well you probably already decided but I would normally give it a max of about 40 minutes and then assume it either worked or didn't. No easy way to tell until you try it.
@@KLEEBZTECH Yea I decided to go with that. Turns out that when the leds stopped for a bit in the middle of it, the update was finished and the turned on again regardless. Thanks for the video, real lifesaver!!
@@nigelphillips7454 As I previously mentioned, you will want to get the bios update from the support page for your product. Believing that something is the right one is telling me that is not what you are doing. You could mess something up if not using the correct one. And please next time it is best to post a new comment instead of replying to an unrelated one since I am not likely to see it.
Do you have to do it this way.. or can you have all this downloaded onto the flash drive "as shown" and use it in the new motherboard usb input as your starting it up for the first time?
I attempted this on my MPG X570 gaming wifi exactly as directed, the only thing that happens is the drive light flashed for 30 seconds then goes solid. No lights come on on the motherboard and the drive light stays lit solidly indefinitely. Tried 2 different sub 32gb thumb drives.
Yeah that sounds like it is not working correctly. It still could be the USB drives but also could be the motherboard itself. But will say that usually if it doesn't like the USB drives it will only flash for a few seconds and not that long.
Curious. My Flash BIOS cycled through, then shut off within the 5-10 min window. Then booted up. Waited several minutes just to be sure after the Flash stopped blinking. It seems normal to shut off. However my MB decided it wanted to try to post. I still have no display with a MO running. Would you manually reset?
@omaribrahim2919 yes. The CPU was bad and the cpu socket was shorting. Had to replace the MB and CPU. First time I did it. I saved the BIOS update within a folder. Don't do that. Save the file by itself not within a folder.
So, I may not get a response but eh, hoping for the best lol So the update is as of posting this running for almost an hour. The flash BIOS button is blinking, motherboard LEDs are also all still on, my USB (which keeps blinking as long as it's plugged in) is also still blinking. Should I just wait longer? Or should I just power the thing off (hope for the best I didn't break anything) and build the PC far enough to check if it worked?
Sent my original mobo back for bios boot loop and was nervous about doing this to the new one (MSI MPG X570s edge wifi) - 5 hours no progress; most if not all post left out a few critical parts that you included in your video. Clear instructions, although slightly different from mine - still great. Used a friends computer to get the bios update, followed your instruction and I’m now mid way through the update (at least I think). It stated itself up after the 3 second press followed but the flashes on the bios button, about 5 mins and it shut down, but booted back up. I’m leaving it as is until it does something else lol. still having boot issues tho, specifically cpu ez debug led. Hong cpu isn’t toast all of a sudden, would be my luck tho 😅
@@SolidNatePhones RMA the board if possible - I’d do the same for your cpu - it’s usually a pretty accurate indication the cpu itself is the issue, before you go tinkering and potentially cause more damage I’d consider trying a totally different cpu altogether - you can sometimes call the manufacturer and explain to them the situation, hopefully they send you one of their low end cpus to test for free - also if make sure to tell them to update the bios for you before sending back the new/repaired mobo
why do you need to put the file at the top level when youre just going to paste it onto the flash drive anyway? does downloading it to your pc, unzipping it and renaming it, then pasting on to the usb drive do something to the file? does the order of operations really matter here? im genuinely confused
@@KLEEBZTECH Gotcha. Sorry I was just confused at the comments that were like "omg thank you for explaining the top level directory thing". They made it sound as if they ran into issues because they hadn't unzipped the file straight on to the flash drive or something? Idek lololol I'm a serial overthinker. Thanks for the clarification!
My motherboard turns off after the installation for a split second then turns back on. Mobo install light no longer on or usb drive. Does that mean it failed to update?
Did it take time before turning off and back on? If it took 5-15 minutes and then shut off and back on it may have others things it is doing. I usually leave it for some time until nothing is happening. If it shot off and came back on very quickly then it probably didn't work since the update process usually takes 5-15 minutes.
@@KLEEBZTECH it is taking the 5 mins, maybe a tad more. When It turns off like the update is done everything just powers right back on. Red CPU debug light stays on.
May be another issue. It sounds like the BIOS update is possibly successful but can't know if you can't boot. Don't be afraid to contact their support if other possible issues have been looked at.
Can you help me out please,i bought the msi z790 and it turns on and turns off after a few seconds and there is no video.. I also using a new cpu. Should i flash my bios?
You could check the support page for your motherboard in the bios section and see what the updates fix. That might give you an idea if it will help you. If it's a newer CPU there's a good chance that you may need to update it to support it.
@@KLEEBZTECH i pluged the usb and started the update with the usb blinking . And then i think the update finished and then the MOBO turned off and back on again but without the usb blinking. Should i wait until it turns off by itself?

Must be Fat32. Which means you must use 16gb or less
@@KLEEBZTECH On the MSI website it says to format in NTFS for 16gb+ though I'm very confused 🥴
you can give it a try. If a new board they may be now supporting NTFS. @@alptaken_
Just to add a correction, 32gb or less you should be able to do Fat32.
Dude!!!!
Mine stops flashing and the CPU EZ Debug LED stays lit..
I have the same problem. Find a fix?
@1crusaderguy I kept flashing and flashing and it just randomly worked. However, it happened again on my moms computer that I'm upgrading for her and it won't just randomly work... so idk whats up
Well I guess Ill keep trying then lol
Did you shut the power supply off before retrying the flashback
Is it normal for this to take longer than an hour? I’ve followed all the steps seemed to work but the light still haven’t gone out in about an hour now
At this point I would assume it may or may not have worked and just switch it off. I know others have had the similar problem
It shouldn't really take more than 15 minutes
Just like Gigabyte
What should I name the file for an Asus Rog Maximus Z690 Hero motherboard??

This was a very helpful video thank you! For me, after the bios button stopped blinking and the MOBO went thru a couple power cycles...some lights and fans continued to stay on and never shutoff.
Thanks mate. After many videos ive watched on you tube. You answered my question in the first 12 seconds. Top video mate.
Glad I could help 👍
Definitely the most helpful video on this topic. Absolutely great! 👍🏻
You turn on the power switch for the power supply only so you have power to the board. Do not press the power button on the PC.
My 128mb usb was in FAT (not FAT32) and i had 3 blinks (error), thank you, man!
I got everything right except I didn't drag the file out of the folder to the top level. Dang
Amazing video. The z690 manual doesn’t tell all of these steps. Thanks man. Keep it up!
Yeah they don't give lots of details. Thanks for the feedback.
I've never had an issue. When you press the button it's only going to look in that specific USB port for the drive.
Works on AM5 with install processor & etc. No need to restart Flash boot many times and get black screen again and again. Man you are the best!
Did it fix black screens for you ? Because sometimes my pc boots sometimes it don’t i tried cmos reset everything
Do i NEED to do this for z790 ddr5 with i5 13600k?
@@KLEEBZTECH ok, I haven't installed anything yet, but will do it exactly as you've done in your video first. Thanks again!
Thanks so much@@KLEEBZTECH. After about 5 1/2 minutes, the BIOS update took care of the red CPU light and was good to go:)
Im subscribing due to this exact video. Explained everything and made it simple . Thank you !
What are some ways to troubleshoot? I’ve tried several different flash drives pretty confident they are all formatted properly my bios light just keeps flashing I even left one on for 5 hours to see if
This guide helped me. A 4GB drive was accepted. A 32gb NOT with fat32
Good to hear it worked for you. 👍
Thank you for this. This is exactly what I was looking for and was able to flash my bios thanks to your video specifically. Subsribed.
Glad to hear. And thanks for subscribing. But don't worry if you change your mind since our content has changed to more AI focused content.
just tried this, its an agonizing wait for the bios to update 😅
This guide worked perfectly for my MSI MAG Mortar B650m Mainboard. Thank you!
Very welcome!
My god you’re a life saver, been trying for hours to see what’s wrong with my bios update. I kept turning on my pc
That would make things more difficult for sure. lol. Glad you got it all figured out.
Curious why it has to be less than 32GB. I’ll have to try a USB lower than that, hopefully that works I’ll update if it does!
It is possible to do it on a larger USB but that requires more complexity and less reliability. You can create a smaller partition on the USB drive to get around that. And there are other ways but Windows will not format FAT32 on anything larger than 32.
Simple and awesome, better than the MSI video., GOD BLESS YOU!!!
Thank you.
Not really if that is what you prefer. I prefer this method myself.
@@KLEEBZTECH Thank you.
Thank you brother, you saved my life. I wrote MSI ROM from other people, I tried different situations, it didn't work, only the point you put together solved the problem. MSI.ROM, thank you. Thank you.
You are welcome
You need a full stop after MSI.
This is the best video out there, every time I do update my bios I use your method, thanks and GOD BLESS YOU!!!
You're welcome!
My z690 none of the USB ports worked. I took it back got the z790 and used this video again and worked
Well that would definitely make updating difficult. Lol. Hopefully didn't waste too much time figuring it out.
why my cpu is turn on again?
The ONLY tutorial that actually worked! Thank you so much!!!! You are a life saver
You're welcome!
I found this very helpful. Now give me a year to save up for the 4090, mobo, and cpu so I can remember how to do this process 🤣
I would love a 4090... 😀
@KLEEBZTECH Wait till Q4 this year brotha. We will have our chance for an adorable and bad ass gpu
Yes. I've always had best luck with lower capacity USB 2.0. But I will say I have had USB 3.0 work in some cases where 2.0 didn't work.
You can do this way if you can access the BIOS: th-cam.com/video/bjZQaXZsU5Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kxVzJ-cxxOIx9fjs
Question, I just bought this motherboard and I wanna use a 14th generation cpu… is it okay if I update the BIOS on a new motherboard?, like with any use before, just out of the box
I always update to the latest when I get a new one. May even have to.
USB pendrive blink light and also blink motherboard flash led non stop about 1 hour up..
Nothing say anything
At that point after an hour I would assume it may not have worked. Although impossible to say. Usually it only takes 15 minutes at most.
I need to download the latest version of the bios to support the 13th gen or to the version that says it is ready to support the 13th gen, for z690 edge wi fe ddr5
I would usually go with the latest version since it includes everything from the previous updates.
@@KLEEBZTECH thanks my man
What if my Bios flash has been blinking the same slow blink?
SN:Yes I am patient I just want to make sure it’s working😭
Hard to say for sure.... But now I am assuming you have already stopped it so curious if it worked?
where is the without cpu
It is the same process with our without the CPU installed. In the video we already had a CPU in the socket but that was because we were rebuilding the system and didn't need to remove the CPU.
@@KLEEBZTECH do we have to plug in cpu power even cpu is not installed?
Just followed your steps, my cpu led motherboard light stayed on, but the led on the flash button is off. Is that normal since I don't have a cpu or the bios update failed
If there's no CPU the CPU light is going show since it doesn't recognize a CPU. That would be normal.
Hope it all worked!
I have a z690 edge ddr5 and a i7-12700k. Should I update the bios with the 7D31vH9 version? It supports 13 gen now but still supports 12 gen right?
In most cases I would always just update to the latest. It'll add support for new things but they're not going to remove support for previous generation processors or anything.
Thanks. This helped me update my bios for new rig which I am building with my 8 years old. Merry Christmas!
Love it! Start them while they are young. Merry Christmas!

In the middle of the process now. Best video by far. I actually have the bios flash light on my MB, will that turn off once it’s done? Cheers
Most likely although I have found all motherboards can behave slightly different.
@@KLEEBZTECH yeah I think mine keeps failing because I can’t find a usb drive that works. Light just stays on forever
It could just mean that it didn't like what was on the USB or the USB itself. Hard to say for sure. Often just using a different USB will work.
Thanks @@KLEEBZTECH, I'll give a different USB a try.
Thanks for the video, real lifesaver!!
hey my guy, thank you so much! one question, can i leave the cpu in the socket for flashing the bios?
Yes.
@@KLEEBZTECH Ok will try another one! Thanks!
I am hopeless. Only ddr5 rgb is giving light, pc is not statting
I have tried everything
Thanks a million worked flawlessly first try
this was by far the most helpful video I found for this process. Liked and subbed.
Glad it helped!
Probably. I usually wait a little bit on anything just to be safe.
Same thing happens to me, did you get it to work?
@omaribrahim2919 yes. The CPU was bad and the cpu socket was shorting. Had to replace the MB and CPU. First time I did it. I saved the BIOS update within a folder. Don't do that. Save the file by itself not within a folder.
So, I may not get a response but eh, hoping for the best lol
So the update is as of posting this running for almost an hour.
At that point I would power off and either try again with a different USB or build so you can check. Others have run into that on rare occasions.
3:26 if I haven't watched your video I wouldn't rename this thing...
Did u figure this out? I'm having the cpu led light issue and nothing on monitor
@@SolidNatePhones nah unfortunately my cpu seems to be toast; not sure that this works or doesn’t - sorry brotha
Thank you, great tutorial with step by step instructutions :)
You are welcome!
Does this work with latest MSI motherboards? (MAG X670e)
Should.
Absolutely brilliant video. Made my b450 bios update a breeze. Thank you!
why do you need to put the file at the top level when youre just going to paste it onto the flash drive anyway? does downloading it to your pc, unzipping it and renaming it, then pasting on to the usb drive do something to the file? does the order of operations really matter here? im genuinely confused
In the video I had downloaded directly to the USB drive. Up to you how you do it as long as it ends up in the top level directory.
No problem. Always best to double check with this stuff if not sure. 👍If not in top level it just won't see the file.
I did everything correctly and it turned on my computer idk if it’s normal or not I have a MSI Meg Z690 unify
I would give it a little while just to be on the safe side.
Sometimes they will come on and off multiple times.
Honestly I usually press the button and if it looks like it's working after a few seconds I walk away for about a half hour or so.
