    My noise is very similar but I have to be off the throttle and at 2000 rpm. I hear this noise when decelerating. Could this be my problem? 03 corolla. 1.8l. I actually had valve cover off today and the chain had a little bit of slop but only like a .25 to .50 of an inch. Seemed tight to me

  • @redgreen610

    Thanks, my Yaris suddenly sounded like this today at 260,000 km. Idles fine, only hear it when I am driving and accelerating. Pretty sure it isn't water pump, and I know it isn't the bearings in alternator. I will give this try. I appreciate you taking the time to record the sound. Very helpful. Edit: I discovered that the 1.5 engine in a Yaris/Echo has an internal tensioner that is not the same as Corollas, Matrixes etc. One of the dealer techs agreed my engine sounded like a timing chain, but he'd also heard water pumps make this noise and he has never replaced a chain or tensioner on the 1.5 engine. So, I went for it today and jacked it up, and took the serpentine belt off. Yup, i could feel the rough bearing on the water pump right away. So, if others come across this sound, you can quickly narrow it down by removing the serpentine belt and feeling the alternator, water pump, and AC compressor bearings. If they feel a little rough or make any noise as you spin them, that's probably the culprit. If you can't tell, start the engine up for a minute with no belt and listen. If the sound is still there it isn't bearings driven by the belt - it is likely the timing chain slack hitting valve cover or dampener. I replaced the water pump as described by others and all is quiet again. Was about a 3 hour job and a little difficult to get at with big hands.

      Hey thanks for the comment, i have the same yaris 1.5 2009 and was wondering about this, I have replaced my water pump, so the tensioner in the yaris is different?

    • @redgreen610
      @redgreen610 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@makeit.primetime99 When I removed the belt to water pump and turned it I could just barely feel rough bearing. When I started it up without pump connected, it was silent. It was the bearing after all. I was so sure it was the tensioner, that I'd ordered one one from Toyota. As soon as I saw it, I realized it was completely different. That 1.5 Yaris engine has an internal tensioner that is much more difficult to replace and that's why there are no YT videos on it. You have to pull the pulleys and timing chain cover off to get to it. So, I returned it at 10% restock charge, went to the local part store and bought a water pump. OOps so long ago, I forgot I've already gone through this above.

      The P0300 engine code indicates a misfiring cylinder problem in your vehicle. The misfiring happens when insufficient fuel is burned or when the spark plug gets damaged. In addition, it can damage your car's catalytic converter in extreme conditions.

    I had the same sound and checked the timing chain tensioner, The plunger was stuck back in the body of the tensioner and the body was also cracked along its length. I am sure it would have broken along the crack lines and fallen into the engine. I replaced it and the noise is gone. But now, I have a whistling sound coming from the engine.

      Did you get rid of this problem. If you didn't, here I am gonna tell you something. Because the timing chain tensioner failure, probably your engine's timing valves got into some different gaps. Check your valves' gaps, probably they need adjustment.

    You are great teacher!! One question....in the US most of the tensioner tiny retainer clips are released 45 degrees counterclockwise (Part Number: 13450-0D010). The tensioners you've featured on your channel release in the opposite direction; clockwise. Did someone rotate the tiny retainer clip 180 degrees or is that how they come from Toyota.

      Not important you return the Crankshaft 45 degree

      @@MsSajid83 your mechanics could be wrong. If it’s just this rattle and not knocking noise it’s probably the cam gear. It has a TSB. Do some research.

    4zz-fe. Chain start to rattle after 5w30 regular change. Chain rattle after 1000rpm. Stop rattle under 1000rpm. I suspect the tensioner, but when i check it it was perfect. Any ideas?

    Cool. Would you recommend replacing tensioner at 193k miles on 1ZZ-FE engine? Chain did seem a bit slack when changing valve cover gasket and there is a tiny 1 second rattle on cold start. I've heard it could also be the phasers. Car runs perfectly otherwise. Doing 5k OCI with full synthetic. Thanks.

    Question ❓
    I'm just trying to replace the gasket on the *timing chain tensioner!* (It has the only oil seepage I see on the whole entire engine) is it necessary to pull off the valve cover, and as an engine have to be top dead center?

    • @MayoCarsDR
      @MayoCarsDR  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not necessary to remove the valve cover, but it is better to fit the crankshaft pulley at zero mark.

  • @awaisiqbal8934
    @awaisiqbal8934 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Timing chain tensioner in VVTi engine always produces noise on cold engine startup for a few may be 5 secs and some times less than that even after some hot engine startups. Kindly comment

    • @MayoCarsDR
      @MayoCarsDR  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this case, the VVTi gear or chain tensioner may be damaged

    There’s any reason why did you remove the top engine cover? Is it necessary to remove?

    • @MayoCarsDR
      @MayoCarsDR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for comment,Remove the valve cover simply because when the chain tension is bad, the small chain sleeper on top of it also breaks, to check it.
