- Abandoned ACME Market - Middlesex, NJ. This grocery store hasn't been closed all too long. It only closed in February 2022. From what I understand the lease was not renewed because the property owner raised the rate. So ACME just chose to shutter the store instead.

I miss the small grocery stores like that. There use to be a lot of small A&P grocery stores around here. Every ounce in awhile I will see one of the building and know right away that was an old A&P. The big super stores aren't quite the same.
As for A&P grocery store, it was the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Store. Or Tea Company?

@@Railfan77 Thank you. We had an A&P grocery store here in my hometown Weirton,WV. My parents shopped with the H&H Green Stamps at A&P. They bought 8:00 coffee as they'd have the coffee ground at the store.
When I visited this Acme last August, I also checked out the "Dollar Planet," which was going out of business at that time (The owner was retiring.). That store was originally a Wawa (before the Wawa gas stations that have taken over today.). You guys banter at the end is so funny! This place reminds me of an abandoned IGA out here, the interior decor is pretty similar. There are only like 4 or 5 IGA left in the Seattle area mostly in rural spots.

My father used to work at this store about a million years ago in the 80s. My brother and I would wait for people to come out of the store with bags and offer to help load them into their cars for tips.

Good video! I did not know, that Acme Supermarkets were still around! Here in NY as far as I know, they are all gone! This sure was an older grocery store!

My Mom used to work there. I worked there for one night. I'm from Green Brook originally and my Dad from Dunellen, so we've been there many many times. It's amazing how small this store is. It's like when you graduate to High School and go back to your Elementary school and the halls are so small and narrow. This store had a super weird way to load in shipments. Now I've only been downstairs once or twice, but I remember it was a far walk to get to the employee break room. I remember shipments coming in, a conveyor belt going downstairs. They'd send me down cans of this or that and expect me to figure out where they go in aisles of stock. Eventually they'd make their way back upstairs on the floor when needed. I remember seeing cases of expired (or recalled I'm not sure) root beer mix to make soda.
The store had been there since 1955. Always ACME. The interior hadn't been changed since the 80s. There were originally about 12 registers. They took half the other registers out around 2001. My grandparents used to put a quarter in the horse outside the exit. The horse rode about two minutes. The horses were taken out around '99. Worth mentioning there were two fake owls on either side of the ACME sign on the roof. Not sure if they still exist.This was the only grocery Middlesex and Dunellen had. My grandparents did all their grocery shopping there for about 60 years. The parking lot was a lot bigger. ACME subdivided the lot for McDonald's around 2012. The area has gotten very depressed and run down in the past decade. I decided to leave there for good.

That cool an abandoned acme. Acme is one of my favorite grocery along with giant food stores, weis and shoprite. An acme in lansdale, pa closed years ago and became a lidl grocery store.

I, live in Detroit, Michigan. I, remember 2 supermarkets that closed permanently, and the 2 buildings are still standing.
They are:
1.A&P, located on East 7 Mile Road and Gratiot in the inner city of Detroit. The A&P, has closed permanently in 1972, and the A&P building has been abandoned since 1972 and is still standing.
2. Kroger, located on Palmer and Chene in the inner city of Detroit. Kroger, had closed permanently in 1984. And, to this very day, the old Kroger Building is still standing. Both, buildings are still standing with NO DUMPING signs.

WOW! I grew up 3 blocks from this ACME. I stole a piece of caramel nougat candy from there when I was 5 or 6 years old. Mother caught me and made me apologize to the store manager. She said if I didn't apologize she would announce what I did on the store microphone. The year was around 1965.
Born and raised here grew up right around the corner from that acme. Worked there in high school great memories place never changed or updated but will miss it

There was an even smaller acme near where I live the acme closed down about 20 years ago when they opened a Walmart supercenter about 2 miles away but now the old acme is a planet fitness

Omgg, my apartments , my light was on , when you faced them . Anyways yeah I’ve been in the same apartment since I was 5 now I’m 22. And honestly it’s sucks that acme is closed. I grew up there, nice video !

Looks similar to a lot of the rural Piggly Wiggly stores you see in the south. They're usually pretty small and have that retro feel to them like this one does.

I actually had no idea they closed this one! I passed this Acme while going to a party in 2019 and took a photo of it before it was out of view. Glad I got to see it open before it closed!

I bought so many things when they started discounting stuff at 90% off. there were only around 3 shelves stocked near the end of its lifespan and It already looked abandoned.
I didn't think there were any more acme's left Nationwide the ones in Wilkes-Barre have been gone for years

Use to go to that store from time to time when a family member of mine use to live in that area, before they moved.

I use to shop there every week. That store hadn’t been updated since the 80’s. There is another Acme up Warrenville road in Warren NJ. The floors in there were lumpy it was like little hills in some aisles
The roll up door at the back is the bread door where the bakery driver had a key to deliver bread overnight. Acme started in 1891 and still has 161 locations.

It does remind me of Shamokin, especially the entrance doors. Looking at the inside I can help but comparing how different they both look inside now. Hopefully this one won’t get looking anything near how Shamokin is. It got me thinking about taking another ride up there and seeing how it’s changed and if that newspaper ad is still there.

Across the street from Acme was a Stewart's Root Beer stand up until 1970. Sad when it closed.
I work there in 1999 I was in deli it was my first job.
It's about the size of a (Park'N'Shop) around here. There are only 3 stores. In Mass.
Wiley and Kayla how are you. 11 Grand unions are coming back and they're open in Pennsylvania. and I'm not sure where the other ones are. And this company that you're talkin about at is trying to make a comeback also Toys R Us started opening up and the thinking of reopening up Kmart I was like wow that would be nice for getting rid of so many Walmarts. The Grand Union looks nice it was weird to walk into a Grand Union in 2022.

This store has been falling apart for years. I live like 5 minutes away and they've been having problems with the store for as long as I can remember. It was super convenient though.

There is an abandoned bradlees and shoprite in I believe union beach on route 36 i’ve always seen them as a kid they were always abandon except for the shop right that one’s been abandoned for I think 5 years I thought it would be cool to check out 🙃

How cool is this? This was the main supermarket in Middlesex along with the A&P and Pathmak over on Lincoln blvd!! to give you some perspective as to how old this store is I'm 52 and this store was around when I was A child.. I doubt ShopRite would buy this Acme store, since this store was small, and most ShopRites in this area are bigger. Another supermarket chain, like Aldi, a Key Foods affiliate, etc. might move into this space.
