  • Abandoned White Castle - Cincinnati, OH. Enjoy a look at this vacant restaurant that you don't typically see close down. Apparently the service was not the greatest at this particular location which may have something to do with its closure.

White Castle is something you love or hate. Here in the Columbus area, there is a White Castle that was "temporarily closed" for a couple months after it's manager was sadly robbed and killed.

The one on West Broad Street . Amanda Lynn Rush was killed and another employee wounded in October of 2020 by Mark Reynolds. She had been the general manager of the location for two years and was with White Castle for 14 years. Amanda had been giving her paycheck to her parents since they had recently been out of work due to COVID-19. “We wouldn’t ask nothing from her...but she would give us everything,” her father said. At approximately 5:00 am, Jamall D. Shellow, age 27, was working at the WW transport trucking company. As he was getting into his semi-truck on the lot, he saw Reynolds climbing into the passenger side of the vehicle. Reynolds pointed a gun at him and demanded that the victim drive him away from the area. The victim fled on foot to a nearby fire station and reported the crime. Approximately an hour later, Reynolds entered the White Castle restaurant located at the corner of W. Broad Street and N. Wilson Road. Reynolds fired his gun into a group of 5 employees behind the counter. The store manager, Amanda Rush, age 30, was shot in the head and died at the scene. Employee Timothy L. Mathies, age 57, was shot in the wrist and was treated for his injuries. Also in the line of fire, but not struck were White Castle employees Kelly Spry, Breanna Monroe, and Zoe Thacker, as well as a drive through window patron, Frank Baldwin. Reynolds fled the scene and then travelled to the PNC Bank located at 3500 W. Broad Street where he fired shots at multiple glass doors of the bank. Reynolds last stop that morning was the Certified gas station located at 3240 W. Broad Street. Victim Dimary Ortiz was driving her car eastbound on W. Broad Street across the street from the Certified gas station when her passenger side door was struck by gunfire. Reynolds barricaded himself inside the gas station but was taken into custody just before 7:00 am. Court records show Reynolds bonded out of jail for Domestic Violence and Assault charges on October 8th of 2020. A Common Pleas judge ordered an informal mental health status evaluation for Mark Reynolds on April 8th of 2021. Still no justice....

White castle is Still owned by the family that started it. They are a dedt free company and all stores are owned by them. The only real debt they had was the $600 that was borrowed to open the original restaurant.

They are based in Columbus Ohio. They had a different concept as the home of Sliders. Square thin burgers with 5 holes in them, steam grilled on a bed of onions, they are tiny so you would need a sack full for a meal. They used to stay open 24 hours for people who would close the bars. This location is in Mason Ohio, just off exit 19 of I-71, about 20 miles north of Cincinnati. There have been multiple fast food failures in this area, including Burger king, Steak & Shake, a Slim Chicken and a Gyro place, that did not make it around this location. Within walking distance is a Wendy's, Arby's, McDonalds, Taco Bell and a Chic-fil-a, which probably had a negative effect on this and other failed businesses.

Grew up with White Castles. When we were younger we got a big sack of hamburgers often. I'm in my early 60's. So they aren't as popular as they were many many years ago. It was fun watching them cook the burger. They are frozen square patties and they put a layer of onion on the cook top and put the hamburger down like dominoes side by side. They had this long spatula and flipped the whole row at a time. As a kid then it was neat to watch. I'm in Cincinnati.

I used to go there! I know where it is lol. I saw the Mike's Express Car Wash sign and knew. I haven't been in the area much due to the pandemic. Service was kind of slow. 0:55 The "park" that he is talking about is Kings Island just up the road on I-71 (the Partridge Family and Brady Bunch both went there in the 1970s).

    Hi Wallie and Kayla,
I, live here in Detroit, Michigan. There, is a White Castle 🏰 located on Woodward Ave. just North of East 8 Mile Road in Ferndale, Michigan. White Castle 🏰 had a Temporarily Closed Sign Up for 1 month. And, a month later White Castle 🏰 had reopened in the same building. I, have never seen a White Castle 🏰 Closed Permanently.
    P.S.,
White Castle 🏰 has locations in the Detroit, and Southeastern Michigan area.

You are at the White Castle in Mason, Ohio which has become one of the most upscale cities in the state. That property is worth mega millions. It kind of makes me wonder if that lot will be sold and another location opened nearby .

White Castle has been in several movies, starting with Saturday Night Fever in 1977. The White Castle once stood on 92nd Street between Third and Fourth Avenues in Bayside, Brooklyn, but has since closed down. This one was built in 1984 in Loveland, Ohio. White Castle opened its very first Florida restaurant in Orlando on May 3, 2021, and it is the largest in the world. Adam the Woo has great videos about it. Similar to Krystal.

    Hey Wallie,
White Castle actually started in Wichita Kansas in 1921. It was started by Walter Anderson and Billy Ingram. The company is still owned and run by the Ingram family to this day. All stores are company owned, and they do not franchise any stores. In 1932 the central office was relocated to Columbus Ohio, a central location of their territory which stretched from New York to Kansas, although they no longer have locations in Kansas. Current markets are Chicago IL (including Kenosha WI), Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton in OH, Bowling Green, Lexington and Louisville in KY, Detroit MI, Indianapolis IN, Minneapolis-St Paul MN, Nashville TN, New York-New Jersey (including Allentown PA), St Louis and Columbia in MO, as well as 3 random locations in Las Vegas NV, Scottsdale AZ and Orlando FL.

They pulled all of them out of Cleveland like 9 years ago at Christmas time...the one right around the corner from my house sat vacant/abandoned for 7+ years till they converted it to a Dunkin Donuts...you can still tell it used to be a White Castle...not sure what the other ones around town and Akron became or if they sit vacant......
I miss it...now its a luxury to have White Castle and Del Taco if I travel to Columbus or Detroit.......we have neither in Cleveland!

Actually there headquartered in Bedford Park, Il. Just outside Chicago. This is an older style building with porcelain metal panels for siding. These panels where manufactured by their own factory. All White Castles in my area were torn down, rebuilt smaller and on less property and with brick.
I can only handle 2 or 3 sliders without the “onions”. Also in my opinion they have the best coffee for $1.75.

There was one in Philadelphia years ago. I remember being once before a game. There are a lot of them scattered around New Jersey and one in Whitehall, PA (near Allentown). Allentown could be a place for you to check out. There are places around that are closed like the Old Country Buffet. I had a list last year to visit but never got around to it so need a little updating in my research. If you check it out you’ll find some decent places.

Surprised no one thought to make it a pawn shop. There is one where I live called "The Castle". Thing is, property is so expensive now days. I think the government should just buy up these properties and sell it at a cheap price so small businesses can make use of them. Wasted land.

Usually on the interstates, they will have exit signs with restaurants on the area. If you do not see a White Castle logo on it, chances are any one that is in that city is going to be closed. I think the businesses actually have to buy space on those signs (could be wrong).

White Castle was founded in Wichita, Kanas haha, but even I thought it was based in Ohio. They’re headquarters are there I believe. So that is kinda weird

I love White Castle chicken sliders. They are delicious. I sure do wish we had them in the south. I won’t eat one of their regular ones as they can’t ever seem to be able to comprehend that I need one with no onions because I hate onions. We used to have a Krystal here in southern Virginia but it didn’t last long and was nasty and had the same onion problem. I’m pretty sure I visited this location in 2014 when I visited Cincinnati going to a Cincinnati Reds game from what I remember is it was delicious. Sad to see a location close. I stay out of the north when I can but sometimes it is worth going to visit just for White Castle lol.

Great Video as usual Wallie! I’d love to know who went through the trouble to climb all the way up there to paint over that tall freeway size sign. In answer to your question as to why you don’t see White Castle in PA, we had them in the Philly area, but they pulled out in the late 90s. I’d guess that most people around here shared your opinion and didn’t like their food either. I tried it a couple of times and I didn’t care for it either. I always thought their tiny hamburgers were stupid. There were two near me. Today one is a Popeye’s and the other is a Dunkin Donuts.
