  • Abandoned ACME Grocery Store Shamokin, PA Exploring With Richard, Kara, & Journey_With_Jay. Once an ACME, this store was also a BiLo Foods as well as BRL Grocery Outlet before it went out of business and ultimately closed around 2008. Been sitting abandoned since and been destroyed by vandals.

I used to drive by that location all the time when I worked in nearby Sunbury. Acme Markets sold 45 locations in NE PA to Penn Traffic in 1995. All of those markets became either Bi-Lo or Insalaco's. There is also an abandoned K-Mart just down the road. Surprised you didn't visit that while in the area. Keep up the great work!

This is your typical 70s supermarket. 20000, 30000 sq ft floor space. Up stairs has a couple offices, a break room, mens and ladies rooms, and a motor room. The motor room is where the refrigeration compressors, water heater tank, back up generator . If you went up on the roof you would have the condensers that cool the refrigerant in the compressors. Of course all of the copper and aluminum coils were probably cut out and taken for scrap ( used copper gets you about $3.00 a lb.)
The holes in the floor may have been refrigeration tunnels. Back in those days, the piping would run through the tunnels to the display cases. These days, they do not use the tunnels. Mainly because of rodents , roaches. Today they seal up the tunnels and pipe overhead to the cases. I have put together many of these stores. Some of the real old stores would be "water cooled refrigeration. This store would have a water tower on the roof. In this tower, water would be piped to the top of the tower. The water would flow down the tower fill and a big fan would blow air on the water. This causes some water to evaporate and cool. The rest would dump into a water sump tank. The water is then go to the compressors to cool them down.

Wallie, my first job netted me $1.65/hr, at a restaurant, in the 80's. While in College, I worked three years, at a restaurant and made 25 cents in pay raises, total! I sympathize with your experience, Bro! Love the explore. You guys really gave the place a thorough look-over. 👍👍

Once again another great video Wallie! Those old pictures are great! Really showed the history of all the stores in there former glory in that location. Sad to see what happened to all that hard work. I can't believe that BRL clock survived all the vandalism and not being stolen, great peace of advertising history. Really cool to see it hanging there in that one old photo!

That sounds like those carts that had the high shallow basket that HyVee used to had. Think those were specially designed for a certain type of checkout lanes. Think that might of been the zephyr checkout lane system from the 70s and 80s if I remember right

Acme dated back to either 1978 or 1979. The newspaper archives only go up to late 1977 and it was under construction at that point so it obviously opened after that.
Those were the refrigerator compressors upstairs...typical for the way Acme configured those older stores.

The best thing about all your videos is how you react to the odd and offbeat like the refrigerator in the mens rooms. All that energy the vandals wasted that they could put to feeding the poor or building homes or getting jobs like the lazy seagulls need to do.
This Acme looks like a post Apocoliptic store with everything destroyed. It looks like any chains that followed Acme never bothered to change up the store.
Two years ago Acme made a comeback in my state, buying A&P (remember them) and Pathmark and other stores that were going out of business. The Acmes now are modern but bland design, bland customer service and not bland but inflated prices. Plus NO FREQUENT SHOPPER PROGRAM. I stick with ShopRIte.
This Acme looks like the one I had in my hometown that did not see any renovation in 30 plus years. I used to have to go to that Acme (and one in Secaucus which looked unchanged in 30 plus years) as a Secret Shopper. A Secret Shopper evaluates the store cleaninless, customer service and other things. You have to buy something to get a receipt and they reinburse you like five or ten bucks. Did that before I found Cat sitting.
You all make a great team. HOpe you can all do more team shoots in the future.
