Dude, I got my A6000 a few months ago, after drooling over it for years. Finally I have the gear I've been wanting! I'm a mom of twin 5 yr olds, a wife and trying to pursue photography as a career. Your videos are extremely informative and easy to follow. Thank you so much for your work!
I just got a Sony a6000 and I have seen a few of your videos and I just want to say... THANK YOU! They've been incredibly helpful... keep up the awesome work! :D
Thanks so much Kyle. Normally I get so bored watching tutorials but you keep things easy to follow. I'm currently taking an evening class in photography and these videos are a great support through them. Especially as I'm the only a6000 lady in a room full of Canon and Nikon DSLRs!! Awesome! And no worries. The a6000 at least shows you your final image before you even snap the photo, and all told the other people have to take the picture and review the screen 😜
Just wanted to say thanks for this video, it has helped me out with a problem I was having trying to focus on something and it not picking it up. Now I will use flexible spot and get the subject I’m after in focus.
I watched this video when I first got my α6000 and had no idea what you were talking about. Watched it again and got a lot of info. One note - if you ever do a remake you might want include how to access the FOCUS AREA function by using the Fn button and the fact that you cannot alter the FOCUS AREA in the AUTO modes.
I thought I would share how I take photos of Athletes. One of the tools is using Area Focus with AF-C. Most action photography I do actually is Figure Skating. Since most rinks don't have a camera portal, I wind up using Area Focus with it in the Top Center area. This allows me to make sure I focus on places that are either above the glass (or above the ice) and onto the skater. At the same time, then I have room to compose a little bit of where the skater is in the shot. Doing this has kept my camera from needing to worry about looking at the entire sensor area and restricting the focus area helps me get sharp focus on the subject.
It’s in a tips n tricks video of mine. You have to shoot in manual mode and then slow the shutter to the slowest possible shutter - BULB. Or just use a long shutter speed and paint while it’s open. Bulb is a two person job, long shutter speed like 25 seconds will open and close on its own.
Great video man! Super helpful for me, I wasn’t entirely sure how all of that worked so thank you 👏🏻. Keep up the good work, videos look and sound great!
Very nice video again! Well edited :) Center focus is also a very easy when used with AF-S (Auto-focus Single) mode. I'm pretty sure you've also made a video explaining AF-S. Point the camera so the object you want to focus on is in the center and half-press the shutter. While holding the shutter half pressed, move the camera so you get a nice composition and take the shot. This is like flexible spot mode but quicker, unless maybe you're using a tripod. Just an additional tip :)
Good video. On the a6300, once the flexible focus point is set and a shot is taken, how can the point be quickly moved? Is that a custom button wheel setting?
@@kyletaggart thanks. The circle dial on mine is set for aperture, and do not see where in the custom settings to change that to focus point. The up/down/left/right are all customized as well. My a7iii is awesome with the joystick.
hikyletaggart figured it out. I was pressing the center button after setting the focus point. By not pressing this button. The up/down/left/right buttons can be used to move the point. Thanks for the assist.
So I love taking pictures of the fall colors and trees. I want everything in the picture to be clear and focused on. What focus setting should I do? Like auto focus continues focus and so on.
Focus area "WIDE", and if you're in "A" mode, meaning aperture priority, set the aperture number to say...f5.6 or f8. The higher the number, the more the entire scene will be in focus. Keep in mind, the higher the aperture number, the darker the image will be. However when in aperture priority mode, other settings will compensate and typically keep the scene exposed well. Hope this helps!
Great video as always. I hope everyone watched to the end. Did you ever consider making a video on how to maintain your camera and equipment? I would like to learn how to clean the sensor and lenses. Thanks
@@mohsin_sait This will be my 1st camera , I know there's quite a few features to learn on this one so I think I'll get the a6000 1st. Thank you for your advice!!
I agree! The 6500 is better suited for handheld video, but other than that for a starter, it’s worth it to save the extra $500 and get a great quality lens instead!
@@kyletaggart Awesome dude, I'm subscribed and ready to LEARN! :) If there was ONE lens you would recommend to buy after using the kit for a bit, what would it be? Tough question i know sorry! :)
Sony 50mm f1.8 is a great first lens to jump to. Not an arm and a leg cost and you can experiment with that Carly bokeh look! Also, you can try manual lenses for APSC e-mount for very very cheap!
Manual focus is probably the only reason why I'd like a touchscreen - it's really a bit slow pressing all those buttons in order to focus on something that's not in the centre

@@kyletaggart Oh okay. Video idea - you could do a Q&A - set up a gmail we can send questions to, then do a video answering them. I have a list of questions right now on the custom buttons!
Great videos! I love seeing current tutorials for the A6000. How about a video on how to focus on two objects that aren't sitting next to eachother. One is maybe a foot or two behind the front subject. Having 2 kids, it is hard to get photos and keeping both faces in focus.
Need to use a higher aperture. F5.6 lets say, will increase the DEPTH of the focus. F1.8 is a lot more SHALLOW. Hopefully that makes sense! Of course apertures that are smaller decrease the light so it’s tougher to use at night.
👍A vid on focus peaking would be appreciated - colors, choice of thicknesses and what practical effect they have on what is in focus - advantages and trade-offs. For center-lock-on tracking we need to select wide area, AF-C, and custom assign (say) center button to center-lock-on tracking. Also, center focus points, in general, tend to be more accurate. Dog almost did photo-bomb, but was well behaved and stayed in shadows.
This video was incredibly helpful! I just bought my a6000, and I've been having trouble with the auto-focus. I apparently had my settings on wide. Tomorrow I'll go out and try some new things. I take a lot of landscape photos, and want to blur out branches and trees that are close to me so I can focus on mountains in the distance. Do you have recommended settings for landscapes?
Thanks glad it helped! Typically you should use a high aperture for a landscape (to have more in focus). However you can use the different focus areas to help pin point on specifics.
If you have a camera strap use tension with it behind your neck. There are techniques that you can use without a gimbal. I have one but need to use it more often! Thanks for watching man. 📸
My preferred setting: Stationary objects: Center focus, half press shutter and recompose. Pre-AF off. DMF mode to fine adjust, Eye auto focus on AEL button (People), face tracking always active, object track on centerbutton. Landscape, always use Manual Focus (MF). For Moving objects and selfie/vlogging: Wide, AF-C.
It would be great to find a way to use a cell phone as a monitor during video recording mode. It would also be great if there were any other hacks to directly get audio to the camera instead of using a zoom mic.
I think I’m going to do a short video on an adapter I’ve seen around. Also yeah, the 6500 has the video feed option through a phone or tablet. The a6000 just didn’t get it.
Hi, Good video. But I have a question. Is there a way to customize a button to bring the focus area already selected? For example, I already selected a Flexible spot, but I want to move the focus to another corner. Can I do that without going back to the focus area? Canon has a button to activate the focus area already selected and Fujifilm has the joystick. you touch it and can move the focus around. I can not do that on Sony... Can I? Thanks.
The Sony a6100 has touch functionality for focus points, but not the a6000. You’d have to use the circle dial or two a direction to move the point. As for jumping in an out of the focus area quickly, you can have focus area set in your function menu, the two rows of settings you can customize. Or, I believe you can set one of the custom buttons like c1 to focus area.
I don't know if you are still monitoring this video, but just in case...I was over at a friend's to teach her some photography with her a6000. I shoot with an Olympus, and the equivalent to your "flexible focus" is super fast and easy to adjust. I just hit one of the four arrows that surround the dial in the back, the focus box appears, and with those arrows I move it where I want. Even shooting in auto mode (iso, aperture, shutter speed) I'll often choose my own focus point. With her Sony a6000, it seemed like you had to go to that menu setting after every single shot to choose flexible focus on order to move the focus point. Is there any way to change the settings so it's more like my Olympus, a one button thing? Google, and even this video, suggest not, which if that's true I don't think I'd ever purchase a Sony.... But I've heard such great things! So hoping you can help me out.
Mate, you're killing it with your vids. I'm not sure if its up your ally or not but street photography on the fly with the Sony 50mm 1.8 Especially things like it being wide open and shooting a particular person, animal or object when you have limited time to take the shot.
Hi ! Maybe this is a silly question. But I am still confused with how the different focus areas and focus modes interact with each other. Basically, can you do a video combining your last two videos ? Lol . Thanks for your amazing videos btw. They are greatly appreciated.
Hey! The focus area does what it does regardless of the focus mode. So if you’re on AF-C and you’re in zone, it’s going to continuously try and find that zone in focus. If you’re in AF-S, half press the shutter, it’s going to focus on whatever area you assigned. Best I can say is practice with a stagnant object and go from there! Hope this helps! 😊🙌🏻
hello. can you answer me this question? If I photograph families and I use the face detector with the Sony A6000, would it be better to configure the multi or center metering? I am working with focus on area. I need the photos to come out as uniform as possible. thank you
I’ve used the default for metering. If you’re shooting manual - I think it’s more important to focus on shutter, aperture, ISO. Face detection should work great in a family shoot. All shots straight out of camera will not necessarily be uniform in a natural light shoot, but you’ll be editing the shots most likely and can adjust in post. Get in the habit of checking each face in shots and try your best to get all in focus.
THX for this Tutorial! But i have a question: "I try to shot my dog in action with the A6000 and the SEL-55/210 . But the most of my picture are not sharp! (there is nothing sharp)" I have already tried so much! With my old Canon I never had the problem. What am I doing wrong? An action focus tutorial would be nice ....
I should definitely do a video on that! Quick tips. Use AF-C. If you’re shooting in manual mode make sure you have your shutter speed at say 1/500. Focus Area - do wide. See if that helps!
I’m a newbie with the A6000 and I was taking some amazing photos of a friend in a well light room yet the images weren’t fully in focus. I’m realizing aside from the focus modes I can’t change the focus area. It’s giving me an error message that says “this operation or setting not available as follows” “shoot mode/superior mode”. I’ve changed the setting from how j shoot (superior auto or Intelligent auto) and the same basic thing comes up. Help!
Those auto modes control most of the settings. Try “A”, aperture priority. It does everything auto except aperture. Which if you’re not sure what that is check out my bokeh basics video! 👍🏻
@@kyletaggart thank you so much! Will give it a try! Would you say for portraits and wanting the best focus would you say “A” setting would give me those images? I’m finding that auto superior or intelligent isn’t quite doing that for me oddly. I would except auto to do deliver those results but not as I had hoped.
Depends on the settings, light available, movement, lens, lots of things, not just the mode you’re in. Biggest factor of all is the person behind the camera!
I want to get a camera which one you recommend me I see Amazon got the Sony 6500 nice kit for like $1,500 with 2 lenses do you think it's a good option or spend a little more money for the Fujifilm xt3 which Coast the same just the body
The XT3 is a brand new camera, and I’m sure it’s great, but you’d need a lens so you have to add that on to the cost. Also the 6500 may come with the 18-135 which is a newer lens that I think is pretty cool. I’d go with the 6500 personally but that’s just me! If you’re going through amazon, it’s be a huge help if you used a link from one of my video descriptions. If not, no worries at all!
Probably wide or center. You won’t have time moving the focus point around on individual focus point modes. Center will obviously allow you to get focus nailed on any action in the center - as long as you’re framing it for that purpose. Wide - will let the camera do its thing, leave face detection on and see how it performs.
Thanks John! It’s really such a beast for the price. Keep in mind most of my pics are with the 35mm f1.8. Which is a little pricey, but soooo worth it!
Quality is all about the glass, and good results comes from skills, and knowing your equiptment and using it right :o) Even Your smartphone can produce amazing images if you know the craft.
@@kyletaggart : Ok Gotchya !. So Can you please tell me which lens should I buy to achieve 1.8 ? I think that is definitely the one which you are using.
There are plenty at f1.8, depends on the style you want. They range in focal length (how zoomed in your field of view will be). Sigma make a 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm at f1.4, Sony has a 35mm f1.8, Sony 50mm f1.8. All of those lenses would give you great background blur!
If My Focus is on Filmography then Does that make difference by paying attention to the aperture ? I am kind of new so you just can reply by yes or no :)
Umm...you dont have to have to shoot the subject in the center when using *center* Focus mode. You lock on and then can recompose the subject wherever you want! It maintains focus! I use center exclusively.
Personally, I feel no need for that. Basically unusable anyway in bright sunlight. To chimp, set review to 2 or 5 seconds, press AEL and it zooms so you can check sharpness, scroll if needed with thumbweel, and halfpress shutter to get fast back to shooting. With all the custom dials and buttons, no touchscreen navigation needed IMO.
I would have agreed with you until the other day i was using another mirrorless camera (which I’ll talk about in another video soon) where you could designate what eye you use for the viewfinder, then depending on that, using the top left or right hand quadrant you could simply move your finger around and focus on a single point. It sounds difficult, but it’s extremely intuitive and useful. Also a touch screen (a responsive one), is nicer than I thought regarding settings. You can of course map custom buttons for quick use, but a touch screen adds direct changes to be made quicker sometimes. Of course? It’s all preference!
Just want to add something about the center focus. You can also use it to point your camera at something you want to focus on, hold your focus, and then compose the shot. So it is not just for focussing on objects in the center. This works for me better most of the time then using selective focus
I think these focus areas kind of useless with sony a6400 that has touch screen focus.. you can touch anywhere on the screen to focus instantly without going to change the focus area to this or to that !

If you’re in AF-S, half press the shutter, it’s going to focus on whatever area you assigned. Best I can say is practice with a stagnant object and go from there! Hope this helps! 😊🙌🏻
hikyletaggart thanks for the explanation ! It makes sense ! 🙌
AFF and AFC means what and how do you get to those settings? The a6000 has so many settings It's a complicated camera.
I made a video on that too 😊 th-cam.com/video/pXUNCwvHs60/w-d-xo.html I try my best to make things simple!
hello. can you answer me this question?
(there is nothing sharp)"
I have already tried so much!
@@kyletaggart I try it! Thank you for your answer!
Nice tutorial.
🙏🏻😊
What settings when I see a green box and I can half press to focus on the object before I take the photo?
Whenever i try to pull focus for photography. It always zooms in the middle, can i turn that off or like get rid of it? Help plssssssss
Manual focus assist. You can turn it off!
hikyletaggart I tried, but I couldn’t find it!! I’m lost
Do you have a video on metering modes
I do not! I would suggest only using multi on this camera. But of course explore it if you want to.
Thanks
Finally got my Sony A6000 in white and I’m super obsessed. Thanks for the help and recommendations! Also, I’m sorry your 30. :( hahaha
Hahaha damn, roasted. Enjoy your camera, and your youth! 😜
She was kidding! Deleting this comment, no need for that here.
Urgh... wow youtube is harsh I guess. :/
All good, I got you! 👊🏻
I also set my center button to focus area 😀
Nice! It makes thing a lot easier! 😬
@@kyletaggart thanks buddy I would appreciate your help
What's the best focus area to shoot sport? (futsal)
Probably wide or center. You won’t have time moving the focus point around on individual focus point modes. Center will obviously allow you to get focus nailed on any action in the center - as long as you’re framing it for that purpose. Wide - will let the camera do its thing, leave face detection on and see how it performs.
@@kyletaggart. Thanks!
good one
Do u do giveaway lens 😅
Which Mode Your Using At This Video Or To The Most Videos Pleas Answere
I use wide for these videos. If I want to pin point on a specific thing i use flexible spot.
@@kyletaggart thank for your reply but if i use wide will it focus my face like it will follow my face
@@kyletaggart and agian am a completely new to sony and what flexible spots
Yep, you can also turn on face detection, and boom, you’re all set.
Checkout this video I’ve done > th-cam.com/video/FAUNipHy7MU/w-d-xo.html 🙌🏻
what did you use for this video ??
Sony 35mm f1.8 I believe.
i was looking your instagram and you make me believe even budget camera can produce amazing pictures
100% agree! Some of my favorite landscape picture I’ve ever taken were with my kit lens!
Is wide fine for just one person portraits? New to the sonya6000
Would be ok, turn on face detection too!
I have a6100 in continuos AF its showing spot focus and not focusinf any objects
pls pls pls more video on a6000
They’re coming!
Nice try. I'm none of those! Learn to spell and read sarcasm.
nikkon d3500 TUTORIAL PLS :)
That’d be cool, but I don’t own that camera!
Are you planning on getting the new Sony apsc camera?
Gotta see what it offers! Any good rumors?
@@kyletaggart maybe a flip out screen? Who knows
Really really hope for that. My make a wishlist video for the next Sony APSC camera!
@@kyletaggart the supposed a7000 with be designed after the a7 series so no flip out camera but insane burst numbers and focus speeds.
i love ur videos go on making
Thanks so much! 😃
Can you just make a tutorial on focus mode available in song a6000??...........
thanks a lot... Beer!!! cheers from Mexico
Thanks!! 🍻
Thanks
THANK YOU!
i was wondering how many takes the beer delivery took! haha
Haha 😜👍🏻
Why my Aperture is limited to 3.5 , Why cant I go to 1.8 ?
Lens limitation. All depends on what your lens can do.
Yes
Focus mode?
Did a video on those! th-cam.com/video/pXUNCwvHs60/w-d-xo.html
I'm Sorry.. i didn't it see before. Now i'm exploring everything in your Channel. Thank you!
No problem! 😊
tnx..
Food shot tutorial! Haha
Umm...you dont have to have to shoot the subject in the center when using *center* Focus mode. You lock on and then can recompose the subject wherever you want! It maintains focus! I use center exclusively.
Sony should put a touchscreen on this camera
Yeah they put it on the higher end 6300 and 6500.
A6300 does not have a touchscreen btw. But the a6500 does
Thanks for the correction!
Great video! It’s pronounced bow-Kay. :)
Just want to add something about the center focus. You can also use it to point your camera at something you want to focus on, hold your focus, and then compose the shot. So it is not just for focussing on objects in the center. This works for me better most of the time then using selective focus
☺👍
Helpful video, but I find the background music too loud - it is distracting to me.
I think these focus areas kind of useless with sony a6400 that has touch screen focus.. you can touch anywhere on the screen to focus instantly without going to change the focus area to this or to that !
you look like tandarans from enterprise
Wide is not for landscapes 🤦
