Kit lens for sony 16-50 has one useful option. You can test all popular focal distance and distortion with one kit lens. It's 16, 18, 23, 30, 35, 50. Try to use this focal distance one buy one every day. One day with 16 next day with other and you will understand what focal distance prime lens to buy first. Forget about bokeh on kit but you can check focal.
@majkoo the whole point of having a real camera is for the flexibility in post. If your focus is "straight out of camera" then you don't really need a real camera anyway.
The sigma 56mm 1.4 is my first prime lens and I'm still impressed by its sharpness (as a comparison I only have the Kit lens 16-50). Especially at F2.8 all of the portraits are razorsharp and you can see every eyelash clearly ♥️ My next lens will be the sigma 18-50 2.8 I guess since I love the small size together with the good image quality. The sony 16-55 is too expensive for me and the tamron 17-70 is to big for hiking. Greetings from Germany 😀
I don't shoot video. I had both the Sony 18-105 f4 and the Sony 18-135. I just sold the 18-105. To me the smaller size and weight were the deciding factors. I could not discern any sharpness difference between the two.
The Tamron 11-20 F2.8 is nothing short of amazing and so is the 17-70mm F2.8. Also, I highly suggest you test the new Sigma 100 - 400mm for mirrorless full frame but I use it on my a6500. So, when I go for a long Himalayan trip I take the Rokinon 12mm F2.0 (manual, small, good quality and great for astro pics under the high-altitude Himalayan skies) and the Tamron 11-20mm F2.8, the Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 and the Sigma 100-400mm, covering all the focal length I need for all my work and that I carry in an around the waist sling bag. Besides, the Samyang 100mm F2.8 macro and the Samyang 135mm F2.0, both manual lenses are amazing sharp and beautiful bokah. Also, among my favorite lenses are the two Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 and 50-100mm F1.8, bot fixed aperture lenses both with the MC-11 mounted to my a6500. Of course the Sigma trip 16mm, 30mm and 56mm all F1.4 is a must for any APS-C shooter. The 56mm in particular is one of the sharpest lenses one can get.
I recently bought 16mm 1.4 dcdn for sony a6400 and very happy with the output......many thanks ....and planning to buy 17-70 mm Tamron in few months ....
My three favorite lenses for Sony A6400 are: - Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 - Sony E 55-210mm f4.5-6.3 OSS - Sony E 35mm f1.8 OSS There is a fourth one you did't mention, but that I love for street photography and to carry when mountain climbing because of it's size: - Sony E 20mm f2.8 pancake
I love this desk, did a video on it! Also bc I used it so many times I overheated the dual motor system haha. Back to normal now! Haha. th-cam.com/video/VLL6wGrWxUE/w-d-xo.html
I did it a bunch before this vid but this was the first time I showed the controller part in the shot lol. The desk will overheat if you do it too much lol.
I recently picked up the Sigma 56mm based on your recommendation list. Thanks for the the great insights! I haven’t used it yet, but I’m itching to get it on my a6000. It’s my first lens other than the Sony kits lenses.
Dropping a comment to help the algorithm because this is a great video! Really great selection of lenses that normal people can reasonably afford! I enjoyed watching!
Surprised you didn't mention the Sony E 50mm F1.8 E OSS, which is considerably cheaper than the Sigma 56mm and still a very sharp lens with the added benefit of optical stabilisation which will give a considerable advantage for indoor shooting and handheld video.
Great videos bro…. I have a Sony a6000 for a long time and would like to upgrade, which one you recommend me? I just used it for some pictures not professional…. Thank you
Want to keep it small like the a6000? The a6100 isn’t a big difference, but has a lot of small features of improvement. A more new style / content creator friendly (flip out screen) is the ZV E10 and ZV E10 mark II. Also the discontinued a6400 is a great option as the same style you’re used to but little more rugged body and a lot more features. If you want to step up, into full frame, the Sony a7C or mark II is a great option to get into the full frame world. Or a used Sony a7III would be probably something you could find cheaper.
This is a good tool to use! www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=sony_zve10&products=sony_zve10ii&products=sony_a6100&products=sony_a7c&products=sony_a7cii
@ Hey Kyle sorry to ask you again but you are the best at this, so i got the a6000 like i told you and i decided to go with the Sony a7R lll and i want to know if all my lenses will fit this new camara? I have the sigma 30mm also the sigma 18-50mm and the Sony 55-210 mm thanks for the help bro
@kelvinrh123456789 yes they will fit and work! However they will work in APSC mode. They won’t use the entire sensor as the sensor is larger than the opening of the lenses you have. The lenses for a6000 are APSC, not full frame. So compared to FE lenses, they are 1.5 x cropped. Your sigma 30mm, on the Sony a7R III will have an equivalent look to an FE 45mm. If you used an FE 45mm lens on the a6000, the field of view would look like a 30mm. People use APSC lenses on full frame cameras all the time, just keep in mind they will be a little more “zoomed in”, when compared against FE lenses on the full frame sensor.
My favourite lens would be almost also the sigma 56mm but there ist one lens I prefer over it. And thats the Sony 70-350. Even though it might not be fitting for many users, I really think it is missing in this video. It is extremly sharp at all focal lengths, at full zoom its "only" sharp. I found myself using this lens only on vacations, because it is so versatile. I can do portraits with it, photograph wildlife, do landscape shots. And for everything which is wide angle I use my phone - though in future I will buy the Tamron 11-20 and maybe even an a6000 as 2nd camera. Nice video as always ! :D
Me personally, I loved the tamron 18-300mm over the Sony 70-350 - admittedly - I didn’t have a ton of time with the Sony lens. A bug reason for me - is cost. Plus the wide range of the tamron.
Hey i am a starter in the photography. I have the sony a6000 with the kit lens and i travel to california soon. I wanna shoot stars, mountains, desert city and maybe a portrait but mostly street photography and landscapes. What do you recommend what is not that pricey ?
Sony apsc is actually the best right now for it's biggest range of lenses available. And there is different prices. Actually you can get full setup of lenses not buying sony lens at all) my a6600 setup is Sigma trio f1.4 (16, 30, 56)+ Samyang 12mm f2+ viltrox 23 mm 1.4. No need in other lenses except if somebody will come with better 23mm f1.4.
Need some help here. Looking for 24mm for indoor photography. Between sel24f18z used ($4-500), samyang 24mm full frame, and viltrox 23mm, which one would you recommend?
I think the Viltrox 23mm is a great bang for the buck. It’s one of my favorite lenses. I haven’t updated it, but it’s probably gotten a little better since my review. It has a slight vignette at f1.4. I have not used the sel24f18z besides in store once, it seems nice, and this is just a guess but the focusing might be slower on it because it was an earlier lens for the a6000. Also the price, but used at $400ish is a nice price. The Samyang I have not used, it’s full frame so field of view would be diff than the other two. The sigma 30mm f1.4 is also another nice choice, sharp, but a little tighter than the Viltrox and Sony.
Prices change, but also kinda lie in the same range. Lenses usually keep their value, but it also depends on the level of lens. Thanks for checking out the channel!
Great list and nice editing. Can you please update the list after the addition of Sigma 23mm F1.4 and Sirui Sniper F1.2 series? Thank you. This is truly informative.
Good question. I didn’t have them at the same time, I had them years apart and only for about a month each. The Sony is wuite expensive, the tamron is cheaper, but bulkier. I was pleasantly surprised by the tamron. Personally I prefer smaller size, but both are “big”, so if it were me I’d get the Tamron. But if you need the extra reach, and money is no object, then the Sony is an easy choice.
Hey, I'm still using my Sony A5100 with the kit lens. I not too satisfied with the output. Considering maybe buying a telephoto/ zoom lens. Would you suggest any specific zoom lenses. Or at this point is it better to upgrade to a new camera. If yes, do you have any suggestion? Thanks!
Not sure what you’re unhappy with. If you only have the kit lens, there’s a lot of lenses that will unleash the power of the little camera. If you need more reach I’d grab a used Sony 55-210mm, cheap and opens up a lot of new compositions and scenarios. The Tamron 18-300 is a great all around lens as well, but it’s a bit chonkier.
Hey Kyle thank you for the free Lens education I’m looking for a lens for my Sony a6500 to shoot pictures and videos for sports day and night from far. Based of this video It seems like the Sony 18-105mm is a good fit or do you have any other recommendations that I can go check out?
That is a good option for both photos and video. For sports you might find need a little more reach as you gain experience. The Sony 55-210mm lens can be found cheap used. I’d recommend that for outdoor stuff. Just because it’s quite cheap. Pricey but maybe best would be the Sony 70-350mm G lens.
I have the TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 it's my first fix lens and so far I've been quite proud of it, the sharpness of it is just incredible, I mean like f/1.4 at aprice that low? man that's a bargain. The only thing that i dislike about it is the chromatic aberration it makes. Sometimes is a pain in the arse, your image has to be really in focus, and be sure not too maximized the f if the object is quite far, because you'll get those purple, green lines around the object just like in 17:07 around the "e" and "p"
Thanks! Here is a breakdown. Camera - Sony a6100 A Roll - (talking head) Viltrox 23mm f1.4 B Roll - lens shots - Viltrox 33mm f1.4 Thumbnail photo - Sony 16-50mm kit lens Audio - H1 Zoom mic on a boom mic stand Editing software - Final Cut Pro X That’s it!
Imo if you are using a non IBIS Sony A6*** camera... You will only need these 3 zoom lenses. 1. Sony 70-350mm G OSS 2. Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 3. Sony 10-18mm f4 OSS That will give you stability built into all 3 lenses and a reach from 10mm to 350mm before taking into consideration sensor crop factor.
Indoor basketball, if there’s enough light, the Sony 55-210mm might be better. When you have a prime like the 50 or 56mm you need to move your feet a lot. If I had to choose I’d choose the sigma 56mm. 👍🏻
@@kyletaggart thank you so much for your reply ! I shoot a lot with the 16-55 f2.8 and noticed that i manly shoot at 50. So I was thinking that a prime with 1.8 or 1.4 would be better so that i could step down at 2 . I have the a6600 and was thinking that oss of the sony 50mm would also help me with that. I stay at the baseline and shoot my team when attacking.
Maybe not as much. I have a lot of lenses so it's hard to answer lol. I really liked the freedom of the 18-50, bc it's like having a few primes in one. If I'm going somewhere where light may be an issue, I'd take an f1.4 or f1.8 probably.
Hi, so I’m going on holiday to a few different countries this year. I want to upgrade my 16-55 kit lens for my A6000, would the 18-50 sigma be a good upgrade and versatile enough for travel? Or would you recommend also grabbing a 35m Sony, or is it pointless to have both?
The 18-50mm is awesome for travel. I used it solely on my honeymoon, and loved everything about it. Size, weight, sharpness. I found myself sometimes wanting more length, but I’d rather have the compact size overall.
What lens would you recommend for car photography? I was considering the sigma 30mm 1.4 but after watching this video I’m reconsidering to the 56mm. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Either would work. With a prime, you’ll be moving around a lot bc they’re a fixed focal length. 56mm will allow you to be little bit further. You’ll get a blurrier background with the 56mm.
Thanks again for your great videos! I am learning so much about my a6000 and what lenses I need to use for photographing my daughter's soccer games. I am so going to buy the Tamron 18 - 300mm lense.
Happy the vids help! Keep in mind when you start, that lens do increase image quality and allow you certain advantages - but it’s also about shooting a ton of photos and gaining an understanding of light too! 🙌🏻
Hello and many greetings from Italy! Which lens would you recommend me to buy between the sigma 16 mm f1.4 and the sigma 18/50 f2.8? In your opinion, is the brightness and quality of 16mm better, or the versatility of 18/50? Is there a lot of difference in terms of quality?
Not a huge difference in quality. They serve different purposes. If you need more versatility I’d go with the 18-50mm f2.8. If you need as wide as possible, go with the sigma 16mm f1.4.
F1.4 lenses will allow you a little bit better lowlight, like the sigma or Viltrox lenses. Sony has some wide f1.4 now as well. If you want a huge low light difference it would be moving up to full frame.
I am looking voor the best lens for car photography, I have been watching so many videos that I really don’t know what will be the best for the a6000.. do you have any recommendations?
It really depends, you can go wide, or want the most bokeh, or want something all around. A fantastic all around choice is the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8. If you want to spend less than that I'd say the Sigma 30mm f1.4 is a perfect start with amazing quality.
14:00 what do you look for to know if a lens is good for video? i got myself a fx30 and im thinking of getting a prime 23mm 1.4 and a zoom lens for everything else. what do you think? thanks and awesome video. sub
Optical Steady Shot - OSS on Sony lenses )helps if you’re shooting hand held). Every manufacturer has a diff name for image stabilization. Other than that you’re looking for lenses (probably shown in reviews / test footage, that have smooth focusing. That don’t bounce around when focus transitions from one object to another. The Sony 18-105mm G F4 OSS is a good all around video lens. It also has a power zoom so you can zoom in smoothly. Ppl use manual / prime lenses for video / cinema, it’s really whatever works for you. You may find you don’t even need auto focus for video projects like short films/music videos in the long run.
Hoping you see this and are able to reply even though the video is older. I recently bought an a6700 and looking to up my game a bit from the A6000. I still have the 16-50 kit lens, 18-105 F4, 55-210 and 18-200 on the way all from Sony. I will be using this camera primarily for video, everyday family photos/holidays, and sports photography. In addition to the 18-105 and 55-210/18-200, what would you recommend for these scenarios?
awesome! congrats on the a6700 and all that glass. You kinda have sports covered with the zooms. I'd say if you want to maybe solo portaits checkout the Sigma 56mm f1.4, it's the best in their trio of 1.4 lenses. Sony's 50mm f1.8 is an older but still fantastic portrait lens as well. If you find 200mm or 250mm isn't long enough, there is a great all around lens in the Tamron 18-300 that I have a review on. It's bigger, but it's a great lens for all sorts of scenarios. Lastly, for really small size, but fun range and a great aperture at 2.8, the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 is great. I did one of my favorite videos ever on that lens. Sometimes it's about what the lens can do for you, but A LOT of the time it's how you prep as well. The lenses you have are all great. Available light, weather, time of day, is a huge factor, and when you add your own light you can really flex the capabilities of the gear you're about to have. It's fun to collect lenses, but remember you're diving in with a bunch and should be sure to use them a ton, maybe before deciding on the next! Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it!
@@kyletaggart thank you sir! I appreciate the comment and as always enjoy the content. I look forward to giving these a shot once the weather warms up and adjust based on my findings.
Hi Kyle, Happy Holidays to you and your family. Could you suggest a budget range lens for indoor basketball (my son, not pro game)? Thinking a prime lens 50mm ish. Thanks Rick
Honestly, your best bet would be a zoom lens. But the lower the f stop would be better. The 55-210mm isn’t great for low light, but in a well lit gym it may be ok. I’d you wanna try a 50mm ish lens for indoor sports you could try the sigma 56mm f1.4.
Was curious on your thoughts. I have a Sony a6000. I do photography at church which is low light similar to a concert. Also, I am considering upgrading my crop frame to a full frame Sony. So it needs to be a lense I can carry into a full frame camera. Your wisdom is much appreciated 🙏
Hi Kyle! I'm looking to see if there's a lens that is worth upgrading my kit lens with. It didn't sound like any of the 10 on your list were quite what I'm looking for. Currently I use my a6000 for a static shot on a tripod to record video of a subject that is typically 6-8ish feet away. There's some action in the shot with the subject moving, but the background is static. If possible, something that is less wide than the kit lens would be great. I would like a smaller field of view to fill up the screen, and hopefully to keep a clear background, instead of having background blur. Thank you!
Clear background vs background being blurred - is just based on settings, not the lens itself. Higher aperture (f stop) and the more of what’s in view will be in focus. F8 for example would have the subject and the background in focus, where as f1.8 would be just the subject in focus (depending how far the background is from the subject). The kit lens can zoom in to 50mm. So if you want something that zooms in further, but also has versatility, the Sony 18-105 f4 G OSS is a great all around lens, and could essentially replace your kit lens. Unless you want to keep the kit lens because of its small compact size and that it goes slightly wider at the widest it can go.
I am looking for a wide angle, compact lens for street photography. I have been considering the Sony 20mm f 2.8 pancake. Is it a decent lens? Sharpness and Af? The Sigma 16 is too big and just a bit too wide for my use.
I think this is an actually an area that needs addressing. The pancake lenses from Sony are meh. I have the 16mm and it's really not great. I'd rather use the kit lens. I haven't used the 20mm f2.8 yet though, so I can't speak to that one. Not that you can't get great images from the 16mm, 20mm, or kit lens, you can, but maybe not some super duper sharp out of this world image quality.
@@kyletaggart Thanks Kyle. I have tried using the kit lens. However, every time the camera goes to sleep or is switched off, the lens goes to 16mm. It also drinks the battery dry in half the time. The 20mm I have heard is better than the 16, but I have never used it. Intrigued by its size.
I’ve used both the 16 (borrowed) and the 20 pancakes. In fact, i bought the 20mm a second time after selling my first copy a few years ago and came to regret it. The 20mm is definitely better that the 16mm pancake. Wide open, the 20mm is fairly sharp in the middle, the 16mm is not. At f4, the edges starts to catch up, and at f5.6, sharpness is good accross the whole image. Flare control is excellent, and CA is not a problem (maybe just a bit around the edges at f2.8) Having such a small dimension has it’s shortcomings (of course), one being that the image quality starts to go down after f8. Vignetting & distortion also quite heavy without correction. If you shoot street, and normally work between f4 and f8, this lens is a good alternative. I would really recommend it if you can get it at a cheaper price used. I got my current one for about USD 120.
Replacing the kit lens is tricky, as it’s a zoom. Zooms are usually expensive, but a prime - I usually suggest the Sigma 30mm f1.4. It’s sub $300, I think it’s on sale right now as well. Another recommendation is the Viltrox 33mm f1.4. Again, under $300 and both are great lenses in terms of sharpness, great maximum aperture at f1.4, and both built well.
As usual, a really practical review of lens ,maybe not so much the Sony kit zoom, that have received really positive reviews for some years. Would be very interested in a review of the recent Tamron wide angle zoom- have never read, seen so many totally all out reviews in print and on YT. Be interested in your thoughts on the Sony 18-135. Was not available when I wanted a more versatile lens and purchased Sony 18-105 f4. Appears, from other reviews, that these lens are pretty comparable, so will no doubt keep the 18- 104 f4. Thanks for the ongoing practical content. I suspect many Sony apsc users don't need manual focus Zeiss lens that cost a fortune.
I did a comparison video of the 18-135 and the 18-105! I personally would prefer the 18-135 for the size diff. However we already owned the 18-105 when I did the review.
Hey Kyle. Just watched this again to get my fix. The video reminded me of how many of these lenses I own as a result of your channel. So when you don't create content, I save money. 😅 In spite of that, I hope to see some more lens reviews from you one of these days. Your style is unique and your videos are missed. That foxwhiptail (?) guy is pretty good but he's not you. Hope you are well and thinking about creating soon. 😊
For a long time, I've had for my A6000 the 50mm OSS, the Samyang 12mm F2 MF (which deserves an honourable mention, or perhaps the newer AF version - sharp even in the corners!)...and a big gap between. The 30mm macro rarely gets used and I recently confirmed it's not good at infinity focus. I'm watching the Sigmas 16 and 30, Sony 35 OSS, and most recently possibly the best fit for the middle of a 12/x/50 trio - the Viltrox 23mm. Or, I pony up for the Sigma 18-50. It's a tough decision.
I absolutely love the Viltrox 23mm. Little vingetting at the corners at 1.4, but love the lens. The Sony 35mm oss was my first lens after the kit, forever a favorite. The sigma 18-50, superb. Used it entirely on my honeymoon (did a review on it).
I've done some more thinking and I think the Sigma 18-50 DC DN is what I need - a prime sharp zoom that is small and light. I might snag the 35mm OSS for stabilised lowlight if I find one at the right price.
Sorry for deleting my comment about asking if the tamron 18-300mm would be a good replacement for the 55-210mm. Watched all the way through your video before seeing your recommendation on the 18-300mm. Thanks for the advice! I'll really consider that lens!
Can't wait till u get that Tamron 17-70, cause im kinda in between Sigma 18-50 and that Tamron. I have a6000 so VC would help but is it worth the price.
What do you think about the sony 70-350 telephoto lens? I think i would prefer it over the sony 50-210 but it is very disappointig for me that it is just 4.5-6.3. Unfortunately there is nothing like the full frame 70-200 F4 or the 70-200 F2.8 for aps-c... I think that the Image quality suffers a lot from the high ISO values at F6.3 🤔
High ISO is the enemy indeed. There are now some zoom f2.8’s made for APS-C, but not 70-200mm. Just ones like 16-55, 18-50, and 17-70. I had that Sony 70-350mm for a week or two and didn’t have time for a video but I liked it. Still, really a daytime wildlife/sports lens. I really enjoyed the Tamron 18-300mm.
I have the Sony 70-350 and use it on my a6400. Absolutely love it. Sold my 50-210 kit lens and never looked back. You can still use the 70-200 FE lens on your APSC, they still work very well.
@@daleberg1427 ok, thank you 👍 no the FE lenses are a little bit too pricey for me 😅 but let's hope that the future might bring something in that range for aps-c. Since there are still new lenses released, the system doesn't seem to be dead 😂

there's a weird noise, like clothes moving (i'm using headphones, others might not heard it). great video btw, i didn't want to sound negative, just to point out
I think so - however it’s not super noticeable for objects like stars that is such a wide distance. You’ll see it much more prevalent with things like a human face the closer you are. In Lightroom you can simply click a button to fix. But for Astro, it’s not a deal breaker imo.
*My Current Lens Collection for my a6400 is, the Sony 16mm f2.8, Kit Lens 16-50 & 55-210mm, I also have (2) Sigma's the 16mm & 30mm. So if I've never done Astrophotography would the 55-210 do a good job and I also wanted to get your opinion on the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 as I'm looking to replace both my 16mm and the 16-50mm with this lens as I do all of my Videos in f1.4 but I like the openness the f2.8 brings which I can also use for vlogging. Just wanted to see what you're thoughts were on this. Love your Videos and your reviews and Glad people are still keeping their APS-C camera's and not doing nothing but Sony Full Frame Cameras.*
Check out my review on the sigma 18-50mm f2.8. It’s awesome. It is def a great replacement for your kit lens and the Sony 16mm - unless you wanna hang into those bc they’re so tiny. Also the 55-210 is great for moon shots. You can get a bright moon at night - and if you use clear images zoom you can even cheat and zoom in even more. 👍🏻
@@aleks667 Already have that Lens. I was thinking of replacing both my 16mm f2.8 & 15-50mm with the Sigma Version is it will reduce my lens count but at the same time give me the same thing.
Cool run down, lots of lenses I have not looked at. Wondering if you can recommend a zoom lens in the 400-600 mm range for bird photography for the Sony a6000?
There doesn’t exist one for APSC lenses. There are a few options for full frame that you can use on the a6000. The longest zoom on the APSC side is the Sony 70-350mm G. Which is a full frame equivalent of 105-525mm. For full frame (FE) there is a Sony 600mm f4, Sony 200-600mm, and a 400mm f2.8. If you are on a budget and want smaller size by a long shot, I’d suggest the Sony 70-350mm APSC. Start with that, and go from there. I’d you’re like whoa all these prices are insane, then start with the Sony 55-210mm.
@@kyletaggart thank you! Good to know. I also came across the Tamron 150-500 which sounds like a next good step. I do have the Sony 55-210 and it’s ok, just not enough reach - the next step up from there is the Sony 300-600mm
The sigma 56mm 1.4 is a top 3 apsc lens. I’ve used it for both pics and video and the autofocus works great! I’m sad it’s not on here as people would benefit from using such a powerful lens 🤷🏻♂️
I have the sigma 30 it built my photography career still starting out but I want the 56 more than anything idk when I'll ever be able to afford it I also want an 18 - whatever non fixed lens but yea a guy can dream lol
Great video! I have the Sigma trio and the 18-50 and the Sony 70-350. I use these on my A6600 with IBIS. Great lenses. I have an older NEX 7 camera but it takes great pics also. Happy APSC is still supported.
It’s not good optically as the 18-105 f4, and it’s a variable aperture lens. So when zoomed at 210mm you have to shoot at f6.3. The 18-105 can be at f4 at any focal length. The tamron is also variable aperture, but a very wide focal range. I think the 55-210 is a great starter lens. 👍🏻
Just found your videos and wondering why you haven't posted in a while. Hope everything is good. I would have loved to have seen your opinions on the new Sony APS-C lineup (11/15/10-20mm). I just picked up the Sony 35mm f/1.8 after watching your videos on it.
I wanted to do a video on their announcement, but as I have for the past 8 months, I’ve just not had the right mindset to make videos. My day job has taken over the majority of my time, my mind set changed a bit towards what I was making, and - as I’ve shared in the past, general anxiety destroyed my creativity. I’ll tell you what I tell everyone who’s kind and leaves awesome comments like yours - I have lenses I want to make videos on, I have ideas, and I think I’ll be back, but not sure when. The Sigma 18-50mm is NOT the first zoom lens Sigma made. The 18-35mm F1.8 and 50-100 F1.8 are BOTH AMAZING APS-C lenses Sigma brought our way before the 18-50mm F2.8 and which both are very underrated. they are AMAZING, especially the 18-35mm F1.8. Check them out and you WILL BE surprised, I promise!
I agree 100% with what you said about the 35mm f1.8 OSS. This lense never gets the love it deserves!
Or just as an option if you want maximum portability and versatility in the tiniest package
@@LucasBlaney in that case i would go with sigma 18-50 f2.8)
@@Garbid but TINIEST hahah
@@LucasBlaneyhonestly I find that my iphone takes nicer pictures than the kit lens (straight out of camera at least)
@majkoo the whole point of having a real camera is for the flexibility in post. If your focus is "straight out of camera" then you don't really need a real camera anyway.
Best 3 lenses for a6000, a6100, a6300, a6400:
1) Tamron 17-70mm 2.8
2) Sony 35mm 1.8 oss
3) Sigma 16mm 1.4
(4. honorable mention: sony 50mm 1.8 oss)
Best 3 lenses for a6500 & a6600:
1) sigma 56mm 1.4
2) sigma 16mm 1.4
3) sigma 18-50mm 2.8
(4. honorable mention: viltrox 23mm 1.4)
Picked up an a6300 and this video, 2 years later, is still a great resource!
So cool to hear!
I picked it too two weeks ago with sony 35 oss and I miss some zoom a lot
The sigma 56mm 1.4 is my first prime lens and I'm still impressed by its sharpness (as a comparison I only have the Kit lens 16-50). Especially at F2.8 all of the portraits are razorsharp and you can see every eyelash clearly ♥️
My next lens will be the sigma 18-50 2.8 I guess since I love the small size together with the good image quality. The sony 16-55 is too expensive for me and the tamron 17-70 is to big for hiking.
Greetings from Germany 😀
Great comment! The 56mm is *chefs kiss*
Agree with everyone that the Sigma 56 is the best portrait lens. I would include the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 in my top 10.
Just did APS-C lenses. I believe that’s an FE lens.
I don't shoot video. I had both the Sony 18-105 f4 and the Sony 18-135. I just sold the 18-105. To me the smaller size and weight were the deciding factors. I could not discern any sharpness difference between the two.
@@kyletaggart True but it is listed for both ff and apsc
I have spent several hours researching lens' as I am upgrading my kit lens on the Sony a6000 and this was the most helpful video I watched. Thank you!
Awesome to hear! Thank you
The Tamron 11-20 F2.8 is nothing short of amazing and so is the 17-70mm F2.8.
My three favorite lenses for Sony A6400 are:
- Sigma 18-50mm f2.8
- Sony E 55-210mm f4.5-6.3 OSS
- Sony E 35mm f1.8 OSS
There is a fourth one you did't mention, but that I love for street photography and to carry when mountain climbing because of it's size:
- Sony E 20mm f2.8 pancake
Great video. I had my 6000 for 1 year now I got the Tamron 17-70 in the early summer and I absolutely love it. Long live the a6k series

I recently picked up the Sigma 56mm based on your recommendation list. Thanks for the the great insights! I haven’t used it yet, but I’m itching to get it on my a6000. It’s my first lens other than the Sony kits lenses.

Thanks Asher! One of my favorites I’ve done recently
Surprised you didn't mention the Sony E 50mm F1.8 E OSS, which is considerably cheaper than the Sigma 56mm and still a very sharp lens with the added benefit of optical stabilisation which will give a considerable advantage for indoor shooting and handheld video.

Hey, same like you, 35mm i.8 is my first lens I bought, Thanks for sharing these
I found the Sony 18-135 kit lens used for dirt cheap and it's a sharp lens with a wide range. Another option to consider.
Full price it’s steep. But on sale it’s a great buy!

@@kyletaggart thanks! Would love to see you do one! 🙌🏼
@ Thank you so much, I’ll look into those right away… Thanks again 🤝

I agree. When I use my 70-350 at the longest end, I almost always set the aperture down to f8. Very nice lens.
Me personally, I loved the tamron 18-300mm over the Sony 70-350 - admittedly - I didn’t have a ton of time with the Sony lens. A bug reason for me - is cost. Plus the wide range of the tamron.
Can't live without my 70-350. Really great for wildlife, youth sports, and unique landscapes
Your reviews are so helpful, thank you so much
Aw shucks, thanks for checking them out! 😊
Nice trick: using your adjustable height desk as a vertical slider.
Great work, I appreciate that you kept the length of the video to a relative minimum 🙏

Hey i am a starter in the photography. I have the sony a6000 with the kit lens and i travel to california soon. I wanna shoot stars, mountains, desert city and maybe a portrait but mostly street photography and landscapes. What do you recommend what is not that pricey ?
Thanks for this buddy. Super helpful. 👍🏼
Thank you for the review. It was hopeful. Just met your channel but I’m disappointed that you don’t mention prices though.
Prices change, but also kinda lie in the same range. Lenses usually keep their value, but it also depends on the level of lens. Thanks for checking out the channel!
Always with the best content. 💯
Thanks so much!
Great list and nice editing.
Can you please update the list after the addition of Sigma 23mm F1.4 and Sirui Sniper F1.2 series?
Thank you. This is truly informative.
Some day I’ll have an updated video! Can’t promise when
Gotta love the Office Space reference at 3:34.
What would be the best for my Sony a6000 for low light gym photography ?
What do you think about the TAMRON - 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 in comparison to the Sony Alpha 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G
But if you need the extra reach, and money is no object, then the Sony is an easy choice.
me with my sony 50mm 1.8 happy (for low budget is perfect, literally u can get it super cheap used, and for starting in this hobby is perfect)
Thanks for sharing. What did you record this video on? Cameras, mikes and post production software? 😀
Thanks! Here is a breakdown.
Camera - Sony a6100
A Roll - (talking head) Viltrox 23mm f1.4
B Roll - lens shots - Viltrox 33mm f1.4
Thumbnail photo - Sony 16-50mm kit lens
Audio - H1 Zoom mic on a boom mic stand
Editing software - Final Cut Pro X
That’s it!
Imo if you are using a non IBIS Sony A6*** camera... You will only need these 3 zoom lenses.
1. Sony 70-350mm G OSS
2. Tamron 17-70mm f2.8
3. Sony 10-18mm f4 OSS
That will give you stability built into all 3 lenses and a reach from 10mm to 350mm before taking into consideration sensor crop factor.
@@dakine1048 ibis + oss is better but! Its always better to have both ✌🏼🐱
Would the sony 50mm or sigma 56mm be good for shooting indoor basketball from the baseline ?
Indoor basketball, if there’s enough light, the Sony 55-210mm might be better. When you have a prime like the 50 or 56mm you need to move your feet a lot. If I had to choose I’d choose the sigma 56mm. 👍🏻
@@kyletaggart thank you so much for your reply ! I shoot a lot with the 16-55 f2.8 and noticed that i manly shoot at 50. Hi Kyle. Thanks for the video. Once you buy the Sigma 18-50 will you still use the Sony 35mm 1.8?

Really thank you, it is a difficult choice that I am making to replace the kit lens and have a good mix for taking photos and videos.
I have Sony 35mm f1.8 OSS and Sony 18-105mm f4 G OSS.
Do I need any other lenses. I know I can't take much photos in low light.
F1.4 lenses will allow you a little bit better lowlight, like the sigma or Viltrox lenses. Sony has some wide f1.4 now as well. If you want a huge low light difference it would be moving up to full frame.
This really helps me 🤝 nice vid bro
Happy to hear 😊
From this list which lens is best for product photography in your opinion
Awesome info!
Good length and covered a lot of ground. Thanks!
If you watched all the way through thanks so much!
Do you know if the Tamron 18-300m would work for the Sony a6300 ?? TIA
th-cam.com/video/fmJvvlfnrmw/w-d-xo.html I’ve done a video on it, and yes! ✌🏻
I got my current one for about USD 120.
are these also good for the sony a5100?
Yes!
Tamron 17-70 f2.8 my favorite
This was awesome 👌
Next investment the Sigma Trio. Just got SONY 70-350 G OSS.
the tamron ;18-300 in the future will be my only lens on the a 6400, and it is very sharp.
I did a review on that lens, really versatile!
Great video bro!
Thanks dude!
I'd like ti replace the kit lense with a prime. The Sony is quite expensive. Which of these or other lenses would you recomend most?
Replacing the kit lens is tricky, as it’s a zoom. Zooms are usually expensive, but a prime - I usually suggest the Sigma 30mm f1.4. It’s sub $300, I think it’s on sale right now as well. Another recommendation is the Viltrox 33mm f1.4. Again, under $300 and both are great lenses in terms of sharpness, great maximum aperture at f1.4, and both built well.
How do you think 18135??
I have it but nowadays i have a question 18135 vs 55210
Please try out the 65mm Laowa 2X macro, I really think it punches above its weight and no CA!
Nice vid thanks! Subbed.
why thank you!
My favorite is Sigma 16 mm.
It’s a dang good lens!
The sigma 30 f1.4 is seriously sharp
Love your videos!
Judy, you’re so nice! I think about making videos everyday, it’s just a matter of time. Also, I’m happy to both help you save money, and spend it 🤣
For a long time, I've had for my A6000 the 50mm OSS, the Samyang 12mm F2 MF (which deserves an honourable mention, or perhaps the newer AF version - sharp even in the corners!)...and a big gap between.
@@kyletaggart My main concern with the Viltrox is heavy CA.
It might just come down to the right deal coming along.
I'll really consider that lens!
no worries, happy this video helped!
Can't wait till u get that Tamron 17-70, cause im kinda in between Sigma 18-50 and that Tamron. I have a6000 so VC would help but is it worth the price.
It’s a lot bigger and heavier, keep that in mind.
HAVE YOU TRYED VILTROX 20MM F 2.8?
is the 18-105mm has good autofocus speed?
I believe so, yes. It's a great lens for video as well.
Since there are still new lenses released, the system doesn't seem to be dead 😂
there's a weird noise, like clothes moving (i'm using headphones, others might not heard it). great video btw, i didn't want to sound negative, just to point out
Did you correct the barrel distortion for astrophotography with when using the Sigma 16mm? Also, so cute cat, and dog!
For Astro that Sigma 16mm 1.4 would be perfect. If i wanted to buy lens for Astrophotography I would pick that one
@@aleks667 Already have that Lens. I was thinking of replacing both my 16mm f2.8 & 15-50mm with the Sigma Version is it will reduce my lens count but at the same time give me the same thing.
Boom boom!
Second comment! Good vibes from Brazil! 👏
With the sigma 16 mm 1.4 is it hard to focus as it is wired.
Tamron is a great lens company and are a great alternative to some of the very expensive Sony options.
What your opinion about lens 18x250 sigma?
That’s a full frame lens, I have never used it.
What about Sony 50mm F1.8 OSS?
(APS-C variant)
Love that lens. I had it for a short time when I did videos on it. See Sony 35mm f1.8 vs Sony 50mm f1.8.
Which one office these lens has a creamy bokeh effect for videography with Sony ZV-E10 camera ?
Sigma 30mm f.1.4
Viltrox 33mm f.14
Hi ! Would you recommend sigma 56mm for shooting indoor basketball from the baseline ?
Tell me about this lens Sony 55-210mm f4.5-6.3 OSS I know is cheaper and not than expect I plan to buy 18-105MM but I can't now to buy Tamromn.
@@kyletaggart Thank u so much for advice me I wait you respond I don't like the 55-210mm is a cheaper option in all.
what about on a a5100? do these lense work on a5100?
Yep!!
Thanks for finding my corner of the internet!
@@kyletaggart I'm with you! I have worked in IT for over 20 years, almost 15 was hell. I finally have a decent job that doesn't stress me all to pieces. But, if you add in family time, I still don't have enough time to make content the way I would like. When life hits hard, it sucks your creativity like a vampire. I really hope you are able to come back and give yourself a creative outlet and share your talents with us. Good luck and I'll send some positive thoughts your way!
For sony APS-C.
@@kyletaggart yes with the MC-11 adapter from Sigma. Works rather well with my a6500
Can anyone suggest good budget lens for my Sony zv e10 for sports vediography
Sony 55-210mm is a good starter. You can find it used for cheap. Lens to consider after that would be Sony 18-105 f4 G lens.
