      another option is to use throttlestop and to disable turbo boosting, it will affect performance for max possible frames but it also helps with stuttering as when turbo stops it drops frames rapidly. you can also set a maximum temp for thermal throttling to help keep the device from overheating inconsistently, I like to use 92C prochot as once it hits 92 Celsius on the cpu it may gain a few degrees while trying to compensate. (I also had issues with TB3 and other usb connections (but not displayport over TB3???) due to overheating. also one more thing especially true for advanced models, CLEAN YOUR FANS its 2 screws and a small wire after you remove the back cover per fan, that's it, you will void your warranty (which is bs imho) but it does help as razer fans are dust magnets due to how they're designed. so if you're still overheating, it might just be dust buildup blocking exhaust airflow.

    Very informative. A lot of reviews just have these devices for a few weeks and never actually buy them so they don’t dive into long term use and real life concerns and some just use these devices to market their channel. It’s nice to see someone that actually paid hard earn cash go through the experience and as helpful as reviews are I think they need to focus more on real life usage and device optimization rather than just specs, price and looks. I think that is why we see and hear very different stories from reviewers and from forums/posts etc. of people who actually bought these things. Thumbs up on vid👍🏽

    Great video. I was about to return my Razer blade due to the palm rest being too hot, even while performing less demanding tasks. After fine tuning my laptop and bringing the max processor state even lower (at 75%), and also boosting the CPU and GPU performance in Synapse as you described, now it runs much cooler and I can comfortably rest my hands on the palm rest. I can always crank up the performance settings when I need more power.

      95% or 99% should be the default for maximum processor state.
      My laptop for over to 100 c while playing a game and a Japanese translator. Went did some research and found this.
      Based on our experience, we have noticed that that the laptop overheats when the processor is running at 100% processor state. Reducing the processor state by a few notches results in the reduction of temperate by 10-20 C, which results in a minor performance dip. We used Speccy to check for temperate during testing, based on which the processor running on 95% processor state gave the same performance (barely noticeable dip), with a drop of 10-20 C. You can keep an even lower processor state (such as 80-85%) to make sure that your laptop heats up even less.

      No it really doesn't. This is misleading information. What the dude is doing is limiting the CPU to 99% power. Him raising the laptop on a stand is irrelevant as the cpu will not get too hot since it will no longer turbo. That's what limiting the cpu at 99% power does. It disables turbo. So it will not hit 5Ghz. It will stay locked at 2.6Ghz. By extension it will not produce nearly as much heat. I'd love to see a comparison of thermals with laptop flat vs on a stand with the same 99% cpu power limit enabled.

    • @WYSbyAdamLash
      @WYSbyAdamLash  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@austinlucas924 Wow. Thank you for your constructive feedback and reductionistic statement. I guess the hundreds of other comments saying this "misleading" information helped them overcome overheating issues doesn't really matter.

    • @austinlucas924
      @austinlucas924 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WYSbyAdamLash I'm just pointing out the obvious. The ONLY major change between having the laptop lay flat vs being on a stand is the fact you limited the max cpu power to 99%. Of course doing that is going to cut down the heat. This is exactly why you didn't have the max cpu power set to 99% when it was laying flat cause you wouldn't have as good of results to make an actually valid point. You are disabling a 5Ghz max turbo and keeping the machine at 2.6Ghz max. I'm not saying you're wrong for doing it that way. Run your machine how you want. But don't try and point out the difference in air flow if you change such a crucial variable. It invalidates your claim.
      And btw, I have a 2020 RB15 RTX 2070 and can confirm that setting the max cpu power to 99% does NOT change thermals more than 1 or 2°C when comparing the laptop laying flat to being on a stand at 99% cpu power for both. The biggest selling factor here is the cpu power limit. That is what is determing the heat output, thus Temps. You could've kept the laptop laying flat on the table the entire video and changed that one variable and got the same results. Air flow is irrelevant in this argument.

    • @austinlucas924
      @austinlucas924 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WYSbyAdamLash I'm simply saying don't make your video about air flow. Make it about the cpu power limit. That is where your heat savings are at in a laptop. Don't believe me? Go ahead and set your Cpu power limit to 99% and run a stress test with the laptop sitting flat and again with it on a stand and tell me how much the air flow changed the outcome. Then do the same test again with it at 100%.

  • @christianwhitaker535

    I find it funny that I just found this video..
    I've never actually monitored my laptop's temps, but recently decided to just out curiousity to see how warm things were actually getting. And to my surprise my cpu was getting up to 98C and I never would've thought. I've always used the CPU power management like you showed, but since I've finally been monitoring my temps in games I didn't realize how huge the difference was in temps just with 1% change. Went from 98+ to 50-70c (really just depending on the game).
    I hope this video gets a lot more attention. All I ever see in regards to laptop temps is the same 2 things over and over, repasting and undervolting. But this easily the biggest and easiest way to reduce the temps.
    Fyi- another way I've found to help cooling is by using a vertical laptop stand and connecting my laptop to a monitor! Use my laptop all the time just like a would a regular pc and it gets super good air flow. Nice vid man 👍

      Done all of that. Thermal Grizzly liquid metal and 1-1.5-2mm extreme pads. Cooler with modified fans (took two out since they were in the same spot as the inner ones, so they can introduce bad airflow since they are ~2x less rpm).
      All I can say that the laptop is quieter and I am never reaching 100 degrees CPU temps, but overall if the system sees thermal headroom, the performance will increase, so does the temps.. personally have seen my Blade go crazy on the CPU after the repaste and modifications, GPU is the same overall (temps and performance).

    I just got a Razer Blade 14. The best tip I could have for anyone with a gaming laptop would be this: don't use any gaming laptop as your daily gaming driver. If your laptop's usability matters to you on the long run, consider it as a *light* gaming platform second, and a productivity machine first. If you're primarily a PC gamer, you *should* eventually invest in a decent desktop, seeing as desktops have the benefit of not requiring something that's as sensitive as an onboard battery. To add to this, if your PSU fails, it's a lot easier to open an ATX build and rip out a dead PSU than it is to replace a battery on a gaming laptop. On the plus side, this means you can decrease your overall laptop budget, seeing as it just won't be your daily driver.
    Think 16 GB setups are starting to be borderline for newer titles? Just don't play them on a laptop. It doesn't matter: if you're like me, your Steam Library is nearing nineteen years of activity and you've got hundreds of lighter games sitting in your backlog and plenty of AAA releases that now are as demanding to run as your average indie release. Cult of the Lamb is a laptop shoo-in for me, but The Witcher III is desktop-only, for instance.
    I've been using the RTX 3060 model of the Blade 14, and considering my choice of games, I haven't really felt any problems concerning its smaller VRAM count. Plus, the Blade line of laptop uses Chicklet keys, and these are absolute murder for FPS titles. Even if you're just an occasional Counter-Strike player, I would *not* recommend you pick a gaming laptop as your main driver.
    If you're primarily a console gamer and just need something to handle everyday stuff with some light gaming on the side, all of the above applies.
    Oh, and if portability matters to you and you don't need a PC to cover the usual boring parts of everyday adult life (emails, accounting, etc.) then consider splurging on a Steam Deck or one of its equivalents, instead. You'll get what you're looking for, which is an excuse to bring your Steam library on the go.

    • @WYSbyAdamLash
      @WYSbyAdamLash  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your feedback. Good points you made here but to each their own. Portability is essential for me, and that's why I prefer gaming laptops over bulky desktops: I love the idea of gaming anywhere I want. However, you're right that desktop rigs are more durable, reliable, and powerful than laptops. All of these tips and tricks, "aka shenanigans," are no match for a powerful desktop's graphic and thermal capabilities.

    Needs 1 mil views, this is huge for ANY laptop not just Razer. Thanks for not rushing it and taking your time to explain clearly.
    One thing you also didn't mention is that it says 34 watts of power without the techniques you used, while it says 13 watts of power with them. Is there a correlation with something there?

    Yes! Finally someone talks about how "acceptable" laptop heat is actually cooking the batteries. Funny how manufacturers no have INCREASED the battery thermal limit to 100 c, so the high laptop temps can be normalized. As if stamping a higher temp limit on the battery will ACTUALLY increase the battery's heat resistance.

    Hi. Just wanted to share with you my experience which is 2 days old! xD so 2 days ago I bought razer 15 rtx3070 i7-107750h(base model). First of all I am not using any extra laptop cooling pads for airflow. I downloaded dota2. First day I played and guess what, laptop was so hot and when I say hot I mean it, I was worrying about laptop inside parts so I stopped to play (I'm sorry my teammates, couldn't play like that). Next day after 1 day ban(deserved) I played again but I changed in razer synapse-system- performance from balanced to gaming and set to manual and almost highest fan speed 5300- so playing dota2 laptop was still hot but not that much like first time but still hot and I didn't like that. So after that game I changed in power setting from 100% to 99% and I set gaming mode 5300 fan speed again and here we go, so good!!! Temperature isn't that high anymore. I am not using any program to check exactly how much temperature was at that moment but I am pretty sure it was high and now its comfortable and I barely can feel any heat. Thank you for your video! Also for my razer synapse I don't have option or I can't see where I can manually boost CPU like you, only 3 options.
    Well since I wrote an essay here, maybe someone will read next part xD I want to share my pain with macbook pro13(2019 model) which I use only for work (meetings, mostly using msTeam and Zoom and editing programs and guess what even watching twitch macbook pro 13 is getting SO HOT i am afraid it will melt xD and that was since day 1. Then as a big fool who is reading forum AFTER I buy laptop I started to read in forums that there is a bad cooling system. I went to official dealer I asked them is this normal they were like "well, we can't do anything, it's how it's made". a small machine with super cpus, graphic cards in, good screens have a ONE BIG problem and it's a cooling system. And all those techreview videos where people are hyping others are saying "mega new laptop, so good gaming, yes yes bla bla" noone is talking about cooling system, I suggest them to work with that laptop atleast 1 month. Anyway thanks for the video, really helped. :) Have a nice day!

    Great advice, you certainly covered a topic that no one else even bothered with. The 1% drop in cpu perf. made a big difference. However, when I'm just streaming or doing light work, the temp's are between 50-55 degrees with a dual monitor (144hz) setup. You mentioned in your other vid that you were only getting 30 something degrees so I was wondering if you can provide some solutions or share some insights.

    I’ve had my razer blade 17 for a year now. I just opened it up last month to upgrade the storage and so far the battery has no sign of buldge I’ve also noticed that ever since I’ve gotten the laptop the palm rest area isn’t that hot and sometimes is barely hot at all when playing games. I think the 3rd fan being by the batteries is why. I also never leave my laptop plugged in when I’m gone cause I believe that also the reason why these laptops buldge.

      Thanks for your feedback. Good for you man. Take care of this beautiful laptop. I made this video to extend the lifespan of the laptop as much as possible. Much to my surprise, nobody from TH-cam talked about operating the laptop at temps above 65C which is detrimental to your battery's health. The retailer told me they received several complaints of bulging batteries for last year's model, and Reddit is full of posts and pics of people who suffered battery problems like this (watch my previous video on the Razerblade). I simply connected the dots when I did research on battery health. Razer's battery clearly says not to operate the battery above 65C, but Razer's tech support told me that is the "window operating temperature" meaning your laptop is built to withstand more heat during gaming. The problem is if you subject your laptop to prolonged overheating (above 65C). Your battery may bulge, swell, or at least reduce its capacity.

    I have same Razer blade as your and I just send my blade to Razer under a RMA . After three painful months crossing mails with tech support, they finally ask me to send my computer to be check out . I did same things like you less the power plan configuration . During CoD MW or Doom eternal gaming sessions it reach some peaks of 100 C !! And was running over 84 C - 88 C. This is my very first Razer and to be honest I’m kind of sad and disappointed , these are not cheap laptops . I expect more for it, at least a good perform like yours. I hope is a factory problem and get it back soon at home with all problems fixed . Great video , clear , useful and informative . Keep doing it ! Sorry to hear about your disappointing experience. If it's any consolation, I too was disappointed with Razer's quality control since my first unit was defective (keyboard problem) and got it replaced. I checked the second unit thoroughly, but after a couple of days I had clouding issues on the screen. However, Razer was supportive and told me I can return it again with no problem. I was able to solve the screen clouding issue by simply wiping the screen. I feel for you man; an expensive laptop like this should have no problems whatsoever, and it seems ridiculous to check the laptop before you buy as you expect a new product to be just that: new and problem free. However, I am now very happy with it as I was able to solve the thermal issue with the steps mentioned in this video, and the design of the laptop is what captivated me. Have you tried all the steps mentioned here? If you did, your temps should be around 65 to 70 C max. Did you get a laptop stand to help with the airflow? Did you crank up the fans with Razer Synapse or set performance for GPU and CPU to max which would automatically set the fans to the highest setting as needed? Good luck man and let me know if you have any questions. Oh yeah, and update me with your laptop's status.

I have a blade 15 2020 advanced, and almost 2 years in, I noticed that the track pad was stiff. If anyone reads this, immediately open up your laptop and remove your battery. It is definitely swelling up and will damage your machine, if not worse.

    This is quite informative and it works, but I want to point out something. Swapping out from the game to the desktop doesn't accurately show the temp of the CPU. I hooked my blade to another display and have Core Temp running to check and I've noticed that the temp drops when I switched to Desktop, and goes back up to 80-90 when I switch to the game (Valorant).
    My temp right now while gaming is around 70 - 80(sometimes going slightly above 80). I used your tutorial (processor 90%, laptop stand, increase fan RPM, Synpase set to Balance), together with a cooling fan at the bottom. This kept my processor to around 4.20Ghz when I'm doing music(temp around 60). For games, I think the processor went to around 3.8Ghz (maybe games don't require high CPU). GPU temp is around 70.
    Hope this helps!

      No, it isn't. However, if you ask other people, or even Razer, they might say that it's normal. It's not, at least not for the battery. Even if the battery is away from the CPU cores, you can feel all that ambient heat! Unfortunately, there is no battery sensor for Windows laptops- unlike what you see in iStat Menus for Macs for example. You can't really know if battery temps are nearing 65C, but you can reduce overall laptop temps. These kind of temps may not have an effect on your laptop in the short term, but in the long term, 6 months or more, you might see signs of deterioration (swelling, reduced charging capacity, etc...). Always try to maintain lower temps, max at 75C.

    If you run a blade 15 make sure you repeatedly check your performance settings in synapse. I believe (not 100% sure) that my setting changed to auto from custom boost while I was playing elden ring day 1, running up temps like crazy. Next morning, my graphics card was unreadable and I had to send it to Razer support after a weekend of paainful troubleshooting (could detect device in manager, but not bios, and could not use it, couldn't install drivers or use Nvidia control panel, etc). Now the PC is a 3200 brick. Hoping my warranty covers repairs.

      That may sound ideal, but ultimately it boils down to thermals. If you exceed 75C due to boosting, then it would be counterintuitive because your battery would ultimately pay the price. Even without boosting, the laptop can comfortably run most taxing games at 60 FPS with ultra settings.

Changing synapse as per video, and then playing Tomb Raider 2013 max settings reduced temps, reduced fan noise, but increased FPS. This benefit was verified in game using hwinfo and RTS, and also in the benchmark. Higher FPS, higher average FPS, and improved lower FPS. Temps were reduced all round, not just CPU. For anyone watching, take these temp goals with a grain of salt. The battery and processors are on opposite sides. The reported temps aren't indicative of the battery temps or even how hot the air inside the laptop is. These are useful tips for improving thermals, but you really don't need to avoid your CPU going over 65°. CPUs can comfortably sustain temps around 70-80° and while above that is okay to a point, you wanna aim below 80° to avoid decreasing the lifespan of the chip.
    If you're mainly worried about the battery overheating (a reasonable concern given the common issues), using a riser/stand like he shows here is gonna make by far the biggest difference as the battery is just beneath where you rest your wrists and much more likely to heat up with your wrists on top and a flat surface, or worse, a cushioned surface (ex your lap or bed) below. Hope this relaxes some of you. Happy gaming!

    • @WYSbyAdamLash
      @WYSbyAdamLash  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your feedback. Please refer to the description under the video and refer to the battery health reference provided. CPU temps above 65C are not good for your battery as well, despite being away from the battery. It's common sense really; the laptop's ambient heat is adequate to damage the battery in the long run or at least reduce its performance. I have seen many people complaining about bulging batteries or reduced capacities, and the correlation between overall laptop temps (including CPU temps) and battery health is very strong. Now, if you are able to remove your battery like in the older laptop models, then yes I would agree with you. Temps above 65C can easily be tolerated by a running laptop as they are designed to, but without a battery.

      @@WYSbyAdamLash "In case these temperatures (>60°) are only achieved when using the laptop intensively (games, etc.) then, there's no reason to worry." Q&A section re:CPU temps.
      This is also a very generalized approach to hardware from what looks like years ago judging by the look of the site and references to stuff like Windows 8.
      By no means am I saying thermals aren't a concern, I just think people taking 65° as a hard goal are going to unnecessarily stress over their thermals and tune down their machines to a fault when they won't gain anything from it.

  • @jk35260
    @jk35260 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The primary effect of elevating laptop is that it creates more air space below the laptop. This in turn affects the air flow depending on the design.
    Take for instance where inlet vents are at the bottom of the laptop and outlets are at rear side. When the laptop is elevated, the air flow at the bottom flows more easily and hence you get slightly higher rate of air flow in and out of the vents. This translate to more efficient cooling and less power needed for cooling.
    Ironically, typical laptop cooling pad do not help improve air flow due to bad air flow mechanics as they just don't function as intended.

    Your battery won't see the same temperature as the CPU. It will be much cooler. Monitoring the nvme or hard drive temp would give an idea but those are obviously also hotter than the battery. On my new used Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen1 with i7-8750H running continuously at 97C, the nvme is only 31C when the load drops and up to 44C when heavier reads. I'm in a room with A/C at 26C. Both the bottom and top of the palmrest area, where the battery is located, are perfectly cool. The jet-like fans were a shock because my Lenovo T530 is always silent. I'm going to try a laptop cooler that hopefully has a fan that will move more air with less noise. I selected the Deepcool N1 cooler because the fan is a hole in a plate (so less bypass and mixing of hot and cold air) that is like a bathtub with a grill top. I will place some foam tape in a rectangle that matches the fan opening of the laptop so that fresh cool air is being blown through the laptop. The rest of the air will cool the underside of the laptop. I can potentially add plates or baffles to try to direct air to the hot spots or a larger proportion forced into the laptop. Hopefully the freewheeling fans won't be as noisy as when they are powered. Will see...

    The advice about the percentage of energy is really useless, if you got a laptop with 300hz mean that you are going to need a lot por cpu power to reach 180+fps in standar AAA games, and just by setting the energy in 99% could make the frequency of the cpu drop quite a lot(from what i have seen, about 20% to 50% of loose), it is better to do undervolting, i have done it in my laptop (nitro 5, i7-9750h and rtx2060) and got from 97℃ to 83℃ without losing performance.
    PD: in my opinion the thing about the battery is quite useless too, the temperature show in the screen means the temperature just above the cpu and gpu, not the whole laptop
    PD2: another good thing to do is to clean fans and change thermal paste to reduce temperature

My Blade 15 2020 RTX 2070 keeps cpu at 78C under load. So im not sure what the issue is youre referring to? If you are looking at max temps when cpu turbos, yeah it'll go up to around 94C max for a second or two then drop down to 78C when clocks fall from 5ghz to 3.2ghz, which is higher than the 2.6ghz (i7-10750H)base you are suggesting people lock their cpu too.
