Maybe he saw him use before the running on the wall trick that he uses later for following catwoman in the batsignal building. But this time either was to high for that or he needed to glide away since it would be swarm by police men at the bottom.
maybe he knew batman had a wingsuit ready? They've been working together for two years and they have a pretty close work relationship, they trust each other to an extent
It's a valid point; Gordon knows enough about Batman after two years to know he's resilient and prepared for a lot, including what to do when needing to get off a rooftop or very high places. It'd be easy to figure out that Batman spends a lot of time in heights where ordinary people don't go. Also, obviously (the intelligent man he is, who has gadgets for many things) would have considered needing a way to survive jumping from a roof or skyscraper.
If I were him I'd rationalize that someone who dresses up like a bat could probably do something with falling or flying so roof probably was best last resort all things considered
And that's acting, because Pattinson has no fear of heights. He's jumped out of a plane, parachuting when he was in Australia, and he did most of his own stunts in Tenet, and John David Washington is afraid of heights. He said he "took his courage" from Rob, because Rob was fearless about their stunts where they had to jump off a building.
I love how Batman is depicted in this movie. It reminds the audience that Batman is really just a man not some metahuman, and you're reminded of this fact every time he gets hurt, limps or struggles to pull himself on a scaffolding.
De mythologising Batman is really fresh when you look at every other serious Batman movie. Tim Burton made him into a pseudo horror character, Nolans Batman made him into more of an idea that doesn't grow it just reinforces itself across the trilogy (even his setback in TDKR is overcome by Bruce's freakish belief in his own creation). Reeves Batman has an actual character arc that needs to be expounded on in the sequel (whereas Batmans character in 89' and Begins were largely ignored in sequels), they show Bruce Wayne less than ever but you see him more in his Batman IMO.
I love how this Batman is so real, and human. He doesn't do some sort of weird disappearing act like Bale's James Bond-like Batman does, he has to run. And, he has fear, like any man would have if he had to jump off a building with a bunch of cops running after to murder him. Loved this movie a lot.
1:33 I like how Batman just gets a bit sacred when he realises how high he is, and then instantly pulls himself together because that's he's only escape.
I love how badass this version of Batman is. Surrounded and completely outnumbered by enemies at the time (with the exception of Gordan), trapped inside their confined territory, yet he isnt giving a dam or holding back in the slightest. An absolute masterpiece of a scene. From the moment they had an unconcious Batman on the table, to when he woke up and chaos ensued, all the way to this. One of my favourite scenes from what I consider to be the best Batman movie to date (narrowly edging out The Dark Knight).
I love how this Batman is simeltaneously badass but at the same time inexperienced, he hesitates before flying, he kind of f*cks up parts of his investigation, he gets hurt, he has a hard time socialising, etc. etc. Very refreshing to see Batman who's flawed, still a force of nature but at the same time reminded that he's a human being.
I love how they showed this version of Batman is still very human. He’s hesitant to jump from great heights, and he hasn’t mastered gliding just yet. After he crashes you can tell he’s genuinely hurting.
He should be dead or limping for the rest of the movie after that crash. Instead, he’s completely fine in the next scene with no visible bruises. Let’s also not forget that he takes a bomb to the face with no visible damage. Dumb.
Not sure how he proved anyone wrong, he got so much praise after the first trailer. Only negative comments I saw were people claiming to have seen negative comments
The people that don't like battison were probably the toxic snyder cult because they keep saying ben is their batman and im like, well you can have him as your batman, and I can have my batman
the feeling I had watching this movie was really good , as if I was watching a detective movie from the 70's and 80's but with Batman , it was really a lot of fun

Loved this scene. How he's afraid of what's in front of him for one second, and then quickly reacts and pushes himself through it is what got me... When he landed severely, I was slightly disappointed when I first watched it in the theatre. But, then, I remembered that this was his second year as a vigilante. So, what Matt Reeves did totally makes sense. I highly believe that there's a lot to discover with the character they created.
Really like how they used a wingsuit that looks really hard to control instead of the traditional cape to glide. Cos when Batman glides with the cape in the other movies it's always a triumphant moment where he's in total control. The wingsuit gets across a better idea of this Batman's uncertainty and risk.
That's how Matt Reeves said he wanted to portray Batman in this movie, that he's always barely making it out and on the edge. I mean it makes more sense since he's just a man in a suit fighting against crime by himself.
In which way exactly? Stupidly opening his parachute just in front of a bridge? He's been doing it for 2 years and still can't do a basic Batman thing right?

One thing i love about the gliding here vs TDK trilogy is that both Batmen resemble different bats. Bales looks more like hes flying so his flight resembles a flying fox, while Pattinsons resembles more a vampire bat with how the gliding is more of a fast descent
which is trange they never explained how much time bruce wayne was batman in the nolan trilogy, plus you can say he get most of his gadget early since he had lucius fox help, unlike this one that he had everything home made including the batmovil that look less like a tank and more like a mad max remodeled car

Anyone else feel that Pattinson's punches in this movie sound like they would really hurt ? Specially when he punches Gordon here and the twins outside iceberg lounge.
It’s so weird that this is what folks are complaining about. This is probably the least embarrassing thing a live action Batman has done in the past 10 years.
Well personally I'm complaining about him obviously being a terminator T-101 unit or something: he should have landed in pieces there. It totally breaks any semblance of suspension of disbelief. He gets a hit like that and he's like "ow :( " and _walks away_.
I was playing the Riddler Flight School challenge in Arkham Knight after seeing this movie and one of Riddler's dialogues was about how bats are the only mammals that fly but since Batman only glides, he's actually a kind of squirrel. It made me remember this scene, lol.
I love how hardboiled noir the dialogue in this movie is. It makes it feel straight out of the comics or something. "who's the mustache with the broken nose?" Is one of my favorite lines in any batman movies, its just so delicious and noir.
Watching this film in IMAX was the best thing I ever experienced, especially this scene, the music and cinematography is just perfection, also Batman crashing on 2:05 was a real stunt
This was one of my favourite scene in the movie. This, the squabble at the police station and the scene when he first walks in while the cops stare at him like he's a freak. A+!
When I first watched this, I was not expecting him to have a gliding suit on to glide, looked weird at first but then understood that this was suppose to be more realistic version of Batman’s gliding and it looks cool as well.
Better piece of media ever produced in the history of human race? I think we should send this movie to space to greet aliens, we need nothing else, this movie alone is enough to show how great we are as a species. And needlessly to say, Matt Reeves should be appointed the new God-Emperor of Planet Earth. He's the best human that ever lived.
I know it's been a year but POOR REVIEWS? Where? As far as I remember literally everyone loved this movie, even started a debate comparing it to The Dark Knight in terms of quality
I really love how realistic the overall aesthetics of this movie. The gadgets, Batmobile, ambience, and many more. The only things that I think not so realistic were the time Bats took a bomb on his face and Penguin's car being flown away just from a single bump from the Batmobile.
This movie combines fiction with reality better than the Nolan films, so I don't think that this movie should always be viewed as 100% realistic, because that's impossible.
Matt Reeves is truly a careful and crafty director. If you notice carefully, he hits the skylight of the bridge exclusively with his chest, never with his face, head or neck. Just as in the bomb scene Bruce covers his face with his arms. Well done Matt

Everyone wants a batman without fear of jumping from great heights, flying without any problem and and landing like a hero, the problem here is that those who ask for it and complain about this batman would not have the balls to do what he did
@MSR Sculpts loophole? He literally admits it in the hospital scene with Alfred, the character was written like this, it's supposed to be a character development over the span of three (or hopefully more) movies.
@MSR Sculpts your comment makes absolutely 0 sense. We're supposed to watch Batman conquer his fears and learning how to be Batman OVER THE SPAN OF MANY MOVIES, not just the first one. I don't know what's so hard to understand about that :| it's just a different take on the development of the character. Nolan made his batman flat, it worked but it was flat over the span of most of the trilogy. This a different take
@MSR Sculpts yeah, I understand you don't like that, but it doesn't mean it's a loophole, or that it's badly written, it just means it's different, the majority of people liked it, a bunch didn't.
@MSR Sculpts no it's not a loophole it's just different and like rami fanboys they hate it when a hero has a different take by a completely different author which is hilarious since if you don't like this just stick to the older films that came before it
This scene was one of my favorite scenes in movie. The soundtrack played perfectly and I loved the foot chase in the police station. Reeves really showed that Batman doesn't not have all of the tools to make a swift getaway.
Gotta say that this is like a more grow-up style of Batman movie. I love the trilogy, but growing up it become kindda cartoonist. This one blending realism and fiction together so well that it become more relatable and believeable. Nothing too crazy but not boring. The most important thing is Batman is not perfect like in other movie or comic. He is still a human. He feels fear, make mistakes, and no too all-purpose gadgets. Just a crazy man doing crazy things for his city and people. Love it!
Great comment I agree although sadly the comics have taken a completely different direction. It seems Batmans limits have receded to the point where he’s basically Spider-Man. He’s kicked a tree in half without wearing the suit! He’s ripped doors of a jet whilst in flight. A JET!! and he’s held his breath in space for less then a minute. Man simplicity has gone out the window. This is why I prefer the films not because their “realistic” but because they represent the essence of the character at heart.
My favorite version of Gordon to date. Loved the other takes too but Jeffery Wright takes the cake. He's a damn good actor and did a phenomenal job. Can't wait for The Batman 2! Bring on the Court of Owls.

The scene right after this where Gordon says “Man U could’ve pulled that punch” the way Pattinson looked as he said “I did” was the final confirmation for me that I was in fact looking at THE Batman💯
I love that his cape has another feature besides looking cool. The shots of him flying really remind me of Spiderman swinging through the city in Amazing Spiderman. You really feel like you're flying with him.
0:13 I really thought Gordon was siding with the cops until this part happened I enjoyed the little twist here and it was smart for both to pretend that Their having a heated discussion
I really love how funny this scene is, Gordon having to gesture looking mad while conspiring with Batman to help him escape is a really cute visual gag
A film with an excellent soundtrack, a perfect storyline, a great cast, great effects, and emotion, it was literally a masterpiece and an unforgettable movie, and I have nothing negative to say about it. Truly worth it, and can't wait for the future of this Batman trilogy!
The power of this scene lies in the vulnerability of Batman. It's hard to watch that he is running away , and it feels unreal that Batman is afraid of heights but this is true Batman in making.
Aside from the end where he ricochets off the bus and lives, I feel like this is the most physically realistic protrayal of Batman. He didn't just vanish when know one was looking, he had to sprint down the hallway. Imagine trying to grapple up the height of a building. The acceleration would put so much strain on ur arm if not just dislocate it entirely. Pattinson sells the difficulty in holding on to the grapple gun. The glide omg. I've seen those extreme gliders in real life and they go fast! It's not like the Arkham games where u glide gracefully ahaha This was my favorite sequence in the film
0:22 Pattinson literally chuckled while maintaining a grizzly scowl. Never once lost his frown, but conveyed such intense emotion, true to the most popular trait of that character, to a T. God damn
The hesitation and the poor landing are nice indicators that this is a year two Batman. Also the events of this scene is the reason why Batman isn't called to investigate at Wayne Tower later on. To the complaint he would not survive this, I say Rhody should have been jelly after falling in the War Machine suit in Civil War. It's a comic book movie based on a fictional character.
I remember my cousin saying out loud in the theaters "Don't go under, don't go under!" in those seconds that Batman was deciding if he'd go over or under the overpass

I love how badass this version of Batman is. Surrounded and completely outnumbered by enemies at the time (with the exception of Gordan), trapped inside their confined territory, yet he isnt giving a dam or holding back in the slightest. Literally batman the animated series in live action
But Batman was always meant to be a detective. That's his origin. He even studied criminology.
I feel like the sequel will have him gliding with his cape to show that he’s coming into his own
The director wanted a very realistic version of batman
this is supposed to be a less fantastical version
Technically the cape forms the wingsuit
That's how Matt Reeves said he wanted to portray Batman in this movie, that he's always barely making it out and on the edge. I mean it makes more sense since he's just a man in a suit fighting against crime by himself.
