  • HOLLOW IRON BATTLE: TAYLORMADE P790 v MIZUNO MP20 HMB IRONS
    With lots of manufacturers making hollow headed irons two of the best go head to head with the TaylorMade P790 taking on the Mizuno MP20 HMB. Both great clubs packed full of technology but which is the best?

    Consistency seemed way better on the mizuno. Had some silly numbers on the P790. That would be an issue in real golf...

    Had a fitting a couple of weeks ago and had my heart set on the P790's but the front to back dispersion with the Mizunos was way tighter for me. Just waiting for them to arrive.

      Agree, +/- 2.2 yds vs +/- 13 yds. Unless there was a trackman error one p790 jumped above 190 yds carry, would fly over most greens in real play.

  • @curtisl476

    Why not talk about that 195 P790 hit? My playing partners have experienced the same thing, the hot long strike with 790. The consistency of the HMB wins and in my opinion it looks much better as well.

  • @seancook2264
    @seancook2264 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Key concern with P790 is distance control, one strike is 3mm low and 3mm in the toe and flies 195 (194.8) yards and two shots before a middled strike 5mm in the toe travels 175 (175.2) yards. So a strike that is 2-3mm difference from centre is coming up with 20 yards difference in carry! That is fundamentally the difference between being pin high on the green or over the back in the hay or on the next tee box!

  • @frankarce5242
    @frankarce5242 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Front to back dispersion was a couple yards with the Mizuno but over 20 yards with the p790, it seems like the p790 is not consistent when you do not hit the middle.

      You can't score with a 40 yard difference between a good and bad strike. So much for forgiveness resulting in better dispersion!

    • @fsnicolas
      @fsnicolas 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was going to say the same thing. On two good strikes one carried 172 yards and the other almost 195. More than 20 yards difference on same strike and same speed. Not good.

      Questioning his bias if he's completely ignoring the horrible inconsistency of the P790. Plus it looks better than the Mizuno? The P790 is one of the most 'blah' irons I've ever seen.

  • @CH-RC
    @CH-RC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Here’s a problem with the P790 straight away - I bought a set of these and went back to blades for this reason: the difference between a good strike and one that’s slightly off can see a massive difference in distance. A scoring iron like a 7 iron, deviating by 20 or more yards in the hands of someone who good striking ability is next to useless on the course.

  • @TkJarvis
    @TkJarvis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Distance control with the P790 is inferior to the Mizuno. Looks are very important no doubt, but how can you plan for a hot ball carry 20-30 yards over the green?

    One of those P790 shots went 195 carry/213 total when the rest were in the 160-180 carry range. The MP20s were quite a bit more consistent and carried around the same overall with 1.5 less loft. Could be a misread I guess though when I hit the P790 I had similar results with 1 out of 5 15 yards further than the others.

    After watching several reviews of the Mizuno HMB's, the only complaint I heard was slightly more chunky top line. My question is, if you didn't have the clubs side by side would you notice the top line at all?

      Andy Seidler I just tried both at a fitting. Currently play MP-64, which is and the same size as the blades, so both are much larger than what I'm used to but I'm getting old so looking for more help. The 6-iron basically the same size - the P790 is 1-1.5mm shorter. The HMB looks chubbier because Mizuno rounded the topline where TaylorMade beveled it. I prefer the TM look & the P790 is a fantastic iron for slower speed players. I ended up going with the HMB because they were really consistent front to back, which makes my total shot area much smaller than with the P790s. When you really catch it right, the P790 goes DEEP & that's not what I want.

    Definitely can't go wrong with either club brand. I've already go the 790s, and I tested the new ones, but didn't notice much difference. At least not enough to go for the new. I'm waiting to try the MP-20s and see if they can crack open my wallet. I like their blendability.

    What are your thoughts on the play ability of the HMB for a 15 HC, Don't have a ton of swing speed, 78 to 80 mph with a 6 iron. Have no problem getting the 900 Forged up in the air, 6 iron carry distance about 145'ish.

Not a criticsm as you can obviously strike it, just wondering. Also, don't forget to mention the P790 is 1.5 degrees stronger in the 7 iron.

    • @canyonaro
      @canyonaro 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just did a trackman fitting and man that P790 ball speed was FUN. I ended up turning it down for the HMB because distance dispersion was much tighter, I liked the feel better, and they're so gorgeous in the bag (sounds stupid but golf is a mental game).
      FWIW I've played TM irons in the past but current set is Mizuno. Mizunos also age very well - I've seen PXGs only a few years old that look like total garbage.
      It wasn't enough to beat out the HMB for me but also give the Titleist T200 a try. I've always hated Titleist irons but the fitter made me try them and I was blown away. Another really good option.

    Does Europe shape players into "Draw" players rather than "Fade" Players? Noticing almost all reviewers that are coaches tend to draw everything as opposed to the Americans.

    • @justinbukoski1
      @justinbukoski1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a complete over generalization but as Americans we play baseball as kids which is naturally an out to in swing. No bad habits for Europeans to get over. Even with cricket, you have a low, in to out swing which promotes a draw.
