This was my address at the 35th anniversary meeting of Atheist United on Sept 24th 2017. It was held in the Griffith Park Visitor's Center, because their usual venue, the famous Steve Allen Theater on Hollywood Blvd had just been sold and was no longer available.

Many thanks to Bobbi Kirkhart who hosted us at Heretic House.

You've got to admit that whoever came up with the Jesus story had a sense of comic irony, though... I mean, the character's a carpenter and he's defeated by being nailed to some planks of wood, i.e. death by carpentry.

My mother also denies that the Bible says the disgusting things it does. She also says "it doesn't say that" after I show her that it does "you're misinterpreting it".

I reply to my own family who say that with, "So you think the Bible is literally true, every word... except where doesn't mean what it clearly says. Got it."

    • @plasticiconoclastic
      @plasticiconoclastic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

I would ask your mother how she has come to that conclusion; by what modality has she arrived at that ("How do you know that this is misinterpreted?"). I would mention that she doesn't have a monopoly on interpretations, as the doctrine has been used to create thousands of iterations -- denominations -- of the same religion; this isn't including the countless people who are non-denominational, the number of interpretations just as numerous, varied and disparate as the people who make them. However, I should mention that it very likely won't make any difference; denial, specifically without sound rationale, is a defense mechanism. You will seldom find any who is willing to admit they're wrong, and it's even more difficult when deeply personal things, such as religion, are involved -- too much ego tied into it. Keep in mind that these people believe they're effectively immortal; that they're worthy of having an identity that persists beyond death. This doctrine exploits the egotistical nature of the my-shitteth-doth-not-stinketh humanimal; it exploits the desires of people to be around those that they love, even when those that they love are dead. How can anything be "righteous" when it shamelessly exploits desires?

plasticiconoclastic Exactly. The god of the Bible himself is a projection of the human ego. He knows everything that people who believe in him know so he might seem omniscient from their perspective, however he only EVER knows what these people know and NOTHING beyond that.
Which is why they usually have such a hostile, visceral reaction when someone rejects "god". Because in their mind (even if it is subconscious) that amounts to rejecting them. And the more emotionally invested they are, the more hostile that reaction is going to be.

People 6,000 years ago weren't stupid; they were ignorant. Given proper knowledge they would be on equal footing with us. No baby knows calculus when they are born, but all they need is a good teacher, and they could learn it before they are 20 years old. A book could be that good a teacher. That book could also teach a language that would remain in use. Once everyone reads, language change gets slow. Especially if it contains a glossary.

    • @Yal_Rathol

CorwynGC hey, since you're writing a book anyway, why not release multiple editions? you could release a dictionary that contains enough basic concepts to unify the world's language and grammar, so that various cultures all speak roughly the same tongue when they encounter each other.
and unlike a person, you wouldn't have to expend any energy to create these multiple editions. _because you're a god._

I wish we were religion free and douchebag free, but wishing, just like praying is futile.

I was raised a Catholic in Germany. For me, the transition was painless: No one in our community believed that the Old Testament was literal. We all understood that there was never an ark, and that Moses didn't part the Red Sea or wandered 40 years through the desert. It was just allegories. So I went from, "God exists, but the Bible is fiction" to "God doesn't exist".

"Thou shalt boil thine drinking water and wash thy hands before surgery, or before preparing or eating food and after covering thy feet (using the toilet) for these animals are plentiful in thy filth and these things will kill the animals that make you sick."
"I hath made thy filth to stinketh that ye shall know not to partake of it. That thy should know not to allow it to contaminate thy drinking water"
"If a man should become sick, despite thy cleanliness and thy care to dispose of thy filth properly feed unto him the mold of bread, for I maketh that mold to cure your diseases."
How can you explain germ theory and the use of penicillin in the Bronze Age?

"That slavery thing? Yeah, don't do that."

"If you ever have any problems with unbelievers just cry out my name. I'm omniscient, I will hear you. I can't promise a personal appearance, but I'll at least send an angel."
"I know a lot of you lot are going to doubt my afterlife thing, since no-one ever comes back to confirm what I'm telling you. So guided tours are every fifth Sunday. If you want to see for yourself, I'll know."

Roxor128 yes, but we don't literally assume people are innocent in courts/trials until proven guilty. that just means that the way the law is set up, the burden of proof is on the state/prosecutors to prove the suspect's guilt, as opposed to the suspect having to prove his innocence.
the equivalent to what aron said would be, "if you can't prove/show a person is guilty, then they are (literally)innocent."(not saying you are claiming this, or don't understand it, I'm just saying.)

*You are just asserting something about the supposed anti-theists without giving any of their arguments or your counter- arguments.*
I gve counter arguments to Aaron Ra in this page, so...
*There is no such thing as a singlevgroup of anti-theists,*
      Rubbish.
*all believing same things and all acting identically.*
Poppycock. The Rational Responders, The Freedom From Religion Foundation, The RIchard Dawkins group, The Council For Secular Humanism, American Atheists, The National Secular Society, and dozens of orginisatiosn do exist that plainly do have shared beliefs and values.
      *Everyone is different.*
This applies to any group. You know those Christians you make fun of? Not a one of them is 100% Identical in beliefs and behaviours to others, even if they go to not just the same "Denomination", but same actual Church.
But there are shared beliefs and values in the Atheist Community.
And you can easily prove this if you just listen to the arguments, which are always the same.
*Some are crazy, others are very good people and everything in-between.*
That applies to Christians like I said, but that does't stop you lot from saygn they are all Brainwashed ZOmbies.
*Many, if not most, atheists are former Christians who became atheist because they were reading their Bible very carefully.*
This is a complete Lie. If they had read the Bile very carefully they'd never make idiotic arguments like the whole Bible teaches Pi is 3 bit, or talk about how God hates knowledge because he forbade Adam and Eve from eating from The Tree Of Knowledge, or continue to use Psalm 137:9 as if it proved God and the Bibel promoted the murder of babies.
They haven't read the Bible at all, much less been careful with it. They kjust visit a tone of Atheist websites and get arguments from other Atheists to use to back up their "Atheism", which is really just an excuse to mock and belittle Christians.
Most Atheists haven't read the Bible at all.
*And it doesn't happen overnight, it can take many years of observation and independent study to come out from the psychological hold that religion can have on people.*
Yeah here's the thing, the whole idea that Atheists aren't Religious is a Lie. The modern day Atheist Movement is a Religion, and one that brainwasheds its followers the same way you insist Christianity does.
Atheists like you don't know the first Thing about the Bible, its History, or Christianity. You just repeat the Dogmas of the Religion Of Atheism.
      And that's why I don't buy it.
I'm not Rationalising anything, you are.
I took the Time to get a degree in Religious Studies. I actually do know what I'm talking about. That's why I'm tired of hearign about COnstantine having the Bible Cannon made or Jesus beign a copy of Horus or other idiocy.

I was sitting on my mother's lap, and my older siblings were singing Star Light, Star Bright, etc. I asked why, and my mother explained they were wishing, but that wishing was just make believe. Then I asked her "What are the stars?" And without missing a beat she told me that the Bible said the sky was the veil, or thin cloth, of Heaven, and the stars were the angels looking through at us, keeping watch. I turned to her and asked, "But, what are they really?" and she then told me "Scientists believe they are just like the sun, only farther away, so far that they are just tiny spots to us" Guess which one I chose to believe?

After years of believing in god I found these videos and other atheist videos. All very logical and full of constructive arguments.
That isn't what changed my mind.
My 14 year old daughter did with 1 simple question.
    1) If God is omnipotent, all seeing and all knowing, why do we have to be told about him by other people and not directly by him himself?
I couldn't answer her and that's what changed my mind. I've since wondered myself at how much bullshit I believed and I also find it amazing people would call you mad for believing in the easter bunny but a mystical all knowing being that never shows up but like some creepy voyeur watches your every move and judges you on it.
With this new outlook I've also come to realise that if their is no god and, by logical extension, no devil then there can be no good or evil. There are just degrees of whatever a society finds acceptable at any given time, an unwritten set of rules that the majority of us observe. Evil, like good is a construct we use to describe the scale of things committed either for or against the societies laws. Those words are still used because the majority of our laws where written in a time when religion was far more important than it is today and was made with those standards in mind.

The apologist answer to your daughter's question would be something along the lines of
"God wants us to believe him based on faith alone, and if we had hard evidence of his existence, then we'd be believing in him based on evidence, not faith".
To which I would say that cuts out any possibility of people like Aron or I, who need evidence before we believe something is true and accurate. You can only make an informed decision if you have all of the info. You cannot make an informed decision to worship God and accept them unless you know if they actually exist. Of course, even if I knew for a fact that the Christian God existed, I would never worship him. I don't think I could ever worship something so evil.

as a child I remember how it was all about love and god being interchangeable. then one day the REST of the bible became the topic of conversation and I was horrified to see how much anger and hatred and fear there was...that I had taken that fear into myself which to this day I struggle with even as I hear and see what is true now...how ingrained those horrible things are in my mind. as a woman just how belittled I was and how I fought that internally for so long. There is nothing good about that book or its teachings. Lets not even get into who actually wrote it and who decided what should go into it. I am sad for every person raised under its evil spells...

@L M - No doubt what You just posted is Your own Research. You have Read The Bile Multiple Times, and done Your own Research. But isn't it an Amazing Coincidence that This is identical Word for Word to something Dan Barker wrote on The Freedom From religion Foundation Site?
      ffrf.org/publications/freethought-today/item/26141-the-10-worst-old-testament-verses
Lets not try to Lie here, all You did was copy and paste this from a Source that is Clearly Biased and not Really Reliable.
Worse still, it uses that Evil Bible Tactic of swapping Translations to gain the Maximum effect.
Nothing in this List is actually a Fair or Accurate Reading of The Bible, of Course, for example, Number 6 says a godly Priest Killed of a Mixed Race Couple to Keep God's People Pure, which is not what actually occurs in Numbers 25. Dan Barker simply Lied. A Fact You would Know if You'd read Numbers 25.
Then again You should suspect something is off given all of the Quotations that are actually Stitch together. Ll those ... in this Article shows Barker Truncate the Text by Removing Huge Segments of it. Don't You find it odd that He'd Omit Huge sections of text to make a Point? Or had it ever Occurred to You that This is in fact a Dishonest tactic? Or does that even Matter?
Nothing on this List is Really True, and all f it has been addressed before by Christian Apologists. And every Answer an Apologist gives You is called Mental Gymnastics, a Mere Excuse to explain Away The Bibles Clear Evils.
Give it a Rest though, nothing on this List is actually True.
And yes I Know I didn't Address any of them, but Look at it from my Perspective. To address each point would take Multiple Posts. You aren't likely to read any of them, and will simply dismiss what I Say as an excuse. All of them have also already been Answered anyway. Its not like I need to do anything but post Links to its You also won't Read.
The Book Of Job, for example, has been discussed Numerous Times and yet You lot act as if no Christian has ever given any Answer to this Objection. But Really, its ridiculously Easy to Find Specifically Christians addressing this Objection from Atheists. It is also Easy to find Christina addressing the Book Of Job on their own, such as Chesterton's reflections on it made in The late 19th or early 20th Century. Which is Linked Below.
      www.chesterton.org/introduction-to-job/
Or this Link from a Catholic Site.
      www.catholic.com/magazine/print-edition/job
So, Honestly what as the Point?
You can even Find others, like this site which explains how The Book Of Job is Misunderstood. You will of course Mock Him for saying it is Misunderstood. But so be it, it doens't Change the Fact that You should expect everyone to be aware of this Already.
      blogs.timesofisrael.com/the-book-of-job-a-widely-misunderstood-book/
The same Problem exists with all of these Objections. Most of them are simply Lying about what The Bible says, such as 6, which makes The Bible Racist for Killing someone over a Mixed Race Marriage when the Real Situation was the Worship of foreign gods, not Racism, to The Book Of Job, an Atheist Whipping Boy that has been addressed so many Times now that it seems irrelevant to even Mention, and Yet You lot still do.
I mean Seriously, This List even posts Psalm 137; 9 and claims God is telling us o be Happy to Kill the Babies of those who won't let us worship our one god. That is Laughable. Psalm 137;9 is the Last Verse in a Short Psalm, You can Easily Read. In Reality, The Psalm is a Lament, where a Slave taken from Judah to Babylon is told by His Captors to Sing a Song for their amusement, and He says in the Psalm He is Sorrowful, and Misses is Homeland, and then tells His Captors that hat They did to pothers will one day Happen to them. It is not God telling Believers to be Happy about Killing the Babies of others. It is saying to Babylon that their Babies will be Killed just like they Killed others babies. It isn't even a Threat, it is a Dire Warning that what You dole out to Others has a way of coming back on You. Misrepresentation of this Verse happens often on Atheist Sites but only Proves the Objections are silly Nonsense.
I am sorry , but this List is a Joke. I am not gong to Pretend it has any Value whatsoever other than to Prove Atheists don't Think for Themselves and aren't' Rational or Objective Thinkers.
You'r just looking of ways to make Christians look Evil.
An yes I know, Christian don't Need You to make them look Evil, they do that themselves. We've all Heard that refrain before Too, and if it was True You'd not need to Copy and Paste Dan Barkers Lies about Christianity, Now would You?

John, you do know the whole canard about God not being able to beat Iron Chariots is a Lie, right? (And its God Cap G as its a name, Atheists these days are idiots) The passage in Judges is about Judah, not God. Judah beat the men of the Valley, but Judah could no beat the men of the Mountains because they had Chariots of Iron. The whole chapter is about Judah. Atheists who wave that verse from the KJV about as if it says God can't beat Iron Chariots are stupid.
And no, you can't just move the goal posts by asking why Judah couldn't beat them if God was in his side, because the talking point is that God himself couldn't beat the Iron Chariots and that talking point is still objectively wrong.
There is no passage in the entire Bible that says God can't beat Iron CHariots.

SK Wills And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. (Judges 1:19)
That verse is CLEARLY about the lord ( as the subject matter) having problems with iron chariots not Judah , nice try though.
Even if your claim was true that's equally bad because having god by your side is obviously worthless but you keep believing your fairy tale.
