I was telling my 19 yo (who we made sure he was not exposed to religion until he had critical thinking skills) about the left behind series I was forced to watch at church as a child, and how it traumatized me. I have been an atheist since I was 16 though, due to all the conflicting views and nonsense in religion.
I've always contended that if there was a God that wanted a relationship with us, there would be no atheist, no requirement to believe. We would all agree that is a God, and the God would know how to get us all to see it.

2:30 A whole lot of the confusion centers around ambiguity in language. I try to be precise and differentiate "to believe" from "to know" in order to reduce that ambiguity. We can go through life basing our understanding of the universe on "beliefs", which are accepted on faith in the absence of material evidence. Or we can go through life basing our understanding of the universe on "knowledge", information derived through disciplined processes for analyzing material evidence. (I need a few more sentences to cover all the finer points but you all get the idea.) Belief does not equal knowledge. To "know" something doesn't depend on an impossible 100% standard of proof. That is effectively impossible to achieve in the face of the complexity of Nature. But a strong preponderance of the evidence suffices. And yes, should new and significant contradictory evidence come to light, our knowledge will change. Humans are not all-knowing gods. Believing something, though, requires absolutely no evidence at all, if you choose to take it on faith. I could say, for example, that I _believe_ I have an eternal soul. But I can much more confidently say that I _know_ I have two feet. It's simply a question of the strength of the evidence. Lastly, there's the issue of accepting the knowledge of others. We pursue knowledge as a society, not just individually. I'm not an astrophysicist. I can't say that I personally understand the Big Bang theory. But I accept it (not believe it) as true based on knowledge. It's just not my personal knowledge. It's the knowledge of the world's best experts in the field. Do I "believe" them? No. I _trust_ them, and with good reason. I can trust them because our society is built on trust. It's the efficient way to function. To support that we have developed all kinds of rules and laws penalizing people who abuse our trust. Professors or scientific researchers who falsify data, for example, can see their careers and incomes destroyed. So I don't have to "believe" in science or scientists. I can KNOW that my confidence in their expertise is justified. I've done a couple of short videos on this topic. It's a favorite of mine.

On my path in becoming an atheist by deep thinking, I started questioning religion, managed to break through the "religious thought fence" and got the necessary outside perspective by having similar thoughts: If there is a god, who sees anything you do and can have anything he wants anyways, he would judge you solely by your actions towards others and the environment. The desire to be worshipped is too petty for a being as high as god. So, religious services, praying and so on is completely pointless, but religious people think they can fool their god, I guess.

The first time, after starting formal schooling life, life made sense to me was when I asked my Mother; "Would God be happy about this [subject]?! - And she said "I don't know. I don't believe in God. - "[Excuse the dramatic re-enactment!] WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD? EVERY ADULT I HAVE EVER ASKED HAS A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. People born in "these countries" believe these old books and people born in "other countries" believe other old books.... And none of them have a grain of truth to them. 7:50 I think the idea that the idea that "my religion is the only truth" is more of a property of Abrahamic religions rather than universal religious view. I have heard this from world religion experts. Also, I know that when I have visited Buddhist and Hindu temples, each case they strongly discouraged me from turning my back on my own religious tradition. I am an atheist but they seam to always assume that I am Christion since we are in the US.

Theists have used the word "atheist" as a pejorative term for non-believers, just like the term "big bang" was originally meant to disparage the idea of the expansion of the universe from a singularity. Both have stuck.
I thought the first part was interesting... Personally, if someone asks me, or invites me to a religious event, I just say: "I'm not really interested; I don't believe in God." Or perhaps: "I don't go to church; I'm not a believer." (It seems like saying it that way gets the situation across accurately and concisely... without any questions about terms or definitions.) I would also have to say that, until quite recently, I never considered myself part of a group that specifically identified me as "an atheist". God was just one of the things I didn't believe in... like ghosts... and telepathy... And it never seemed to require a title or even much thought.
How did you make it past the first verse of the bible about God creating? Do tell how it happened on its own. The 1LofT states that energy can't be created or destroyed, it can't happen naturally. One aspect of the 2LofT shows that the universe is winding down, usable energy is becoming less usable. It is clear creation had to be done supernaturally at some point yet it is still denied because people are just too proud to accept that, among other things.

Cats can get used to other animals too, no problem. Lizards, even rats. They usually just need some time to get used to a newcomer, but they watch you interact with it and understand that it's not an intruder or prey, they are social enough. I hold a belief that you’re neither atheist nor theist when you’re born. You must first have the proposition presented to you prior to taking a negative position against said proposition. Atheism in particular, is a negative position against the theist concepts of god. You cannot be an atheist without first being presented with the proposition of the concept of god. Being neutral by ignorance is by definition a neutral position and does not equal a negative position by proxy.

I was telling my 19 yo (who we made sure he was not exposed to religion until he had critical thinking skills) about the left behind series I was forced to watch at church as a child, and how it traumatized me. I have been an atheist since I was 16 though, due to all the conflicting views and nonsense in religion.
I always wondered why conservatives seem to hate Hollywood so much, I guess this explains a lot!
I've always contended that if there was a God that wanted a relationship with us, there would be no atheist, no requirement to believe. We would all agree that is a God, and the God would know how to get us all to see it.
Instead, the solution was to kill all non-believers.

2:30 A whole lot of the confusion centers around ambiguity in language. I try to be precise and differentiate "to believe" from "to know" in order to reduce that ambiguity. We can go through life basing our understanding of the universe on "beliefs", which are accepted on faith in the absence of material evidence. Or we can go through life basing our understanding of the universe on "knowledge", information derived through disciplined processes for analyzing material evidence. (I need a few more sentences to cover all the finer points but you all get the idea.)
Belief does not equal knowledge.
To "know" something doesn't depend on an impossible 100% standard of proof. That is effectively impossible to achieve in the face of the complexity of Nature. But a strong preponderance of the evidence suffices. And yes, should new and significant contradictory evidence come to light, our knowledge will change. Humans are not all-knowing gods.
Believing something, though, requires absolutely no evidence at all, if you choose to take it on faith. I could say, for example, that I _believe_ I have an eternal soul. But I can much more confidently say that I _know_ I have two feet. It's simply a question of the strength of the evidence.
Lastly, there's the issue of accepting the knowledge of others. We pursue knowledge as a society, not just individually. I'm not an astrophysicist. I can't say that I personally understand the Big Bang theory. But I accept it (not believe it) as true based on knowledge. It's just not my personal knowledge. It's the knowledge of the world's best experts in the field. Do I "believe" them? No. I _trust_ them, and with good reason. I can trust them because our society is built on trust. It's the efficient way to function. To support that we have developed all kinds of rules and laws penalizing people who abuse our trust. Professors or scientific researchers who falsify data, for example, can see their careers and incomes destroyed. So I don't have to "believe" in science or scientists. I can KNOW that my confidence in their expertise is justified.

On my path in becoming an atheist by deep thinking, I started questioning religion, managed to break through the "religious thought fence" and got the necessary outside perspective by having similar thoughts: If there is a god, who sees anything you do and can have anything he wants anyways, he would judge you solely by your actions towards others and the environment. The desire to be worshipped is too petty for a being as high as god. So, religious services, praying and so on is completely pointless, but religious people think they can fool their god, I guess.

5:24 - I feel like this has already described my position at this point. I grew up In the UK where religion is very much a part of education. At 3/4 years old I "laughed" at the thought of Jonah being swallowed by the Whale and surviving was a "true" story - my teachers told me Off; "Of course it's true!" - BUT HOW?! THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE?! "Because the bible is the oldest book in the world and everything contained in it is the truth" Through my constant questioning they told me "everybody" (which I took to mean every adult because I knew it didn't include me) spoke to and received messages from God daily?! The first time, after starting formal schooling life, life made sense to me was when I asked my Mother; "Would God be happy about this [subject]?! - And she said "I don't know. 7:50 I think the idea that the idea that "my religion is the only truth" is more of a property of Abrahamic religions rather than universal religious view. I have heard this from world religion experts. Also, I know that when I have visited Buddhist and Hindu temples, each case they strongly discouraged me from turning my back on my own religious tradition. I am an atheist but they seam to always assume that I am Christion since we are in the US.
I mean, I would actually love to see a discussion between TJ Kirk and Aron Ra. I would actually like to see where it would end up. TJ is just loud. But his evolution is what kept me watching. Aron keeps me sane when I hear crazies. I listen to his talks often.

Theists have used the word "atheist" as a pejorative term for non-believers, just like the term "big bang" was originally meant to disparage the idea of the expansion of the universe from a singularity. Both have stuck.

Personally, if someone asks me, or invites me to a religious event, I just say: "I'm not really interested; I don't believe in God."
Or perhaps: "I don't go to church; I'm not a believer."
(It seems like saying it that way gets the situation across accurately and concisely... without any questions about terms or definitions.)
I would also have to say that, until quite recently, I never considered myself part of a group that specifically identified me as "an atheist".
God was just one of the things I didn't believe in... like ghosts... and telepathy...
And it never seemed to require a title or even much thought.

The 1LofT states that energy can't be created or destroyed, it can't happen naturally. One aspect of the 2LofT shows that the universe is winding down, usable energy is becoming less usable. It is clear creation had to be done supernaturally at some point yet it is still denied because people are just too proud to accept that, among other things.

Third... you are attempting to "do a special pleading". *I* assume that "the universe appeared or existed first"; *YOU* assume that your God existed first... If your God has always existed then perhaps the universe has always existed; if your God came into existence by magic then perhaps the universe came into existence by magic. Specifically, even if magic is real, and the universe did come into existence by supernatural means, we still have no reason whatsoever to assume that any god, let alone your particular God, was involved in the process. Perhaps the random appearance of universes is the inevitable result of magic. (Since we have never seen magic demonstrated, and obviously have no idea of how it might work, we have no particular reason to assume that not to be true...)
I personally tend to consider "the big bang" to be the most plausible theory put forward so far but, since neither I nor anyone else was there to witness "the beginning", I'm willing to admit that I don't really know. Perhaps, since neither you, nor any other human being, was there to witness God creating the universe, and no current evidence of his existence seems to be available at all, perhaps you should admit that you don't "know" either.

Cats can get used to other animals too, no problem. Lizards, even rats. They usually just need some time to get used to a newcomer, but they watch you interact with it and understand that it's not an intruder or prey, they are social enough. (Of course I can't dismiss the possibility that some cats out there might be complete psychos, but that has not been my experience.)

If you are asked what God atheists believe in, there is no answer - atheists have no God-belief - it is not-belief.
The "all Gods are the same" is the belief of Unitarian Universalists. Some UU even believe that the universe itself counts, so even atheists are accepted, because atheists believe in reality.

Then I'd talk a bit about what I see as the primary difference between theists and atheists, that the former are prepared to base their understanding of human nature and the universe on information gained primarily through some specific texts, accepted on faith, without a substantial basis on material evidence. The latter on the other hand cannot believe this way. Atheists require evidence derived from material reality on which to base their understanding of human nature and the nature of the universe.
Last point - "Friends, I've heard too many apologists give highly inaccurate characterizations of atheists. This is all I ask of you. Please do not feel you know and understand how atheists think, what they believe and what they don't believe, until you have actually had some lengthy conversations with them, conversations in which you mostly ask questions, and then in which you listen very closely to their answers, with a sincere desire to understand them as they understand themselves."

I will give a simile, we have particles in a volume, we have also a word for the lack of articles in a volume, vacuum, atheism is the vacuum of gods, not even a vacuum of religion or of supernatural events like souls or ghosts. I hold a belief that you’re neither atheist nor theist when you’re born. You must first have the proposition presented to you prior to taking a negative position against said proposition. Atheism in particular, is a negative position against the theist concepts of god. You cannot be an atheist without first being presented with the proposition of the concept of god. Being neutral by ignorance is by definition a neutral position and does not equal a negative position by proxy.
