- Journalist, author and war correspondent Chris Hedges spoke at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY on November 10, 2017 on fascism and empire in the age of Trump.

Chris Hedges is the best-selling author of War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (2003), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. A quote from the book was used as the opening title quotation in the critically-acclaimed and Academy Award-winning 2009 film, The Hurt Locker. The quote reads: "The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug."
Hedges, whose column is published Mondays on Truthdig, has written twelve books, including the New York Times bestseller Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (2012), which he co-authored with the cartoonist Joe Sacco. Some of his other books include Unspeakable (2016), Wages of Rebellion: The Moral Imperative to Revolt (2015), Death of the Liberal Class (2010), Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle (2009), I Don’t Believe in Atheists (2008) and the best selling American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America (2008). In 2011, Nation Books published a collection of Hedges’ Truthdig columns called The World As It Is: Dispatches on the Myth of Human Progress.
Hedges previously spent nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent in Central America, the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. He has reported from more than 50 countries and has worked for The Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio, The Dallas Morning News and The New York Times, for which he was a foreign correspondent for 15 years.
Hedges was part of the team of reporters at The New York Times awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for the paper’s coverage of global terrorism. He also received the Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism in 2002. The Los Angeles Press Club honored Hedges’ original columns in Truthdig by naming the author the Online Journalist of the Year in 2009 and again in 2011. The LAPC also granted him the Best Online Column award in 2010 for his Truthdig essay “One Day We’ll All Be Terrorists.”
Hedges is a senior fellow at The Nation Institute in New York City. He has taught at Columbia University, New York University, Princeton University and The University of Toronto. He currently teaches prisoners at a maximum-security prison in New Jersey.

I really feel for Chris Hedges on a personal level. I wish every American could hear Chris Hedges' explanation of what our country is doing to itself and the world. I'll share his words with everyone I know! My wife is a pastor, and I will get her to share them with her congregation and denomination.
His time in the Middle East and many other places has obviously engrained in him an empathy for the most vulnerable populations which most Americans will never feel. So I see now that every day I don't do something, I am also complicit in being part of the problem. Thanks Chris. I will do better. I will do my part to try to create change.

I would bet real data on the relentless drastic reduction of Arctic sea ice, destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, increasing frequency and severity of forest fires and weather disasters, and other very real examples of rapidly worsening climate change, are not covered. Neither are the ever-widening wealth gap, the record debt levels of both individuals and corporations, the decimation of the middle class in the U.S., and other very real examples of how an uncaring ruling class (the 1%) has totally abandoned the vast majority of ordinary citizens (the 99%). Sorry, but that's the way it is with eyes fully open.

He should not be a civic leader. He's misleading and destroying faith in institutions that are not obsolete or too weak to rejuvenate our country.
Orwell gave a vision of where democracy can go if it's not tended too, he did not falsely state the United States was 10 years from being Oceania.

As a senior person who is unable to retire, ever, without family or community to lean on, I feel acutely the abandonment by my culture…and I’m still aware that I’m one of the luckier people on this planet. I’m not fleeing bombs and immediate starvation. My mother could live on her social security…but my $1500 a month barely covers my rent.
I feel so disillusioned about the world my children are inheriting, and by my own naivety in believing that our country was moving towards justice and equality, while it was doing the opposite. I only wish that I could find the energy and time to get more involved in social change movements, especially now, when it looks like we’re catapulting towards a Trump dictatorship, and what Biden offers is only marginally better. I’m so angry at the system which has failed most people, other than the wealthy.

I recently saw a report on how the prison systems in this country are monetizing every facet of incarceration, and it sickened me. They charge exorbitant rates by the minute for phone calls to and from inmates. They no longer allow face to face visitation but rather use video conferencing, which they also charge for. When a family member wants to put money into an inmates account for use in the prison commissary they are charged a percentage as a service fee. The poorest and most vulnerable people are being shaken down by the wealthiest with the blessing of Congress. It really is a modern version of slavery. How much further can people at the bottom of this insane socioeconomic hierarchy be repressed and taken advantage of? Could the deck be any more stacked against their success? And from what Chris Hedges has just told me, if I only write these words and DO nothing, then I too am complicit. So the next step is figuring out where and how I can best make a difference with the time I have and going for it.

The twisted of what is good is bad and right is wrong and up is down. However out of this has been seen and it would not have been seen if we didn't have President Trump to show us the hypocrisy and enslavement of our people and the need to spread our love to our people everywhere even if its not safe because if we don't give our love to the ones that are lost and in despair we will lose this and I'm seeing the conversation begin and the outreach of our people wanting to help each other and Thats the unity that makes us stronger and gives us the strength to prevail and forgiveness is what we work towards everyday and to not give up especially in the face of oppression and suppression of our own people.
