jeff here is such a beast... way beyond my current level of playing, but seeing someone as skilled and tasteful as him inspires me to work harder to try to be able to play like him. i get that when i listen to some of the really crazy players, not because i want to surpass anyone but i want to get to that level and be able to come up with and play the kind of things like jeff here. guys like him inspire me to try to push myself to get better.

Clearly Jeff has studied a lot of Paul Gilbert´s instructional videos. I think that if you´re over 40 and a hard rock/metal player, hardly you have not studied those videos at some point in your practice, they where very popular in the guitar community in th 90´s. Petrucci´s instructional video was also very good for helping to develop picking speed.
Agreed. I’ve been watching a lot of Al Joseph’s instructional videos on TH-cam and he seems to coalesce all that stuff in a way that makes sense to me. I don’t know, it’s like one of those “when the student is ready, the master will appear” kind of things.

@solidranger Its because 7 strings are just one extra low string. You can tune all six strings the same as his, you'll just be short one string. @BizirogluSiker I tune my Les Paul down to drop A all the time and I just have standard strings and I think it sounds and feels just as great as if it were in drop D, or standard tuning. I think a lot of people just don't like the feel>.
The L.A. Notes the problem is you don't have the proper tension with thinner strings and a shorter scale length, so when you hit the note it goes in and out of pitch, which sounds terrible. Thicker strings and longer scale length keep the notes tighter and allows you to play cleaner, it just sounds better.
Hi this is Jeff Loomis, ok the first thing I do is have 13 and 1/2 inch long fingers and this way I can stretch my hands 3.7 feet across the fretboard, bigger then your normal sized guitar,so if you are a 6 string player with a standard guitar good luck to you,but sorry, you will never shred like me because I am a Viking Guitar God with fingers the length of your entire arm.
