Dubai's High-Tech Farming Is Not What You Think
When most people think of places where food is grown, the first region that doesn't spring to mind is a scorching, arid desert. However, megacities such as Dubai have shown that it is possible to cultivate food even in difficult environments. Whether it be flavorful tomatoes produced on forward-thinking farms that only use a quarter of the amount of water that conventional farms do. Or quinoa, which can even be grown in the midst of the desert. Or even the construction of an entirely green metropolis from the ground up. Dubai is making massive strides toward a future in which it will be able to provide their own populations of millions of people with food that is both fresh and locally farmed.
The answer is simple; in addition to having some of the most stunning skylines, the capital also has some of the most brilliant brains in the world. Technology has been ruling the world, and it does not come as a surprise at all that it is soon going to take over farming as well. And thanks to creative thinkers and cutting-edge tech, businesses in Dubai are discovering new methods to cultivate locally-sourced vegetables.
And to promote this Dubai has also launched the Food Tech Valley, a new project aimed at tripling UAE's food production and positioning it as a global destination for the industry. It is one of the world’s first dedicated AgTech cities. The 18 million square foot precinct is a showcase for high-tech, sustainable agriculture, including vertical farming, cellular agriculture, and hydroponics. It is located in the Warsan area of the city. and is built to help boost the United Arab Emirates' exports of fresh produce to regional markets. The city will also produce over 300 varieties of crops using modern farming techniques and the latest agri-tech, which includes vertical farming, hydroponic farming and greening the desert.
The term "vertical farming" refers to a kind of agriculture in which crops are cultivated stacked above one another, as opposed to being produced in the more conventional horizontal rows. Growing crops vertically allows for the saving of space, which, in turn, leads to a greater crop yield for each square foot of ground that is used.
In Dubai, Badia Farms was the pioneer in establishing a vertical farm and was the first business of its kind to do so. The technology that is used in the 8,500 square foot warehouse cultivates popular microgreens and herbs for usage in local restaurants. The goal of initiatives like Badia Farms is to bridge the gap between the farm and the table while also promoting Dubai as a leading producer of fruits and vegetables across the world.
Dubai Industrial City is home to Badia Farms’ new large-scale high-tech vertical farm. In addition, Emirates Flight Catering (EKFC) and Crop One, a US based most successful vertical farm operator in the world. are jointly spending $40 million to construct the biggest vertical farming facility in the world at Dubai World Central, which is located in close proximity to Al Maktoum International Airport.
