  • You'll be seeing more and more high tech farms popping up in cities.
    As the population grows, and we run out of farming land, along with climate change, the future of farming is to bring them into our cities. Creating high tech vertical farms that use aeroponics or hydroponics.
    From an underground farm in London, to a Japanese office building with a rice paddy field. Across the world people and companies are investing in creating new ways and technology to provide a more sustainable future.
    Big name investors include Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Leonardo DiCaprio, and even the former McDonalds CEO Don Thompson. All pushing the technology of farming and agriculture forward.
    Companies highlighted in this video include: AeroFarms, Growing Underground, Square Roots (who have Kimbal Musk, brother of Elon Musk, as a co-founder), the Open Agriculture Initiative, Persona Group, Farm One, Bowery, Plenty, Impossible Foods, and Beyond Meat.

    I have been in artificial farm in Lithuania six years ago. In winter. Around -15°C that day, in farm was around +20°C. It was aquaponic farm (where fishes are grown in the water tanks and that water is supplied for plants. That way you grow fish and plants at the same time) and the farm itself was on top of the building, like a greenhouse. Amazing experience to see plants growing in the middle of the winter. Trully this is sustainable future every city must have.

      @who8myfish These indoor farms are more efficient, but the sun's light is cheaper. There isn't much of a way of these competing with farms during harvest times. Those will have huge batches of low cost crops flooding the stores. But they can produce year round. They can also produce crops that cannot be grown locally. Trying to find the right times to produce and the right crops to produce is going to be hugely important.

      Well, it uses a ton of electricity and it's actually very expensive. That's why they're only using it on luxurious greens. You need to solve energy issues first before it get's popular. For now electricity isn't abundant nor clean. Even then, it'll be only used on some plants, because many are perfectly ok in the ground.
      The fun part is that you're able to do DIY that right now. You just need a pipe, a drill and a pump.

      Due to the extreme cost of restate in cities compared to rural land prices this will never economically viable and, even if we ignore that to grow enough food to feed a city you would literally need to turn every square foot of space in every building into growing space and move the people somewhere else and that will still won't even be enough to feed a quarter of those people. It takes a full acre of land to feed a single person, far more space than is needed for that same person to live and work.

    It’s a really nice idea and I am sure it would solve many issues. What I’m worried about now is, when you cultivate in an open area only certain crops can be cultivated in a particular season. It is exactly those crops that are needed by the people to survive that phase of the year. Say for instance you get watery fruits like melons in summer and starchy veggies like pumpkin in winter. This tech enables us to cultivate whatever we want whenever we want sooner or later. This flexibility is both a boon and a curse. It might mess up the type of food that we need to eat during particular season. We just need to be cautious on that regard.

    Notice how most of the food grown in these systems are leafy greens. It is not very productive for high demand crops like wheat, corn, rice, sugarcane, legumes (lentils, peas, chickpeas, soy, beans, peanuts, alfalfa, etc), tomatoes, potatoes, mustard, eggplant, etc.
    Hence, aside from the market of high priced leafy greens for salads, I do not see how this is a replacement to conventional agriculture.
    PS. I am not saying that it can't be done, but the hype that this is the replacement to agriculture is baseless. To do a vertical system with corn, for example, would require a soil setup as they grow poorly in aeroponics or hydroponics, and would required levels placed 10ft above each other. It would be ridiculous to suggest such a setup.

      If we can scale it up the prices should come down to run a system like this. Although yes some crops will not do well in these types of farms. I think it is vital for human survival to build more of these farms to sustain ourselves. The more we cut down forest to make room for farms. The more we throw the earth away from its equilibrium. We have to fight hard to protect more ecosystems.

      I don't agree on tomatoes, they are already grown in similar conditions in glasshouses, often illumined at night.
      True, I guess we need new species of quite a lot of crops, they need to be way shorter, I mean straw isn't really useful in vertical farming, and wheat with 5cm straw would probably grow faster.

      I think we should see this more as a way to not farm these leafy greens outdoors and focus the land there onto other products. This way we could still produce more food feeding more humans.

    While this is not practical for the masses at the moment (as MANY are saying), this does prove that we can indeed grow more in less space, it is indeed more space efficient, and while most crops like corn and wheat cant be grown in this fashion, the idea that we can create these simulated environments shows that we are not so doomed to starvation as world population grows. We cannot grow everything, YET! Eventually, like we did for greens, we will figure out how to do it more efficiently.

      @danielleivy8180 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this comment is late, but my guess is that they're going for $$$$$. Leafy greens grow much faster and that equals more yield per year. They also take up less space than something like corn, so you'll get a higher saturation per square footage. It's all a business decision. I'm happy they're doing it, but I agree with you that we need diversity in crops grown. I'm working on lowering the cost of running these types of facilities so we can look past $$$$ and what people holistically need from these farms. The future looks amazing.

      @who8myfish It is a problem that exist, just not a major problem right now. More people means more crops are needed. More crops requires more space for farmland. Finding good farmland need to cut down trees. It also may need to be further away, needing longer shipping and a possibility of more dead crops. Droughts, parasites, natural disasters, etc., can all wipe out large areas of cropland, such as what has happened to the large corn fields in Iowa. And some crops can only be farmed in certain specific areas, too far away from areas that could use them.
      The biggest problem with this approach will be earning money to support it. Farms are already at the size to produce huge amounts of cheap crops. Vertical farms don't have the size to compete yet. Plus initial investments just to get started are huge. You need buildings, lots of electricity, lots of water, and a huge amount of tech installed before the first produce can even be grown.

      Nope!

    • @OwnerOfOwn
      @OwnerOfOwn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@TheTrueMorningStar I like your skepticism, it's crucial for growth. I agree this is not going to solve shortages, because those shortages are largely from starving people not being able to afford food. But the "acre per 1 person" doesn't apply here, because say that acre can grow 120 days out of the year, indoor farms can grow 365, and because of the advances in lighting and hydroponics, yields are drastically increased over soil farming think 4-10x depending on the crop, an acre of indoor farm is going to be able to feed 6-18 people. We are going to need a huge non-for-profit company to get food in the hands of impoverished and developing nations.

@James Smith You're misinterpreting his argument. Hydroponics/aeroponics doesn't work on large crops due to a lack of load-bearing capacity/root supporting capability. It's a major engineering issue that's existed since the inception of the field.
      There are lots of crops (tomatoes, wheat, or corn for instance) that we simply aren't able to grow using these systems yet.

    • @Ibarakify
      @Ibarakify 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @James Smith No, his statement has nothing to do with denialism. It's merely an observation that hydroponics and aeroponics has gone absolutely nowhere in this category and a massive drawback (tall crops) has largely gone unresolved in this specialization for thirty years.
      Rising sea-levels, desertification, and soil depletion are absolutely irrelevant to what amounts to an engineering issue in a highly specific subset of botany. They're not even relevant to the OP's observation.

      What i ment was that the challenge of vertical farming isn't giving much results ,the goal of vertical farming isn't just to reduce the problem of lake of farmlands but to reduce the amount of water wasted ,irrigation is good but it can't be applied to all foods ,the second problem is climat ,im from algeria (biggest country in africa) and yet it hard to find big farmlands with enough minerals ,and it's too hot for plants to grow anyway ,with vertical farming we could control the temperature,humidity,water usage....hopefully vertical farming will reach the level of being able to plant wheat,crops...instead of just lettuce and similar greens

      The electric bill is actually not that bad. If you did something like this in, for example, your basement, you could easily spend less on electricity than you would have to pay at the store for the same amount of produce but you get much healthier produce. Now if you tried this with renewable resources such as solar and wind then you could just get nearly free food that's much better than anything you could by at most stores.

      Australian wheat industry claims $$millions lost since Moratorium on GM crops in 2004.
      Kangaroo Island said NO because they only place in SA that grows NON GM Canola to Japan.
      The fires have been allowed to burn so Government can force farmers into robotic 5G run Ai GM "smart grid" city farming.
      The Climate in Australia was "changed" by Government selling water out of natural river systems to private dams and causing all natural springs and aquifers to dry up.

    Growing leafy greens vertically is definitely interesting. While I think leafy greens is the only thing that can profitably be grown in this way it definitely will have a place in the future. The main challenge for vertical farming right now is that it is energy intensive to grow crops in doors utilizing mainly LED light fixtures. As they become more efficient I’m sure it will become more prevalent to use lighting in this way. There is no way to replicate this type of system for growing field crops. The industry is definitely changing to more greenhouse production for specialty crops, technology has come a long way, it will be interesting to see how this develops.

      Money can be and is printed, created out of thin air ! When a country really wants to solve a problem they just don't care about money, and we shouldn't either when evaluating solutions ! Look at what countries have benne able to produce when switching to a war economy, everyone in the country producing things for one and only one goal : defend the country and feed the troops. The limiting factor was never money, money can be printed, created out of thin air !
      The only thing limiting te production of a country is the energy available (manpower + machine power) and the quantity of ressources available to be transformed, whatever the type of economy (liberalist capitalism, communism, war economy... whatever).
