2005 Chevy Tahoe lifter ticking/noisy 2wd |FIXED

  • In this video we address a failing oil pickup tube O-ring that is occurring in my wife's Tahoe. This is a common problem amongst many LS powered vehicles, and it is something that can be fixed at home in the garage for cheap. The Failing O-ring causes air in the system, and the valvetrain will usually be noisy, or one or two lifters will actually begin to "tick".

    Brother. You saved me a TON of money. I replaced my oil pan gasket about 6 months ago. Every since then I’ve had that Chevy tick! But it’s been sporadic and not constant. Had already ordered a lifter kit and was fully prepared to dig in and pull the heads off and do a full blown lifter replacement and having my heads resurfaced while I was at it. Just happened to stumble across this video and I wish I could upload a pic of my o-ring. Apparently we moved the pickup tube when replacing the oil pan gasket and it caused the o-ring to pinch and split. Thank you so much for this video. THIS is what TH-cam is for! 💪🏼

      You can tell the oil pressure is low when you turn on the engine, another sign that either the oil pres sensor or the o ring of the pick up tube need replacement, or both, in addition to the ticking noise. Well done!

    My 2005 Yukon 4.8 started ticking about 3 months ago after 180,000 miles. After 5 miles the ticking would start but then it would stop after about 15 miles. Ticking would be loud sometimes and was driving me crazy. Found this video and decided I would do this. I found the o-ring on the pickup tube crushed on one side. When I started to remove it and the o-ring just split. Put the new o-ring on the pickup tube and new gasket on the oil pan. After everything was put back together I took it for a ride. There was no ticking. After 1 month, I still haven't heard the ticking. Thanks for the video, it helped so much.

    I did this over the summer.
    Dropped the pan
    Removed P/U tube
    Cleaned tube out (brake parts cleaner)
    Cleaned oil pan out completely
    New O ring, filter and felpro gasket.
    Oil pressure IMMEDIATELY up over 50#
    Then over 40 during idle.
    I'm so glad I did it

    I have never commented on anything, but I've had a lifter tick for over a year that came and went , I saw this post/vid, did the repair and the tick is gone and engine sounds smother that ever.... Such a simple repair that resulted in a major improvement. This should be the first thing done before pulling out the big bucks for replacing anything and everything.
    Thank You!!!

    Not a mechanic, but a tech tip I picked up was to jack up from the rear diff enough to visibly tilt the truck a couple inches from the rear. If the tick stops usually a bad o ring on the pick up. So far has been on the money.

    I can confirm, had the tick initially, it got worse after sometime where it sounded more like tapping, it'd come and go randomly, I ended up using thicker oil as a remedy, lowered the tapping but it definitely was there. eventually, I got a check engine light after 6-8 months of on and off with the tapping, turned out to be my oil pressure, replaced the O ring + gasket, and that fixed the entire thing.

    Hey my experience with the LS pick up tube fix is that the factory only put one bolt in the pick up tube to oil pump even tho it has 2 holes which is what eventually causes failure/lifter tick from oil starvation over time. They make a small bracket that allows you to bolt both sides of the pick up tube down to prevent that failure in the future

Now that it has a new one, every morning or every time the engine cools down when starting, the lifters or horses make a noise and after a few seconds it comes loose, do you think it's because of that ring gasket??? thank you

  • @ProjectCarTV
    @ProjectCarTV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I always make sure to do a full under carriage wash at a hand car wash before doing this type of work. Also make sure the block surface is clean and dry and surrounding areas with brake parts cleaner. Nothing sucks worse than being on your back installing a pan and just when you're about to put it in place you hit a dirty/oil spot on the dab of gasket sealant and have to wiggle out from under and prep it again.
    Permatex Black - Right Stuff - is Awesome!
    Another thing that can cause tick with hydraulic lash adjusters is pouring in "Engine Restore" - that blue stuff with gold flake for loss of compression. It doesn't harden, but is similar to a fine grit sand. It gunks up HLA'S and gives a false sense of security for worn piston rings. Snake Oil at its Finest!

    Interesting design flaw. Engineers had to expect that oil seals like that would leak with age. I wonder if it would have worked better if the seal were in a position that is normally below the oil level of the pan. Then air wouldn't get in and reduce the efficiency of the pump at every startup.

    My oil guage is pegged out on my 04 silverado 4x4 so I assumed that the guage was faulty and not reading correctly.got the truck with 220,000 miles.has TIS rims with 33's.it ran like a charm the day I got it but in 3 mos I had to do a remanned 4l60e.ive had this same intermitten tick that ive been chasing and a P0300. I did MAF sensor,crank position sensor, and next will be coil packs and plugs...i got the truck at a good price even with adding a transmission but that tick is bothering the hell out of me.some days dont do it at all....also somtimes I can be going down the road and all the dash warning lights will come on.then go off after 10 or so seconds.kind of aggravating as well!!

    I've been searching on youtube for awhile to confirm my suspicions about that rubber seal that goes bad..I have this same issue..you can shut the motor off and restart it 5 or 6 times..it will go way until you let the oil pressure drop Below 40psi for 30 seconds. I am glad I found this video...so one question..did this fix the problem?

    @dick hamm So replacing the o-ring on the pick up tube is what fixed the ticking? I actually own an 05 tahoe 2wd w/ the 4.8 only difference is my ticking is constant. Thought I would need to replace the lifter itself and possibly other engine components. Would like to know what you think. Would also love saving the money if that all it is?

    Great video man, my 6.0 has been ticking too but the oil pressure reads just fine. Only thing is that it jumps around at idle, normally around 40 to 45 psi. As soon as I accelerate though, it goes up to 70 and holds steady. Do you think this could be because of that gasket?

      dirty lifters will tick as well. Something you can do that won't hurt is run 6 Oz. of seafoam in your crankcase for 50 miles and change your oil, use a full synthetic as it will have better cleaning action than conventional. Also use a good filter that has a backflow preventer, purolator one or purolator boss filters have this, there are others, but I use purolator. My oil of choice is penzoil platinum full synthetic 5w-30.

    • @DickHamm
      @DickHamm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've seen both, it really can be intermittent. This one specifically would be pretty loud, and sometimes not go away, especially when hot. Then other days we would drive the thing all around town and it was moderately "noisy" in the valvetrain but not a specific ticking as with the other times. Yours could be O-ring related, oil related depending on location and weather, or maybe even a combo of the 2 in my opinion!
