  • This video will help you determine if you have a cam, lifter or both that is coming apart. This is so common on ls engines. Like the 5.7 hemi the cam or lifter begins to spall and they wipe out each other. This will help you understand the process to diagnose and fix this problem. Good luck!

    Had this noise on my LM7 04 5.3, lobe and lifters were fine, noise was intake valve seat recession, replaced heads and job done

    shouldn't oil be coming from the push rods over the rockers for lubrication? Didn't see a drop come out while you were running it.

      Good point. I would say yes. New lifters pumped right up. I saw this too after I posted. Good find.

      This usually starts after the oil warms up completely or at slightly higher rpm than idle. Pre-load on the lifter also affects this, on my Pontiac engines I adjust for 'zero lash' with the engine running at idle with poly locks- this really wakes those engines up and oil flow seems to increase through the pushrod.

    My 2004 5.3 Silverado developed this noise around 60,000 miles with constant oil changes (2500 miles) with mobil 1 oil and filling the oil filter to prevent dry startup.
    Wondering if mobile 1 is garbage, lifter/cam not good quality or oiling issue in the block.

      'The noise' could be anything
      The noise is the 'Effect'.
      Fix the 'Cause' otherwise the Effect will Re-occur ..
      In this video, there didn't appear to be a drop of oil coming out of the push rods with engine running. Also seems like plastic roller guide keepers were not checked for wear that allows Rollers to wobble on the cam instead of running true (like a bad wheel alignment).

      o ring on the pick up tube and sump in the oil pan goes bad from cavitation where they drilled the tube intake cover before it gets to the pump gears and they changed drill type and direction, that hard 90º needs fixing with a grinder to smooth the flow instead of cavitation. oil pressure below 40psi on the gauge should tell you at any time.
      gm faulty design, but they changed the oil pump 2014+ series, idk when, but the new oil pump is very pressure sensitive in how it self adjusts really neat way to demand responses of the engine from high rpm to low rpm shifts. be nicer to your vehicle with smoother shift speeds not 5k rpm down to 2+k rpm

    Mine has a noise like forged piston slap with a very minor squeek... the noise sometimes comes and goes which is very strange and my oil pressure sometimes drops below 15psi when you're idling but at 2000 RPM comes right back up to 45...

  • @kevwills858
    @kevwills858 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Did you check Oil pump/pressure with an independent guahe ? There wasn't a drop of oil coming out of those Push rods it seemed.
    Also did you check the Plastic Roller Guides for wear ? They are crucial(and fail) to keep those Rollers running straight (not wobbling) on the Cam Lobes ..
    Otherwise, this could all happen again .. quicker next time.

    • @kevwills858
      @kevwills858 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      PS Never assume new Cheap plastic Roller guides are any better than the old worn original ones ... they are sometimes worse and must also be checked for wobble..

    From what I've heard, the lifter trays are responsible for keeping the lifter roller inline with the cam. They wear and the roller starts to oscillate causing cam wear. One mode of failure.

    i am at this stage with a 2013 AFM DOD lt silverado and just found the #4 intake lifter collapsed and inspected the cam and saw 'spalling' on it the lifter roller itself is just collapsed solid with the beginning of drag spalling on the roller so 123k miles but at 100k i was getting random 1-3 times a year stabil track auto disabling and had no idea why. when you get stabil track and traction control disabling, your about to lose oil pressure within 10-300 miles.
    i had a 2000 silverado also that had lifter noise on warm up, now i know why the original owner took it to the dealership and traded it in, i bet he took it to service first and heard the price tag on the repair and just decided the trade in value was better on a new truck. i still have that truck bought it with 113k and it's got 320k on it, but at 280k it was getting misfires and the lifter noise was alot more constant, but i knew nothing and just changed the oil which came out fine but started to get black before 3k miles. lucas high mileage synthetic helped it with the lifter tick since 150k when i first decided to see if that would help which it did considerably. idr why but the synthetics are just more slippery and for longer than conventional and keep the oil golden for longer.
    now i know what it means after watching a few of these afm dod issue videos, that's the first sign you have a lifter beginning failure the stabil trak warnings. normally i shut that stuff off when i start up in the winter because i'm a snow plow driver and i know how to drive in snow better than those woman driver aids can help, which actually interferes with compensating in snow and ice. but they are great for woman drivers because the feedback will scare the living hell out of them and make them slow down keeping them out of the ditch mostly.
    i drive like an old grandpa or F1 driver kimi riakkonen depending upon the traffic.

    I must be dense, but since the cam is just opening/closing a valve and even when in this failed condition it is opening/closing valve just not as high lift as should be, how does the miss show up on a scan tool? I thought scan tools interfaced with ECM and electronics, like an injector or coil, how does it show a miss from the lowered compression (I assume)? Thanks.

    • @Brainstangs

      not just any scan tool. A good scan tool with a misfire graphic. Yes a low lift cam lobe that is wearing down will cause a misfire at idle.

    • @aprilgeneric8027
      @aprilgeneric8027 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      4k-14k depends how far along and bad it got. once one cyclinder goes down at the point the cam is getting ruined for that lifter, it works on wrecking the next firing cylinder. my 2013 lifter intake collapsed and it deactivated the firing of that #4 cyclinder, and i'm less spalled than this but the crazy amount of carbon build up on the cylinder right behind it #6 is like powder lead and burned oil combined. this is passenger side, and i have yet to take the head off the driver side due to the rain the last two days.
