    I planted catnip in my garden. My cat was not an outdoor cat, except when I was working in the yard. He was then invited to join me outside where he would spend the next half hour in the sun laying on top of the catnip plant. Happy cat.

    I actually grow catnip mostly for myself! I drink catnip tea for my anxiety and insomnia. I've offered it to my cats but my boy Fred doesn't react to it and my girl Callie goes a little wonky. Like walking into walls and yowling at a sock wonky 😳. So needless to say they don't get offered catnip much.

    I remember introducing my friend's cats to catnip. He was holding his male cat Steve and I gave him a little bit, he loved it, then he reached out with both front paws, took the pot off me (thankfully only a very small pot) and ate it all, then looked at me like 'is that it?' It was so funny. He's such a great chilled cat.
    One of my cats, Phoenix, is actually the daughter of his other cat Stevie. Steve and Stevie are brother and sister.

    I have one cat who gets twitch-skin like symptoms when she’s stressed and catnip brings her out of an episode. We’re super careful not to touch her hind legs and to keep petting gentle and to the head, chest, and belly- her favorite- normally so the only times it happens is when our routine shakes up or something else is making her super stressed.
    There’s also a cat who never went un-feral despite being an indoor cat after my sister got her who also gets catnip to help with her anxiety. Mellows her out and balances her appetite and fear aggression, though I’m now “borrowing” her for some personal training and help that I suspected my sister was not giving her all those years. Slow going but she’s getting more confident and we’re relying less on occasional catnip for bolder behavior and more just play to distract her from stressors.

      My cat loves catnip. I actually used it to coax her into the carrier before we had to go to the vet.
      But don't want to do that every time because I want her to want to go in the carrier because she's comfortable in there.

    • @silenthades
      @silenthades 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@ktctgrl4jsus What I do with my cats so they’re used to carriers is keep them out in the open with a bed inside, usually on top of a side table, shelf, or other place I know they like to sleep. I don’t make it a “vet only” thing, but a comfort and safe place thing.
      The kinda feral that my sister has me cat-sitting was always hiding so I set up the cat room and put a carrier with a bed in it on the ground near where I knew she would instinctively hide under the dresser. She started to prefer the bed in the carrier and got really territorial over it, so I moved it on top of the dresser and now she’s a lot more confident and uses it as a normal bed so when I pat the inside of it, she goes inside willingly. Took less than a month for the transition from floor to shelf, and we’re part way through the second month and now she gets in on command, no catnip necessary. ^~^

      Kudos to you and bless your heart ❤ I love reading about people who work with their cat even though it may not be exactly the kind of kitty they imagined. Not everyone is willing to put in the work. What's the feral's name?

    • @silenthades
      @silenthades ปีที่แล้ว

      @@angelwolf5089 Her name is Dragon and there’s good news with her too. My sister came to check up on her and decided she’d be better with us, so she’s now a permanent part of our family. She’s now so brave she’s willing to come meet guests and let them pet her and gets along with our other stray rescue (Mouse) so well they’re thick as thieves now. No longer hiding in a closet or under a couch all day every day, she’s now our second most outgoing cat (second only to Mouse) and our biggest cuddler. Her anxiety is still an “issue”, but we manage it through a feedback thing where she’ll come over and boop her nose against my finger whenever she gets scared and we’ll just sit there with repeated boops and good girls until she feels better. It started as me using the boops to distract her from paranoid aggression and now she does it to tell me she’s feeling anxious and needs loves. :}

    My former cat Emma didn't react to catnip until she was almost three years old. Then, one day when I put some out for her brothers, she went nuts. In very short order, I had a green cat, she'd rolled it in so much. We used to have another cat who would be well, catatonic. He would sit on a chair, or wherever, as tall as he could make himself, and stare into space, unmoving and unresponsive for yes, around fifteen minutes. Feline reactions to catnip are truly idiosyncratic, and a neverending source of fun for humans whose homes are blessed by cats.

    I've always been careful with giving my cats catnip in the past and especially now with my current kitty. It's not often I have given it to my kitties and that is including catnip toys. My new kitty was recently diagnosed with Ovarian Remnant Syndrome. Awaiting on her upcoming surgery to redo her spay. She has been going in and out of heat so I don't want it to trigger her going into heat when she is not. I've known cats who are 'mean drunks' and very chilled out. Thank you for discussing other options.

    With our cat I had given him some catnip and noticed that he got very reactive in his play he was more likely to swat you with his nails or bite you while on catnip. So I decided to stop giving it to him then later I found some other cabinet that was 100% organic grown in Canada and there was no extra filler in it. He absolutely loves his stuff and it just kind of chills him out and takes some of his anxiety right too. I have tried silver fine he gets actually aggressive with that but I found honeysuckle and he absolutely loves the stuff so now I give him honeysuckle with a little sprinkled catnip over the top and he is a happy camper for at least 4 to 5 hours.
    Now I'm trying to help him with his anxiety especially his separation anxiety. If we leave the house even if the only one person the other one staying home He will sit at the door to the garage and not move until we get back and he's just crying like crazy. We were told to give him gabapentin by the vet that kind of does a little sedate him to use daily. So I'm on the hunt for something that will work for him but not change his personality.

    My 12 month old male kitten becomes sleepy straight away with catnip! Minimal happy drunk reaction, he eats it and rubs his head in it a couple of times and then lays down and falls asleep, it has a gentle sedative effect on him. Silvervine powder though? Now that's a whole other story! He gets super excited and bunny kicks anything that moves, he gets super playful and energetic and wants to sink his teeth into soft toys immediately. Then he settles after about 10 minutes and sleeps again. As soon as he gets a sniff of silvervine even before I open the bag I store it in, he tries desperately to grab it and is so impatient he starts clawing to get it. Not aggressively but very insistent to reach it, like it's his biggest desire in the world. Cats really do live in the moment!

    My current cat is a catnip addict; bring out the package, and he's going to climb up me to get it. I've had others who I could put catnip down for, and they'd sniff and walk away, while the other cats in the house would go crazy. Always interesting to see how one reacts as opposed to another. If your cat is smart, you may have to hide it while they're not looking, or they'll do everything they can to get to it.

    I have tried both catnip and valerian with my cat and as if by some weird magic - no response whatsoever to either of them. My male cat (may his soul rest in peace) loved catnip, so I usually gave it to him on special occasions (when I first introduced it to him, it wasn't a special occasion but more to see if he would even react to it and he was about a year old when he got to try it the first time) such as birthdays and the holidays we celebrated and he always got really playful so I had to make sure I had a toy close or hope that my female cat was in the mood to play. I used the dry stuff because I never managed to get my hands on a live plant and I never gave too much of it to my male, just a little pinch and he was very playful for like 10 minutes and after that he groomed a bit and went to sleep.

    When my hairball was having a bad stomach ache and refused to eat cat grass (not his thing, he never has an interest in it) I gave him very tiny pinches of nip whenever I saw him drooling. I had taken him to the vet and they confirmed everything was good in his mouth but he had an upset stomach but no visible blockage just big gas build up causing his upset stomach/nausea making him drool like a faucet. Whenever I saw him drooling like that I gave him a very tiny pinch and it was so little he didn't respond in his usual crazy excited way but he stopped drooling. Much easier to administer than the ant acid the vet prescribed and seemed to last longer too between drooling fits. He's all better now so it may have been anxiety/separation anxiety at the time.

    To add to the anecdotes.
    My cat is male and reacts to nip.
    He is definitely the 'fight someone in the lot at 2am' type when sober, but when nipped out he gets really chill and just lays in his bed licking his toys.
    He's always lovey to me though, 100% of the time. He gets violent to others who arnet as good with him.
    Generally I don't find nip to be much special for him. It gives him a little weed buzz then it wears off and doesn't affect him for a day.

    So I have a catnip plant by the front door, where the cat likes to hang out on sunny mornings. She never eats it, but rolls around in it. It took her a YEAR to figure it out. Prior I woul take some leaves and rub them on her scratching post - which she loved. But then one day, by accident, she rolled on a frond that was leaning over, and bingo!.She then tried rolling around "near" the plant for a few weeks, which was hit and miss, until she finally got it. Now she sometimes wades right into the middle of the plant and has a role around. (BTW - she is a sleepy, happy drunk)

      I know lavender oils can be very bad for them. Also anything that smokes such as incense or candles can possibly cause asthma over time because their lungs are very sensitive to smoke and strong scents. I have 2 asthmatic cats and this is what our vet said. I felt bad because I like to burn candles and probably contributed to their health issues unintentionally.

    • @buyerbware25
      @buyerbware25 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Almost all essential oils are toxic to cats, and most oils used in cooking or cosmetics are bad for cats. Be careful to clean up kitchen spills immediately, because cats should not ingest herbs, spices, flours, powders or oils, as a general rule. Fruits and vegetables that contain oils should be cleaned up immediately, too. Bath and Body Works products all contain products harmful to cats, birds, fish and amphibians, and most (if not all) of their products are harmful to dogs if licked or inhaled. Be careful, because I have seen products that are harmful to cats being marketed specifically to cat owners.

    We currently took in a stray, who was pregnant, and now she is back in heat & is going crazy. Kittens are 7 weeks old. We can't do anything until she quits nursing & SHE WILL NOT STOP NURSING. However, I put catnip on her scratchers to try to keep her busy while I finished setting things up before bed (kept knocking our gate down thinking she is getting more food). Two out of the three, 7 week old, kittens responded to the catnip! The two that did, were rubbing in it just loving it & then would quickly jump up & run around chasing each other.
    So, there are definitely kittens that respond to it! 😆

    An interesting thing is that one of my cats also loves jasmine. I grow it as a houseplant and whenever it blooms, he loves to inhale the scent. I don’t know if it makes him high or if he just REALLY loves the smell, but it does seem to lower his inhibitions and make him happy (ex. He’s very caution 99.9% of the time and won’t jump up on the plant stand or kitchen counters. But when the jasmine is blooming, I catch him up there)

    We had some valerian root supplements in the back of our cabinet once, specifically a old stiff slide door cabinet above the fridge (good for excess meds and stuff but a bitch to get into)
    One day our two cats had staged a major operation unbeknownst to us, perching on the space in front, somehow using their nails to slide it open slightly, one cravled inside the gap about the with of his head, rummaged through the boxes and packaging (yes thats a risky situation with it being medications), found the stinky box, tossed it out to the other cat who jumped to the kitchen floor and began working tearing up the packaging and before we knew this stealth mission was successful, both cats had munched and rolled in the herbal supplements and we frantically called poison control and vets, luckily confirming that not only were there no additives or risks but the gleeful celebration was nothing to worry about and given the smell they definitely had been going to these lengths with a singular goal: get a glorious heist for a glorious high before the humans even know what hit them.
    Crazy cat story, had to share.

I time when I arrived at my sister's house where the catnip plant was there was a mangled stem and a couple broken branches with a couple shredded leaves. When I asked my sister what happened her eyes went a little wide and glazed over, and she started talking a out for the last 3 days and nights the neighborhood cats and cats she'd never seen before kept arriving to pounce on the plant, to shakeout their portion, to chew on the leaves. They frolicked, fought and snuggled. Decades later I still that my told only the half of the story.

    My kitty has a squeaky toy on a string that has catnip in it and I have another toy, crinkly with catnip inside. She's indifferent to the crinkly one but she goes ballistic for the squeaky, it's her absolute favourite thing and she always puts it in her favourite corners in the house and puts it back if we move it. I got a scratching base for her since she likes to use her claws while standing on things like our furniture, and it had a baggy of catnip with it so you could entice your cat to use it I guess? She got so excited and happy but not hyper, she just rolled around in it and has been using the scratching base ever since (along with the couches but we're working on that) but I noticed that after a few times it stopped having an effect. She likes it when I sprinkle it on toys and she rubs her head on them but that's about it. She still goes absolutely ballistic for the squeaky toy though.
