I once planted 3 catnip plants in a planter for a cute little stray who would hang out on our porch. The next morning he was passed out in the planter with dirt on his face. He had eaten all three plants, roots and all.
I planted catnip in my garden. My cat was not an outdoor cat, except when I was working in the yard. He was then invited to join me outside where he would spend the next half hour in the sun laying on top of the catnip plant. Happy cat.
One of my little guy's quirks was his relationship with catnip. Sometimes he would enjoy it, but never went too crazy. Other times he would completely ignore it. Everything in moderation I suppose...gosh I miss him so much..
@@GingerTheSpoiledCat usually dried but I would try different brands. I don't remember which brand he enjoyed most but it was clear to me that not all catnip is created equal lol
I have 3 cats. Only one reacts to catnip and surprisingly our only female! She’s very shy so it’s so nice to see her come out of her shell on catnip. Love that for her!
I actually grow catnip mostly for myself! I drink catnip tea for my anxiety and insomnia. I've offered it to my cats but my boy Fred doesn't react to it and my girl Callie goes a little wonky. Like walking into walls and yowling at a sock wonky 😳. So needless to say they don't get offered catnip much.
@@heatherlynn4652 Yes! Catnip contains nepetalactone which is similar to the valepotriates found in valerian. It acts as a sedative and is often used to treat insomnia as well anxiety.
One of my cats acts like a crackhead on catnip and the other acts like a complete stoner. Kind of ironic, because that's the complete opposite of how they usually act.
both of my cats get really excited about toys when theyre on catnip, so I give it to them on christmas when they also get a bunch of brand new toys, and let me tell you it is an EVENT
I remember introducing my friend's cats to catnip. He was holding his male cat Steve and I gave him a little bit, he loved it, then he reached out with both front paws, took the pot off me (thankfully only a very small pot) and ate it all, then looked at me like 'is that it?' It was so funny. He's such a great chilled cat. One of my cats, Phoenix, is actually the daughter of his other cat Stevie. Steve and Stevie are brother and sister.
Fun fact… my cats are litter mates, both male. One of them clearly “developed” more before they were neutered. He’s the one who reacts to catnip. The other one still looks and acts like a kitten, and he doesn’t react to it.
My kitties all love catnip and the silvervine blends. Several of their toys have silvervine, some have catnip and others are just fun for them to play with. They also love to steal my nail clippers, my hairbrush and their hairbrush. The male loves to play fetch, the females not so much. Thanks for all you do, it's flying bird on a stick time.
I've always been careful with giving my cats catnip in the past and especially now with my current kitty. It's not often I have given it to my kitties and that is including catnip toys. My new kitty was recently diagnosed with Ovarian Remnant Syndrome. Awaiting on her upcoming surgery to redo her spay. She has been going in and out of heat so I don't want it to trigger her going into heat when she is not. I've known cats who are 'mean drunks' and very chilled out. Thank you for discussing other options.
Not related to video and don’t know if you’ll see it but just want to send a “Thank You!” to you Mr. Galaxy on behalf of myself and several kitties I’ve become friends with, in part, from your previous advice about their behavior, etc. Primarily the tail as energy meter tip; I have several cat friends that really amaze their owners by how much they seem to like me, and I’m certain it’s simply because I simply pay attention to their tail action and stop when they are approaching “full” on their stimulation/energy reading based on their tail movement. Often I’ll give them a well received few scratches and pets until they start the tail twitch and then just rest my hand close until they re-initiate or seem recuperated. It’s amazing how much they seem to appreciate my attempt to avoid overstimulation. One friend’s kitty has a low tolerance for interaction but just loves sitting close to me. It’s so fascinating to watch. She’s such a sweet kitty but just was so poorly understood! Now her owners understand her more too and everyone is just to much happier, making quality of life for all so much better. Thanks again!
I don't have a cat in my family, but these Jackson Galaxy videos are addictive. And I have learned a lot about the exotic and mysterious creature known as Felis Silvestris Catus.
My cat is happy drunk. I gave him that when he is a pain in the butt and that relaxes him. It's a must sometimes and he enjoys life more after a couple if minutes stoned. The other cat has a small toy beaver with a pouch on it with catnip inside and she sleeps on that or cuddle with it. It helps her with her anxiety so in this house catnip is a much needed thing
I have two cats who love catnip. They get silly, they rub in it, they'll sort of play together, but just cuddle and groom one another in the end. My third cat is a very skittish cat that has taken time learning how to approach her. She thankfully doesn't get hyper aggressive and the other cats give her space other than random times where she'll give a soft swat (no hisses! yay!) and they'll stare at each other and walk on. But with catnip...she bit THROUGH my finger. My other cats, you can give them catnip out of your hand and they're VERY gentle, even with treats. She bit straight through my nail. So it's good to see a video like this to bring a little more understanding about it. After that, I'd made sure my kiddos knew that she was a no catnip'er and so we adjusted the way everyone interacted with her so that she's comfortable and set up for success.
I have one cat who gets twitch-skin like symptoms when she’s stressed and catnip brings her out of an episode. We’re super careful not to touch her hind legs and to keep petting gentle and to the head, chest, and belly- her favorite- normally so the only times it happens is when our routine shakes up or something else is making her super stressed. There’s also a cat who never went un-feral despite being an indoor cat after my sister got her who also gets catnip to help with her anxiety. Mellows her out and balances her appetite and fear aggression, though I’m now “borrowing” her for some personal training and help that I suspected my sister was not giving her all those years. Slow going but she’s getting more confident and we’re relying less on occasional catnip for bolder behavior and more just play to distract her from stressors.
My cat loves catnip. I actually used it to coax her into the carrier before we had to go to the vet. But don't want to do that every time because I want her to want to go in the carrier because she's comfortable in there.
@@ktctgrl4jsus What I do with my cats so they’re used to carriers is keep them out in the open with a bed inside, usually on top of a side table, shelf, or other place I know they like to sleep. I don’t make it a “vet only” thing, but a comfort and safe place thing. The kinda feral that my sister has me cat-sitting was always hiding so I set up the cat room and put a carrier with a bed in it on the ground near where I knew she would instinctively hide under the dresser. She started to prefer the bed in the carrier and got really territorial over it, so I moved it on top of the dresser and now she’s a lot more confident and uses it as a normal bed so when I pat the inside of it, she goes inside willingly. Took less than a month for the transition from floor to shelf, and we’re part way through the second month and now she gets in on command, no catnip necessary. ^~^
Kudos to you and bless your heart ❤ I love reading about people who work with their cat even though it may not be exactly the kind of kitty they imagined. Not everyone is willing to put in the work. What's the feral's name?
@@angelwolf5089 Her name is Dragon and there’s good news with her too. My sister came to check up on her and decided she’d be better with us, so she’s now a permanent part of our family. She’s now so brave she’s willing to come meet guests and let them pet her and gets along with our other stray rescue (Mouse) so well they’re thick as thieves now. No longer hiding in a closet or under a couch all day every day, she’s now our second most outgoing cat (second only to Mouse) and our biggest cuddler. Her anxiety is still an “issue”, but we manage it through a feedback thing where she’ll come over and boop her nose against my finger whenever she gets scared and we’ll just sit there with repeated boops and good girls until she feels better. It started as me using the boops to distract her from paranoid aggression and now she does it to tell me she’s feeling anxious and needs loves. :}
I noticed that my cat was coming home and behaving ... stoned ... for want of a better description. Turns out my neighbours are giving him catnip. He seems to be happy about it.
I woke up one morning to find it all over the floor. Had a stash of cat nip in a plastic baggie and dang if he didn't figure out how to open not only the drawer, but the baggie too! What a sight in the morning!
Hi Jackson. My cat Callie had kidney disease and when she was 19 she loved her catnip and was so chilled too then she was ready to play again. Mom and I felt she deserved it and she was a happy cat until she was almost 22yrs old and we had to put her to rest when she was almost 22yrs old and it makes me happy that we gave her the best three yrs of her life and she was happy. She even loved toys too. Thanks Jackson for your knowledge and intelligence too on cats. I always go to your channel for answers. When you did Cat from Hell, you should have actually called it Humans from Hell. I agree, there is no such thing as a bad cat. EVER! God bless and Happy Caturday too. Sue M. Afternoon Sir. I appreciate your response back to my comment and experience too with my cats that have unfortunately passed away. However, if I may say, I don’t understand what you are trying to say? Are you trying to be sarcastic or nasty about cats? If nasty, I don’t appreciate you commenting or even bing sarcastic too. 'We' are about to try it. My new 6.5yo baby (female). I have started seeds, now at seedling stage. She sniffs at it, with a little interest - so there is potential! If so, she will be the first cat in 40 years that does the catnip! All the others - nothing! This is quite exciting if she is disposed to it.
I have two new kittens, born on the 17th and 18th of March. One of them is hunting the catnip sardine toy and is playing with it, rubbing himself over it, he's really into it. His brother isn't interested at all. So I was surprised when Jackson said that a kitten of his age wouldn't be interested in catnip.
I have so many of your videos saved toa playlist for when i get my cat next month! I've been watching and researching since the end of March. I've owned the weirdest of animals and dogs, somehow I've never had a cat. I'm excited and just wanted to thank you for this wealth of knowledge
@@martymcfly88mph35 well she's so amazing we got a second cat 2 weeks ago! A 3 month old kitten. And again thanks to Jackson's videos, and my cats history of being a mom, introducing the two is going 100x better than I'd hoped for!
This was helpful thank you! My new cat has been a little timid while playing with me (and yes I’m following all of your playing recs to the max!) but I also noticed she seemed more involved with self play, so I got her a catnip carrot. She LOVES IT, it’s the most active I’ve seen her play since having her
My girl loves catnip! She actually actively asks me for it, just like how she asks for cuddles, food and playtime. It makes her really playful and excited at first and then super mellow after. So absolutely best of both worlds for her :)
All my furry felines love Catnip. Any size shape or form. From catnip bubbles to catnip treats, balls, straight from the garden, dried and tied or in a toy. None become aggressive. All of them roll in it first. Then eat a bit, then groom excessively and then finally sleep. Purring contentedly! Hilarious to watch all 11 of them. Couple of times a week. Tho they have toys always available they help themselves to. They choose the catnip toys mostly to throw around.
That's how all three of mine react, just silly. The only female is kind of grouchy normally but she gets silly and playful with catnip. I was going to plant catnip outside, but a neighbor warned me that she did that once and it attracted bobcat and lynx to her garden! We also have mountain lions here, so maybe I could try growing indoors instead.
I have two cats. One goes absolutely insane on catnip. Like, zoomiez x10. He’s never aggressive or anything like that, but gets so much energy. The other couldn’t care less whether it’s there or not. No effect whatsoever.
Thank you for this video! I have quite a bit of catnip in the house because it came with other products I’ve bought. Because I didn’t know how to use it, I haven’t used it much. Now I know it won’t hurt her I will use it in a toy she has sometime. Thank you again.
I have a rescue/feral 6 month kitty. I purchased toys for her and I gave her one of them today to play with. She went. Bonkers playing with it. I thought wow that’s odd. She’s going wild. Then she fell asleep. That’s when I said uh oh does this thing have cat nip on it? To my surprise it does. I was scared because I didn’t know if it was harmful or not. I’m so glad it is not. Im still going to hold off on giving her catnip.
With our cat I had given him some catnip and noticed that he got very reactive in his play he was more likely to swat you with his nails or bite you while on catnip. So I decided to stop giving it to him then later I found some other cabinet that was 100% organic grown in Canada and there was no extra filler in it. He absolutely loves his stuff and it just kind of chills him out and takes some of his anxiety right too. I have tried silver fine he gets actually aggressive with that but I found honeysuckle and he absolutely loves the stuff so now I give him honeysuckle with a little sprinkled catnip over the top and he is a happy camper for at least 4 to 5 hours. Now I'm trying to help him with his anxiety especially his separation anxiety. If we leave the house even if the only one person the other one staying home He will sit at the door to the garage and not move until we get back and he's just crying like crazy. We were told to give him gabapentin by the vet that kind of does a little sedate him to use daily. So I'm on the hunt for something that will work for him but not change his personality.
"I don't know where i'm going with this" I love all of the knowledge jackson gives us, but funny moments like these are also why i look forward to his videos as well lol
My cat Bear is a mix of happy/feisty. My other cat Ben....doesn't really react to it. Gets a little squirrely for a minute, then just chills. DEFINITELY going to try the spray catnip on me!!!
My current cat is a catnip addict; bring out the package, and he's going to climb up me to get it. I've had others who I could put catnip down for, and they'd sniff and walk away, while the other cats in the house would go crazy. Always interesting to see how one reacts as opposed to another. If your cat is smart, you may have to hide it while they're not looking, or they'll do everything they can to get to it.
My former cat Emma didn't react to catnip until she was almost three years old. Then, one day when I put some out for her brothers, she went nuts. In very short order, I had a green cat, she'd rolled it in so much. We used to have another cat who would be well, catatonic. He would sit on a chair, or wherever, as tall as he could make himself, and stare into space, unmoving and unresponsive for yes, around fifteen minutes. Feline reactions to catnip are truly idiosyncratic, and a neverending source of fun for humans whose homes are blessed by cats.
Thank you for all this information! Just this week, I was discussing catnip with my fellow cat parents. I got my girl a small catnip plant and she likes to attack it. She knocks over the little pot in grows in ands roll in it. I think for her it's about playing with the leaves. I would love to try the silver vine.
Just wanted to say that. this is my favorite channel. I dont own a cat (yet) but these are very informative for when i do but also to share with my family who have cats so they make their lives even happier. Thank you Jackson for the amazing videos you post here !
Hey, I've got to try the catnip spray next time I need to repel mosquitoes! One of my cats loves to eat catnip, so I keep some growing in spring and summer. He gets a couple of leaves off a sprig, and I make a "meowjito" for myself with the rest, with lime juice and elderflower syrup. Very tasty.
I've been using mint oil to repel the biting gnats that have given me hives, but I'm afraid to try using catnip as an insect repellent. I think that it would attract wildcats (lynx, bobcat, ocelot)?
Thank you for talking about the other three plants that cats might enjoy. I buy my humane-grade organic catnip in the bulk herb area at my local food co-op. Since it's dried I rub it between my fingers, it seems the pressure and heat from my fingers awaken the nepetalactone in the nip.
we have two cats (sisters) and the oldest is very loving, but very high strung and my god, is she a mean drunk! she turns into a snarling, scratching lunatic when she gets close to catnip. her younger sister is a much more stubborn, aloof character. she loves rolling in catnip, having a snack and taking a long nap on the radiator.
We had a kiwi tree/bush in our backyard (it looked a bit weird and didn't grow fruits, because it really wasn't the right climate). My mom often complained about holes around the roots until we found out that our cats and pretty much every cat in our area just went to town on them. They unearthed the roots, chewed them up and rolled in it like there was no tomorrow. We gave root cuts to friends with cats, same every time.
Valerian root is very much known in Germany, as a mild medicine for humans (helps to relax and sleep), and that it makes cats go "nuts" 😂 Grandma used to tell us stories about it, now and then... She didn't like cats, by the way...
My 12 month old male kitten becomes sleepy straight away with catnip! Minimal happy drunk reaction, he eats it and rubs his head in it a couple of times and then lays down and falls asleep, it has a gentle sedative effect on him. Silvervine powder though? Now that's a whole other story! He gets super excited and bunny kicks anything that moves, he gets super playful and energetic and wants to sink his teeth into soft toys immediately. Then he settles after about 10 minutes and sleeps again. As soon as he gets a sniff of silvervine even before I open the bag I store it in, he tries desperately to grab it and is so impatient he starts clawing to get it. Not aggressively but very insistent to reach it, like it's his biggest desire in the world. Cats really do live in the moment!
Valerian really helped when my cat had Hyperesthesia! (at least i think it was) It was really sad seeing her hurt herself and hallucinate, it lasted very long too. I thought i might distract her with valerian one time. She ate it and fell asleep in like 10 minutes, after that the seizure was gone. She doesnt have this anymore because but everytime she did have an episode valerian helped, i recommend.
Once I was cutting celery and dropped some leaves on the floor and found my cat rolling all over it. I looked it up and it also has a similar effect to catnip.
Love this one! Definitely going to try catnip spray as mosquito repellent this Summer 😂 My younger cat is not really into catnip, but she goes crazy for silvervine infused toys and chew sticks 🌱
One of my cats, Remy, was the angry drunk. He was a huge bully on catnip. Another one of my cats, Amour, throws up if he eats catnip. Amour is now almost 15 and still reaponds to catnip, (I don't let him eat much so he doesn't throw up), but he responds less now then my younger cat, Marina-Bunny. I think all my cats throughout the years have responded to catnip once they were mostly grown up. Also, I used to take valarian myself. He's right! It smells horrid! But my cats always seemed super interested. I always wondered why they wanted something that smelled so bad.
I have catnip or 'catcrack' (due to its affect on my 16yr old Norwegian) plant in a sunken pot in the garden, covered in a upturned handing basket to stop them killing the plant when they roll on it. often on sunny days you can find my boy and the neighbours cat on their backs together rubbing over the basket - like a cat opium den. he turns his nose up to shop bought nip/vine. Valerian treats are a must about 20mins before travelling to vets etc. great for anxious cat.
Thank you Mr Galaxy ... well worth watching to the end for the blooper reel. 🙂 Our cat is a responsible, occasional user who knows when she's had enough, and tends to look contentedly philosophical for a while rather than climbing the walls as befits her age and dignity.
Zorro (RIP old man) was the happiest hippie in his own patch of fresh catnip. That patch grew like weed and he'd graze that weed until he was blissed out and just rolled back and forth in the catnip, completely marinating himself in the stuff.
Your channel is like cat nip! I love all your videos! Thank you for all your hard work for all the cat lovers around the world. My 5-m kitten had her first cat nip today and attacked my feet more than usual ! 😀
I know a boat cat who is really sure footed, but one day came home soaked and upset. Turned out he and his friend were high on the 'nip which grows on the bank. The other cat pushed him in the canal 🤣😂
Jackson, your videos are both informative and entertaining. I won't give my cats catnip. One gets too aggressive and the other just gets the zoomies. Just makes them crazy.
Thank you Jackson for your Brilliant show! Great info and wonderful presentation! This was absolutely delightful, especially your description of Valerian! Bwaaahaaahaaa 😸😝🤣😹it’s funny ‘cause it’s true!! Keep up the great work😻Blessings & Love ❤️✝️ Minister Carole from Lynchburg VA USA
Thank you for this, very educational. My late cat wasn't interested in catnip, not sure if just him or due to his age. I adopted him when he was 7 and he was my first cat. Will be interesting to see how my new cat responds when I am ready to adopt again. 😺
Jackson, you are a hoot. I really enjoy 😉 the outtakes. This episode answer a lot of concerns for me. Now I know why my kittens 😸 were totally indifferent to katnip. Also relieved 😌 know that it's not harmful. I'll try it again when they're a little bit older. They are exactly 6 months old right now. My female is a frequent zoomer. It will be interesting to see her reaction when she is older. The male is active too,but he will chill more often then his sister. Their names are Hugs and Kisses. Just thought my like to know that.😊🐈🐈⬛ A calico and a gray and
Wow. This is some awesome info. I'll definitely get to these plants for my cat. I've been buying fresh catnip from a local grower and drying the leaves in the oven for my cat. She goes nuts over it. I was going to grow my own this summer, but there's a shortage! She's got three pots of catgrass (oat for now, I'm going to experiment with others later). She loves plants.
Ours loves lemongrass. I tried one of the fancy packs of cat grass (stuff besides oats or with oats), they didn't like it...but yard crabgrass was better apparently...
@@kthearcher3357 Huh. I love lemongrass too. I have to do more research on grasses. We've got plenty of crabgrass in the lawn, but my girl's a former stray and wants zero to do with the great outdoors.
@@authenticpoppy I keep a pot of the oat grass inside for them and I was hoping the pots of lemongrass would have spread more to have them more jungle like(5gallon pot size). Alas, they aren't as big as I'd like, however, they are still alive and 2yrs old! Girls love to chew on them.
@@kthearcher3357 I ordered a variety of stuff today, including more window pots and different varieties of grass, including lemon grass. I got some catnip seeds and I'm going to sow them in a contained area of the lawn so she'll have fresh catnip, dried by me. We have some spoiled cats, eh?
Love the info on all the other options besides catnip. However, I'm gonna make catnip tea from what I've got in the cupboard since my cats have no interest in it. Love DEET alternatives! :D
I have four older cats and they all react! Toby and Trace are almost seventeen and they eat it and chill and sometimes they’ll play. Garth, my blue eyed fiend goes bonkers. He’s 12 ½. His sister Pea is twelve and she goes wild, gets aggressive and attacks anybody who comes close! And yes, Garth and Pea are full siblings from two back to back litters…..barn cats! 😻😻😻😻
I remember when I first bought a few valerian root toys for my cats, no one warned me about the smell. The memory of me opening the box they came in is SO vivid in my mind... THAT SMELL. It literally made my apartment smell like ass and old cheese for weeks, lol. All the guests that would come visit me during the week were holding their noses and asking me what that awful smell was. My mom made me put the toys in plastic bags whenever she would come and visit. :D
That funny I have a patch of catnip in my backyard just for my cats. They love it and it’s so organic. Cut flowers off so they won’t seed and flourish all through my yard. I save some in bags for them during the winter months.😻
20+ years ago I had a cat who I said was the "Just say no" poster child for catnip. She completely ignored it like it had no scent at all. Ten years ago I had two cats who would always lay on opposite ends of the couch refusing to acknowledge each other. Except when I put catnip down one would get silly and roll in it and completely mellow out. Then the other one would spend the entire day trying to lick it all out of her fur.
@@KAMMD My elderly female cat has always gone bonkers for the stuff, still does at 20 fingers crossed she doesn't lose that as she gets up there in age
I'm so glad you touched on alternatives! My friend got me valerian tea once and my cat climbed up and shredded the remainder of the packets. She looked very "happy" for a while. I researched a bit & bought more, added a tea packet to her catnip jar. It's heavenly!
My girl enjoys catnip, but it does often bring out her aggression. She's kind of a bully to my roommate's older cat, who doesn't respond to nip at all. She prefers silver vine, while my girl is somewhat indifferent. I find that the spray stuff tends to bring out the goblin in her even moreso, making her uncharacteristically hiss and growl when annoyed. The naturally growing stuff we found one day during a harness walk seems to produce a calmer effect, but I don't want to grow it, because it's a very invasive weed. I've tried valerian root on both of them, but there wasn't much response. Although, this could be because the root was a few years old. Got it at an herbal store about five years ago for my previous cat, who enjoyed it very much. I don't mind the smell, so much as the pointy chips they come in. If you accidentally get that stuff in your carpet, I promise, your bare feet will regret it. Never heard of Tartarian Honeysuckle, but I'll give it a try. Anything to make my girls happy. Plus, the name sounds cool. ^_^ I see that Jackson sells his own chipped brand of the stuff, but I'd like to just find a solid chunk of wood. Again, splinters suck.
I have tried both catnip and valerian with my cat and as if by some weird magic - no response whatsoever to either of them. My male cat (may his soul rest in peace) loved catnip, so I usually gave it to him on special occasions (when I first introduced it to him, it wasn't a special occasion but more to see if he would even react to it and he was about a year old when he got to try it the first time) such as birthdays and the holidays we celebrated and he always got really playful so I had to make sure I had a toy close or hope that my female cat was in the mood to play. I used the dry stuff because I never managed to get my hands on a live plant and I never gave too much of it to my male, just a little pinch and he was very playful for like 10 minutes and after that he groomed a bit and went to sleep.
To add to the anecdotes. My cat is male and reacts to nip. He is definitely the 'fight someone in the lot at 2am' type when sober, but when nipped out he gets really chill and just lays in his bed licking his toys. He's always lovey to me though, 100% of the time. He gets violent to others who arnet as good with him. Generally I don't find nip to be much special for him. It gives him a little weed buzz then it wears off and doesn't affect him for a day.
My cat loves catnip. I only give it to him about once a week but when I do he knows where its at. No matter where he is in the house he ears that drawer being open up. I just bought some Silvervine and catnip blended together looking forward to see the affects it has on him.
Yes! I used to get Valerian root tea to help me sleep and one day my brother's cat got in to the cupboard and just went nuts busting open all the tea bags and rubbing himself all in them. We didn't know about valerian root being a cat stimulant at the time but found out in the most hilarious way!
The same thing happened to me!! I wanted to unwind after a long day. The cat however went berserk and then passed out. I put a tea pouch in her catnip tub to stink up her toys.
No catnip needed in this house. My kids' 2 fur babies play happily during the day but there is something about the silence of night that turns them both into expert parkour stunt artists. I can't imagine them on catnip! Lol (Needless to say they are also given a bedtime along with their owners) :)
Could you please make a video clarifying whether or not is true that having home fresheners, oils, incense, etc. may affect a cat's health? Thank you! xxx
I know lavender oils can be very bad for them. Also anything that smokes such as incense or candles can possibly cause asthma over time because their lungs are very sensitive to smoke and strong scents. I have 2 asthmatic cats and this is what our vet said. I felt bad because I like to burn candles and probably contributed to their health issues unintentionally.
Yes, would love to know this too! I know he said in one video those reed diffusers can be toxic to your cat but it would be great to know about air fresheners.
Almost all essential oils are toxic to cats, and most oils used in cooking or cosmetics are bad for cats. Be careful to clean up kitchen spills immediately, because cats should not ingest herbs, spices, flours, powders or oils, as a general rule. Fruits and vegetables that contain oils should be cleaned up immediately, too. Bath and Body Works products all contain products harmful to cats, birds, fish and amphibians, and most (if not all) of their products are harmful to dogs if licked or inhaled. Be careful, because I have seen products that are harmful to cats being marketed specifically to cat owners.
woah, id never heard of silvervine - super pretty plant AND a fun cat treat. my cat has a very mild love for catnip. she doesnt go crazy, but she loves to eat it 🤷♂️😇 time to get some silvervine for future treats! cheers for another great video, mate. really appreciate ya
Can cats have "bad trips" with catnip or silvervine? One of mine (male, neutered) almost seems to become paranoid... In human behaviors, I'd say twitchy and anxious. Can't say it seems like he's having any fun.
I once planted 3 catnip plants in a planter for a cute little stray who would hang out on our porch. The next morning he was passed out in the planter with dirt on his face. He had eaten all three plants, roots and all.
See, this is why you shouldn't give drugs to homeless people.

that happened in the summer,i bought catmint and exactly the same right down to the roots, but i kept some under my fishtank lights

I planted catnip in my garden. My cat was not an outdoor cat, except when I was working in the yard. He was then invited to join me outside where he would spend the next half hour in the sun laying on top of the catnip plant. Happy cat.

Your cat:oh wow man I love gardening I feel at one with nature man
One of my little guy's quirks was his relationship with catnip. Sometimes he would enjoy it, but never went too crazy. Other times he would completely ignore it. Everything in moderation I suppose...gosh I miss him so much..
Was it fresh or dried?
@@GingerTheSpoiledCat usually dried but I would try different brands. I don't remember which brand he enjoyed most but it was clear to me that not all catnip is created equal lol

I have 3 cats. Only one reacts to catnip and surprisingly our only female! She’s very shy so it’s so nice to see her come out of her shell on catnip. Love that for her!
so cute and sweet
I had three cats to, but they just all disappeared except for one 😢 but that one, Gracie, she loved it so much!
One cat rubs all over it and goes to sleep. The other cat tries to murder the sleepy cat.
We no longer have catnip in the house.
Lol! Too funny!
Which one u buy the powder silver vine or the sticks. I would love to buy it for my cat
Hello Kalen how are you doing today
Does it really help with anxiety?
@@heatherlynn4652 Yes! Catnip contains nepetalactone which is similar to the valepotriates found in valerian. It acts as a sedative and is often used to treat insomnia as well anxiety.
Do u get high?
@@heatherlynn4652 yes it does
My cat is more the happy drunk type and I find it best to keep it in a little cotton sock or pouch.
😂😂Happy Drunk 🤣
Oh good idea 👍
The happy drunk type! 😆 How sweet!
Keep it in the refrigerator to make the affect last longer. 🐱
The explanation of bully cat vs fearful cat definitely describes the two cats I have. Catnip in moderation, and in a toy.
Fun fact… my cats are litter mates, both male. One of them clearly “developed” more before they were neutered. He’s the one who reacts to catnip. The other one still looks and acts like a kitten, and he doesn’t react to it.
Yup. Don't have a cat. Addicted and soothed by your intriguing snippets 😊
Hello Gloria how are you doing today
The kitty-kush is good medicine. :)
Can catnip help my 5month old kitten to stop crying late at night like when she would wake up from her sleep she would cry and cry
@@angelwolf5089 Her name is Dragon and there’s good news with her too. My sister came to check up on her and decided she’d be better with us, so she’s now a permanent part of our family. She’s now so brave she’s willing to come meet guests and let them pet her and gets along with our other stray rescue (Mouse) so well they’re thick as thieves now. No longer hiding in a closet or under a couch all day every day, she’s now our second most outgoing cat (second only to Mouse) and our biggest cuddler. Her anxiety is still an “issue”, but we manage it through a feedback thing where she’ll come over and boop her nose against my finger whenever she gets scared and we’ll just sit there with repeated boops and good girls until she feels better. It started as me using the boops to distract her from paranoid aggression and now she does it to tell me she’s feeling anxious and needs loves. :}
My cat LOVES catnip. To say love is an understatement. He literally rolls himself on catnip.
I noticed that my cat was coming home and behaving ... stoned ... for want of a better description. Turns out my neighbours are giving him catnip. He seems to be happy about it.
Lol! Getting drunk in the alley! :D

I like a nice calming cup of catnip tea when the day gets stressful.
I’m excited to learn about the nepalactones or whatever is in this plant! Thanks for the education!

I have so many of your videos saved toa playlist for when i get my cat next month! I've been watching and researching since the end of March. I've owned the weirdest of animals and dogs, somehow I've never had a cat. I'm excited and just wanted to thank you for this wealth of knowledge
How is owning the kitty? They're such little awesome animals.
Do you have any videos of them?
@@cattatron Yes many.

I have two cats. One goes absolutely insane on catnip. Like, zoomiez x10. He’s never aggressive or anything like that, but gets so much energy. The other couldn’t care less whether it’s there or not. No effect whatsoever.
one of your best videos - I didn't know any of these facts, and thank you or explaining the genetic link !
Thank you for this video! I have quite a bit of catnip in the house because it came with other products I’ve bought. Because I didn’t know how to use it, I haven’t used it much. Now I know it won’t hurt her I will use it in a toy she has sometime. Thank you again.
Hello Sally how are you doing today
I have a rescue/feral 6 month kitty. I purchased toys for her and I gave her one of them today to play with. She went. Bonkers playing with it. I thought wow that’s odd. She’s going wild. Then she fell asleep. That’s when I said uh oh does this thing have cat nip on it? To my surprise it does. I was scared because I didn’t know if it was harmful or not. I’m so glad it is not. Im still going to hold off on giving her catnip.
8:05 Catnip for humans!?! LOVE IT! And love your channel. Thanks for all your great info and humor.
Thank you Jackson!!! I love you too! Love to all your kitties and Minoo!🥰
Very tasty.
Yes! Cats seem to like fresh catnip more than dried, in my experience
Yum!! If you haven’t tried catnip tea I highly recommend that as well :) I seem to find it just as relaxing as the cats do! Haha!
I've been using mint oil to repel the biting gnats that have given me hives, but I'm afraid to try using catnip as an insect repellent. I think that it would attract wildcats (lynx, bobcat, ocelot)?
I didn't know about those alternatives! My black cat LOVES cat nip, it makes him roll around on the floor like a furry sausage.
My cat gets excited and playful then passes out and cuddles with me like she always does 🥰
My cat goes cray cray and sees me as the "IT" in a tag or Prey, when catnip is in the table
Absolutely incredible video. Thank you so much!
My cat is about 12 years old give or take and I just gave her some catnip for the first time. She cant stop meowing at me to pet her! I love it!
Once I was cutting celery and dropped some leaves on the floor and found my cat rolling all over it. I looked it up and it also has a similar effect to catnip.
Hello Charlotte how are you doing today
Mine loves to eat celery leaves. She loves her veggies.
Thank you Mr. Galaxy!
Love this one! Definitely going to try catnip spray as mosquito repellent this Summer 😂 My younger cat is not really into catnip, but she goes crazy for silvervine infused toys and chew sticks 🌱
Thank you so much for the information!
Off topic - your shirt’s pattern is really cool.
This was highly useful for our newly adopted timid girl. Thanks!
I have a couple catnip plants in my backyard. All the neighborhood cats come to my yard to play.
Thank you Mr Galaxy ... well worth watching to the end for the blooper reel. 🙂 Our cat is a responsible, occasional user who knows when she's had enough, and tends to look contentedly philosophical for a while rather than climbing the walls as befits her age and dignity.

Hello Carol how are you doing today
My male cat is now 1 year old, and he doesn’t respond to catnip. Glad to know that there are alternatives!
Can be good for relaxing you too in tea form. Um I probably wouldn't drink the bag from the pet shop though.
@@kthearcher3357 I wasn't planning on drinking it but rather using as bug repellent.
I guess cats can get a catnip hangover that makes them sluggish for a few hours after sniffing the catnip.
I plant catnip in my garden and pick a few leaves everyday for my cat. The outdoor strays are always rolling around in my garden. 😂
Female cats lack the CatNip gene
@@KAMMD Not all females. My companion's female cat loves it.
I see that Jackson sells his own chipped brand of the stuff, but I'd like to just find a solid chunk of wood.
My cats really like their ground catnip, but they LOVE their silver vine sticks!!!
No catnip needed in this house. My kids' 2 fur babies play happily during the day but there is something about the silence of night that turns them both into expert parkour stunt artists. I can't imagine them on catnip! Lol
(Needless to say they are also given a bedtime along with their owners) :)
Hello Grace how are you doing today
I am with you Jackson! I didn’t give my cat nip until he was old and I carefully watched him.
Could you please make a video clarifying whether or not is true that having home fresheners, oils, incense, etc. may affect a cat's health? Thank you! xxx
I never thought of that.
Essential oils are not good for the health of cats or dogs but more harmful to cats.
Be careful, because I have seen products that are harmful to cats being marketed specifically to cat owners.
woah, id never heard of silvervine - super pretty plant AND a fun cat treat. my cat has a very mild love for catnip. she doesnt go crazy, but she loves to eat it 🤷♂️😇
time to get some silvervine for future treats!
cheers for another great video, mate. really appreciate ya
Can cats have "bad trips" with catnip or silvervine? One of mine (male, neutered) almost seems to become paranoid... In human behaviors, I'd say twitchy and anxious. Can't say it seems like he's having any fun.
