Funny story: my older cat never used to vocalize much. I accidentally closed him in a closet one night, and he didn't make a sound until he got tired of being in there. And then his sound was bumping against the door trying to get out, not meowing! Then we got another cat, and she's a real talker. After a few years of listening to her talk to us all the time and seeing how much attention she got, our older cat is now a talker too! I swear he learned it from her.

@@lindagrabnertravis3475 A friend told me one of the saddest things she's seen was when they moved out of their house (they previously had lost a faithful moggy which her kids had always thought about). Anyway moving out and right down the back of shed they found a massive long carpet reem and right down the bottom was a patiently waiting curled up mummified cat. It's something I try not to think about. I hope God has special things waiting for little souls such as these.

Mate, you are right! I rescued a semi-feral cat about a year ago. Vasya is around three y/o boy. He was skinny, quite malnourished, shy, easily intimidated cat. Took him off the streets, he had never had a home. Vasya was a silent cat. Like dead silent 🐈. Well than, it took him around one month to become none stop talking cat! I suspect he learned that from other cats (house cats) that roam around here. They are very friendly to me, especially when I give them little treats.
Now, as the result of that, our Vasya Hairy Bum Bum Cuteness Overload Little Bunny 🐰, does not shut up! 🤣😽 I love it. Best cat on the planet. I can easily have a conversation with my boy. He answers to me when I address him! It’s hilarious 😆. He also announces his arrival at which ever room he enters. Vasya is in da house. 🤣
PS. He loves us soooo much. I have never seen an animal being so grateful like Vasya is. He would’ve died last winter from cold, wet weather 🇬🇧 /hunger/cat fight wounds etc. He is doing well now....doubled in size and very much loved

Anyone else have a cat who's learned how to say a human word? Our little chatty lady taught herself to say "hello" to get our attention, because that's how we always greet her. We'll hear a little "Hewwo" outside the bedroom or bathroom door when it's closed. Sometimes she even pronounces the L's correctly, and it's amazing. 😁❤😸

Well done with the harness. I was able to do that with sibling kittens I had from 6 weeks old -- but tried it this weekend with a couple of rescue cats of 2 years old and they have found two different ways to get out of good harness, right ize, properly fitted, just wriggled legs out first and went backwards; the other did a quick shimmy and a backwrads summersault which brought her out upside down and head first. Have sent back the harnesses for a refund! I think you have to have the right cat personaltity and catch them as kittens

Somehow my cat Ozzy knew something was wrong even tho he stays in my bedroom. He was following me around and then when we were taking Chui to the car, Ozzy ran up to the window. We picked up chui and held her up to the window to “say goodbye”. I could hear him crying at the door when we were leaving. A year ago, my mom’s other dog Chico also passed away except he died in our home. When we were waiting to have his body taken, Ozzy knew something was wrong then too. I’m referring to my mom when she was going thru chemo & radiation, both my cats would lay on her lap and purr for hours every day. The purring would only stop when they would eventually fall asleep. We saw similar behavior from Zozo when my wife got really sick. She ended up having some of her colon removed and it was a really painful procedure. Zozo would lay on the bed near my wife, and when it really hurt, would cuddle close to my wife's face and put a paw out and just open and close her little toes. No claw, just moving what my kids call "her foot beans" in and out, in and out, like a massage. And that would put my wife to sleep, often waking up later feeling great, with that cat somewhere on the bed acting like a sentinel.
Should anyone but me come into the room, she would run them out! And she had her ways to make it clear: This one needs rest, go away!
And so one day, I was there, my wife sleeping and healing, Zozo came to me and was going to let me know it was time to eat. On the way over, there was this piece of brush. Just the flexible plastic part with all the little spikes. I had stepped on it, meaning it was slowly flexing back, and was going to pop a little. Zozo was walking around it when the pop happened! She hopped back, looking at me with her tail in that question mark shape. So iconic! Of course the question was, "Where is it's face?"
I picked it up, smelled it, bent it this way and that and then set it back down. Zozo's turn. She sniffed a couple times, picked it up and took it to her basket over in the corner of another room. Somehow, in all of that it became hers, and that's where that thing was for a very long time. She would sometimes play with it, and it ended up back in that basket most of the time.
These furry friends are complex and interesting beings sharing this world with us. Sure glad we've got them. The place would be a bit more lonely without cats.

My year old male does the trill a lot even before we got his baby brother and I used to worry if it was because he was unhappy or fed up but if it's considered a positive thing that has given me peace of mind ❤ I have heard a cat make the same sound of a seagull and the seagull nearly fell for it and that really shocked me 😂

My male cat does the caterwauling when he eats his dinner. All 4 of our cats are fixed... none of my girls make it... Is it like he's pounding his chest when he eats? It just sounds like he's yodeling with glee. He'll do it for several minutes...
When our first female came home she tarzan yelled at mealtime. It took almost 6 months for her to learn meowing from our male. She learned the trill eventually on her own too. Our 2 female kittens chatter at windows.

Our cat will whisper to us. We got into the habit of whispering so as not to wake the kids in our tiny house. Our cat Reese will respond to us when we whisper "Good morning" by opening her mouth wide and letting out a little whiff of air. She'll have a whole conversation with us just "hhhhhhhh"ing to us. She's been doing this for ten years. It's sweet and calming. :-)

I've been trying to describe this for a while now! My Pudge follows me into the potty and he sort of breathe talks. A sort of breathy (not a word) chirp. I love that time between us, the bathroom has super calming light in there, he just rolls around a bit. Then he's so cute that I have to pick him up and he sort of melts into my arms for this hug thing. It's so sweet. He puts his little back feet into the palm of my hand and lays his head on my shoulder and I just love him so very much. I was in there crying the other night bc only he and I (and now the internet) know about this little routine we have. I just don't even want to live in a world where he doesn't breathe his little breath on my forehead, his version of a kiss. He considers me. It's like he says "You. Are. A. Good. Human." & There are times that we really need that.

The moment she saw me, she jumped down from the chair that she was on and I sat down with her. The moment I sat down, she climbed into my lap and started grooming me and purring (VERY loudly!) then, when I went back for my shift the other day, I made sure to spend some time with her and I groomed her, and she purred very loudly (and also kept attacking the brush 😂)

That's smart bc cats can feel the barometric level drop, & they become wild-eyed & bonkers! My Mom & I, + her cat, survived a huge tornado on my 18th bday. The local weather service was down that night so there was no warning, & my mother & I had all the windows open + sliding glass doors to a balcony. She had a gorgeous lake view, but that night it looked like a ton of little explosions of light that could be seen through a massive storm. Apts & condos were getting completely leveled across the lake but we didn't know it yet. Pine straw needles were coming through the screens of our windows, & suddenly, the cat literally went insane! She was flying around from room to room, crying like crazy, all fluffed up, dashing from one hiding spot to another. Finally, we realized from HER behavior that something was very, very wrong! We shut the windows & doors, & sat together holding the cat until the freight train sound passed & the cat calmed down. The next morning, everything across the lake was leveled, just like everything in its path. We found out how we were spared - the tornado hit the water on the lake & literally jumped right over us! It was a miracle for sure!
Anyway, that's my tornado on my 18th bday story, the moral of which is to pay attention to your cat's behavior during severe thunderstorms - they can feel it, & will try desperately to warn their pet humans!

I enjoy your videos so much because it's obvious how much you love cats and understand them. I've watched other people's videos on cats and there are some that are pretty good, but yours are BY FAR the best and the most thorough!
I love all the sounds cats make and I especially love when I can have an actual back-and-forth conversation with them. But to hear two cats having a conversation with each other is one of the coolest things I’ve experienced. One night I woke up when two of my cats were having a conversation with each other! They were ‘twirring’ (this is the word I’ve always used) back and forth to each other and it was the cutest thing!
You’re absolutely right about cats having a palate of sounds!
My first cat, Sugar Puff (AKA “the love of my life”), a long-haired dilute calico who I had for 19 years, had an extremely interesting ‘twir’ that sounded like a grunt. Everyone in the family had conversations with her and she’d reply with her ‘grunts’ (‘twirs’)! I’ve never ever met another cat that’s made that same sound!
My other long-haired dilute calico, Daisy, (who lived to be 18 yrs) had 2 different ‘caterwauls’. (This was back in the 1970s before my parents had her spayed.) Daisy had a caterwaul ‘routine’ where she’d make 4 of the typical caterwauls, like what you demonstrated. She’d then pause for about 5 to 10 seconds before making an entirely different sound that I can only describe as sort of a punctuation! (It’s impossible to describe the sound she made, but I can still imitate it perfectly after all these years!)
Thanks for sharing all of your cat knowledge with the world. Please keep the content coming!

When I was little, I had two cats: Maggie and Mischief. They grew up together and were best friends but sadly Mischief was diagnosed with cancer young and passed away. For about three months after he died, Maggie would walk around the house (only when we weren't in the room, if she thought we could see her she wouldn't do it) but she would make this cross between a caterwaul and a yowl and it was just so heartbreaking to hear. We could tell she was looking for him and missed him...
It was really sad but, Maggie at the least lived a very long and happy life. She passed away at the ripe old age of 21 and was always treated like the queen she was. We ended up rescuing a kitten for her to have a buddy after we lost Mischief and, after a customary 500 hisses, her and Tallie became pretty good friends!

The best cat I ever had, beautiful traditional Siamese boy, trained me to play fetch with him. He'd carry his toy mouse to me, drop it at my feet, & stare at me, "chattering" non-stop w/ excitement, til I picked it up & threw it, so he could run & fetch it, & bring it back to me to throw it again...and again...and again. This show reminded me of the 6 month old feral cat tom I brought home from the pet crematorium when we went to get our 18 yr old cat's ashes. He slowly adjusted to life with our other three cats and of course never meowed until he'd been with us 3 years. My daughter and I were in the kitchen fixing their evening meal, all the other cats were meowing loudly when suddenly the purest, on pitch, soprano meow rang through the air. Everyone, cats and humans, turned toward him with surprise. He was looking around as if to figure out who made that sound too, when suddenly he let out another beautiful meow and then jumped about 3 feet into the air. It was such a foreign sound to him it scared him every time he heard himself make it. It was quite some time before he realized the sound was coming from him.

@@amazingabby25 yes he did, for 15 glorious years. I miss him so much. He had the purest, clear, perfect high A to C meow that would stop everyone, humans & animals, in mid step. He was found at the age of 6 months dumpster diving for food behind a red lobster by the owner of our local pet cremation company. A man who would drive to your home, sit and talk with you about your loved one who'd just passed and would ever so gently placed them in a wicker basket and cover them with a small, soft blanket. We did become sort of a gentle joke among friends as the only people who went to pick up our dead cat at the pet crematory and also came home with a live one.

I was told from a friend that studied cats for a few years, that the chattering sound when they're looking at prey, is because of their instinctual reactions. Specifically, cats fangs do the most killing and the cats are well versed in how to insert their fangs into the prey's neck to disable the prey. So when the cat is looking at a prey, it causes them to exhibit their instinctual bites. Basically they're daydreaming about the kill and it makes their mouths move as they envision how to take down that prey.

I'm disabled, and I got my cat around the time I stopped working. I helped raise her and her littermates also, so I've had my cat her whole life. She's the most vocal creature I've ever encountered, and I'm 99% positive it's because I've been around her talking to her like a baby for her whole life. She even has a different tone for me and my flatmates lol, like a special tone just for me feels so special

I appreciate that you hit the nail on the head with "they are forever infantilized" by us responding to their meows. An interesting point to keep in mind when dealing with the animalhood of cats. Ferals, neighborhood cats, and indoor cats are not one in the same, and we should not expect them to behave the same.

Exactly! I got my little kitty when he was just 6 weeks old. I wanted an older kitten because I think it's better for them to stay with their mom for at least(!) 8-9 weeks, but the family that had the kittens wanted to get rid of the kittens ASAP. I became his replacement mom, and I love conversing with kittens, so we now have our own way of communicating. It's really funny to me when Jackson called them forever infantilized because nothing is more true, especially if you had your kittens young and they relied on you so much in the first few weeks.

I stole my cat from my ex-in-laws. They kept her outside wandering, rarely fed her, and used her as a kitten factory. Her last litter were all stillborn due to lack of nutrition. 💔
I got her fixed, and she caterwauls when she jumps off of high up places because it hurts to land. She got super fat after I kidnapped her because of previous years of starvation. Now we're working on weight loss for both her & myself. 😅

That trill is also a sound my cat makes if saying I reach out to pet her and she was napping or I sat down next to her and then reached out to pet her and she will trill. My friends have also noticed similar sounds with their cats, and we've nicknamed it the 'cat activation sound.' To me, it's a sound that seems like an acknowledgment of my presence and interaction with the cat, inquiring what I would like from them. So, it seems like it's more than just a cat's communication with kittens, it's also a kind of acknowledgment of human interaction. YMMV.

My 18 year old granddaughter moved in with me for her last year of high school. She brought a tiny, female kitten with her. As she grew up (the cat), she started chirping at birds and squirrels and other animals she saw outside the window, as many cats do. But the most unusual chirping she ever does happens when my granddaughter and I are speaking to each other, in my granddaughter's bedroom, for example. The two of us are in there, talking to each other, and then the now grown cat (who is also in the room with us) starts chirping at the two of us. It is a happy chirp. It is almost like she wants to join in the conversation. Or she is happy that the two humans she loves the best are communicating with each other. That's how we interpret it, and it always makes us so happy to hear it. It is just one of those "too cute" things that our cat fur babies do!

My girl Mini is spayed and she caterwauls when she is VERY UPSET as in the “I would like to speak to management as to why my food is not on time!!! This is outrageous” we used to hear it a lot more when we first got her and we rarely hear it anymore since we got a more reliable auto feeder. Our 2 year old boy Milo chirps/trills all the time to get us to follow him places or to tuck him under a blanket or to respond to us. That’s why his nickname is Trumpet because it sounds like a trumpet trill sometimes lol

    • @EliteSCM
      @EliteSCM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

I went through that last year. The young cat disapeared. The older one looked through the house for him and did the calling him out sound for days. It was not grieving. The older cat had a calling sound to where if young one was playing with mom or whatever he did he always rushed to the older cat uppon hearing that sound. Also after those few days of calling he started coming to my room. In and out like every 5 minutes. He did that before having the young one but not that often. It reached the point I could not stand it so after a few months I got another cat for him to have a new friend to play with. This one is a female and he rejected her at first, and even now after a year he plays with her but only cause she doesnt let him be. You can clearly see it's not the same for him but at least he doesn't stress me no more. I could not sleep at night because of him wanting to come to my room to pet him a little and then leave, coming back 5-10 minutes after for the same thing, doing this for like 30 times during night.

Now she's on special food and medication. The doctor didn't want to pronounce if she will live or not. He just said that we will see how her condition is in a month on the next check up. But this new food from vet shop, she doesn't want to eat it. So we have to force feed her little at a time. Seeing her letargic all the time breaks my heart. I hope we won't loose her too. :(

A friend, "A," was once at another friend's house, "B," where their cat had just had kittens. B brought out the kittens, who I believe had opened their eyes and started wobbling out into the larger nest area, for A to see and socialize with. A was doing just fine with the kittens, with Momma looking fondly on the scene, content and probably happy to be kitten-free for a moment, when A started meowing to the kitten she was holding. Momma took immediate offence at what A had said, and ran over and leaped into A's lap and reached up and swatted A on her cheek and mouth, then took her kitten away! It was like, "How dare you teach them THAT word!" A told us this story several years ago, and it just stuck with me.

I've seen cats make the caterwauling sound for other reasons, such as wanting to enter a room (usually with a person they want to see in it) but the door is closed, wanting to go outside, or dismay at toys getting trapped under furniture and being unable to get them out.
The sound seems like the purpose is for trying to get someone's attention (a cat or a human) because they need assistance with something they can't do on their own.

Thank you, because my boy cat does it, so Jackson's explanation didn't really apply lol but yes it's always when he wants to get at us from outside our room. Our friend was visiting once and told us our lil boi sat outside our door and put his mouth down at the crack under the door so he could yell even louder at us lol never seen that before

My cat does this pretty much every day! I have always assumed it's because she either wants attention, or probably more likely, she wants outside or in the garage.

My fixed male cat CONSTANTLY caterwauls.
He goes outside and caterwauls so loud the neighbors across the street will run outside thinking he's in a cat fight or hurt.
He'll get slightly away from the house and caterwaul as loud as he can into the distance.
When he heard the caterwaul on this vid he came running and started doing it right back at it.
He is very loud and is VERY vocal. But the caterwaul is his number #1 noise.
It's not even when he needs something, he'll go into the basement and do it. I've had him checked multiple times for anything that may be causing him pain.
Nothing, he's just a loud and huge boy that loves to sing hard enough to shake the windows.

I watched his show when I was younger, and I took to heart a lot of what he said when I grew up and got my own cats.
I've had people incredibly surprised at how sweet and well-behaved my cats are, like cats can't be loyal, social creatures. 😂 Thank you for impacting me so I could be a good cat mama, Jackson. I don't know what I'd do without my babies.

I had this happen with my boy Spyro. He helped me understand cats like no other cat could. That bond is such a special one and it's a shame not more people get to experience it. Once you have had a bond like that with a cat, it makes interactions with other cats easier and more rewarding

@@pamelablackshire Two of my cats are sisters, they turned 9 yesterday. One has a purr you can hear across the room when she is being petted, her sister has an inaudible purr.. I can barely feel it with my finger tips. Their Dad, who turns 10 the 15th of March doesn't purr at all, not even low vibrations. He just makes biscuits on my legs when he snuggles. I have had cats my whole life, I'm 64. They are each as different as you or I. I've been blessed by a natural understanding of these beautiful creatures. I have spent hours observing their behaviors. I know what Jackson said about their vocalizations is true and accurate. I'm glad he has opened the world of cats to so many people. I love dogs, I have had tons of dogs, but they seem to have so many people as advocates. Cats for some reason haven't had the positive press dogs get. I just think cat people are a little more introspective than pure dog folks. It's because cats do require us to be more thoughtful and mindful of them.

well this is mainy because cats are decendents from bigger species of apex feline hunters, as most of these bigger feline cats are independent and sole, but for dogs i'm sure you know they are decendents from the wild wolf and they survive and hunt in packs as it explains why they are more dependent than cats are, of course you can also say their dependency is based on how they were raised which is true.

Thank you Jackson Galaxy for helping us understand our kitties. Interesting story to share- We have a 2 year old spayed cat and while camping, if we had to leave her for a little while, we'd place a Nest cam (in front of our lit Wifi device) to ensure the camper had electricity. While playing back the video, we noticed she made the most pitiful sounds we've ever heard. She was CATERWAULING (just learned the term! lol). We felt it was like a call to us because we were gone, so I think they will make that sound for other reasons other than mating.

When you mentioned about accidentally trapping your cat inside your closet I remembered how my little sister accidentally did that to our new kitten. By chance I had to go to the bathroom later that night and heard meowing inside the walk in closet so I opened the door and there he was, little fur ball with big eyes looking at me like I just saved him from the jaws of a shark. He purred so loud and followed me in to the bathroom and refused to leave my side. He was SO happy 😂 he slept in my bed that night and wanted to cuddle the whole time. Didn’t get a lot of sleep but it was worth it, he was just too cute to refuse.

Back in the day, one of us accidently trapped the cat in the closet all day. He liked to sneak in and cuddle on the stuff at the bottom. When I got home from school I wondered where the cat was. He would always come greet me at the door. After a while I heard little muffled shuffeling sounds from the closet. Opened the door, and out ran the cat. He ran straight for the litterbox in the bathroom. When he was done, he xame back out and greeted me enthusiasticly.

LoL This man is probably a great partner with the patience and dedication he has. Great video!
