My baby boy, Pepper, of 15 years just passed away 10 days ago, but his favorite game was hide and seek. After having 30 cats throughout my life (mostly outdoor rescues) he was the only one who played that game. I hid around the door and peeked my head out and meow, then he would run up and I'd say "rarrr". He would then run away to hide again (not afraid, just re-setting) then waiting for me to jump behind a different wall and the game would continue. The absolute best pet, ever! I miss him so much. I see him and hear him, but he isn't there. He was my child as I cannot have children and I am so lost without him.
Hopefully you're going to get another kitty (or two) soon. If you got two kitties, your days would be so full of "kitty mischief" you'd hardly have time to think about Pepper.. And you'd laugh a whole lot too! Do it soon.
@@penniprater5571 Thank you! As it so happens, our neighbor abandoned their 8 month old cat and we rescued him. I brought him in on Thanksgiving eve 32°! and he has slept in my bed every single night since. God brought him to me and I am so blessed. His name is Tinsel as he is a strong, shining silver cat who picked me at the lowest point. We have saved each other.
They basically act like little children. Throwning things around, annoying their sibling, getting in the way, eating things they shouldn't, eating out of frustration. They aren't that different from us.
My cat and I literally both snack out of boredom and if it's safe to share and in moderation I share my "boredom snacks" with him, like my chicken wings. I have boneless bites and pull the meat from the middle with no bread out of a few for him and we just sit and eat chicken, or he fights the bird that likes to smash into our shop window repeatedly, and I egg him on and we'll both watch our own "tv" or play our own game essentially, or he and I cuddle when he's bored he'll come sleep by me and I'll pet him. We also play with a string I found that is technically supposed to be to measure pipes (they tied it up so I got him a long stick) He's not much of a chaser he just likes to fight things. Or occasionally since we're both kinda paranoid, at night we'll go play the "what was that noise" game and patrol the place where he'll follow me and I'll walk around the shop with the pepperspray in hand to make sure we're safe :P That one's not actually a mutual like fun activity we do when he or I are bored, we're just both anxious wrecks. though that last one is probably even further proof as to how much like us cats are. He gets just as worried by noises at night as me.
@@boocrimson7720 Thank you so much for your comment. Was having a meltdown and needed that badly. You saved me a lot of grief. 😌🤗 -Fellow anxious wreck
I've found they demand more of you than dogs, it is just that cats will take breaks whereas a lot of dogs are incessant. Cats are the still waters that run deep.
My cat always wants to play tag with me. Everytime she wants to play she'll stare at me until I stare back, she then runs away with a very cute sound (not meow) and "hide" behind anything while peeking at me with her enlarged pupils. It's so cute that I always end up being chased and chased her back, just like a fellow cat lmao
Me too except I hide. He comes finds me then I give that look and he runs so I run after him, then go back and hide. Lots of fun! Gets me off my butt too 🤣
When my cat wants to play she waits until I walk down the hall, comes up on her toes, arches her back, and does hop, hop, hop in front of me. So funny and irresistible!
My mom says that it sounds like I am in an abusive relationship because every time the cat does something 'bad', I always try to figure out what I did wrong. Cats are not malicious abusers, they only have so many ways that they can communicate!
Just wait till your furbaby decides to get your attention, I just hope that tugging on a mouth full of your skin doesn't startle you into getting tooth marks on your arm. My Wally has taken to doing that, and if i don't pay him enough attention for right then he will do it again. All the while he will purr if i give him head-rubs.
Same here! I have a few, one in each room my gal roams into. Fantastic. Works like a charm. One is open side up, so she can jump into, and two are open side on the ground that she can walk into and nestles. ❤
@@feedthecatplease that sounds great.. can you please send me the approximate sizes of all boxes? My cat is stray/ feral.. rescued her last week and all she likes is trees.. I live on a rented first floor apartment and it's difficult to leave her in the garden alone whole day.. fortunately, I have a small balcony and she is there most of day, bird watching and enjoying breeze..
"Critter" (my rescued 3 legged girl) instinctively knows when I'm really ticked n upset. Her favorite distraction, which is hilarious, is to be across the room, stare until I look at her then she turns Sideways, arches her back, tail straight up then makes 3 huge jumps at me! Gets me laughing every time. She did her job, made Mom feel better. She has several distractions depending upon how stressed I am. Amazing how tuned in they are!
Critter - Awesome name for what sounds like an awesome cat. lol a three legged cat doing a triple (hop, skip) jump; making me smile imagining it.I think 90% of all my cats have been rescued as well. I generally try not to give mine boring, mundane or typical names! As such I have, or have had cats called Quetzalcoatl aka Scootle, Tyrannosaurus Alan, Cupboard, Salem's Shadow, Ninja, Wobble, Little-Bit later aka Tripod (for obv, reasons), Dim-wit, Frodo and Pretty/Ugly, to name a few! :D
My boy is a rescue and has 3 legs but does everything his cat friend do. He does get out of breath by the time he's through playing. He's my world and I think he understands most of what I say. He doesn't wander off the porch when we sit out. He seems content to watch the wildlife go about their day. One thing he does every evening is catch a cricket to play with under my wheelchair! I guess he wants me to see he's having fun.
My cat will meow and meow and meow until I play with her. It’s a very distinct meow. Very different from her “I want food” meow or “mom I pooped please clean up my poop” meow. She knows how to be irritating and always ends up getting what she wants. Her feather toy. Lol
My cat never meows when she poop XD she actually hated me cleaning it, she would sit and fake that she’s peeing just so that i would leave, i now put a spray on top of me when i clean so she stopped doing that
Youling _Fozer yah my cat HATES when her litter box is full so every time after she poops I must clean it. Peeing is fine. But poop? She’ll leave it uncovered and stare at me until I clean it. It’s that type of stare where you FEEL it and if you don’t acknowledge it fast enough, she’ll start that VERY SPECIFIC meow to clean her poop up. That’s if the smell doesn’t hit you first! Lol! Cats are special and it’s so funny when you start to recognize their meows and/or body language.
Priscilla da Silva I have a Manecoon (Maincoon? I don’t know how to spell it) female her name is Juju and also a DSH her name is Pj and they are so different it’s crazy. Juju is the one that has very distinct meows for everything she does. She also has a meow for when it’s time for “brushes” and she, no joke, will go into the bathroom where the acoustics are louder so not even headphones will drown out it. She will sit on the counter, staring at herself in the mirror while meowing until you get up and do what she wishes. She wants her brushes only in the bathroom. On the bed? Oh no no, she’ll attack the brush. ONLY THE BATHROOM on her counter throne as she stares at the beauty of herself while you tend to her. 😂 she’s one of a kind. I’ve never had a cat quite like her and I don’t think I ever will. 🥰
Haha yeh my cat actually meows at me on the way to his tray to tell me he’s going to poop and he wants it gone straight away or he will just constantly try to cover it more and more
My friend's cat brings stuff to my friend when she is bored :D Like, a fork from the kitchen, a pen from the studio, even small pillows, and keeps stacking them up in the living room or the studio (depends on where he is atm), its super funny to watch :D but he trained the cat to bring the stuff back too, but she often mixes up what belongs where. Cats are so awesome!
I really needed this today. Thankyou. Im putting my hand up. Chronic depression and agoraphobia has made me a very boring, selfish but very very loving cat mom. I relied on my little girl too much. But! I know what I need to do, and we are starting to do lots of fun things together. Makes us both happy. I feel guilty.. she went through too much with me.
I hear ya!! I had a wonderful cat when I was a late teen/ young adult....after watching Jackson to prepare for new kittens to join our family, I have a lot of guilt for all the things I did wrong😔. All I can do is remind myself that “when you know better, you do better” and hope that she felt loved because she was!! ....what the heck...I’m crying now just typing this!!🙏
@@roxiepearl1 Yep... long ago when I got my 2nd cat, aged 2 months, I just dumped her on my 1st cat, who was 11 months old, like, "Here, have a baby sister!"- & thank heavens, there were no problems & they got on well, despite my ignorance!
I absolutely love Jackson for educating people about cats. They are so misunderstood. For those with cats in apartments maybe watch Kittisaurus or CreamHeroes TH-cam channels for ideas on keeping your precious kitties entertained🐈💕
@@ksc743 YES! Those vids have inspired me so much, & not just with ideas. & my cat's never paid attention to screens, but he's started watching these vids, maybe cos the cats are often in close-up. Very cute!
"boredom in our cats signals a job on our part as parents." that was beautifully said! I just got my first kitten and have been watching your videos to be the best cat dad I can be! Thank you for putting out this useful content and I hope the rest of your 2020 goes better than the beginning!
I've recommended Jackson's vids to a friend who's having litterbox problems with his new fur baby. I gave him 2 suggestions, and one was watching Jackson vids, but in the meantime to test out different types of litter bc there may be something about the type he's using that irritates her.
I come from a dog family, recently we inherited a 13 yr old Siamese then my daughter brought home a 3 mo old kitten! A friend told me about Jackson Galaxy. I have been watching and learning from him ever since!!!! Have to admit kinda loving being a cat mom!
Aw, I've had this video in my watch later list for months... felt pre-guilty so I never quite watched it. I knew you were a great guy, but man do you hit the right level of playfulness and seriousness for us cat parents to feel optimistic and action-oriented.
Jameson and I play hide and seek. So good to see comments that others play this same game with their cat. I love it when his eyes are dilated, ears are back and we peek behind things. I love this time together. My boy is only 3 yrs old and has the best personality.
7 month old Crystal Kitty, came into my life March 2020, perfect timing. She has helped me survive loneliness, laziness, and boredom. She learned to walk outside on a leash and she expects to go out morning and night. She's a joy for neighbors too! 😻
same! my cat Puff who was 10 months old came to me in March 2020, I found him on my gallery. He has taught me even more about the kitty world believe it or not, and I've had cats most of my life.
Just today I took my 1 yo kitty on her first leash walk outside! While my 12 yo boy chills by a bush 😄 They are the absolute best... I know exactly how you feel ❣️
Yikes! Make sure you do some kind of punishment for that first, then entertain a little later after the punishment has worn off so they don't have the connection between punch and play.

@@Dustandfuzz dogs are for ppl who want instant control lmao cats require a lot of patience, empathy and time. if u dont hv the energy for that, dont get a cat or even say shit abt them bc to us cat parents theyre worth all the trouble.
YAY you mentioned CAT TV - I started feeding birds to entertain my cats and Now I'm an obsessive bird watcher and my cats are never bored - heavily tinted windows helps coz we can see the birds and they can't see us - and they play with their reflections coming right up to the window - it's awesome
That's awesome! Fun for everybody 😊 (Edit: Always wondered how cat owners stopped birds from freaking out if they could see cats watching them so close - tinted windows is a great solution... or I guess maybe even window screens?
Interacting with your pet is not just a job it is a wonderful unique experience. There’s not many moments in your day that you can step away from the pressures and interact 100% with another loving being. That your cat is playful and physical just makes it that much more fun. I always do gymnastics with my cats and they love it. they are happy with strong bodies.
My cat threw tons of stuff off the shelf/fridge! I was at my wit's end. Then I noticed she had a bloody hole on her lip. I took her to the vet. She gets lip ulcers regularly. Once she got that taken care of an occasional item flew off of the shelf but not often. My other cat tipped her water bowl over all the time and it turned out to be cancer. I do believe cats can be bored but check them for medical problems too. They can't say " I am feeling sick!" either!
Very late to the party but your videos have been a godsend, Jackson. I have always been a fan of yours because I worked in an animal shelter during my entire teenage years and even though I didn't own a cat back then during those years (mom is very allergic to cats), I always appreciated them and loved learning more about them. Now I am 32 and the proud owner of a beautiful stray male that I named Morgan (at the time of naming, I didn't know how to tell if he was a male or female because he'd never show his butt to me). Your tips have turned this extremely scared stray who would bolt at any moments notice to one of my best friends! He appeared on my porch February 1st and in the span of 3 weeks, will now sit in my lap and let me pet him. Thank you so much for helping me understand cats better and to be able to bond with mine better.
My partner and I decided to expand our little family by adopting a cat, and your videos have been helping so much!! Currently preparing for their arrival soon and we’re super excited! 😊
Young kids? I'm an old kid and my boss knows to make sure not to give me time between projects. Last time I didn't have anything to do, I alphabetized his keyboard for him. Lol i always have something to work on and that's the way I like it.
I love it when he attacks my ankles when I’m starting to scream like “wow, you are so unexpected” and then run after one another through the whole house. It’s so fun playing hide and seek with your cat! 🐈
My cat and I play tag. But he doesn’t go for the ankles - he takes a flying leap and bear-hugs my leg, then takes off around the house. I generally run after him going “I’m going to get you! I’m going to give you big hugs!” but I usually let him get away. If he stops running, I scoop him for a quick cuddle and put him down again.
After noticing how much my cats like to hide in/play with boxes,I always keep them for those times when they're seeming bored. I pull one out of the cupboard or closet. Also noteworthy: Take an empty 10-40lb litter bag, open both ends, fold the edge back a little: instant tunnel! The younger kittens love this.
My adopted dog was originally raised in a barn with cats and absolutely loves them when we see them on walks. I was considering adopting a cat as an "easy" second pet and pal for the dog. Thank god I watched your videos first -- They're not easy pets at all! Thanks for talking me out of adopting a pet I wasn't ready to care for, and for making this dog person appreciate them so much more!
Hi~ think twice about adopting...we've had cats or kittens with dog(s) and they have a great time and also a great bond. Sometimes it's easier to have two...plus they keep each other busy and use each other for pillows! No pressure just a thought
@sarahb5464 I 💯percent agree with u. Please do not adopt a cat, unless u are willing to invest in another family member! As u found out they are just as expensive, worthy of ur time and so much more, the same as ur dog. To all of you who r encouraging her to reconsider just bc we have cats, she’s making a better choice than to dive into adopting a cat and then realizing their needs r just as complex as her dogs. It’s better she understands this now than have a problem cat later bc she wasn’t ready for the type of commitment cats deserve.💕🐾( btw, I am a cat “parent” to 2 wonderful cats that r now seniors. I’ve had them since they were born and they r now 15 years old.) So, yes, I think she’s being smart about her decision to not have a cat now.
Wow. That would be really weird for me. I've always had cats, multiple at a time. They have all been very chatty with us. Most of our males meow when they want to be fed or go out, but our females sit and converse with us 😁 Their "going to the vet" meow usually sounds anguished 😂😂
one of mine loves Tarja of Nightwish. just 1 or 2 songs and he'd be snoring. the rest are into Japanese rock. and as for me, I am knocked down by their cat music while they play around when theyre supposed to be the ones sleeping 😑
My girl has to have music every morning too! She swats me till I get up, she leads me to coffee, then desk. She sits and stares at me then. And then the computer. And then me. Computer. Me. ........ TH-cam. lol She loves Pentatonix most. And I love her most. Dang cat. lol
This was so insightful! I just took in my first (for real 100% my responsibility) kitty. I want to do everything right and give her the best possible living situation as she was re-homed from her original caretaker. She is amazing, bright, and friendly but I always want to give her the best life that I can. I'm loving (as another Jackson too haha) going through all these vids and being able to procure all the wisdom and knowledge chronicled here. Thank you so much for helping all of us kitty parents to be the best companions we can be to our feline companions!
Kate Apple Jackson told us to take our cats to the vet if they overgroomed or had other compulsive “over” behaviors because they could have physical roots.
My cat would overgroom last time he did this I took him to the vet there was no teeth issues but stress no kitty prozac but feline phermones feliway. Now again he is licking his back paws bald ...so might go to the vet again just in case
We adopted a cat who over grooms. The shelter vet thought he was allergic so he's on hypoallergenic food and an anxiety med. He is pretty chill and not hiding. We took him to a vet after we adopted him and the vet said we could try weaning him off the meds. We made a mistake and tried a new wet food as he wasn't eating the wet food we were given from the shelter. He enjoyed it, but poor fella bit and scratched himself all night. We will ask the vet if we can give him an antihistamine if he gets really itchy. We suspect his litter irritates his feet too as he's been licking his paws alot. On the hunt for a hypoallergenic litter too.
My kitten will huff at me if im not playing enough. It's hilarious and guilt -inducing enough to get me up immediately 🤣 I'm in the process of getting another cat for her to be buddies with.
@@AlexiHolford I know i just had a baby and got a kitten thinking she would be happy but nope after her friend died she just hasn't liked other cats since
My cat had licked his belly fur off because he was bored. Then I was told by my vet to put him on a leash to go outside. An he got so much better plus I had gotten him a buddy. I had Mango for 20 years. My vet used to laugh she had never examined a cat that poured during their exam. Thank U everything u are telling us to do is so much worth while my kids ate everything to me.
My tortie calucia sits in front of me and meeows in a monotone noise. As soon as i pick up her toy, so does a little skip - then prepares to attack her toy! She gets at least one hour playtime from 9pm - 10pm every night (her time not mine!) Then she comes over for a back brush and treatsys. We have done this since she was a kitten. Love mags
Margaret Kerr wow that’s a Long playtime, my cat an indoor and outdoor cat plays just up to 1 to 5 minutes than he lies on the floor and doesn‘t move anymore and he is out of breath after some minutes playing. But Im got told that cats that can go outside doesn’t want to play that often, because they have outside so much so play with and I too play with hin outside in the garden with sticks and he loves that he loves that but even there not for a long time. He is 9 Years old and I got him when he was 7 Years. He just meows on the window if he wants to go outside or sometimes tries so wake me up in the morning if I am sleeping for to long like until 12 o clock or something. 😂 And for some reason he is super scared of feather toys, he uses a toy stick with stings and he loves Baldrian cushions, so I buy him every month a new Baldrian cushion, with this thing he can play alone very good. Only a few times he brought me the play cat teaser, if he wanting to play long with it, just wanting me moving it, without any movement for him, but that’s sometime I don‘t want to do for an hour, if he doesn‘t want to hunt it and just want to look. 😂🐈💖
My Cats will all of a sudden do what I call "kitty Olympics" they'll start going/running around the house all fast and they'll go round and round for like 5min and then they'll all of a sudden stop and be chill
My cat likes to venture into cabinets and closets when she’s bored. I often see doors open when I awaken or come home! Sometimes I feel like I live with a raccoon, just how she can open and get into things!!!
I really hope our kittens will learn how to open cabinets. I've lived with cats before who could do this. I just want them to be self sufficient enough to express themselves as they wish. 😁
Mine learned to lock herself in the bathroom on purpose so she can meow to get attention being rescued. 🤣 I had to stop petting her after to limit the habit.
I can imagine you playing these toys when you were in kindergarten and looking up (as you did in the video) to your teacher when she/he asked what you were doing.
Hi Jackson, I used to play with my two cats with a laser once a day (at night before their dinner) and took your advice and now play three times a day and they responded well to this. They love this new routine during the day.
one thing I notice with cats is there's a bite that they use that doesn't hurt when they play and a bite that hurts when they are serious and its how I differentiate when my cat is just playing or agitated that goes for scratches too
Both cat sexes get the zoomies. But i have witnessed a bro cat trying to get at his sis. My friend had one, i had the other. We thought it would be cute to reunite them later on. It was... Not so cute. My bombay looking cat wasnt having it. Her brother looked like a the breeds name escaped me. The asian kind, yeah, them. He was white w/ blue eyes. 😔 I still have pics of them as babies too. Poor sis smelt him like hey 😭💔, i missed you. Glad to see you again 😍🤗. Its been a while. To, no, you nasty mother fucker! I will not make out w/ you. Cat slap. That dude loved hunting. I mean, not just his sister. But he really brought animals back home. Like dead birds & sh. Where my friend would be surprised not even intiatially aware of where they came from
I'm sure jackson has touched upon this elsewhere (because I'm pretty sure I learned it from him), but if your usually calm/loving cat randomly attacks you and shows genuine signs of aggression (and you can potentially rule out play aggression), it may be because he/she is is pain or dealing with a health issue. this happened to me with my buddy Bear, and I took him to the vet to see if anything was wrong, and it turns out he had a tooth in the back of hi mouth that was infected and causing him a lot of pain. he's all better now :D
I love my cat so much and I would do literally anything for him. I spent a lot of time with my cat, but he seems bored pretty often which bothers me, because I don’t know what is happening and want him to be happy (his parents were street cats I have him since he was 3 weeks old). -I comb his fur twice a day (morning&evening) - he loves it - We play daily with his toys - He goes to the balcony several times per day - I put a bird food on our window so he can watch the birds -I catified our apartment: he has a big cat tree, window bench, access to our shelves - We cuddle him nonstop - He cooks with me (and tastes the meat if I cook some) - He is given treats for giving me his paws And still there is some playing aggression, meowing and boredom. I am wondering if it can be in his roots (maybe bored that he is a flat cat without garden access)?
It certainly could be a lack of garden access. I grew up with farm cats, who never displayed boredom to us as they had so much space to explore and enjoy, but I now have an apartment cat and the experience is totally different. She needs almost constant attention to not be bored.
I'm always so appreciative of what I learn from Jackson. This was the exact video I needed to see and it's helping me figure out what all I can do to alleviate my cat Fairy's occasional boredom. Thank you, Jackson!
“I’m working too much” - well yeah. And my safety net to remind me when it’s time to log off is the cat coming to ask why we haven’t gone outside yet today. Sorry guys, gotta go, figure it out yourselves - time to take the cat for his walk before it gets dark. ❤️
Oh my cat is bored. She hasn't attacked my ankle yet. When I'm in the kitchen she brings me the ball. Not a good combo, so I have to wash my hands after a throw the ball. I "guess" she figures is the only play time I have with my servant and force her to play. I FEEL SO SAD AND GUILTY NOW!😭😭😭 I just been so lazy and down lately 😧😧🥴🥴 I'll definitely play with her more. Thanks Jackson! You are the best! 💯💗💗💗👏👏👏👏👏
I can understand that feeling. My cats help by getting into things to remind me" I'm still here Mom " Funny thing is playing always makes me feel better too but I forget that when life gets crazy. Take care
I also accidentally trained my Void Boi that cooking time is playtime (waiting for something to brown/crisp up? perfect time for a round with the feather toy!) Now he drags me his toy and screams at me while I'm making dinner. whoops.
I’m glad that I found this video. My cat especially very social, and I always want to make sure he’s getting enough attention to help stimulate his mind.
thank you so much for saying it like it is! I love it. people need to hear this and to learn how important it is for the cat to have a good life. and that's means connecting and mentally and physically stimulating.
Jackson, do you think you could talk about how to help cats who have been traumatized? We just adopted a 3 year old cat from a high kill shelter in NYC and we did know that he was “a difficult case” because of how much he had deteriorated while at the shelter. he was on the shy side to begin with so being at the ACC didn’t help him. his past owner unfortunately passed away to the COVID-19 pandemic, and once at the shelter his bonded sister was adopted out, without him. He rapidly became closed off and no longer interacted with the staff at all. (They also had to use a huge net to get him out of his cubby everyday to clean it ect....I think this probably made him feel out of control.) We have provided him with a cat igloo and a jungle gym as well, and he enjoys when treats are hidden so he can find them as well. But, he usually refuses to leave the closet for most of the day.....we took away the unders for our bed so he has decided the closet is safe....but is this really good for him? we are trying to build his confidence and he is doing massively better than before but obviously he can’t live in the closet forever and he deserves to meet his big brother and have an enriched life! do you have any good tips of how to acclimate traumatized cats to new experiences/environments, and is there anything that you should NEVER do when you have a cat with a traumatic past? We know he likely will never love strangers or greet friends at the door like our other boy but he deserves to find himself whoever that is! I want him to feel comfortable coming out of the closet and not going back, but obviously don’t want to add to his anxiety! we have had him almost three weeks and he and his brother can still really not meet because Prance typically won’t come out of the closet for food for at least an hour or two later and by then our other cat Trot has already finished most of his food......we are at a crossroads and I’m hoping for some guidance on the next steps to take with our kitties!
I watched a TH-cam video about a traumatized cat. She didn't let herself even be touched for three months, let alone leave the safe room. With that cat it seemed important to build relational trust and safety and to be very patient. When we bought this house with a traumatized elderly cat living in it, it took time for him to trust and even longer to bond. His family had died of old age, six months apart. One had spent six months in a care facility first. The cat has a cat flap with a neighbor feeding him, but otherwise he spent SIX months alone thinking he had been abandoned. So he was wary of loving again. It takes time for hearts to heal. Cats are amazingly like us. They can be afraid to bond, fearful of separation, and angry when you leave and the come back. It's very unfortunate the shelter separated the two cats. Sad.😢
That shelter should have known better than to adopt out his bonded half. I'll bet that other cat had some difficulty adjusting, too, no longer having its best friend furever. For yours, I am no expert but I would be putting his food and litter box near the closet and keep the bedroom (I assume its in a bedroom) door closed until he's eaten his food. Try to spend time with him. Even if its just time chilling quietly in your room while he hides. He'll gradually start coming out and get used to you, but any sudden movement (reaching out to pet him) may send him running to hide again. I had one shy boy who hid a lot, but he'd come out while I was asleep and sniff me, sometimes I'd wake up to the tickles of being sniffed or him petting himself with my hand. (Sometimes an arm dangles out of my bed while I sleep; I guess my hand looked inviting cuz he'd rub his head on it which woke me up.) He may have kitty depression along with PTSD, as he's been through a lot in a short time and has no way to comprehend it like we do, you cannot explain to him "Your old human died and the shelter did you dirty by letting your best friend leave without you. You did nothing wrong." as we don't speak the same language. Its probably going to take a few months and a lot of patience. Once he realizes you new-to-him humans are safe, and the bedroom is safe, he'll slowly start exploring the rest of the home. As he starts to explore the new home, he'll probably start to watch the other cats from a safe distance and run to hide if one approaches him. There may be some hissy growly swats if he feels cornered by them. Again, this will be a build-up process that takes time. By this time next year, he should be more himself. I hope you'll post an update sharing what worked and what didn't work. The hard work will be worth it that first time he warms up to some lovins and rewards you with his purrs 💖
I'd suggest giving him the time he needs. We have 2 rescues who were found in a trashbag with their siblings as kittens. When we got them one of them was extremely shy and scared of people (except for his foster parents) and would hide under the cabinet and only come out when no one was there. After a few weeks he started coming closer and even letting us pet him from time to time. It took him a couple months to really come and cuddle with us and years to not be too scared around strangers. He is still very shy and when there's more than 4 strangers he tries to avoid them. But with us he is the cuddliest cat I know. It just took time and patience. But I also know that your situation is different and probably much more difficult. Our cat had his brother and he saw that he was okay not hiding and playing with us. He was also much younger and probably less traumatised. But I guess giving him time and being patient would still apply. I hope I could help you a little bit and I wish you good luck with your kitties!
Gypsy Woman yes! The shelter did do him kinda dirty! One of his shelter picks shows him with his sister cuddling! Our other boy did get to see him today (we have been giving treats and cuddles to our other baby in front of him to show we are safe ect) Our new baby is extremely gentle and sweet but like I said sometimes I will find him just sitting staring at us in the middle of the night but sometimes I find him plastered to the back of the closet, he’s definitely curious but I can tell he expects bad things to happen he’s still very vigilant even when he walks around the room. thankfully our other cat has been playing nice mostly.... does cry at the door a lot unfortunately I think he probably knows he’s on there.
I know all this stuff and still keep watching. Idk why, but I really enjoy your content. Thanks for keeping your platform going. This is better than TV because we can cast, we can find need specific content, and we have the entire library to go through. We really appreciate you, Jackson. Goad to see you have merch now too!
Our kitty "misbehaves" when she wants attention. She's like bad at it though, not destructive at all. "See this pen on the table? Now it's on the floor. Whatcha gonna do about it?" Like, kitty, I dun care about the pen, have at it. And if that doesn't work she'll go to sleep. Of course, it doesn't that often, especially since we started taking her out in a harness. We also put a net on our balcony so she can hang out there. We also got a bird feeder in the kitchen window. And a million wand toys. No wonder she doesn't ruin our stuff lol.
Oh how funny! Our cat will do that, break the "rules" to get attention. Grab the charger cord, poke at the trash, knock the pen off the desk. He looks right at me with that angelic look, I say DON'T, then he sneaks and does it. I always smile to myself and say "Dennis the Menace is in the house"
Sorry to be clueless, you can get a harness for cats to walk them outside like a dog? Curious cause my kitten is about 6 months and wanna let her out when she's a bit bigger but obviously nervous. Had her in the garden a few times but that makes me nervous too.
@@deekdouglas3055 Absolutely! But, I trained my cat indoors with the harness first, to make sure that she was confident and comfortable before taking her outside. Last thing you'd want is a protesting cat slipping out of the harness. I think Jackson has a video on harness training, check it out =)
@@TintinSilver Thank you so much, I had no idea that was a thing. Looking up the video now. It's an awesome idea. Even taking her to my cousins to catsit which is only a 2min walk away she could walk to hers rather than be in her carrier which she tolerates but can tell she's not really fond of.
Wow you are amazing. I agree with everything you say. I feel like a cat whisperer as well. 4 cats all different personalities and your advice is spot on about boredom.cats need to play hunt.its a need.
2:57 We usually call this the "gravity enforcement officer" duties, and both our calico cats love to do that when we are sleeping. One often curls up behind my knees to sleep at night but has decided that 3 AM is time to wake up, the other usually starts a bit later.
I used to have a cat who I discovered would wait for his brother to exit the litter box to pounce (causing some litter box anxiety for the other kitty - which I was able to resolve by moving the litter box to an area I frequented more). These two typically snuggled and groomed each other so I was flabbergasted as to why this happened. I assumed the other kitty was more alpha. Thank you for this video, now I know this is most likely due to boredom and a warning sign I am not keeping my cats stimulated enough. Thanks, Jackson!
Thanks Jackson for this video! I'm tired of Hollywood portraying cats as aloof and unloving/selfish.. People just don't want to read between the lines, they're more like us than dogs are.
You are spot on, I've noticed that cats are like children. They need stimulation for healthy growth and maturity. My cats are 95 percent outside barn cats. They come in at their discretion and leave the same way. They get attention and they actually knock on the door. They want out they go to the door and look at you to open it. Cats are very intelligent and very good at taking care of you by hunting and protecting your property from other animals. If you let them work they are happy. Cats are very good workers that keep pests and intruders away day and night. Great video and very truthful.
Jackson, thank you so much for making these videos! I just brought home my very first cat yesterday! 1yr old Siamese female named Blue! Watching your videos has given me confidence as a new cat mom! Your videos are honest and educational, we love'em! Thanks for all you do! -Angel & Blue
Thank you. I’ve learned so much from you. I can’t believe I thought of myself as a genuine cat person and yet I know so little. No wonder you’re the Cat Daddy!
My cat? Yeah she uh...doesn't do anything. She lays around, sleeps, eats, and poops. Like that's it. If she meows, she wants food or into a room. She rarely makes noise, and her meows are very quiet. She's also a rather weird cat. I love her, but she is definitely different than most. She loves belly rubs, sleeping on your head, cuddling you and grooming you. She also only likes it when I feed her, not one of my 6 other family members, including her owner, my girlfriend. No, it must be I that cleans her litter box, feeds her, pets her, cuddles with her. She's also old...well getting there she's 10 years. I love my little Sophia baby
@@MojiBeau ooooo precious old baby ❤❤ I know yours can make it to 20! 😤 my grandmother's cqt made it to 21, even though it was barely an inside cat, which is so crazy because the vets believed she wouldn't make it past 15 wih her health issues but she made it way past that, I know your baby can make it there 😤😤
My 9y spaniel is very territorial and doesn’t let the 14y cat move too quickly around the house. Lately, I’ve noticed the cat goes into the basement, which is fully finished but unused, and starts crying likes something’s terribly wrong. I’ve learned it’s his way of saying, “I want your love and attention without the meanie-head brother around.” I’ve started leaving some toys down there, and sure enough, they’re on the move! And of course, I make sure to play with him down there more now, too.
My cat's favorite event is linen day. The day I take all the covers off the bed and wash them is the event of the week. It takes 3 times as longer than if Friday wasn't "helping" but she makes me laugh the whole time. I have learned. . . and so has she that, the most important part of linen day, is starting it with a nail clipping.
Thank you jackson, my cat that was stressing me out so much even though I love him, fits perfectly into this description. So I started playing with him daily and provided him with much more furniture and Enrichment and now we finally get (a few more hours of) sleep and he totally behaves. Even started walking him which I'm grateful for because he just gets so excited for it.
I have been binging a bunch of these videos because we just adopted two kittens (6 mos old). I've volunteered at a rescue for the last 5 years, and had cats for the first 25 years of my life, but I am learning so much! Thank you for posting all these. Your lessons really resonate with us and the cats appreciate it. We have one wallflower/traumatic past kitty and he shows improvement every day! Looking forward to finally getting our adventure cat a cat backpack because she has definitely got the mojo and raring to go. I watched this particular video for her. But I saw some small things that could also be applied to our shy boy. Anyway, keep posting and I'll keep watching. Such a service for animals. ❤❤❤😻😻😻 Thanks, Jackson. P.S. I always do the slow blink I love you with both my cats, but last night, the shy boy did it right back so clearly for the first time. 😊😊 My heart.
My wife and I really appreciate this video and all of your others and just you in general Mr. Galaxy. This particular video has greatly enlightened me on dealing with one of our kitties “Lucifur”. And we actually named him before we knew his personality (or what we thought was his personality). We actually thought we jinxed ourselves haha. Anyway, thanks much for the help!!
LOVE your humor! Im a cat LOVER and have a "Bottle Brat" as my vet calls her. Found her at approx 2 weeks old (per vet) She is VERY spoiled and happy! Thanks for the vids.. They're great!
We had one cat, then I started watching your videos; we now have two new adopted kittens. OMG, best decision we ever made! During this, "lockdown", they force me to get up and clean house, and learn how to have fun again. Thank you for showing how simple a catio can be to make. Never thought I would ever have fun being in the house all day! I cannot thank you enough!
The light reflection on your glasses keep making me laugh. It’s when you look up and it looks like the springy eye ball toy glasses...i wish i made it make sense hahha
Thank you so much for this video!I'm a first time kitten/cat owner and I'm still learning what my cat is trying to tell me!!! I've only just figured out 3, and have started paying with her more to try and alleviate her boredom. She's been showing 4 for a bit, but when I make an effort to play with her more she stops.
My cat, Maggie, likes watching me play with her toys. It starts with me playing with her toys after she makes it known she’s bored. So as I start, she’ll go lay somewhere and watch. Then my arm gets tired especially when it seems she doesn’t want to play. So, whenever I stop, she’ll run back to me and meow her head off. I give in and start to play with her toy again, she goes back to laying down and watches again. Good work out though haha
Good point
they really arent different from us, yet theyre so missunderstood :/

A lot of people think cats are like house plants... nooo.. no! They need a TON of attention and play time, esp when young.
I love on my Cleopatra until she gets tired of being loved on. She usually doesn't tho.
Yikes! My kitten is doing all of this and I didn't know getting a kitten would be so much work. It's like having a child.
They r not food?
+Maureen ganaway maybe u could get ur kitten another friend like a puppy or another kitten or cat u know they can entertain each other!
I do the same with my 😺 cat 🤣
SAME HERE W MY BABY! It’s his favorite game
This is the best game, but can be scary when you peek around the corner because he might be right there like a jump horror game
That is so adorable, I wish that my sweetie would do that, he can use the exercise!
I am the same. If I get scratched, I know I did something wrong. It is usually my fault.
If I notice my cat is bored, I just give him a box... and his whole day is booked
I have given her a box but she doesn't seem interested! What size box? And what position should I keep in for her to get attracted?
Same here! I have a few, one in each room my gal roams into. Fantastic. Works like a charm. One is open side up, so she can jump into, and two are open side on the ground that she can walk into and nestles. ❤

Haha I laughed reading your post..thanks Critter 😂
My cat does that too! It's very distinct from other meows! I've never heard of other cats doing that! 🤣🤣🤣 nice to know I'm not alone!
Lol that's soooo cute
we need video proof LOL :)
One of my old cats used to play fetch with her mouse toy when she wasn't playing volley ball with it.
Our youngest rescue do this as well, all the stuff she steals from me and then she want to play fetch

Thank you so much for helping me understand cats better and to be able to bond with mine better.
My partner and I decided to expand our little family by adopting a cat, and your videos have been helping so much!! Currently preparing for their arrival soon and we’re super excited! 😊
Your business partner? Ah huh!
It's so funny about the mischief part, being an English teacher of young kids, kids are exactly the same way.
Young kids? I'm an old kid and my boss knows to make sure not to give me time between projects. Last time I didn't have anything to do, I alphabetized his keyboard for him. Lol i always have something to work on and that's the way I like it.
Cats behave better. Lol
I do too!.. We take turns chasing each other 🥰
After noticing how much my cats like to hide in/play with boxes,I always keep them for those times when they're seeming bored.
Aww cats are amazing animals you should definitely adopt one , you won't regret it.
@@lisavineyard348 Yes...cats are amazing!!!I got cats and dogs, one of my orange cats loves the dogs more than the other cats he lives with!!!lol!!!🤣🐱🐕
There are no "easy" pets. They all need attention and love. But I'd say cats are a bit easier than dogs. Mostly because you don't have to walk them 😅
@sarahb5464 I 💯percent agree with u.
My kitty has a cute meow, but she only meows twice a year, and that is when we go to the vet.
it's funny how some cats almost never talk, and some cats never shut up. lol.
Wow. That would be really weird for me. I've always had cats, multiple at a time. They have all been very chatty with us. Most of our males meow when they want to be fed or go out, but our females sit and converse with us 😁 Their "going to the vet" meow usually sounds anguished 😂😂
@@elleemann I think she only Meows twice a year because I talk to her all the time, so she does not need to Meow unless we go see the Vet.
My cat relaxes and sleeps when I play him Mongolian throat singers. He's weird.
one of mine loves Tarja of Nightwish. just 1 or 2 songs and he'd be snoring. the rest are into Japanese rock. and as for me, I am knocked down by their cat music while they play around when theyre supposed to be the ones sleeping 😑
@@lune7532 hahahaha, that's pretty awesome!! My cat does not like metal at all, it's my first one I'm fascinated by every little thing he does!
My girl has to have music every morning too! She swats me till I get up, she leads me to coffee, then desk. She sits and stares at me then. And then the computer. And then me. Computer. Me. ........ TH-cam. lol She loves Pentatonix most. And I love her most. Dang cat. lol
@@alanale mine doesn't like metal either! Or rock for that matter. She likes reggae, especially Bob Marley 😂
It's all about the natural frequencies. Namaste
My kitten really loves when we go on walks in her backpack :)
I have a stroller for pets that have a cover so they can't get out🤣 it's so cute😍
omg yes
My cat used to over groom when she had a skin rash, and would over chew when she had a tooth abscess. So guys take em to the vet!!
Citrine42 lol what does this have to do with the video tho
My cat does this thing where she likes to attack her tail when she sees it at the end of a chair. She is so silly
She’s bored
@@AlexiHolford I know i just had a baby and got a kitten thinking she would be happy but nope after her friend died she just hasn't liked other cats since
ajh2558 - you can play with her. She doesn’t need another cat to play and be entertained.
Mine does that too
I have a cat that is almost 21 years old and she still plays hide and seek with me.
So wonderful to see cat/human relationships which manage to last that incredibly long! 💞
Love mags
awww :3
Exact same play time for my 2 cats :D
My Cats will all of a sudden do what I call "kitty Olympics" they'll start going/running around the house all fast and they'll go round and round for like 5min and then they'll all of a sudden stop and be chill
that's typical cat behavior if they don't have enough energy outlets during the day. Their way to get rid of the build-up energy
Zoomies
Thunder kitties.
c dd or when they just ack like psychos sometime
5 minutes? Mine do that every morning and it goes on for about 3 hours starting at 4AM.
@@sketchur be careful with what you ask for
Mine learned to lock herself in the bathroom on purpose so she can meow to get attention being rescued.
They love this new routine during the day.
one thing I notice with cats is there's a bite that they use that doesn't hurt when they play and a bite that hurts when they are serious and its how I differentiate when my cat is just playing or agitated that goes for scratches too
That explains why my male cat suddenly starts hunting his sister and gets the zoomies
LuisoftheLion same
Both cat sexes get the zoomies.
-I comb his fur twice a day (morning&evening) - he loves it
- We play daily with his toys
- He goes to the balcony several times per day
- I put a bird food on our window so he can watch the birds
-I catified our apartment: he has a big cat tree, window bench, access to our shelves
- We cuddle him nonstop
- He cooks with me (and tastes the meat if I cook some)
- He is given treats for giving me his paws
And still there is some playing aggression, meowing and boredom.
I am wondering if it can be in his roots (maybe bored that he is a flat cat without garden access)?
Cats always need attention
It certainly could be a lack of garden access. I grew up with farm cats, who never displayed boredom to us as they had so much space to explore and enjoy, but I now have an apartment cat and the experience is totally different. She needs almost constant attention to not be bored.
I think its time to get him a kitten as a cat friend . U need to introduce them the right way tho. And may be walking them would help
We have a cat that is similar. How is your cat doing now? Anything you've learned?
I'm always so appreciative of what I learn from Jackson. This was the exact video I needed to see and it's helping me figure out what all I can do to alleviate my cat Fairy's occasional boredom. Thank you, Jackson!
Great video, Jackson! So, basically, cats are bored, since mine do just about everything you've mentioned. They are worth the effort!
I've always enjoyed you on cable TV and now on TH-cam. You have taught me so much I truly appreciate it.
My baby brings me his ball when he is ready to play fetch. Must be a tuxedo thing.
Ana Contreras my black does that as well lol
One of my tuxedo's plays fetch :) The other 2 don't though :(
Our tux plays fetch but with ribbon balls maybe if she can't find any ribbon
I find toys in my bed when I wake up hahaha
My tuxedo plays fetch too!! 🥰
Love you Jackson and your wonderful cat mojo, cats of the world unite!
Thank you! ❤️
Take care
@@mary-anneswanson9931 Yes is definitely crazy! Likewise! Thank you!
I also accidentally trained my Void Boi that cooking time is playtime (waiting for something to brown/crisp up? perfect time for a round with the feather toy!) Now he drags me his toy and screams at me while I'm making dinner. whoops.
@@Kat-u1d Yes this is what I did too. And I can't seem to stop it because I feel bad she always brings me the ball so I just go along🤗🤗
Yes 10 week old Mocha “helps” us with everything. He’s in the dryer, dishwasher, laundry basket, etc. He’s a toddler, gotta explore.
Everytime I go hiking I bring something for my cat, like a little stick or something he can play with and discover the sent it has. He loves it!
(They also had to use a huge net to get him out of his cubby everyday to clean it ect....I think this probably made him feel out of control.)
We have provided him with a cat igloo and a jungle gym as well, and he enjoys when treats are hidden so he can find them as well.
Gypsy Woman our boy also likes to explore at night when it’s the most quiet! he has come up to the bed too a few times at like 2am
@@momkatmax haha how adorable 😂💕

My kitty turns 18 next month, your kitty’s not too old yet!

My cat is the same. She's a lazy little butthole lol
Cat behaviors, including the naughty ones, are so amusing and cute, just adorable and darling! 🥰🥰🥰
I'm so happy to see I understand my cat and that I'm reading his signs correctly ^^
Sorry just have to say right from the start...LOVE the hat hahaha!
I love how the lights reflected on Jackson’s glasses at 6:43
The light reflection on your glasses keep making me laugh. It’s when you look up and it looks like the springy eye ball toy glasses...i wish i made it make sense hahha
My cat goes insane during playtime. I've never seen a cat do a somersault to get a toy... Until yesterday.
I LOVE that cats meow at us because they want our attention 😃❤️
My cat, Maggie, likes watching me play with her toys.
It starts with me playing with her toys after she makes it known she’s bored. So as I start, she’ll go lay somewhere and watch. Then my arm gets tired especially when it seems she doesn’t want to play. So, whenever I stop, she’ll run back to me and meow her head off. I give in and start to play with her toy again, she goes back to laying down and watches again. Good work out though haha
Same! My cat doesn't like to play so much as she likes to watch ME play 🤔
My one cat does that in the summer when it's hot. He'll spend time just watching me wiggle his feather but won't come attack :)
Maggie throws a fit when I stop. She runs up to me and throws tantrum meows until I pick up the toy again. Hahaha
Omg my cat does the same! He’ll play for a little then he’ll get tired or bored and lay down and watch me play 😩
Oh my God! That is hilarious.
