"Flowers of War" The chinese soldiers has german equipment because they were part of the German trained divisions were the elite-quality, best trained and equipped infantry divisions in the Republic of China's National Revolutionary Army trained under Sino-German cooperation from 1926 to 1941
If people din't know, that's the infamous 88th Infantry Division of the NRA (National Revolutionary Army) and was one of the most well-trained unit of the entire NRA forces that was trained by the Germans. Before the Japanese invasion, China and Russia was in good terms and were often given arms and such. However when Chiang thought it was a good idea to rid the CCP once and for all, he riled up the Soviets and soon they pulled out in supporting and sending arms towards China. That left the KMT in a pickle and somehow along the way, Nazi Germany was just rising and need cash to revitalize their economy and what better way was to sell arms to one of their biggest exporter since the time of the Kaiser and that's China. When the Nazis realized that Chiang has the same common goal of ridding the Communist as much as they do, not only did they sell them weapons enmasse, they also picked up the idea to help in training the NRA soldiers and along the way, 22 infantry divisions were sent to Germany in and all came back very well-trained in the German standard. When Japan invaded, Japan wasn't in the triparte act thus Germany continued supporting China along the way by sending helmets, guns, ammo and even had their military advisor to Chiang, Falkenhausen stay in China and continue assisting Chiang with this "New Army". Chiang was told to use them sparingly and only send them out as a breakthrough force by Falkenhausen but with the situation being desperate as the Japanese were overruning all Chinese positions from Shanghai (Chiang had already lost 2 German trained divisions in Shanghai with one even involved in the infamous Sihang Warehouse battle) to the outskirts of Nanking, Chiang still believed these forces were to be tossed in and fight hard to defend the city. Turns out, Chiang was wrong and that's how the lore of these German trained Chinese soldiers that have the ethos of "Not one inch closer for the Japanese" came about and how enraging it was for Chiang's military commanders to watch their best troops die in the slaughter when they could have kept them back and wait for a chance for them to strike a weary Japanese army.
Also Hitler made the worst move ever. China was in the same pact under "Anti-Comintern pact". The one who actually betrayed the whole pact was Japan. Germany abandoned China for Japan is when US got full green light to invade Germany. He made the biggest mistake in history was trading China for Japan and declaring war on US after Japan in attack Pearl Harbour. Japan was already on its own by the time the war started. No one trusted the Japs more than Germany. When Germans went for Japs. Everyone knew who should be destroyed first. He first planned for US to join Germany, then he went against it. Basically who ever goes against China is usually an enemy to the world by that time.

The Japanese Imperial army, at least, despite being known for their sick perversion and cruelty were devoted to their own people and event went as far as to commit mass suicides just to keep the Allies away from their mainland. On the other hand you have the Chinese who at the same time period flooded and drowned thousands of their own people just to win the war. Such loyalty and heroism! Truly the way of a Chinese hero! LOL! I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out the reason the Chinese fought so hard against the Japanese weren't because of empathy and sorrow, but because of intense racism - that their pride got crushed when the people they, for the longest time, considered to be inferior dwarves invaded them and they couldn't fight back. As their famous Sun Tzu said, If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the dwarves so off to the meat grinder you go, my gullible Ling monkeys.
@@Kevin-kn6uq That's... Not really the case. Chiang's purge of the Communist isn't because he found the Soviets useless and din't need them because "China was strong enough" but because the CCP was sowing discord amongst the alliance. Before the actual 1927 purge, the CCP had already caused chaos for the KMT and the Zhili clique warlords who controlled Shanghai at that point back in 1925 during the May Fourth Incident. Chiang had personally saw how much chaos these Communist could do and with him just gaining power in late 1926, he can't have these people right in his backyard trying to create chaos and potentially wrest power from him. It also din't help that he found out that Wang Jingwei, the actual defacto leader at that time of the KMT had worked behind Chiang's back and tallied up with the right-wing members to oust and coup Chiang which ironically Chiang found out about. Then what gave Chiang the ultimatum to get rid of the thorn (the CCP) once and for all was how the CCP took Shanghai down themselves. When the Communist wing of the alliance heard about the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) marching towards Shanghai in an attempt to oust the Zhili Clique once and for all, they started an armed uprising led by Zhou Enlai and Chen Duxiu and they indeed kicked the warlord army's ass and claimed Shanghai. When the NRA forces led by Li Zongren and Bai Chongxi reached Shanghai, they were actually shocked that the CCP had grown soo large and had beaten off a warlord army themselves. With the CCP now basically having a militia army and the fresh memory of what happened in 1925, the KMT were scared that these right-wingers would create discord again by going on massive riots and protest which, they were right. Soon as the NRA had settled Shanghai, the CCP went straight to work and harassed the European powers in the International Settlement to release the entire area back to Chinese jurisdiction. This actually shook the entire left-wing and caused paranoia to Chiang and many of his associates that if this continues, not only would the "face" of China be tossed into the bin with a burning fire right in it but also with the CCP armed now, they could challenge Chiang's authority with them being so great now and thus declared the CCP ousted from the Nanjing KMT. Thus, Chiang started passing secret edicts along the Nanjing KMT-held territories and even employed Triads like the Green Gang in Shanghai led by Du Yuesheng to capture, torture and publicly execute these "Commies" for all to see as the CCP were "anti-revolutionary in the ideals of late-Sun Yat-sen". Soon, the purge happened everywhere from Zhuhai to Nanking and Changsha and beyond. In an ironic twist of fate, Wang Jingwei was still at loggerheads with Chiang and still maintained a standpoint that these Communists were actually helpful and they could work together for a better China and maintained good ties with the Soviets in Wuhan with his own government called the "Wuhan KMT" but when he received news that Stalin had personally wrote to the leaders of the CCP even in Wang Jingwei's regime to raise up as a peasant army and kill Chiang. This shocked Wang who promptly negotiated with Chiang while watching his government collapsed and then fleeing to Germany.
@@JsJdv If Germany gave China more technology, Japan would not even stay in China. The Japanese army was crap, some Japanese were converting to Chinese side anyways. The Chinese puppets were giving up and de-linking from Japanese control. Japan would have been the first to go in the war and capitulate. They couldn't hold China let alone stay in China. Even with the Navy, the Navy is useless because they cannot fight on land & an air war. The Zero was overrated. The BF109 fair much better against Zero as it can fight against P51 Mustangs and Spitfires no problem with Aces under the wings. Japan would have ran out of manpower and aircraft fighting against full German-Chinese alliance. Japan had to get better weapons trading with Germans for example Tiger tank techs. Soviet Union could have just sat out for a while anyways as Germany is the main power house of all factions in WW2 technologically. They were the first to get Jet aircraft's, first to build continental rockets, first to get Heavy penetrating tanks that can knock out even cold war era tanks. With Chinese manpower and resources German would have produce as much equipment as Soviet Union and gave them a massive edge. Just like today's German cars. this is chinese name 金陵十三钗 english name The Flowers Of War he story of the film is set in the Nanjing Massacre during the Anti-Japanese War. It tells a moving story of Nanjing, China, occupied by Japanese forces in 1937, between people who do not know each other in a church. An American pretending to be a priest for saving people, a group of female students hiding in church, 14 women fleeing the war, soldiers and wounded soldiers who resisted death, put aside their lives and deaths at a time of crisis and went to a solemn covenant of death
Excellent film. Well done on every level. This is not an action, shoot-out type of movie, but, rather the battle scenes lend support to the drama of trying to save as many young female students as possible from Japanese atrocities. Much in the vein of Schindler's List. Chinese film making has come fully into it's own.
The soliders have german gear because they are part of the nationalist chinese forces that were trained and supplied by Nazi Germany prior to Hitler eventually cutting of support for China at the request of the Japanese. These were the most elite and formidable troops of the Chinese nationalist forces and were more skilled and disciplined than their Japanese counterparts, winning many victories over them. However, in an effort to gain more substantial foriegn support against Japan's assault, Chiang threw them into the fray in the defense of Nanking, hoping they would put up a heroic defense that would move foreign countries to help. They did put up such a defense, often staying even when all other Chinese units had disintegrated and fled, holding to the last man or acting as guerrillas after being overrun. As the Chinese Nationalists were unable to relieve or replenish these units and no substantial foreign support arrived, they were decimated at Nanking and either wiped out or were only a shadow of their former self afterwards. The skill & determination of them presented in Flowers of War might seem overblown, but I can assure you that if anything the movie downplays this. Compared to standard Chinese & Japanese soldiers, the German-trained Chinese were supersoldiers that outwitted, outplayed, and frustrated the Japanese army to no end. Part of the reason Japanese soldiers were so brutal in their treatment of the people of Nanking was in retaliation for the shame of defeats inflicted on them by these soldiers.
Yeah but it wasn’t Nanking, it was Shanghai, they held off the Japanese for three months there but Nanking fell in a couple weeks I believe because all the German trained divisions were shredded but everything else is right, thanks for knowing history
Unlike shitty movies where the "good" guys shoot full auto into the open and the bad guys die like flies, makes the movie seem like a joke, i like movies where battles are realistic where death is rare and most fire is tactical and supression just like real life

Just one MG34 and and a pak 38 could of done the job. Even the PAK 36 could of done the job. Nah probably even a 50 cal browning could of penetrated the armor of that tank
The MG-34 was a bad weapon compared to the MG-42, shorter range, longer reload, harder to control, shorter mag, cooling it down was a bitch comparing to the 42', it was also more expensive to produce, and the panzerfaust was produced until 1945 being introduced in 1942, so these troops couldn't even use it lol... The STG also introduced in 1943. If your talking about the earlier variants then yeah they probably could have them.
I am surprised that in a war zone that is being fought at an infantry on infantry level in an urban landscape, the electricity wouldn't had already been knocked out by artillery and air attack.
This was the early stages of the war, the Nationalists switched from German stuff to US weapons n equipment towards the end of the war. Still put up heavy Resistance and fought hard til Japan was defeated. Then they fought hard during the civil war (1946-1949) until they was driven to Taiwan.
0:30 you can feel his hatred for the Japanese what they did during WW2 was Terrible this is justice for all of them Chinese women and children who were murdered.
For what they were yet to do, atrocities that would be committed in a war nearly a decade later? It's like saying a guy in a Civil War battle clip is getting revenge for Little BigHorn - simply hadn't happened yet.
At this point in the war, the Communist were not a big enough threat to withstand against the Nationalists. I believe this battle wiped out pretty much all the professional soldiers the Nationalist had against Japan that they were forced to join forces with the Communists. Am I missing something?
All of the KMT's best and most well trained units were destroyed in Shanghai and Nanking due to poor decisions by Chiang Kai Shek true but they still had a large military. They weren't really forced to join forces with the Communists due to lacking manpower so much as fighting both a civil war and a war against an overwhelming invading force was untenable. That said, by the time the meat grinder that was the second Sino-Japanese war ended, the KMT forces were decimated and the Communist forces had grown stronger.
From "The Flowers of War" based on the Rape of Nanking in December 1937, one of my favorite all-time movies starring Christian Bale. It was the most expensive movie ever made by the Chinese.
They always depict the Japanese as cumbersome soldiers but when you read history, they were really deadly. I’m not saying I’m a sympathizer, it’s just they fought well especially against Chinese solders, they really didn’t take mass casualties, fighting Chinese mainly because Chinese were technically in a civil war. So they Chinese didn’t put up a united fight. Ironically it was the nationalist, not communist who fought well against Japanese.
It actually goes deeper than that. The tactics and strategies of the Chinese National Forces (Kuomingtang) were so pathetic, they normally needed well over a million troops to defeat a force one-tenth their size. Only the Chinese Communist Red Army fared better due to better tactics. There should be no reason why a nation the size of China lost so much to an enemy like the Japanese one-fiftieth their size. It fault starts at the top with that idiot Chiang Hai-Shek and filters down. Yes, there were exceptions, but those were few and far in between. I studied Chinese war history from the 1820's Opium Wars to the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1952. Complete incompetence on the KMT. Only the Italians in WWII were worse and that is debatable!
No I’m pretty sure communist did a crappy job at defending the Chinese. There was a couple of communist victory in battles. But mainly fighting the Japanese the nationalist won majority of the battles. But at the behest of the American government nationalist let communist take power over China. Well partially. The other reason was unknown to why chaing Kai shek didn’t put up a fight again is t the communist after WW2.
I not a war historian, except classical warfare. Only the Chinese civil war interests me, When it comes to modern warfare that is. But for the most part the Chinese civil war is shrouded in mystery, thanks to the Chinese government. The only resource I managed to find on the war was a Mao biography. Anything put out by the Chinese government is really useless lies and Half truths. Other material I managed to find came form sociology books that gives a brief non detail accounts of the war. It interests me because it really was new world vs old world technology. Some of the warlords didn’t even have automatic weapons, only muzzle loading flintlocks. And let’s not forget all the back stabbing the communist were dong to their allies while the allies were fighting the real enemy, the Japanese.
"Backstabbing" isn't quite accurate either Neither side really trusted each other but didn't really hamper each other. They just refused to cooperate. Despite their "United Front" the only real battle that was a "victory" for the combined forces fighting side by side was the Battle of Wuhan which basically resulted in the United Front forcing a Pyrrhic victory on the Japanese, killing many Japanese but still losing Wuhan The only real "backstabbing" by the communists during the war was Mao's followers spreading propaganda so by the time the Japanese were defeated, Mao's new Red Army was far superior to the KMT and they had control over production. Plus the pieces were already in place, the communists could eventually grind down the KMT. The KMT wasn't clean either, some of their troops would kill communists they found spreading the propaganda during the war against Japan which, in turn, gave the communists MORE propaganda material There's no definite records on the war due to censorship and destruction, but ultimately: The biggest issue was lack of modernization and unity. While Chiang was officially in charge of the KMT, he wasn't really in control of the military, most of the power was split among warlords, some of whom were still using very old and outdated equipment and tactics using things like WW1 tactics (somewhat common tbf) like mass charges, old rifles, and no tanks Vehicle wise, the best they had really were WW1 era planes which were far inferior to Japanese planes. And despite Japanese tanks being pretty meme-worthy compared to other WW2 tanks, they are still better than nothing In terms of infantry, only a few divisions were properly "modernized" such as the soldiers depicted in the video. As such they were without a doubt the best prepared and most effective infantry vs the Japanese with modern equipment and tactics. However there were far too few to really make the difference The Japanese had been preparing for the invasion for a while and as such their troops were far better equipped and trained for the war, they were same fierce and effective Japanese troops that fought the Americans but with less of the "suicidal never retreat" mentality that came from losing ground and resources, and more so grim determination to defeat an old rival/enemy and survive in their territory. The biggest problem the Japanese had was their lack of numbers. They simply could not hold territory effectively enough across so much land and when the US entered the war they had to withdraw many troops from China to defend On the flip side, the communists had already been basically staging a guerrilla war vs the Nationalists so they had an idea on how to make it work vs the Japanese, only choosing to fight in the open when they had a clear advantage. This was far more effective than uniformed soldiers with outdated equipment and tactics trying to fight it out in the open constantly losing men and equipment and with various Pyrrhic victories if they ever got them

A lot of contempt is heaped on mg armed light tanks,or "tankettes" but this clip showed how in the right circumstances they could be VERY effective. Firstly, they almost all carried a supply of armour piercing bullets that could at least be hazardous at close range vs most(not all)of the main AFVs until at least 1941. But mainly they were good at supporting infantry, though better in rural areas! The main advantage was that although the crew had lots to worry about, from enemy machine guns especially if firing armour piercing rounds to anti tank rifles and grenades the gunner of a "tankette" could nonetheless take a few seconds to get a good bead on his target with at least SOME degree of safety.

Some of the contributing factors of the Japanese Victory over China's Allied army has to be with infighting among factions such as the Kumentang and Communist. The National Revolutionary Army of Republic of China, simply NRA is a German-trained Division that fought against the Imperial Army of Japan during the Sino-Japanese War. Germany, wanting to diminish Communism in their 'Aryan race superiority Complex', sought to help the Republic of China after rejecting, or rather cancelling their Pact with Russia, thus training their Chinese counterpart in an effort to thwart further reliance on Russia with its Communism, in which the Germans didn't wanted. They wore pre-War German Trauser, a German Military-parliament Casual Uniform, their infamous M1 Stallhelm, and a standard Infantry unit rifle. They were the most Elite within the Chinese Military, being able to defend themselves with just their rifles and acquired MGs during the Lend-lease. Well enough, months after months of tiresome fighting from men to men up to the last, they were soon overrun, and by the Winter of 1939, was enmasse diminished. With almost none to watch the end of the War. Most of them fought valiantly, but never did any large cause to support the War-effort as they were in smallest of groups.

Japan was not fully industrialized, it ran out of fuel. They did not know how to mine fuel. Isn't this called the second sino-japanese war?

John Basilone's description in The Pacific created a pretty good picture of what the Japanese soldiers were capable of.
"Backstabbing" isn't quite accurate either
Neither side really trusted each other but didn't really hamper each other. They just refused to cooperate. Despite their "United Front" the only real battle that was a "victory" for the combined forces fighting side by side was the Battle of Wuhan which basically resulted in the United Front forcing a Pyrrhic victory on the Japanese, killing many Japanese but still losing Wuhan
The only real "backstabbing" by the communists during the war was Mao's followers spreading propaganda so by the time the Japanese were defeated, Mao's new Red Army was far superior to the KMT and they had control over production. Plus the pieces were already in place, the communists could eventually grind down the KMT.
The KMT wasn't clean either, some of their troops would kill communists they found spreading the propaganda during the war against Japan which, in turn, gave the communists MORE propaganda material
There's no definite records on the war due to censorship and destruction, but ultimately:
The biggest issue was lack of modernization and unity. While Chiang was officially in charge of the KMT, he wasn't really in control of the military, most of the power was split among warlords, some of whom were still using very old and outdated equipment and tactics using things like WW1 tactics (somewhat common tbf) like mass charges, old rifles, and no tanks
Vehicle wise, the best they had really were WW1 era planes which were far inferior to Japanese planes. And despite Japanese tanks being pretty meme-worthy compared to other WW2 tanks, they are still better than nothing
In terms of infantry, only a few divisions were properly "modernized" such as the soldiers depicted in the video. As such they were without a doubt the best prepared and most effective infantry vs the Japanese with modern equipment and tactics. However there were far too few to really make the difference
The Japanese had been preparing for the invasion for a while and as such their troops were far better equipped and trained for the war, they were same fierce and effective Japanese troops that fought the Americans but with less of the "suicidal never retreat" mentality that came from losing ground and resources, and more so grim determination to defeat an old rival/enemy and survive in their territory.
The biggest problem the Japanese had was their lack of numbers. They simply could not hold territory effectively enough across so much land and when the US entered the war they had to withdraw many troops from China to defend
On the flip side, the communists had already been basically staging a guerrilla war vs the Nationalists so they had an idea on how to make it work vs the Japanese, only choosing to fight in the open when they had a clear advantage. This was far more effective than uniformed soldiers with outdated equipment and tactics trying to fight it out in the open constantly losing men and equipment and with various Pyrrhic victories if they ever got them
Is this "Flowers of War", a German movie? Where can one find it to watch?

The main advantage was that although the crew had lots to worry about, from enemy machine guns especially if firing armour piercing rounds to anti tank rifles and grenades the gunner of a "tankette" could nonetheless take a few seconds to get a good bead on his target with at least SOME degree of safety.
Chinese National Army wearing Wehrmacht helmets. I think I’ve seen this movie. I know the Chinese get wiped out but they take a crap load with.

Too bad I have to buy this movie to watch the whole thing. It's not on Netflix, Hulu, nor HBO. They want money to buy it on Prime Video. Sad. So many good films outside of the USA, can't watch them.

What film is this
flowers of war
Crazy if you think that the Chinese Army had much more manpower number wise than the Imperial Japanese...
Some of the contributing factors of the Japanese Victory over China's Allied army has to be with infighting among factions such as the Kumentang and Communist. China lacked alot on what Japan had tenfold a well equiped and Mechanized forces consisting of Tanks, Artilery, Aircraft and ships ready to support a long drawn out offensive though this doesn't mean china's weak.
the whole row of japanese soldiers walking through not watching the roofs, and the sniper taking down the rope to kill a tank makes this look pretty stupid
City Of Life And Death scenes were much better and showed proper tactics
Any suggestions where to find this Chinese film in the U.S. Is it sub-titled throughout?

Before I thought they were German soldiers fighting the Japanese in China
Not that I am fascist or anything but Germany teaching other nations how to be skilled fighters in wartime like China, as shown here,Chile, Argentina and even America (Prussian officer Eric Von Steuben I think was a big player in the creation of official military discipline and etiquette within the revolutionary army.)
