    Band of Brothers: The bonds you make with the men you fight beside.

      I feel Band of Brothers has small parts for what war does to someone, but that was kinda on the side where as here it's front and center.

      @@Thephillips-dj1po Band of Brothers definitely had its moments. Mostly Bastogne, Foy, and Carentan. But The Pacific is incredibly brutal. And another thing I like is how John Basilone's story is used to demonstrate how even the decorated heroes may end up being just one more name on a long list of casualties. The overall "no heroes" theme of The Pacific is rather refreshing with how Hollywood war movies often glorify the protagonists.

    The battle of the Tenaru was intense. The Japanese were confident their bayonet charges could do the job like they had against the Chinese, but then they encountered Marine firepower. I think no more than a dozen Japanese troops were taken prisoner, most of them unconscious.

    • @2TrackMind-c6i
      @2TrackMind-c6i หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      At Tenaru, marine firepower was about the same as the Japanese: WW1 era bolt action rifles and light .30 caliber machine guns and a few mortars. The Marines did not get the M1-garand until later. The Japanese were continuing the suicidal tactic of open infantry assault in mass groups. After Guadalcanal, they virtually stopped doing that and fought a ferocious defensive war.
      In China, the Japanese again faced almost even technology. The Chinese were mostly armed with modern Mauser bolt actions and the same class of light .30 cal machine guns, plus plenty of artillery - old but serviceable. The main difference was Japanese air power and iron discipline, compared to weak Chinese leadership and self-motivated officers and generals. Even so, the Japanese employed the same hard charging tactics that cost them very high casualties. It worked in China, where the Chinese army would retreat and simply fade away into the civilian population. But not against the Marines who were landed on islands with no place to retreat. The fighting was to the death on both sides, often at very close ranges.

      Every Marine a Marksman. And they were skilled melee fighters.

    • @2TrackMind-c6i
      @2TrackMind-c6i 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@davidkamaunu8734 So were the Japanese. The popular myth of the near sighted Jap with thick glasses who couldn't shoot was totally busted at Guadalcanal. And, they were masters of the bayonet.
      There were several reason the Japanese lost so badly in that battle, 1) lack of food and medicine for malaria and dysentery 2) Lack of ammunition for both rifle and artillery 3) the suicidal practice of charging entrenched positions. And 4) most importantly, very aggressive American navy attacks on anything that moved to supply the Japanese, no matter how outnumbered or what the flotilla make up was. It was the naval battles off Guadalcanal that caused the Japanese admiralty to limit exposure to US Naval forces, much of the caution due to the reckless aggression of American destroyer captains. US destroyers were heavily armed, and well crewed, and could inflict serious damage to the valuable troop transports which the Japanese could not replace.
      The marines also suffered malaria and dysentery but they had quinine and much better supply consistency. They also captured significant amounts of Japanese rice at the airfield. If little else, they had energy sustaining carbohydrates which the Japanese did not.
      Fatal casualties were about 1600 US vs. 30,000-40,000 Japanese. Most of the latter died of other than combat causes.

    The first battle is Guadacanal as depicted in the movie. Had an uncle who fought the Battle of the Ilu River (AKA: Alligator Creek & incorrectly as Teneru due to the poor maps of the era) he was in one of 4 tanks that next morning cleared out the coconut grove in which Col Ichiki's men retired after the nights slaughter. Icjiki's force consisted of 900 men.

    • @jaygonztx
      @jaygonztx 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      According to the Marine Corps histories and after action reports, when Vandergrift had sent those 4 Stuart tanks in, they came out of the coconut grove with the tracks looking like a meat grinder; as they had supposedly drove over some of the Japanese wounded. Rumors of the Goettge Patrol massacre had reached H/2/1 by that point, coupled by wounded Japanese wounded attacking 2/1 Corpsmen with grenades earlier that day. No chances were taken that afternoon.

      Your comment is 100% correct as I was told by my relative specifically : "The back of his tank was covered with hamburger meat." There were combative Japs in what he called "spider holes" which the tanks ground down. He stated that a wounded Jap, which he dispatched with his pistol, that tried to place a mine on his tank. I found out much later, from an author seeking to interview my relative, that my uncle was the last survivor of the 4 tank crews thus the only one left to interview. "After Guadacanal the 1St Marines went on R&R In Australia, refitted and then sent off to another hell hole called New Britain.

      War is hell. My grandfather served in the Korean war and got a bronze star. He'd wake up with night terrors and random bouts of ptsd at times until he got alzhimers. But he was his squads marksman and I can only imagine what he had to do. And he was a very religious catholic man but he said he did things he doesn't think the lord would approve of. He told me his platoon leader got his leg blown off by a morter shell and my grandfather tourniquet his wound and put him on his back and ran. My grandfather got hit with an enemy round in the leg and he said he would feel it hurt at random times and he said he didn't feel it while he had adrenaline but once that wore off he almost passed out because of the pain. Luckily it didn't hit and artery. 🙌 I just hope people learn from the past and don't go to war.
