Excellent review but begs the question whether a 1050 Solar is coming. For now, think I'll keep using my 1040. Your son is too adorable, treasure these times.
I think it should be clear that solar on a 1050 can't add much energy. I assume the battery of the 1050 is at least as big as in the 1040 if not bigger. With roughly twice the battery consumption the consequences are: if solar adds 25% more battery life to the 1040 then the same solar power will add at most 12,5% battery life to the 1050. I guess this tiny adder is not big enough to be worth any R&D effort and extra costs. So it seems very logical why solar doesn't really make much sense on the 1050.
What about map visibility comparison 1050 and 1040? The most important display improvement feature is higher density dpi on 1050. Does 1050 shows more detail of roads with less zooming? If this point is improved, I am thinking to buy one.
A great in-depth review. Thanks. I wish they had included a ride share/Taxi feature for the times of an unfixable mechanical or tubeless situation and you need a ride home. I'd prefer not to be tethered to a mobile. It's annoying the new physical configuration may need new out-front mounts and that's added phaff and expense. The shorter battery life and weight are downers but not deal breakers. It's all good progress for a new iteration. I'm just not overly convinced it's worth a must buy/upgrade, especially compared to my Solar 1040.
I’m thinking of getting one and as a bonus I understand it connects to Mahle e-bike system for all your data and power levels and that bell is a great idea, thanks for the review
Things have come a long way from the Avocet computer on my first bike. Now there’s more tech on my bike than an F-4 Phantom fighter. BTW, pilots used early off the shelf automotive radar detectors to spot SAM sites. The newest bike in my Service Course has e-tap, Garmin Edge, Varia with camera. My phone and watch track my progress and stats.
22:45 - I really like how the map is rendered on the new E1050: much cleaner (main roads are not overwhelming), hill icons the same. And these unpaved roads - dotted line is much nicer. I wish same rendering algorithm was backported to E1040.
As always, good detailed review. I do have a suggestion for a review feature however, in the future, could you test the ride tracking and incident reporting features? Apologies if you have and I have missed this. I just finished a bit of a side by side comparison of a Wahoo Roam V2 and Edge 840 Solar and the Garmin live track works well while the Roam 2 lags or does not track at all. Also to my knowledge only the Garmin eco-system offers incident detection. It's a bit frustrating to see all of the intricate features of these units only to have basic safety features not work correctly.
Which store if you don't mind me asking? I'm also looking at 1040 in UK... But just know a new amazing mid range GPS will be released as soon as I click "buy" 😂
@@Neil_down_south Balfes did a great deal a few weeks ago at 420. Sigma sports 445 looks like the best deal currently. I'd expect some better deals as the 1050 becomes available.
15:18 - does E1050 still require a Strava-created route to include Strava Segments? Do they work in a free-ride mode or when using a Course created in Garmin Connect? Thanks!
18:13 I keep wishing Garmin would make the gradient gyro-based. You might have to manually calibrate it every ride (stand bike upright on a marked line and lean it side to side, then turn it around on the line and repeat), but that's definitely something I'm willing to do, especially on a ride with lots of climbing.
I put the beta on my 1040 unit and the home screen looks nothing like the 1050. Surely that could have been included in the beta as it wouldn’t have taxed the 1040’s screen resolution. Happy to get the Garmin Share function back
Hmmm... My old Nüvi 550 had a built-in speaker for turn-by-turn navigation instructions. My Montana 680 has spoken turn-by-turn instructions but no speaker so I have to plug in a speaker or some wired earphones to hear them. So what about the Edge 1040? Bluetooth speaker integration, wired headphones or no spoken instructions at all? What's the point of a navigator that doesn't help you navigate? I want the extended battery life of the solar option AND the spoken directions. How can that even be a question?
Ah lama no balance bike for lil man. Worked wonders for my kids. Not sure about this unit, can’t quite see what is so new about it apart from the screen. Great intensive testing as usual
I got the 1040 Solar for long multi-day riding, and the new 1050 doesn't appear to have anything that would make me want to upgrade to leave the longer battery life behind. OTOH I love the new 1050 display and the bell is a fun feature. But at the end of the day, battery life is going to overshadow these new features.
Thank you for the great in-depth review! It appears your mount can swivel upward, tilting the Edge 1050 screen up toward the rider. Can you share what mount that is?
Shane, great video as always. Quick question for you. I know you did a video on how to add "the Property of GP Lama" text in prior years. I tried the same to get it on my 1040 and it isn't working. Am I doing something wrong or is it the same sequence as before. Thanks.
They should definitely increase (and make thicker as well) the smaller fonts in the data fields. For instance: In the case of a ride longer than 1 hour, the font indicating the total number of hours is not visible at all.

I believe the ability to react so fast to gradient changes relies on an internal inclinaison sensor. Changing the inclinaison of the device mount could influence the first estimations (either exagerated or underestimated)
Do the routing improvements include not having your ride abruptly end if you go near the end point and having the option to follow your route in reverse such as going counter clockwise on a clockwise loop?
Great review, I always turn to your reviews first when a new product comes out that I am interested in as I know that your coverage will always be very complete and that you won't pull any punches. I am a long-time 1030+ owner and I was really hoping that the new 1050 would be an excuse to upgrade that I could not walk away from, however, unfortunately, I just cannot see dropping $700 (US) on this device based on what I have seen. The device is indeed impressive and the screen is fantastic (other than the backlight timeout/always on issue, which is a complete miss). It seems a bit curious that with the obvious higher power needs of this device, Garmin did not rollout a solar version at launch. Many of the new features that Garmin are touting just are not of interest to me...I never do group rides and I use navigation maybe once or twice per year at most. If/when I am forced to buy a new device because my current 1030+ either dies or gets broken, this new 1050 is definitely the leader for my next purchase, however, an upgrade before it is actually a need is something that I cannot justify.
Shane, thanks again for another great review. I really like the high resolution screen and increased brightness compared to my Edge 1040. Was going to place the order on Garmin's website and at checkout went from 1 - 3 days shipping to 5 - 8 weeks shipping. I'm going to wait until it is available at retailers. BUT this is definitely a must have for me. BTW, did you try setting up your screen the way you have in your 1040 with the Wind Field and Map Dash Board MS apps? I have been using that screen setting since the day you shared it :)
Thanks for your kind words. These videos are monsters to work on with all the overlays/etc. Each section could be a video (and will likely be when updates start rolling out). Most, if not all, ConnectIQ apps/data fields have to be updated/compiled to support new devices such as the 1050. The developers of these add-ons usually don't get early access to units, so we have to wait for the public release for them to get to work updating their apps for support. I'll be installing WindField, MyBikeTrafficRadar, MapDashboard, MapFields, and TyreWiz as soon as they're updated.
Wow. This video gave me some context on when my crash was. Little Lama is riding now. I really need to push through that post crash anxiety and get back out there this fall. It's been 6 years now. I went from riding 5k miles per year often forgetting to grab my streak of 2km on Zwift each week. And the 1050 looks pretty darned great. Has Garmin gotten better at releasing products in good states in recent years? I still remember ... was it the 820 that gave Shane issues in the heat at release?
Great review. 👍I only missed one thing, Shane. How does the display react when it's wet? Anyway, it's nice to see the improvements in most aspects. The price increase is easier to justify, but still, €749 for a bike computer? 🤔 I understand it's a high-end head unit, but we are not too far away from one grand head unit. 😬It was not so long ago you could buy a road bike for that money...
No major issues on my wet/rainy ride, nothing to report there. With enough water touchscreens will do their own thing (and screen lock comes in handy).
I’m on the verge of buying a 1040 solar, was thinking they’d release a new model as soon as they did! Any rumours of a solar version of this eventually?
Great video review as always and thanks for producing it. Nice computer but $1200au price tag is probably outside the most cyclists price point especially during these hard economic times. For pros it is a good device but amateurs like me is not necessary. Cheers
The 1050 screen brightness and bell addition is awesome, but as a bike accessory it’s expensive. Any idea on the share / % sold on promo vs rrp? That would be a good indicator on value perception. I’m a 1030 user, the upgrade value just isn’t there despite recognising the new one is great
The bell seams like a nice feature, an emergency flashlight on the front would have been welcome. The screen looks a bit better but have the felling that the 1040 could be tweaked to match it close. (map lines / contrast) the lap/stop buttons are still on the bottom would have like to see it being moved to the top (like wahoo ) or side, so I would be able mount it almost flush to the handlebar. My take, I do not see the upgrade, for the bell buy a hide my bell
@@ShaunMcDnghthere has to be "reason" to upgrade, If the 1050 had a OLED with the same battery life, I think it would have been a great update, With dark mode and adaptive refresh rate I think it could be done, I but afraid of for the price a OLED model
Hi Shane- biggest question I have is the integration with Connect and garmin watches. When I upload rides from 1040, there is a big where the watch’s recorded calories supersede the 1040 data. Therefore the incorrect numbers render training readiness features useless, and the entire ecosystem compromised. Can you shed any light on this? Garmin has told myself and other users that it is a x40 issue, and have been stating they are working on a fix for over a year. Any idea if this is fixed with the 1050?
I don't suppose given that it's winter that you've gone on a ride in the wet? My edge 1030+ has consistent problems with elevation even when not really wet at all (just mist/fog for instance), so I'm hoping they've finally improved this feature. This isn't just about getting incorrect elevation gain, but current elevation, gradient and total gain remaining; these are important when you're climbing a lot or doing an event (or Everesting would be a perfect example)! My trip to the Grampians last week was hour after hour of virtually zero elevation change! Strava elevation correction doesn't always fix this properly.
Hi Shane. Been running a cycliq duo mount with the Fly12 underneath and the garmin 840 on top. recently bought the 1050 and it does not fit the duo mount. The Garmin mount that the 1050 comes with is not compatible with the Fly12. Do you know if Cycliq are doing a duo mount that fits the 1050 and the fly12? Any chance you could find out for the community.
Great review as always! Finally this is an interface and hardware upgrade that makes me want to consider moving off my 1030! With the change in the placement of the mount would you mind sharing the dimension from the Centre of the mount to the base of the unit ? I feel this would be useful to check existing mount to bar clearance.
Why the hell did they move the quarter mount higher up? Most bike mounts barely fits the 1040 already. Also the plastic mount breaks easily, huge step backwards
1050 vs 1040 is sort of like epix vs fenix. How much battery life would you sacrifice for the nicer screen? I love my 1040 and I am still learning to get everything out of it. I have never used the group ride feature. I would use a feature where you could share a course by touching units together like iPhone name drop for contact sharing.
THE number one feature I need in a GPS computer is battery life! I purchased the 1040 Solar 14 months ago and it covers all my rides for a week. But more importantly it covers my 600 km brevets and barely needed a quick bump when I did Paris Brest Paris 1200km in 2023. That 1050 sounds like a bright shiny object ie, Di2 and Etap, with terrible battery life -15 hours? Are you kidding me? Sorry it’s a non starter for me.
how do you see that screen its not good makes it feel cheap all washed out and dim. you also need to put setting brightness to 100% just to see anything and wipes out that battery. i take a 1050 over that 1040 solar all day but not worth the upgrade from a std 1040 as the screen is so much better than solar
what is the decibel level of the bell? voice alerts would be awesome for road races! that backlight feature was so that people peeling off the front of the group can't glance at your heartrate to see how you are feeling. :D I am sad that it has less battery and heavier because charging so often seems to be harder on the battery on these devices
Yeah, it's worse than the beeps for everything. :) However, I like that you can send it to the phone instead, then with my bone conduction headphones, I think I'd like it.
I will keep moaning about Garmin's pitiful Strava integration. Routes changes don't automatically sync? Segments only work on Strava routes? Limit to 100 synced segments? Just bafflingly incompetent.

New Garmin🎉 I’m straight here to watch Lamas video. Thank you!
I bought a 1040 at a good price. 420gbp recently. Still very happy vs 650gbp launch price. Battery life is fine if its 20 hours.
You back on the Garmin good list now ?
releasing this after the dura review, is either brilliant marketing or the best of luck :D
750 quid is outrageous
$1199 AUS down here in Australia, 😞
Just wondering...er...does it have a bell...by any chance...?

15:18 - does E1050 still require a Strava-created route to include Strava Segments? Do they work in a free-ride mode or when using a Course created in Garmin Connect? Thanks!
I like it. I see a Karoo 2 replacement in my future. Thank you.
I've noticed that route gradient seems to be used for climb pro and route climbs and is different from what you see from the normal gradient field.
18:13 I keep wishing Garmin would make the gradient gyro-based. You might have to manually calibrate it every ride (stand bike upright on a marked line and lean it side to side, then turn it around on the line and repeat), but that's definitely something I'm willing to do, especially on a ride with lots of climbing.
i want the group ride function....thank you for your video
Think I’ll wait for the 1060
How is the workout feature on the new one? Could you create a video overviewing it? Is it the same as the 1030 and 1040? Great video!
Ah lama no balance bike for lil man. Worked wonders for my kids.
Not sure about this unit, can’t quite see what is so new about it apart from the screen. Great intensive testing as usual
Oh sweet! Super glad I bought my 1040 3 weeks ago lol....
Great and amusing review.
Shane, is there a way to screen record with the 1050? I'd like to show my real time stamina during my Zwift races. Thanks and have a great day!
Well, this explains how I got 1040 for 480eur just few months ago. Might be even cheaper now. I guess I'll wait for 1050 discounts in around 2028.
The turns guide signals are super little.......I can't see this ridicoluos 3mm signal. Why a big Edge if then Garmin out ridicoluos font sizes?
Great video. How do you have all that data on your map screen? Is it an extra app via garmin connect?
Here's all the details on how to set that up: th-cam.com/video/uYUq3479gc4/w-d-xo.html
@@gplama much appreciated!!!
The mounts I use are the Silca Chisela (no tilt), K-Edge, or custom mounts for integrated bars.
Shane, great video as always. Quick question for you. I know you did a video on how to add "the Property of GP Lama" text in prior years. I tried the same to get it on my 1040 and it isn't working. Am I doing something wrong or is it the same sequence as before. Thanks.
Same method as always. th-cam.com/video/h3hRgYwraXs/w-d-xo.html
@@gplama thank you sir!! Be safe.
Any chance of a video on mount compatibility?
They should definitely increase (and make thicker as well) the smaller fonts in the data fields. For instance: In the case of a ride longer than 1 hour, the font indicating the total number of hours is not visible at all.
I believe the ability to react so fast to gradient changes relies on an internal inclinaison sensor. Changing the inclinaison of the device mount could influence the first estimations (either exagerated or underestimated)
Do the routing improvements include not having your ride abruptly end if you go near the end point and having the option to follow your route in reverse such as going counter clockwise on a clockwise loop?
Wow, this feels like it's come right out of the blue!
It has been leaked for weeks.... It had more leaks than the Titan submersible.
@@gplama but I only watch your channel so you've done a good job keeping the NDA! ;)
@@gplama Just so you know, WindField is already compatible with the 1050 since Jun 25th update :)
Did you find mount that 1050 fits as my mount too short 😩
Great review. 👍I only missed one thing, Shane. How does the display react when it's wet?
Anyway, it's nice to see the improvements in most aspects. The price increase is easier to justify, but still, €749 for a bike computer? 🤔 I understand it's a high-end head unit, but we are not too far away from one grand head unit. 😬It was not so long ago you could buy a road bike for that money...
No major issues on my wet/rainy ride, nothing to report there. With enough water touchscreens will do their own thing (and screen lock comes in handy).
@@gplama good. Thank you. 🙂
Love everything about this thingy, 20hrs battery life is plenty. Buying one as soon as it is available.
I’m on the verge of buying a 1040 solar, was thinking they’d release a new model as soon as they did! Any rumours of a solar version of this eventually?
Great review as always Shane.
How many mm is the mount position shifted upwards?
Bought a 1040 6 days ago :/
(map lines / contrast)
the lap/stop buttons are still on the bottom would have like to see it being moved to the top (like wahoo ) or side, so I would be able mount it almost flush to the handlebar.
My take, I do not see the upgrade, for the bell buy a hide my bell
The screen is a hardware feature. Software isn't going to update the older units.
@@ShaunMcDnghthere has to be "reason" to upgrade, If the 1050 had a OLED with the same battery life, I think it would have been a great update,
With dark mode and adaptive refresh rate I think it could be done, I but afraid of for the price a OLED model
Best direct queries to Garmin Support on this one. Wearables aren't really in my wheelhouse.
If you were to upgrade to a new bike computer from garmin 520 is this the best one?
Any recommendations for an upfront mount? All my bikes have aero cockpits and the mounts I currently have don't fit 😭
There was a post on another site that suggested sticking a Ravemen light under 1050 that might raise it enough to clear bar. Anyone here tried this?
What is the center of the mount to the bottom of the device measurement?
The mount has moved ~7mm
Why the hell did they move the quarter mount higher up? Most bike mounts barely fits the 1040 already. Also the plastic mount breaks easily, huge step backwards
Came directly here to learn about this computer. Nowhere else.
I thought my iPhone out front mounted looked a little big, but then I saw this.
13:35. New Trek Madone Gen 8 with Sram Red? Upcoming review?
If I was to review bikes do I have to crouch down behind them and look surprised in the thumbnail?
@@gplama yeah! Feed the TH-cam algorithm.
On a seriously note. Please don’t. Just do you. That’s why I watch 😊
Have you been following an active route navigation while doing the Strava live segment? Do live segments pop up while following a route?
@@topbanana4013 incorrect
It would be interesting to see what the battery life is on the 1050 if the screen brightness is turned down to the same level as 1040 if possible.
DC Rainmaker says about 30 hours
what is the decibel level of the bell? voice alerts would be awesome for road races! that backlight feature was so that people peeling off the front of the group can't glance at your heartrate to see how you are feeling. :D I am sad that it has less battery and heavier because charging so often seems to be harder on the battery on these devices
Look forward to being serenaded by continuous exclamations of TURN LEFT, TURN RIGHT from every direction on your next sportive 😅
Никто навигацию не ставит на гонки
Yeah, it's worse than the beeps for everything. :) However, I like that you can send it to the phone instead, then with my bone conduction headphones, I think I'd like it.
turn the f**king voice prompts off then
Do Strava segments work now when using a course that wasn’t made on Strava?
Not tested. One for Garmin Support.
I will keep moaning about Garmin's pitiful Strava integration. Routes changes don't automatically sync? Segments only work on Strava routes? Limit to 100 synced segments? Just bafflingly incompetent.
@@gplama this is an issue since 99999 mln of years :/. Strava segment during the course never worked. Requested milion times in Garmin support :). Segments works only during the freeride. Looks like "Strava segments" are "normal course" on Garmin Devices. So device is not able to navigate through the Original Course and Segment course.
@@rasherdkalso, only 1 segment at a time. Can’t have an entire climb segment going while also seeing segments for parts of that climb. Wish Garmin would fix that too.
Strava segments stopped working on any course for me, even one's created on Strava, that's on the old 530 😞
Just finished the video. Great insight into it. I’m on a 1030 Plus and 130 Plus (for racing), but I think I’ll be upgrading to this as my daily
