I mean I’ve watched for the better part of 20 years and while the cars were amazing, the racing was mixed at best. Good races only came out of chaos. Still, it gave us 2021 and Lewis’s prime so it was better than a lot of eras. Still think we should go back to the late 2000s style of cars with more underfloor aero, at least they were light. The racing was more dynamic.
Number 44 was a mere passenger of such spaceship. Like the rest of the years. Without a missile two seconds faster, we've seen his true level, worse than other drivers in worse cars.

2020 was the first year I actively watched every practice session, every qualifying and every race since I had nothing else to do, and Im so glad I did because the view of those cars during qualifying was just different.
2020 cars were the fastes over one lap for sure, but over a race distance they are actually in many cases a lot slower than the 2004 v10 cars. I put 2020 and 2004 bahrain gp side by side at some point for fun, hamilton in the 2020 mercedes would have been lapped by schumacher in his 2004 ferrari.
It’s such a shame we never got to see these cars gun it round a full race calendar. We are very lucky to have see it as Mugello, I never thought f1 would go anywhere near there.
Although the cars were fast these regulations produced very boring racing where overtaking was extremely difficult and it was nearly impossible to run within 2 seconds of the car ahead without a massive increase in tyre deg. We should be happy that we have more interesting regs that allow more overtaking than mindlessly praising a certain year of cars for being slightly faster than today.

Before the ground effect era cars produced much more turbulent air and were also very sensitive to turbulent air so overtaking was extremely difficult and often required one driver to be on a newer, faster tyre compound.

2020 had some pretty good races like Austria, Monza, Turkey, and Sakhir. Of course the title battle was a bit bland, but I honestly enjoyed how they went to a bunch of old/never race at tracks!
In 10 years of time we would need to get rid of all the wings and have 100% of the downforce to be coming from the fan systems pushing the air upwards (like airplane turbines) instead of backwards to make the system even more efficient. Even the slowest corners would be taken at 8-9G while it would be easy to follow eachother in every corner, possibly in the rain too if the "turbines" were slightly angled outwards, spraying the water to the side of the track.
yeah as others said regulation changes, it is usually around 3-5 years cycles in each F1 regulation. With only small within those 3-5 years period. Next big change is coming in 2026.

Dream F1 regulations setup: this speed, V10(hybrid for more speed and to appease the manufacturers), current looks, like 100-150kg lighter and like a few cm smaller, active aero but with FULL control to the drivers. Also maybe a rule that the cars have to be like at least 80% painted and not just carbon. I don't think these are unrealistic regs but I know this will never ever happen.

In the 1980s to 1990s when most of today’s chief engineers were still in university, unless they did a thesis on ground effect like Newey who got 1st class honor, they simply didn’t have sufficient knowledge in this area. Also, the rules seemed fine to me because most of the cars have Redbull-like appearance, suggesting that the performances should theoretically converge, but Redbull still leaps ahead could only be explained by the fact that the whole intake, suspension, load distribution, underfloor tunnels, and diffuser work perfectly well. Mercedes for example very likely has poor diffuser design that leads to high pressure drag. The teams simply lack the academic knowledge so they underperform. Unless ground effect is banned which I remind that ground effect has allowed close racing, regulations change won’t kill the performance of Redbull when the problem is other teams’ lack of knowledge

not really, it's a sport as well and these cars make it impossible to race and the influence of driver skill is reduced because they are so grippy you don't get a situation where a better driver can utilise the grip because he's more confident than a worse driver

The only issues with cars pre-2022 was major reliability issues. Close racing would cause the entire car to overheat, not just the tyres. Tyre degradation was high. The old regulation tyres caused flat spots and blistering. Hamilton nearly lost 2020 Silverstone because 1 of the tyres was shredded at the last lap. Now we get to see more wheel to wheel racing (atleast with everyone below Verstappen) without the car heating up. Tyres are much more reliable and drivers have extended their stints by multiple laps without losing much performance. Let’s see what the 2026 regulations bring for us
