      @@oussamabendakir1453 Success is relative, and relative to its contemporaries the RB19 was basically untouchable. If we judged all previous F1 cars the way you did, then some of the most dominant and creatively-designed cars in F1 history (Lotus 49C, Ferrari F2003-GA, etc.) would be completely out of the running against cars just 2-3 years their junior.

    Windiness isn't much of a differentiator because headwind and tailwind are experienced on different parts of the track across the whole lap

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your statement would only make sense if each sector was exactly the same, only facing a different wind direction. In reality, they're not (even the track surface will be different due to bumps, etc), so wind will affect different portions of the track to different degrees.

    • @chiefdenis
      @chiefdenis 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rars0n since the track is mostly shaped in a square aspect ratio, headwind in one direction would almost certainly result in tail wind on a significant portion of the track, the effects would not be equal, but it also wouldn't be a huge differentiator unless the wind changes direction rapidly on a lap

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chiefdenis Only 2 of the straight segments run roughly parallel to each other (Hangar and Hamilton). Further, the two DRS zones are roughly perpendicular, so if one has a headwind or tailwind, the other has a crosswind. Combine that with all the high-speed corners and that means that the track layout can indeed be significantly affected by wind direction.
      Remember also that he's comparing two different laps that happened 3 years apart, so wind conditions are totally different for the entirety of each lap.

    if ground effect is so strong why do the positive downforce cars have such a large speed advantage in the corners

    • @vickramgangaram2925
      @vickramgangaram2925 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Because the overbody aero typically offer more stable and predictable/consistent downforce and the ground effect dependent cars can be very sensitive to changes in ride height and track surface irregularities. It's not really about the magnitude of the effect.

    • @spangles7
      @spangles7 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      ^Comment above is correct. Another reason is the cost cap. Back before it existed the top 3 teams were spending around $400 million per season to improve their cars, they were allowed to throw money into problems till a solution was found. With the cap being at $135m today on top of a limit to CFD testing it's a lot more cost effective for the teams to iterate proven designs than it is to innovate something that's theoretically better but unproven in the real world.

    Why there are always as "excuses" in this type of comparisons of this current generation of cars with those of 2020, is my opinion and not to criticize, but in all the videos of these comparisons there is an excuse to favor the ground effect cars, that the wind helped the W11, that the weight, if the weight change and affect but so are the regulations, the 2020 were much heavier than their predecessors and are much faster, other times it is the asphalt, which is 1 degree colder then it is already 1 second of advantage for the W11, also remember that the party mode of Mercedes in that year was banned after Belgium and precisely Mercedes wanted to demonstrate its full potential and that of its engine at Silverstone, they unleashed the party mode at its highest level, then why can not simply say that the W11 was so fast on the straights because of its engine.

      Uhm, not sure about that. In the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Mercedes turned down their engines due to concerns over reliability. Specifically, Mercedes identified a potential issue with the MGU-K on one of their customer cars during the weekend, leading them to take precautionary measures to avoid a potential failure during the race. As a result, both Mercedes cars were running with reduced engine power to ensure they could finish the race without suffering from mechanical problems. Max had serious pace that race, but his comfortable win margin was helped by the decision mentioned above.

      They used an Altered W11 chassis for 2021 and called it W12. There were regulations(targeting Mercedes) changes that were made regarding the floor area on the car... Ironically the place where the W11 generated the most downforce, more than any other car. They also had a rule which blocked any major development on the next car.
      The FIA knew what they were doing when they changed the rules, Mercedes had mastered the regulations nobody was catching them. Ferrari had to cheat to get close.. and Red Bull needed final hour regulation changes to compete and win.........due to Masi.

      @Redeemed95 The 2021 regulations weren't to slow down Mercedes; they were to slow everyone down due to safety concerns, and they've been doing this for years. In 2019, 2020, and 2021, they introduced rules to slow the cars down or limit their rapid progression. Evidently, in 2020, it didn't work, so they made sure it did in 2021. Mercedes wasn't a target; everyone was affected, just that high-raked cars suffered less because of the nature of how they produce downforce.
