What age did you start having your dog groomed? I’ve been told to wait until 1 year. Does that sound correct? Mine had been in for a clean- up (meaning face, paws and privates) 2 times. He’s 8 months old. They also clip the nails too.

Hi Myrna, I was advised the same and waited until my dog's adult coat grew in at 1 year old before she got her 1st full body clip. This is fine so long as the dog is brushed out and has no matting. Like your dog, mine went to the groomer for tidy-ups prior to that to get her used to being at the salon. Thank you for watching. x

Hi, I am a new owner of a golden doodle. Teddy is 4months and his nails are long can I clip his nails or do I have to wait a specific age? Also, his hair is so long how long do i have to wait until groom?

You don't need to wait till a certain age to strart clipping nails.... start doing it gently when he's quiet and sleepy. Perhaps not all in one go, if that works better for you and your pup. Make sure you brush and comb his hair right from the start to get him used to it. You can take him for a puppy tidyup at the groomers to get him used to getting his coat done. All the best x

I am scared to do this! My Golden Retriever is 4 months and I tried with a grinder. No go, and yet I don't want to have to go to a groomer once a week or two. I even bought a clipper with a light on it. Great video though! :(

Thanks for commenting, Amy. A couple of suggestions about wriggly-puppy-bodies. You can slowly condition your golden to having his/her nails clipped by just getting her used to handling her paws (no grinder, no clippers) until she gets used to it. Also, you can sneak in and do one nail at a time - stealth like - when she is sleeping. Always associate it with a positive experience (praise, even a treat). Don't be in too much hurry to get all nails cut right away during the habituation/training process. All the best, let me know how you go xx

Very informative. Thank you. Can you do a video on cleaning her ears. Do you pull the hair in her ears? I don’t want to do that but some say it’s necessary with doodles.

Thank you Rachel :) 💛 Not a simple yes/no answer re: pulling out ear hair - I'll make a video on ear care soon. x

I have never had to trim my doodles nails. They wear down. I think dirt works better than concrete. Dogs pads grip on concrete. It’s one of the dangers pads face with concrete. The get so much traction it can cause tears. On dirt the dog pad slips and claws dig in. She is five and I groom her they are never long.

Thank you for sharing Jim. I wish that were the case for my dog - every couple of weeks, her nails are long again. Perhaps the dirt around our area is not compacted enough to wear the nails down. Good that you have one less thing to attend to on your doodle :-)
