I'm an amateur and groom only my own dog. This video was very helpful. When I shaved her paws I wore a headlight (i.e. a flashlight that you wear on your head to free up your hands for a task) and the brightness helped me see the where I was going with the clipper blade.
I’ve retired but having been a groomer for 45 years I must say it’s wonderful to see a professional doing a professional job. In all this time I have never been aware of dogs having issues as the hair grows back. I have however discovered some interesting debris imbedded in the soft section of their skin. Amongst gravel causing a huge abscess, amongst other vegetation I’ve pulled out a grass seed on one occasion that oozed puss as I removed it. I squeezed the rest of the puss out until I could see blood, cleaned it properly with antiseptic and the dog was fine. It had to have been causing discomfort to the dog and it wasn’t far from being a trip to the vet. So a professional groomer can save owners money and their dog from the stress of a stranger poking them about. Not to forget it also prevents them from the discomfort in the first place. Well done to the OP, I’m sure you will have done a lot of good with passing on your knowledge and in such clear manner. Bravo
Dave, your explanation and instructions were SO clear. How to hold/use the clippers, and WHY not to go into the between-toes areas (webbing), etc. Great vid, and I've DL'd it. I live overseas and was hesitant to take my Husky to a groomer for several reasons, and was going to buy some clippers today and try it myself. VERY glad I found your channel. I'm a recently retired Science teacher, and I know another natural teacher when I see one. Thanks for sharing your skill and info. 👍
YOU DID A GREAT SIMPLE JOB EXPLAINING ABOUT CLIPPING THE V... SOME OTHER PEOPLES VIDEOS DONT SHOW THAT OR SHOW HOW TO MOVE CLIPPER ON THE SIDES. SO THANKYOU! IM JUST DOING GROOMING COURSE ONLINE. 🐾🐾🐕
Thank you! I was cleaning my dogs paws with rounded scissors and it is a bit tricky. Now using your tips I can do it with my little paw clippers 😊 thank you
Keep trying. Have your clippers out & run it around the dog so he gets used to the noise. And let him see & smell it. Then just hold it on his body here & there without clipping. So thats what I did & it helps desensitize.
Appreciate the lesson! As much as I'd love to be able to take my dog to a groomer on a regular basis, I just can't afford it for now. Besides, he doesn't really require professional grooming. But he does have a decent amount of hair on his paw pads that he gets sap on. Plus he has allergies so when his feet get itchy, he will lick them a bunch. If they stay too wet for too long, then they can get all infected. Keeping his paw pads trimmed up has helped us mostly avoid that issue! But he is a Corgi with very lil legs. And I don't have anything to use as a grooming table. So I put him on the floor on his back, between my legs and go about it that way. Lol!
Wow I love the patience and detail how you explain things. I have 2 huskies with a limited budget. But I give the lots of TLC. Thank you so much for this videos.
Tech here: Dogs with cleaned shaved paws like this suffer in long run. DONT clean hair out but level it off instead. When hair grows back sharp, it irritates their paws, hence licking, and causes discomfort.
Totally agree!! I only "clean up" the hair on the bottom of paws. I think some groomers get a little to obsessed with the clean paw. Doesn't look comfortable for the dog .
Ingrown hairs may become a problem too. It's also good to check feet after exercising somewhere with grass awns like foxtails whether dog's paws are shaved or not. Some grass awns are very thin but strong.
@@haegar9293yeah I have a foxtail issue and my cocker spaniel even got a foot infected. I needed this video and a follow up video for the front so he doesn’t get another one imbedded and infected. (I just spent 5 hours cleaning my backyard of foxtails and there are still more) crossing my fingers my home grooming goes well Follow up edit (7/7/24): Technique worked out perfect followed with gauze, antibiotics, saline washes, and it saved me probably a thousand dollars in vet fees doing this all at home. :)
Oh this is a great video. I watched other vids where they're just digging in there, no mention of the webbing; that's important info to know. Groomers are reluctant to do my dog now because of his hind leg weakness and anxiety.
I had a dog named BOSTON,that looked just like Tommy,Oooo 😊You made my day!!! He was❤❤my dog that made me love again. What a beautiful memory. Thank You for sharing Tommy ❣️🎉
Thank you ! Very helpful video . I have a Yorkie and I need to do better his legs . Everyone is showing how to do face, body but nothing about the legs ☺️ - for short hair cut . I appreciate our help . Thanks
Thank you so much for such clear, precise and sensible advice in a targeted, bite-size video. Surprisingly, I never thought of dogs slipping, but of course! So great that you share what is obvious when you know, but not when you don’t! Never seen your channel before but am subscribing.. and yes, you have a very calming and engaging voice, perfect for instructional videos. Wishing you much success 🙂
Thanks for the video. I am an amateur groomer but took a community education class. My only warning is too make sure blade doesn’t get too hot so you don’t burn your dog or switch out blade if it is. My friend said she did that to her g dog.
That might work with one of my dogs, but the latest street dog that's gonna take some time. I do like how precise your videos are I've only watched one. I like the fact that there's not a bunch of other BS leading up to or anything else.
Thanks for this video. We just adopted a rescue Shih Tzu and learning to groom him. He is quite well behaved thankfully. His previous owners must have been pretty good.
Wow you have a very well mannered pup. Awesome concept you’ve executed, I’m from Burien, Washington and have a little chihuahua. I have to try this for sure
Dave this was so helpful thank you a million times! I first watched this two months ago and then I just got my clippers today and I did a step-by-step pausing the video and doing the thing you said and then pausing and doing the next thing . Definitely need some practice at making it look good but you gave me the confidence that I would not cut my dog and it went really well. Fantastic video!
Thank you for this video! Short, clear, and informative. Do you have a video on how to clean up tops of paws? I know you mentioned it would be in another video but I can't seem to find it
Loved the tip for toe clippers for small dogs! I have been wondering what those type clippers are for. I’ve been grooming my two Morkipoos and just using small curved scissors. This will make it so much easier! It takes me a forever doing their feet and legs. 😂
Great tutorial. Thank you so much! I'm scared I will cut my dog's skin. I guess it takes practice? I need to do my Cavalier's paws and he's only 8 months old.
Thank you so much! Would you please consider doing a show on trimming nails. I’m somewhat nervous about trying it but with the cost right it’s difficult. Thanks for your consideration.

This is the best video I've watched on this subject. Thanks for explaining each step in simple terms, not just doing it quickly on front of a camera.
Agreed! Great guy and teacher, glad you popped up , perfect timing for me and my Bichon/Toy Poodle puppy.
Agreed. 👍
Totally agree
Agreed
The Blade from clippers won’t hurt the pad ?? What size blade on the clippers
Props to the patient doggy.
You are a teacher, and you were able to get camera angles that help those of us trying to learn. Thank you
What an amazing calm and accommodating model you have there☺️
This has been the most helpful video about trimming a dog's feet. THANK YOU!

Great video. No annoying music while you are talking and straight to the point.

Thanks, Dave! You showed me how to do this about 11 years ago at UP, but this is a great refresher. What a good doggy you have!
I am so glad you liked the video! You are right, Taavi is a very good model.
You have such a calming voice. No wonder your dog is so relaxed! You made this effort seem so easy!

Imagine my dog being this well behaved. Not gonna happen lol.

Mine either that’s why I do it for him
@@nccrchurchunusualThanks! I will take your advice. I’ve spent a small fortune on grooming equipment and I plan to use it!
It changed my life when I got a grooming table

Thank you for showing the "Toe Blade" I've never heard of one of those before. So helpful, great video. Thanks from Richmond Beach, WA!
Before recently, i didn't even know you should shave your dogs feet. You made it very easy to understand!
Thanks for watching.
Best explanation in 100 videos! Thank u
Excellent Vid. I've been doing it all wrong all this time. Thanks Soggy Doggy!!

Unless you have a foxtail problem in your area and the hair traps the seed and it can burrow.
Ingrown hairs may become a problem too. It's also good to check feet after exercising somewhere with grass awns like foxtails whether dog's paws are shaved or not. Some grass awns are very thin but strong.
I use a 10 blade to clean up pads, for added safety and decreased irritation. It's easy to cut loose skin with a #30.

Thank you! The scooping technique is very helpful
As a 30yr. Professional groomer, I advise against using the TOE BLADE. It very easy to nick or cut the pad so just use the 10 blade only.
thanks! a ten blade wont cut anything, right? ive never used a electric shaver before and dont want to cause a visit to the vet...
A 10 blade can still cut skin. It's just a little safer than say a 7 blade
Thank you so much for this information. It was very helpful.
Yesterday a groomer used scissors but clipper method works much better. I’m going to try your technique next time. Thanks so much
Thank you! Great demo!

Thank you millions. I needed this. I do all my own grooming at home. Maybe this will gain some trust with my dogs.
This was well presented and informative. Thank you
Brilliant video, thank you!
You and your dog make it look so easy😂😂😂
Excellent work Doggy Man. Thanks a lot.
VERY informative! Thank you I did not know about the webbing between the pads!

The HAPPY FUR COMBO has helped reduce the matting in my long-haired cat’s fur. Highly recommended!
Thank you so much! My dog hates the groomer so we have to do it ourself haha
Omg. Thank you. I have been doing it all wrong and I have nicked the webbing. Now I know the correct way. 😊

Wow! Do you have any instructional for how to get the dog so relaxed?
