“Can you spare a dime” is probably one of the most relatable and definitely one of the more serious Spongebob episodes. It shows us how easy it is for our lives to be ruined just by being accused or loosing our jobs. It shows us how hard it is to actually achieve dreams and where it can ACTUALLY put you in life.

I literally rolled my eyes when I heard him say the episode dealt with OCD. I totally thought it was going to be Squidward being clean and organized or whatever and people would chalk that up to him being OCD. I completely forgot about the episode in question and the way they portrayed the intrusive thoughts and compulsions in it was really well done. Media likes to portray people with OCD as clean or organized and doesn't always touch on the intrusive thoughts that lead to the compulsions

I think another great episode with a serious topic is probably “The Donut of Shame” where Patrick deals with a panic attack because he feels guilty for “stealing SpongeBob’s donut”, and ends up overthinking the problem and starts to worry that SpongeBob would hate him for it.

    • @TheRoyalOrora

Alright, I can relate to this too much (though maybe not exactly)
There is this group I am in that is based around two TH-camrs. I was pretty active in there until about 9-11 months back, where I just disappeared without saying a word. (Mental health issues are to blame). For months and months, every time I even thought of their country, I would get overwhelmed with shame, guilt, and anxiety. About a 4 months ago, I was reunited with a small part of the group, but was nervous to go back fully. It wasn't until about 2 weeks ago that I finally built up the courage to go back, and not only did they welcome me back, they were completely understanding and no negative feelings were felt. Part of me feels dumb because of how much I worried over what was basically nothing, but the rest is just happy that I'm back with them. It's strange how my brain made a slight breeze into a massive hurricane.
Morral of the story:(at least most) people are pretty understanding and forgiving, and that your brain can twist things way out of proportion

    • @rogue7723
      @rogue7723 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

That's a good one :). I also liked that episode because in that one Patrick actually _cared_ that he might have wronged Spongebob in a way and does everything to his ability to rectify it. In bad _Spongebob_ episodes like "Yours, Mine and Mine" or "Smooth Jazz Of Bikini Bottom", Patrick was either a brainless, impulsive, unattached numbskull whose presence and contributions to the episode _only_ served to make matters _worse_ for the characters around him, or a selfish, possessive, entitled parasite who _couldn't care less_ about how his actions negatively affected others.

Spongebob having a meltdown reminds me of having an anxiety attack and even if its silly, I'm glad Spongebob was able to recover. Spongebob's breakdown due to thinking he missed the pickles is very upsetting because it gets to the point where he has forgotten how to function correctly. I literally never feel safe, even if my fears are completely irrational (ie: “I have a stomach ache today so I must be dying of cancer”). The worst part is the ONE TIME my fears turn out to be (somewhat) justified, my brain uses it as ammunition against me for the rest of time. It’s so, soooo exhausting.

Like I’ll feel the need to rewash a pan before using it and every time I wipe a “clean” one off and see grease my ocd feels justified. Or when I check the locks every night before sleeping and that night it happens to be unlocked and my ocd once again feels justified. You’re not alone in these irrational fears that sometimes have justifications that make it worse.

There’s another episode that talks about animal hoarding, where Spingebob takes in some stray snails and then everyone starts bringing him stray snails they find until he’s completely overrun with animals to care for. His house is a mess and he can’t leave the house, and Squidward’s allergies act up. In the end Spongebob winds up giving them to a shelter, where they will be better cared for, but the whole episode really shows how quickly animal hoarding can get out of hand and why although caring for pets is great and all, never take in more than you can care for so you and the animals will be happier and healthier.

Another episode similar to Just One Bite that works well as a metaphor for addiction would be The Hankering.
In this episode, it’s revealed that Mr. Krabs got hooked on eating chum during his navy days and has Been eating it in secret ever since. After the truck that sells it shuts down, Spongbob tries to make Krabs some chum substitute to satisfy his cravings, but to no avail. Eventually, Krabs resorts to going to the Chum Bucket to get his fix. Plankton agrees to give Krabs some chum, but on the condition he gives him the Krabby Patty secret formula, which Krabs actually agrees.
This was pretty uncomfortable to see since, to me at least, it parallels how in real life, people addicted to drugs might resort to drastic measures to satiate their addiction. Going so far as to sell off items that were precious to them, their homes, or in some cases even their own bodies just to get enough money to buy another fix. In this case, Krabs nearly gives away the secret formula, something that he would never do in a more sober state. Showing how his addiction has taken over his mind. The episode shows us how addiction and the dependency certain substances can create in people can warp their minds to the point where they lose sight of who they are and the important things in their lives.

I can honestly relate to all of spongebob’s actions in the episode because my parents went through a divorce, and from spongebob’s rebel attitude, to the mother (plankton) trying to make the child (spongey) feel more at home with them was the most relatable part. The episode with Stand up reminds me of when I was a kid, I overheard a racist joke and not knowing what it meant I told it to my dad. He went very quiet and explained the joke to me and I remember his words "Racists jokes are told to see if their are other racists in the audience." I think there is a solid difference between telling a joke to bring joy, and ones specifically meant to alienate and to harm. You gotta judge for yourself.

Well it doesn't really work within the spongebob universe. Technically 75% of the cartoon cast are all "minorities". The only other sponges we ever see are his parents so by definition spongebob is a minority in Bikini Bottom. The same can be said of Patrick as no other starfish are ever introduced. Plankton is the same. All the characters besides the fish in the background are all minorities as little to no other examples exist on the show.

The episode with squidward having depression is extremely relatable. And I'm glad they didnt just portray him as being rlly sad.
I personally have depression, and when I found out, it was through having what was basically a downhill, months long depressive episode, coupled with anxiety (which the two very commonly go hand in hand.)
There was this constant fear, downright terror towards failure. Thinking I was never good enough bc of appearance or intelligence or performance, but the depression led me to think "well I'm going to fail anyways. So why even try?" and then I was eventually too exhausted to even try. I could hardly make myself get out of bed or clean my small dorm room, or bathe or even cook usually.
Luckily I have never had suicidal thoughts, and I'm thankful for that. But I did have this sort of apathy towards my life, while my anxiety still made me fear what my failures could lead to. I was both scared of failure and screwing up my life, but also thinking that I didnt want to be here, while still not wanting to necessarily die.
Depression is just so much more than being sad. And it can often be rooted in fear, fear of failure being a good example. It's also rooted in exhaustion. And being too damn tired to do the bare minimum for yourself.

Squirrel Jokes, in my opinion, also does something interesting about racial humor: it's to leave no one off the table, and not make one group the joke in itself. SpongeBob does still tell jokes about squirrels, but they're interspersed with jokes about the other groups of Bikini Bottom; himself included. And everyone laughs at it because he's just poking fun and not hammering on something meant to hurt. It also helps that the citizens of Bikini Bottom actually know how to laugh at themselves as much as they do other people, so there's that.
