AP--Pennsylvania A young man attempting to honor his Soviet ancestors by repairing a customer's Subaru with scraps of a second hand spark plug wire was consumed whole by coyotes last night. By the time investigators arrived on the scene, only a head mounted utility light, part of a multimeter lead, a scrap of duct tape and a spark plug boot remained. The heavily stained coyotes were eventually pulled over by Pennsylvania state police while attempting a westward escape in the badly misfiring Subaru. A memorial service will be held on Staten Island, with a touching eulogy by Eric Obrachta. Attendees will be given a small roll of duct tape and a pamphlet on Toyota output shaft read errors.
I hope he marks that spark plug boot, and will see it and not use it, on the next Subaru repair!! He should wrap it in turkey bacon (so as to not waste any real bacon) and throw it at those YOTES!!
I like your spray bottle technique for finding secondary ignition faults - simple, quick and cheap. It looks like it could be an old school test, but It’s new to me.
Same for us Finns (next door to Russia), never throw out anything which still works. You'll need it to get to the parts store, sooner or later.. (Some time in next 5 years when the re-used part finally gives up the ghost). AND hand over the pile of used parts to the next owner. If he/she does not appreciate it, do not sell your used vehicle to that person! Never. Easy test.
I keep all kinds of spare parts junk. My wife is always fussing about my hoarding. When something breaks around the house she is glad I have a free part to fix it with though.
Rusty, dry spark plug threads. Spark plugs not torqued down. All spark plug wires loose. Permatex copper anti seize PLEASE PEOPLE, it's made for a reason. Excellent diag Ivan.
My wife is always giving me crap for saving stuff like (good) extra parts just in case...they come in handy many times! And you saved the customer some money too which I hope they appreciated!
Boom! I have the same coyote problem! Nice fix on the wire. Normally that would have costed the customer a set of wires and a trip to town for you. Great job!
Ivan... SAFETY GLASSES, my man -- they were right there. Now that I'm old enough to know guys who've had accidents, but I'm LUCKY to be accident-free myself, I must communicate the urgency. Also, nice save on that wire 👍 (Buy some plugwire terminals and crimpers for the road kit).
I was taught to use a spray bottle too, put a couple drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid in the water it will penetrate even smaller pin holes. I have used duct tape when I had nothing else. Don't let those guys bother you. Good job!!
Ivan nice old school fix. Did it often in days gone by when cars were simple. Don't need to make everything complicated. Sometimes you make do with what you have. 👍
Thank you Ivan! That Scanner Danner Water test is amazing as well as your procedures to find easier solutions without too many complications, a lot of times in my country we have to address the solution by fixing the actual part without replacing the whole thing due to a lack of parts or too expesive parts, anyways this fixes just teach us how parts work and the engineering behind it. Once again thank you Ivan!
Thanks for the comment Argeny! What country are you from? In the Soviet Union spare parts for anything were very hard to come by so people got very creative to keep their vehicles running...guess it's still in my blood haha
I enjoy that though you have more of a formal automotive technician business you still have a shade tree mechanic mentality. This is very lose terminology as you obviously operate during hours of darkness. Keep it up.
At last! Another Subaru video! The bonus footage is strong with this one! (If my wife asks where her spray bottle of Windex is, I have it out in the garage...) Thanks, Ivan!

I installed a Diehard into my Tacoma. It lasted 14 Years. When it got replaced it was just starting to get weak, not dead all together. Amazing. I thought maybe cause the truck dosent have alot of extra crap on it using 12 v. Nice fix..No parts needed, well no new parts needed :)
It was a Die-Hard, but it also had a name that die-Hard Gave it, I remember it printed across the front, and it was 8 to 10 letters, I tried to find another one like it, but they we not to be had. I bought it before I left Houston, 2003, and replaced it in 2017, with a Naper.
I really like your videos. You have a rare common sense mixed in with technical aptitude. I always learn something from watching your videos. Great work! Thank you for sharing your tips, tricks and knowledge! Love the Coyotes too!
I am a retired electrician and worked on a bit of high voltage during my long career. When an arc happens it leave a trail that is conductive, nothing you can do short of cleaning the track of all the marks left by the arcing will stop further arcing. Replacing the boot removes the arc track, it isn't the pin holes per se that is the problem but the material left in the pin holes by the arc that is the problem. Putting a new boot on the wire in that case should be a fine fix, the wire wasn't hurt by the arc so replacing it would just be an extra expense to the customer. You remind me of my mechanic, who just called to tell me my son's car is finished, he does the work with the least expensive material.
Thanks for the insights, Roy! Yes that boot was indeed permanently ruined. Sometimes the cheap repair is the most high-quality one, if it is performed with care :)
The safety glasses grinding on the wheel as they fell was hilarious. Somewhere several safety police have lost their minds after seeing that. But good example of how the dielectric grease is suppose to be smeared off the contact point by the tight contact. If not, you get a baked on dielectric finish.
This is perhaps TH-cam's best misfire video. Mine is also number 2 but older Subie 1996. I suspect it's the cable and will likely swap it out. The problem with the tests you did water or meter is that it won't necessarily detect all problems with the cable. Also misfires can be caused by half a dozen other things, like a sticky injector causing a random misfire.

Great work Ivan 👍 I agree with your head gasket hypothesis :) I used the water method plenty of times(don't tell Keith), I usually mix it with soap to keep it from drying out so quickly(don't tell Keith x2) 😆
Ivan. (I'm still laughing at the following Subaru incident, ha, ha, h,a) Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the video by Paul Danner. Classic, with you, Eric and Paul all together. If I was there (and I'm an Old Guy) I'd seek you, Eric and Paul out, for an autograph - no B.S. :) That get together with Eric the Car Guy reminded me of a lot of "Fly Ins" I used to go to - great times are always had by all. And, I wanted to tell you that I have learned a great deal from you, Eric and Paul. And for us out here in "don't know crap" land, it's all free information! I take notes. :)Used to (in my previous life) work Avionics Maintenance on USAF aircraft. As you have always said, it's sometimes the little things that can wreck a system. Gotta look for those "clues."Thanks, Ivan
So awesome, that water spray tip so simple yet so effective. I have an 05 forester i’m currently working on with a cylinder 2 misfire, has blue ngk spark wires. I’m thinkin no way it’s gonna do the same thing you showed in the video. Wouldn’t you know it’s arching from the boot at the coil in the same location as yours. Thanks for the quick and easy demonstration.
Sweet fix Ivan. Again, you don't need a catchy sign off because your thing is 'bonus footage.' Nobody else does that! Congrats on 40k subs! Thanks Ivan!
Thanks for this, very straight forward.. I'm wondering if u can give a 2nd opinion on what I'm missing? 06 Forester threw. C2 code, upon inspection I needed to do new plug, wires coil. Drove good for a day then it thew a C4 code.. recheck everything and all looks good, hmm ok next I check injector resistance at 5ohms in a cold ass garage.. decide to swap them and see if the code follows, it didn't, still C4.. ok let's do a pressure test.. all cylinder from 160-175psi... While I was doing that decided to swap the plugs between 2 and 4, issue still persists... Anything I'm overlooking?? Thx
Your channel should be sponsored by a major duct tape manufacturer 🤣🤣 You remind my of that guy in that tv series Macgyver! He could fix everything with duct tape and some coins😉
DiagnoseDan...that show is back on here in the states!! Some young guy, and one of the CSI LAS VEGAS tv show guys!! Lol They ought to get Ivan to write some of their duct tape episodes, for them!! Then he could write an episode where Mac is flying on AIR FORCE ONE with P.O.T.U.S. when the engines fail due to a fuel leak in the center tank, that Mac fixes with an old HONDOO intake snorkel and duct tape to seal it all up!!

Mine is cylinders 3,4, and 6. 2006 subaru tribeca b9 3.0. I'm just starting. All I've done so far is scan it and drive it. It ran really rough and shut off. I'll pull the plugs and check the coil packs.
Another great Fix from PHAD ! Maybe that was Keith going though the animals screaming as you sprayed the water. I wonder if scanner danner learned that water spray at pep boys ? . Love the extra footage . I hope you film thehead gasket repair. Do you ever use WD-40 or silicon spray to help water proof the wires ?
Eric O indeed did a spark plug wire repair video. I think it was for a vehicle that the rats chewed through the plug wires. I learned the proper way to do those plug wires through his video. But, I keep forgetting to use dielectric grease and regret it a year later when I check, and replace if needed, the spark plugs. I'll hopefully remember the grease should I get hired as a mechanic very soon. While we're quoting other TH-camrs.... And there's your dinner!

Keeping older vehicle running is the best thing for the environment; as long as they run clean. Reusing reclaimed parts is also beneficial. So many "modern" cars are almost disposable; use them a while and then toss em out like old razor blades.
Coyotes howling at dusk is a roll call, if there is missing members they will mate. Still waiting for you to go back to Russia and work on the car. Great videos as always.
Similar issue to my 4Runner that you did a similar water bottle test on :) Gotta say the easiest solution to plug wires is to just go OEM. I paid $60 for Toyota wires ($20 more than NGK) and they were all nicely pre-routed in a loom and extra little clips, the boots all clicked in perfectly, compared to the mishaped NGK ends that caused that misfire issue in the wet. I wonder how much an OE Subie set costs?
In a bind, I would've wrapped electrical tape around the end. It seems to hold up for a couple weeks even. Not duct tape in this situation. ..but even better, you had a spare boot. I'd love to see that list though! I did see that post.
Cuba, it was so awesome to meet you in person at ASA Super Saturday!! I have the deepest respect for what you are doing as a mobile technician. I mean from cars to dump trucks to backhoes...that is very impressive. Keep up the great work!!

Very nice diagnosis & fix. Wonder who attempted to put plugs & wires on it ? Hey call Eric & ask him if he did a white ROO, plugs & wires, then tell him what you found. Say you figured it was his work LOL.
I've always used the ol spray bottle on cars with spark plug wires as the start of my misfire diags with great success in finding intermittent codes, including the dreaded Po300 codes, where scan data doesn't show individual misfire history nor live misfire counters. I even use it on sensor/actuator connectors that I find suspect, and have fixed a lot of intermittent codes that way. Hey, it beats spraying carb cleaner right? LOL

1 2 subaru baby
you should be sponsored by subaru and about time the wife had a classic forester lol .
Yeah can't beat OEM. Might have to buy them separately one at a time from Subaru lol
Subaru OEM are around 50$, NGK can be found for 35-45$, so really not saving much.
Thank you Ivan. Good job. I appreciate your videos. Have a good weekend.
Thanks Billy you too!
Same here cylinder number 2 on my 2006 Subaru sti po302
In a bind, I would've wrapped electrical tape around the end. It seems to hold up for a couple weeks even. Not duct tape in this situation. ..but even better, you had a spare boot.
I'd love to see that list though! I did see that post.
On a side note? Going to super sat? Is that why you're up so early? See ya there if you do!
Yup on the PA Turnpike right now! Traffic is stopped must be a bad accident ahead :/
Cuba, it was so awesome to meet you in person at ASA Super Saturday!! I have the deepest respect for what you are doing as a mobile technician. I mean from cars to dump trucks to backhoes...that is very impressive. Keep up the great work!!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Yesterday just replays in my head! What an event! What awesome like minded people, with genuine passion or hunger in progressing in their fields. I'm in awe and deep admiration for those that were teaching and some of those that were training, such as yourself, Trained by Tech group, Keith, Mario, and I'm sure I'm missed a few.
It was an extreme honor & pleasure to have met all of you. Now I'm looking forward to see what Vision has to offer! 😄
Very nice diagnosis & fix. Wonder who attempted to put plugs & wires on it ? Hey call Eric & ask him if he did a white ROO, plugs & wires, then tell him what you found. Say you figured it was his work LOL.
someone done watched them "uuuuu-tube veedeo" and became an instant pro =p
Ivan I think you are quicker than Kieth!!!! I like your style buddy!!!!
But Keith does 20 cars a day at this pace so I can't keep up anyways lol
I'm so glad you didn't fix it with duct-tape!
My brother has aways used an unlit propane torch as you run the torch tip over vacuum lines a leek will be detected when the engine speed increases.
great as always Ivan !
Coyotes are a real nuisance
Ivan good lesson and repair thxs again nice video....
LOL
