- In this episode, I put my road tune up against the tuner. The Atom X is installed and working well with the 4A-GE. I spent two weeks driving and recording runs to get as good a road tune as I could get without blowing up the motor. The tuner will then use the dyno to see how much more power there was to unlock.
The Link ECU is a solid option for the 4A-GE. The original ECU's are getting old and can suffer from aging related issues such as blown capacitors. A Link ECU is a modern solution that also comes with a good bump in performance.

Currently in the process of trying to swap a 4age silvertop 20v into my stock 95 corolla
My mechanic says everything looks great, I just need a new wiring harness, a new ecu and a new fuse box and it should he smooth sailing

Such a tidy car. I had an ae82 (Corolla gt in NZ) limited edition, leather seats and red carpet.. wish I'd kept it. It would lose traction in 2nd gear any time you wished 😂

congrats... nice power gains I predicted 135-140 whp... looks like I was off juuuust a bit... the good thing is, now when you do other mods you can retune for those...
I say job well done in how you managed to tune it within 5hp of a professional tuner! Those few extra ponies will definitely come in handy.
Especially with that 15hp bump about 3/4 way up the revs, for what you're doing it's a much appreciated addition.
And similarly so is the case for anyone doing the same thing as you!
All in all it's welcome information for a lot of 4A-GE enthusiasts.
I'da gone aftermarket ECU but the ECU+adapter/wiring are usually around 1500 for 20v's (Just checked MRP and I was pretty much dot on).
But that's to be expected, the issue is the additional 500-750 tune which I have a hard time justifying up against the extra few ponies.
Super exciting to follow your content man! My AE111 will be getting a tune soon too! Tomei Poncams, HKS 4-1 long runner headers and a 2.25 inch exhaust system. Strongly recommend the cams! Keen to see the FXGT tear up the AutoX/track again ;)
I still haven't decided on which cams I'll be installing but the Poncams do seem appealing! Sounds like your AE111 is going to be awesome!

Get yourself a decent one and take it over. I've had mine for almost 9 years now. Did all sorts of upgrades. Coilovers motor swap ect. Best car on the road ma se kin😎

Nice! It is your fault I dove into getting a stand-alone ECU as well... Good thing I got the MonsoonX, but I still find the 6 aux outputs kinda limiting (and I'm still on dizzy). :P
can you do a quick youtube vlog getting into more detail about what limitations the atom has vs the monsoon if you have the 20V? I'd like to know exactly what makes the monsoon better for the 20V.

How did you guys install the knock sensor with the purple wire? I thought the blacktop 20v had it's own knock sensor or is that one not accurate enough for the ECU?
Also now it's time to install cams and see how much power you gain.

Whats your strategy for ignition timing limit for the road tuning? Did you had any knock sensor in action or you just tune the fueling and let the ignition stay with whatever comes with the mapping?

The Link st205 pnp has virtually the same pinout as the 4age blacktop 20v ecu.
I gain 10whp from a used Haltech Sport 500 ECU. Now its 150whp. Didn't even use COP.
Wait, you gave the cheaper AdamX ecu WITH coil on plugs? Or did you end up getting the better ecu?
Small question: Can a 4A-GE intake system (whether it be 20 valve itbs or 16 valve single throttle) work with a 4A-C?

Will the AtomX ECU work for a 7A-FE or even a 7A-GE build?

So now that you’ve used both a Megasquirt and a Link, what one would you recommend for the average DIY guy? I’m building a 7age, 16v with ITB’s, and planning to do COP and eventually turbo, maybe, but not right away for the turbo. Thanks for all you do and share, cheers.
There's also a Speeduino if you're on budget and don't mind doing (almost) everything yourself.

How close do the engine mounts line up with the 20v to the original 16v mounts?
They line up perfectly. The only side that doesn’t line up is for the c160 trans mount.
I have a question, if it is a 4age 20v blacktop, why it only produces 125-136hp if in theory that engine should give 160-170h?

Its essentially stock power at the moment,
The hp readings are at the wheels. The stock hp rating for a Blacktop (165) is at the crank.

Hey dude can you possibly send me the Tune on a flash drive. Save me the time and money with my swap.I have this ecu but it's all plug and play patch harness to my 20v harness.the 20valve swap I'm putting in a 96 corolla it's all jdm. I acquired a front cut from a GT APEX so it all plug and play for the most part.

tbh I think that you have wasted a lot of money on ITBs if your car only made 135 bhp with such a good exhaust system and a free flow air intake, that engine is worth 135 bhp without ITBs. Perhaps if you had wild CAMs installed then ITBs may be worth investing in.
ITBs are standard on 20V engines
