I'd go with I WANT A SUSHPANTS T-SHIRT. Sorry, couldn't help myself was just to excited to maybe win a shirt. I go with valves and cams.there are tons of videos already on exhaust systems. It's rare to see anyone takle NA power gains in the detail your videos are known for.
def ECU, then its valves and cam combo, last is a 4-1 headers With the standalone ECU. any mods will impact the engine performance greatly. Esp the valves and cam. You can engage the VVT early or later depending on your preference. 4-1 header for the 4AGE 20V will make it screams louder in the higher rpms. Making the throttle blips more enjoyable.
Installed my mrp coils last week, an absolute treat compared to the blown original shocks. Very good upgrade, glad you too are enjoying them. And oh yeah I want Sushpants t-shirt!
I'm from new Zealand and it is good to see mrp products used overseas Mrp are really good. I think that you should do camshafts and valve Springs first.
there's a couple [not Google-silly autocorrect] suggestions below regarding the next upgrade, but personally I think I'd do the ECU 1st... you can fine tune the itbs which may or may not yield more hp... and you can fine tune for cams and exhaust later once you get them with the added benefit of being able to share your results with each new mod... dyno verified of course
Man your car gets better and better! I'd personally do an exhaust for an even better sound, but be careful because it's a 1.6 so it's easy to fall in the trap of a "fartcan" exhaust, which nobody wants for obvious reasons. Also, I want a Sushpants T-Shirt!
love the 80s B-movie music you used for this video. Also the only real upgrade you can do for the 4age 20v is turbocharge it. Getting higger cams will be a headache will only gain about 10-15 hp depending on the profile you run. Another downside to camming it is youll have to dump the vvti and the car won’t run nearly as smooth
But turboing the 4age would make it lose its responsiveness. I think the corolla is light enough that an extra 20-30whp would make it pretty quick. It can hang with a b18 right now (thanks to the close ratio c160). I’m gonna stick in the biggest cam I can while still retaining the vvt. Because you’re right, if I lose the vvt, I lose the smoothness and low end power.
sushpants yes I agree with you there I prefer N/A over turbo myself especially since most of my aggressive driving is on done on gouge. Look into 7age build good bang for buck, I have heard of people doing it with the 20v head but it’s mostly done on 16v heads. I got a spare small port head if your interested. 7age = loads more torque😎😀
Also you should check out matrix garage the guys they are real 4age gurus. They make custom cams for 4age and can definitely point you in the right direction
great video, nice and quick compared to some of the other youtubers who would have turned this into a 30 minute video with 6 ad breaks haha absolutely perfect car, one of my all time favourite Toyota's I just really love the accents they added to it. I want a sushpants t-shirt!!
I like ur videos alot cause I'm a big corolla fan. I'm driving my second corolla after I sold my first one. I just love the way they drive. My second corolla is a upgrade from my first corolla.
Sushpants in Toyota guy and especially a corolla enthusiasts. I appreciate ur videos and work alot. I'm from Cape Town in South Africa.. My hope is that oneday u will see my comment😊
I think ECU as it'd be great to see the difference over the stock ecu without the other mods. Awesome video dude, stoked for you. Would love a shirt. 20v ftw.
Love the sound of this thing. I’d say ECU from the get go, that way any mods you make from here on in can be managed and configured with more flexibility.
I've fixed all the small component seal oil leaks and started upgrading my 97 corolla bz touring wagon. It's got a swapped c160 lsd 6mt to go with the blacktop (which i got painted bright pink with MANY different sparkles haha) love this car and will be getting some coilovers soon for it once I've got my new grill and installed my new headlights. After that I plan for the MRP willwood brake kit and then many engine upgrades using MRP parts (I live in New Zealand myself so it's great being close to the guys here) Love your channel and its helped me so much already. Also "I want a sushpants T-shirt" ♡
I swear, every time a video comes out, I end up scouring craigslist listings for a good week or two looking for an FX16 also, I want a Sushpants t-shirt!
I want a suspants tshirt! Man how did I miss this one?!! Benn looking forword for your coilover install and it came out just as expected! I want to get some coilovers for my corolla as well!! Keep the videos coming!!
A good standalone would definitely make sense for getting the most out of any further mods down the line. A full exhaust system would be a close second though, something subtle as to not overpower the glorious sound of the throttle bodies. Btw, I want a Sushpants t-shirt!
You should upgrade the brakes first. Even a standard pad + disc + brake line + brake fluid combo on fresh calipers will be a huge bonus in terms of brake feel and fade resistance. I'd also consider a brake master cylinder brace for added brake feel. Then I'd do the ECU, exhaust and cams, followed by a remap. Oh and I want a Sushpants t-shirt please. :-)
High five then, I did exactly that in my car, right down to the brake fluid (though I chose Ferodo DS2500 pads, they're quite popular and easy to buy in this part of the world). With the suspension and brakes out of the way I'd do the ECU first, so that you can do a remap according to the modifications you make. After that I'd do a header (4-2-1 for a broader powerband, 4-1 for top-end power) and exhaust (possibly decat too, if you have the standard unit still on), followed by a properly designed airbox, and some relatively mild cams (assuming you're keeping the stock pistons and rods).
i think that thing needs exhaust work, and i think my ae92 needs those mrp ball joints and rear camber plates for my fortune auto's. also I want a Sushpants T-shirt!
Hi there, I just purchased a ae82 liftback, with the basic 4ac carby engine. I was hoping to put a blue top in it at some stage but for now am doing it up slowly, and watching a few of your videos on your 4age hatch is giving me hope and ideas
Love the videos. I have a 20v in my Westfield (Lotus 7 replica) and am curious to see the power upgrade development for ideas for my car... and I want a sushpants t-shirt.
I WANT A SUSH PANTS T SHIRT!! Haha, love the vids man, glad to see fx16s are still kicking, also the first upgrade i believe that would be the most beneficial are cams and valve springs, just a thought, keep up the great vids dude!
sushpants i hope so too man! Id love to own one, theyre just so cool. Also with the upgrades, i thought more about it, the order id do it in would be cams, exhaust, ecu, and then a tune, just a suggestion!
I think you should do Exhaust first, then cams and valves as you should tune your engine after that, I think the ECU should followed after valves and cams.
You should do the exhaust system first. My AW11 20v has a healthy 147 WHP, stock engine with just a lightweight flywheel + pulleys and 2,5 inch exhaust system. BTW... I WANT A SUSHPANTS T-SHIRT!
Great vid. Loved it. Do you have the 5 valve. I do not yet. But on my old 300K 4AGE 16V that I bought new. I Ported and polished, (very little porting, those suckers are big already) matched intake with exhaust ports, shaved the head till true. and put it back together. All new valves etc. My off the line power really woke up. Good luck. Love the 4AGE / AE 82 , 86. Wayne.
since you seem to have access to a dyno, i think a good option would be engine management. you can go an adaptronic m1200 with the COP kit and show the differences in power from the stock ecu, and then fiddle with different ecu settings to see what makes or breaks power (eg. how far can you advance timing, etc.). you can get the ecu + cop kit from smr btw. also ill go the t-shirt thing cheers :P
there's so many ECU's to choose from. I used to have a Megasquirt on my Miata that worked pretty well, but i need to find out which ECU the local tuner knows best.
sushpants other options are also haltech which has a 20v loom iirc, and there's a 20v kit from link who are great, im tossing up between adaptronic and link for mine, but if you look on the old ae111 forums everyone recommends running an adaptronic on a bt 20v. but yeah good idea to see what your tuner's good with first
I've been looking into the haltech because Battle Garage RS. I have to see if the tuner knows how to work with a haltech. I think i will switch to COPs when i go standalone.
ah right fair enough, well as far as the other options you can purchase adaptronic kit from smr, or a link kit but you have to buy your own coilpacks (denso or similar should do). here's the links if youre interested, and also COPs are a good idea, should definitely do it if youre already going standalone anyway. adaptronic: www.smr2u.com/products/adaptronic-cop-combo link: xcessivemanufacturing.com/toyota-20v-ecu-pnp-kit-link-monsoon.html
Fantastic video, I miss driving my FX so much right now. It's been in the driveway for about a month now while I wait for money to fix it :( I need my fix. “I want a Sushpants t-shirt.”
It should be, I need to replace my timing belt and front right wheel bearing, there has been some steering issues. But I have what sounds like some kind of valve train noise, so I figured I would take the head off and check clearances while I'm at it. Just want to get it all at once rather than having the car on jack stands multiple times. Dat old car life.
Great looking AE82! I'm getting BC coilovers for my AE92 soon. I could barely fit 195/50 R15s on mine as well (Had to roll the fenders in the rear) :/. Also "I want a SushPants T-shirt".
Another great video, I’ll have to see if they make a set for my AE92 coupe. As for power upgrades, I think a 2 1/2 inch catback would be a good start, and maybe you could do a comparison and see which mufflers sound the best? “I want a Sushpants shirt”, and you outta think about making slaps too
Thanks One Rusty Datsun. But i have to tell you, I've been trying to figure out what slaps are for the last day. Are slaps stickers? That's my best guess.
I have a question and it deals with security. Specifically how you keep ur FX from getting stolen? Parts are a rare and highly desirable to thieves. You need a club, an alarm and a kill switch to the fuel pump. Do a video on that please!
Damn i'd suggest an lsd transaxle before doing engine upgrades, its already wheel spinning 😂 but otherwise i would suggest exhaust system (ramhorn headers from smr fx. And 2.5" full exhaust system) and then do ecu, cams, springs etc 😁
Great Video man, I'm looking forward into upgrading my suspension also on my Ae100 corolla, currently I'm getting way to much understeer at our local Autocross events, thinking of getting BC racing coilovers and getting a thicker rear sway bar
But cams and valves would be the hardest to do! You gotta build up to it :) I agree, though. Cams and valves would probably give the greatest increase in power.
Buenos días amigo. Conoce usted tiendas de repuestos donde sea posible adquirir lámparas delanteras para el corolla FX16? Le agradezco su colaboración.
I want a Sushpants T-shirt. AWESOME VID MATE! My AE82 is very similair setup to yours but BC coilovers and 16v 4AGE Bigport. Wish i could touge battle you. Im your biggest Australian fan.
Got a Decat and Fujitsubo backbox on my 20v ae111 not for the power but the sound but Ya power probably ecu first but that won't do much by itself without other mods as Toyota did fairly well getting power out of the factory. If going for ecu need to be getting some other mods aswell like exhaust, cams etc if not its a waist of time. Oh Ya I want a sushpants t-shirt

4-1 header for the 4AGE 20V will make it screams louder in the higher rpms. Making the throttle blips more enjoyable.
Your vids about this corrola are much better than 2k+ super cars vids
Your car looks clean
I just ordered a set of MRP coilovers for my AW11 because of this video!
Nice, let me know how you like them!
Your videos are getting better and better! Definitely go the exhaust first, let that 20v sing.
I am glad that I found this channel. A real gem.
Thanks!
Installed my mrp coils last week, an absolute treat compared to the blown original shocks. Very good upgrade, glad you too are enjoying them.
And oh yeah
I want Sushpants t-shirt!
Exhaust first...cams next. I'd love to have a Sushpants shirt to wear while driving my FX16 GTS! Keep spreading the love!
Standalone! The stock ECU really holds back the 20v or so i hear. I want a sushpants t-shirt!
That's what i've heard too, but from the people trying to sell me an ECU
I'm from new Zealand and it is good to see mrp products used overseas Mrp are really good. I think that you should do camshafts and valve Springs first.
MRP stuff is awesome.

That engine note is to die for, also i love the music you used for the video. Great job :) I want a Sushpants T-shirt.
Exhaust and Ecu. Then cams and valves. In the order. No canister exhaust

great video, nice and quick compared to some of the other youtubers who would have turned this into a 30 minute video with 6 ad breaks haha
absolutely perfect car, one of my all time favourite Toyota's I just really love the accents they added to it.
I want a sushpants t-shirt!!
:D that's what i was trying to avoid. I didn't want a video that dragged on too long.
Your videos are awesome, you've made me want an FX-16, currently in the market for one. We need more content! I want a Sushpants t-shirt.
You should get one! They are a lot of to drive.
Rad little car you have man! I reckon go for cams next 😏 and I'd love a sushpants shirt too! 👌
Definitely ECU-exhaust-cams and springs. It is also a good idea to upgrade the stock brakes. BTW I want a shushpants t-shirt!!!
Awesome video buddy! One of your best videos yet. Plus i would totally rock a sushpants shirt lol.
Thanks Bob!
sushpants
Cool to see kiwi products :)
Love the content, I have an ST190 Corona liftback with lots done to it, go Toyota!
I think ECU as it'd be great to see the difference over the stock ecu without the other mods. Awesome video dude, stoked for you. Would love a shirt. 20v ftw.
The long awaited video had arrived great video man
Yep, I pushed myself to finish it before the weekend.
sushpants what are you gonna do next? Big brake?
Whats next? Big brake kit? Maybe make a video on anorher trackday?
Love the sound of this thing. I’d say ECU from the get go, that way any mods you make from here on in can be managed and configured with more flexibility.
I've fixed all the small component seal oil leaks and started upgrading my 97 corolla bz touring wagon. Oh man, you could probably just go straight to their shop and pick up parts :) i wish i was so lucky.
sushpants I might have to as I'm planning on doing a a full build next year. Be good to chat with the guys there.
I swear, every time a video comes out, I end up scouring craigslist listings for a good week or two looking for an FX16
also, I want a Sushpants t-shirt!
The Corolla FX's seem to get snatched up really quick any time they pop up on craigslist.
I want a suspants tshirt!
Man how did I miss this one?!! Benn looking forword for your coilover install and it came out just as expected! I want to get some coilovers for my corolla as well!!
Keep the videos coming!!
Gosh this is a beautiful car, wish it was selled in SEA, only the sedan version was launched here back then
I always loved the FX16 & AE92 coupes...clean car
Love the sound of the twin cam btw😁
I'd definitely go exhaust first as it's always the bottleneck for other engine upgrades. Also, I want a Sushpants T-shirt!!!!
Exhaust system and wheels and tyres . “I want a dish pants t-shirt.” Love the car
I want a sushpants tshirt! ECU should be next upgrade, that way you can take full advantage of the eventual exhaust and cams update s
My intrax springs worked really well on my fx over tokico's. Go for the cam and valve springs. I want a sushpants t-shirt!
A good standalone would definitely make sense for getting the most out of any further mods down the line. A full exhaust system would be a close second though, something subtle as to not overpower the glorious sound of the throttle bodies. Btw, I want a Sushpants t-shirt!
Not gonna lie I'm loving this channel
Exhaust first, then ECU & Valvetrain at the same time to take full advantage of them.
Also, I want a Sushpants T-shirt!
Nice comparison. I want a Sushpants t-shirt.
The brakes have been done exactly like you describe. I have Motul RBF600, new standard disc and Hawk HP pads. So far it works pretty well.
High five then, I did exactly that in my car, right down to the brake fluid (though I chose Ferodo DS2500 pads, they're quite popular and easy to buy in this part of the world).
With the suspension and brakes out of the way I'd do the ECU first, so that you can do a remap according to the modifications you make. i think that thing needs exhaust work, and i think my ae92 needs those mrp ball joints and rear camber plates for my fortune auto's.
also I want a Sushpants T-shirt!
You need a wheel alignment. The front wheels will be set with toe-out now. That is what has caused the tyres to wear on the inner edge.
The alignment before didn’t have that much negative camber and 0 toe. The thing that roasted the tires was time and burnouts :)
your content is awesome man! keep on going :)
Hi there, I just purchased a ae82 liftback, with the basic 4ac carby engine. I was hoping to put a blue top in it at some stage but for now am doing it up slowly, and watching a few of your videos on your 4age hatch is giving me hope and ideas
Exhaust And intake then go for the ecu and tune and motor mounts if not done already so excited to see you next mods !
Love the videos. I have a 20v in my Westfield (Lotus 7 replica) and am curious to see the power upgrade development for ideas for my car... and I want a sushpants t-shirt.
nice one.
you should do an exhaust upgrade next .
cant wait sushsie
I WANT A SUSH PANTS T SHIRT!! Haha, love the vids man, glad to see fx16s are still kicking, also the first upgrade i believe that would be the most beneficial are cams and valve springs, just a thought, keep up the great vids dude!
I hope my videos save fx16s from getting thrown away! I have been eye balling cams and springs :)
sushpants i hope so too man! Id love to own one, theyre just so cool. Also with the upgrades, i thought more about it, the order id do it in would be cams, exhaust, ecu, and then a tune, just a suggestion!
Exhaust first for good flow. Love from a fellow rolla owner from Australia. I want a sushpants t-shirt!
I think you should do Exhaust first, then cams and valves as you should tune your engine after that, I think the ECU should followed after valves and cams.
Cams and valves would be awesome to hear! Also I want a sushpants tshirt!!!
It sounds so good! 😍
valves and cam first then exhaust . you can do ecu later because corollas can be driven on stock ecu
You should do the exhaust system first. My AW11 20v has a healthy 147 WHP, stock engine with just a lightweight flywheel + pulleys and 2,5 inch exhaust system.
BTW... I WANT A SUSHPANTS T-SHIRT!
Headers upgrade to see if its have an additional power.
Great vid. Loved it. Do you have the 5 valve. I do not yet. But on my old 300K 4AGE 16V that I bought new. All new valves etc. My off the line power really woke up. Good luck. Love the 4AGE / AE 82 , 86. Wayne.
I swapped in the 20v blacktop 4AGE. I rebuilt that engine from the ground up, it is a proper screamer.
Full exhaust. Ecu and cams and springs at the same time so you can tune it all in one day m
Such a unique build! ECU and I want a Sushpants T-Shirt!!
I wanted one of these be back in the day but it cost a little too much for my credit to carry it looks good.
since you seem to have access to a dyno, i think a good option would be engine management.
you can go an adaptronic m1200 with the COP kit and show the differences in power from the stock ecu, and then fiddle with different ecu settings to see what makes or breaks power (eg. how far can you advance timing, etc.). you can get the ecu + cop kit from smr btw.
also ill go the t-shirt thing cheers :P
there's so many ECU's to choose from. I used to have a Megasquirt on my Miata that worked pretty well, but i need to find out which ECU the local tuner knows best.

Awesome episode man as always! Keep your 82 clean and awesome!
I thing for the mod the best will to start with an ECU!
Thanks blakslayer. ECU and Exhaust seem to be the top suggestions. I'll eventually get all the mods done :)
sushpants can't wait to see next mod done to your 82!
Heh, me too! It might end up being which performance part I can get my hands on first.
Fantastic video, I miss driving my FX so much right now. It's been in the driveway for about a month now while I wait for money to fix it :( I need my fix.
“I want a Sushpants t-shirt.”
aww, that sucks. Hopefully you get your FX going soon!
Now it looks awesome.
first upgrade should be ECU.
Great looking AE82! I'm getting BC coilovers for my AE92 soon. I could barely fit 195/50 R15s on mine as well (Had to roll the fenders in the rear) :/. Also "I want a SushPants T-shirt".
Those damn tiny Toyota wheel wells *shakes fist*
definately exhaust first ,let that engine breaaathh. Also i want a sushpants t shirt
I want a sushpants T-shirt.
Exhaust next . Ecu near the end to get the most decent tune out of the Blacktop
keep up the good work bro!!
I want a Sushpants tshirt! Love your videos. I would really like to see an exhaust build video next.
Cams first, then ECU, then Exhaust. Nice car btw
It does do a decent amount of wheel spinning :) a 1.5 way LSD is on the horizon for the Corolla.
Ring up MRP to build you a crazy engine. They are one of the best 4A-GE builders.
heh, but I want to build a crazy engine :) MRP does have some pretty wild builds.
They've squeeze out over 210whp still at 1.6 litres, yet the powerband actually favours mid-range torque, it's for rallying.
I think exhaust first then cams and valve springs and for the last the ecu
I suggest doing an exhaust system first then the stand alone ECU!!
Great Video man, I'm looking forward into upgrading my suspension also on my Ae100 corolla, currently I'm getting way to much understeer at our local Autocross events, thinking of getting BC racing coilovers and getting a thicker rear sway bar
Physical mods like exhaust and cams first then ECU so you dont have to retune for the exhaust/cams separately.
Love the style of your videos! I want a sushapants T-shirt.. To match my ae82!
Do exhaust first then focus on a good tune, 4ages really benefit from a free flowing exhaust.
Replacing the old catalytic converter with a high flow unit has been on my checklist.
Great video as always. Go for a full exhaust. Also....I want a sushpants t-shirt!
I think the exhaust system is the best mod to start "I want a sushpants t-shirt"
i think you should do the ecu then exhaust them cams and srpings i want a sushpants tshirt also i love your corolla
what is the difference between GTS and GTI model? the biggest improvement for it is to convert it from FWD to RWD
Corolla looking good! i would go for exhaust next oh and "I want a Sushpants T-shirt."
i say exhaust, then ECU, then cams and valve springs so the reprogramming of that new ecu wont be much.
And, I want a shushpants t-shirt!!!!
Do the exhaust first.
And hell yes, I want that sushpants tshirt!
Exhaust, then cams
In my opinion, try to get the mods that really help improve performance like a new set of cams and valves.
But cams and valves would be the hardest to do! You gotta build up to it :) I agree, though. Cams and valves would probably give the greatest increase in power.
SUPER WHITE WHALE I don't even remember the last time I've seen that car side note your content is great thanks for the video keep it up
Buenos días amigo.
Conoce usted tiendas de repuestos donde sea posible adquirir lámparas delanteras para el corolla FX16?
Le agradezco su colaboración.
I say a full exhaust system first and then a standalone! I want a sushpants shirt!
Valves and an ecu would be 👌 the exhaust might overthrow the ITB sound. Sush pant t-shirt plzzzzz

Oh and
I want a Sushpants T-Shirt :)
Id do it like this
-Exhaust
-Ecu & Camshafts
-perhaps different ITB's?
If still stiff reduce the preload, should help
ECU will set a good base for future mods. Also, I want a Sushpants T shirt!
exhaust then the standalone ecu,
Got a Decat and Fujitsubo backbox on my 20v ae111 not for the power but the sound but Ya power probably ecu first but that won't do much by itself without other mods as Toyota did fairly well getting power out of the factory. If going for ecu need to be getting some other mods aswell like exhaust, cams etc if not its a waist of time. Oh Ya I want a sushpants t-shirt
