Super Steering Upgrade for '87 Corolla FX16 - PT3

  • The AE82 Corolla gets a steering upgrade that transforms the handling of the car. The new steering rack was fully rebuilt with a new steering pinion to quicken up the steering ratio. The new rack is about 2.5 turns lock to lock while the old rack was about 3.5 turns lock to lock. New AE86 inner tie-rods and custom Techno Toy Tuning tie-rod ends were used to give a tight steering feel that is also strong. The result was amazing! Watch as I progress on my journey of making the Corolla FX16 a Touge Monster!
    A big thank you to Colin for the information on the steering upgrade: @colin.pan
    Thank you to Techno Toy Tuning for making me the custom outer tie-rods!
    This upgrade should apply to AE92, AE101 and AE111 Corollas. By quickening the steering ratio you will increase the steering response and control through the corners. I was plagued with tie-rod ends that would get sloppy and give a vague steering feel. Now my Corolla can handle the power, braking and steering without being sloppy. This was one of the best upgrades that I have done for the Corolla. It's hard to find someone to repair these old steering racks but doing it yourself is a viable option.
    Let me know what's the next thing that I should work on to make the Corolla even better.
    Follow me on Instagram: @Sushpants
    Things I used for the quick steering rack upgrade:
    -ZZE110 Koyo steering rack
    -OEM ZZE110 steering rack bushings: 45517-01041, 45516-02010
    -JDM Koyo MRS steering pinion ** SEE NOTE BELOW **
    -Steering rack rebuild kit (Gates 348464)
    -OEM Toyota AE86 inner tie-rods
    -Techno Toy Tuning Outer tie-rods
    -HY-CAPACITY 8813216 adapter (put a small o-ring steering rack side and flare connection on hose side.)
    -Mobil 1 ATF, used for power steering
    NOTE: If you have a LHD Corolla, you will need to use a RHD MR-S steering pinion.
    If you have a RHD Corolla, you will need to use a LHD MR-S steering pinion.
    Koyo steering racks.
    Credit to @colin.pan for the info.
    Body Stiffening Braces used:
    -TOYOTA COROLLA (AE82) - FENDER (3 POINTS) (COMES AS A PAIR) - UR-FD3-114
    -TOYOTA COROLLA (AE82) - FRONT LOWER (4 POINTS) - UR-LA4-1191

  • @bobawatsit
    @bobawatsit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    best up grade is cylinder head work, I have done heaps, unfortunately there is a lot of maths and skill involved ....but you could spend time matching every flange on the IN side, so that the ports have NO mismatch from head to trumpet get a shop to give the IN seats a 3 or 5 angle seat job, if you keen, you can use a small flapper wheel of about 120 grit to smooth out any bad looking defects, but do not take too much material out ! making the ports bigger without doing the maths can be detrimental to HP The biggest hiccup in posts is usually a little bit down from the seats, where the port meets and more often than not leaves quite a sharp edge, put a 2 > 3 mm radius here, with out taking material from the port
    changing cams will just move the power curve up or down the rev range

    i'm surprised with lack of castor in this car.. i wouldn't be scared of going more castor .. unless that's not true castor sense chassis has built in but not shown on data .. for your gymkhana runs id put more castor like 1.5 to 2 .. depends on feel to and 2.5 neg camber front and 2.0 neg rear and put coil overs harder if can on rear tune back rear coilovers to decrease its dartiness at track.. so the car rotates hard but the neg holds the side load and the rear neg lets the car transition but hold loads when in. only good for track day.. usaully u want rear wheel cars to drive soft rear flex suspension and front wheel drive cars hard rear because rear inside wheel has to lift to get the car to rotate better . now you can go over the top but i cant see 2 neg being over top maybe castor at 2 a little bit ..go feel and your driver instinct and test and tune and preference is key to all driver nobody is the same..

    I’m so happy I’m so happy I’m so happy man! I’ve been waiting to hear your Corolla and all it’s glory again. I was smiling the whole video and so excited for your car. Steering must feel so amazing now!
    Maybe for future mods some nice recaros? Although the stock Corolla seats are also great!

      I do love the factory seats but something that holds me in better would be nice! The Corolla spent most of 2020 sitting while I was working on all the upgrades. 2021 will be a driving year!

    How much travel does the new rack have? does it give any more or less steering angle?

    • @sushpants
      @sushpants  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new rack has the same travel as the original (both racks are same length). Steering angle seems to be unchanged, but it's already pretty decent.

    Alright... I'm gonna have to do this rack swap. The T3 tie rod ends are super boss too. I just did coilover threads sitting on the OEM perch with 250# springs this weekend. I feel that "magic" you speak of. Adding more spring to the front end gives it like 15 more horsepower because it can put it down on the ground better out of a corner. Still waiting to see if my body can take the punishment of 250F/350R springs at rallycross :)

    • @sushpants
      @sushpants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The T3 tie rod ends really are the bees knees, especially compared to the regular end. I think the body will be fine as long as you stay off the bump stops.

      I think they should so long as you have a Koyo rack. The current rack is out of ZZE110 (check out part 1 from the series)

  • @SpacedOdyssey

    I just got hold of a PS Rack from an AE92 Levin GT-Z, 2.5 turns lock to lock.
    It will be going on to my1991 AE92 Corolla Gti 16v (UK)
    The original PS Rack was around 3.7 turns L2 L, so it should improve the steering feel .
    I also have fitted Eibach progressive spring kit, so it will be interesting to see how it all works out.
    I have to say that fitting Poly bushes was the worst thing that I ever did to my corolla imo, they totally destroyed the ride quality

    Just noticed that your rear toe is very strongly inwards when reading your papers, I'm guessing its a solid rear axle, but if possible, try to find a solution to it. I have the same thing going on with my K10 Micra and I will do the most reasonable thing and build my own double wishbone rear suspension, obviously :)

    • @sushpants
      @sushpants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's actually independent rear suspension back there. The balance of the car right now is fairly neutral at the limit. Turn in harder and the rear steps out or give it gas and it falls back in line.
