Hey Tom! Absolutely love your no-nonsense approach to golf. I picked up golf at the tail end of last year and was overwhelmed by the million "secrets" of golf and found myself quickly discouraged by how complex some creators made the game appear. Your videos are not only easy to comprehend but have transformed my golf game where I'm consistently playing in the low 90s as someone who has only played for less than 8 months. Truly appreciate your content!
Welcome to this greatest of all games, Zach, and congratulations on your dramatic improvement!! Totally agree. It almost seems the con fusion is by design. Pick a guy like this and stick with him. Many instructors contradict themselves or will work on certain things for the wrong reasons. Themselves being #1.
I subscribe to Saguto golf about a year ago! I was shooting between 95-110 most of the time. I now shoot in the mid to low 80's every time I play and I know before this summer is over I will break 80 🤗!!! I just have to sink more putts, lol Tom is the BEST!!!!!!!!!! 👍🏼
That's AWESOME!! 💪💪 I'm thrilled to learn of your dramatic improvement, and I sincerely appreciate your kind words regarding the online school and this body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing system for all ages!! I'm 41 and have been golfing for over 25 years. I've never hit the ball more pure and "crispy" since watching your videos a few months ago (and I've watched a LOT of different golf instructors on TH-cam). Really appreciate everything I've learned from you and your simple and effective methods. My only regret is not finding you on here sooner!

Tom, just started watching your videos a few weeks ago. Ive only been playing casual golf with fiends (maybe 10 times a year) over the past 20 years. Averages were around 100. After watching just a few videos, I went to the range and implemented your fabulous techniques and shot a 92 the first time out. I flushed my 7 iron and said " That's crispy!! One of my mates new instantly at that point why my gane had improved in just one round. He watches you aswell. Can't thank you enough for all you do. Looking to improve my game even more in the future. Saguto golf is rhe best!!!

Tom, I watched 3 of your videos today emphasizing weight forward. I then went and had the most enjoyable range session in 30 years! Of course it wasn’t pure-fect, but I knew how to get back to a weight forward swing. Thank you for what you do.

Started playing golf last year after growing up playing baseball at a higher level. So to say it’s frustrating is an understatement to break old habits of a “swing”. But watching your videos and playing when I can (2 days a week because of 12 hour shifts 5 days a week) I’ve gone to shooting 120ish to now hitting consistently in the high 80s in a matter of 12 months. Thanks man, next goal is to get in the 70s
That's fabulous, Cody!! 💪💪 There are certainly some similarities between baseball and golf, but also some considerable differences that can really cause us former ballplayers some issues. Tom's teaching has changed my golf life. I grabbed and practiced several tips from YT. Worked like MAGIC. I bought his course and I'm now on my way to loving golf again. BTW, his swing technique cured that "torqued-out" pain in my back...huge plus!!! God Bless ya Tommy. Lunch on me if you come to HILTON HEAD.

I'm really happy to read all the comments about how people's games have improved so much. My story is not like those at all. I picked up the game again when my daughter got me a limited membership at the local muni. I'd quit for a few years, but was pretty happy about getting back to it. I started practicing in early March. I watched all the videos. Hit so many buckets! Pointed my shoulder at the ball, kept my arm straight, weight on the front foot, lowered my backswing a bunch, video taped my swing to make sure I was doing everything at least close to correct. Finally, after two and a half months of practice, I decided I was ready to take it from the range to the course. 101! Yea, didn't break a hundred. At least I'm not slicing it into the woods anymore. I'm hitting it great at the range. Apparently, that means nothing. I know I'm on the right track because I'm hitting it really well - at the range!!! Pretty disappointed right about now.
Hi Craig, That certainly does not mean nothing!! There has been quite a bit of dialogue in the Members' Forum of my online school on the topic of how to transport "Ranger Rick" to the golf course. We all experience that! All I can tell you is that it is part of the process, and as your practice performance becomes more and more consistent, then it's just a function of time in terms of when/how that will translate itself to the pressures and challenges of actual play. As confidence in your swing grows you should find more and more that you are playing "golf" instead of "golf swing" on the course, at which point your mechanical thoughts will be reduced to one or two at the most, and you will be nearly entirely focused on your target and not your swing. An excellent book that may help you with this is "Fearless Golf: Conquering the Mental Game" by Dr. Gio Valiante. Another book that I like is "Play Your Best Golf Now" by Lynn Marriott & Pia Nilsson. Have you considered the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? @@SagutoGolf Thanks Tom. I'm going to stick with it. Based on my results at the range, I'm sure I will start shooting better scores. You can't change your whole swing and expect it to start working after only 2-3 months.
Tom I play Chambers Bay, site of the 2015 U.S. Open as my home course. Yesterday I was 167 out on #14, with a two club wind coming right against me from the Puget Sound. Prior to incorporating your swing training, I would’ve chosen the 7 wood and hoped for the best. But after months of struggling with my swing, and now using your concept of weight forward, turning the body instead of lifting the arms, I pulled 5 iron and pured it to about 10 feet from the flag with complete confidence. My driver is going farther and straighter with a little draw, which I have never been able to hit after 50 years of playing. I’m so grateful for your teaching. Thank you thank you thank you.

@@SagutoGolf I just started golfing so your swing is the first one I’ve been learning so I don’t have any bad habits from previous swings I have to break which makes it a lot easier. I’ve been hitting it great on the range but last weekend when I went to play it’s like my swing blew up and I couldn’t hit any shots. Why do you think that is? All mental? Am I practicing too much if that’s such a thing and my swing is already tired going in? I know my muscles get tight when I’m really trying to start to put power behind my swing which throws it all off. I’m a member of your online school too btw and my dad and I watch your videos all the time. He’s the one that got me into golf and onto your page and swing technique.

Another awesome video. I have been working on hitting shots with my right arm only (trail arm). Consistency has been amazing with keeping arms straight, weight forward and focusing on my right arm in the back and downswing. SUPER CRISPY SHOTS!!!

Hey Tom. For the first time trying your method and u hit one drive about 260. I am 66 years old and about 220 was the best I could ever do. I will break 80 this year for certain if I can putt worth a crap. Thanks.

I'm glad to know that the Divot Board is helping you, Jeremiah! Uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies are on my to-do list for online school lesson content. The short answer with regard to these is to 1) Match your shoulders to the angle of the slope, 2) Widen your stance a bit for stability, 3) Understand that an uphill slope is going to add loft whereas a downhill slope will reduce loft and produce more runout, so adjust your club selection accordingly, 4) Make a practice swing next to the ball to determine your swing's low point on that particular slope, and then address the ball so that the low point is just ahead of it, and 5) Do your best to keep your center intact as you swing since any swaying will shift your low point and cause inconsistent results. Tom
I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating well with you, Eric. Thanks so much for sharing your improvement and keep up the great work!! Tom
I actually own a divot board and have practiced with it but never thought to hit an actual ball off it! It's really the best way to record your low point. Great video Tom!

Awesome. Blew off the range today to watch the PGA Championship. Gonna work on the chip shot drill in my living room during commercials, lol. Thanks for the video!
I think coincidentally I'm discovering your channel as I'm also learning to figure out that consistent low point. I think I was taught to do the whole "release the hands" thing at impact as a kid, but it seems like this is a much more consistent way to do things. It's also way easier for me to have a smooth swing without panicking about when to flip my wrists. I love the drill, cool board as well!
I sincerely appreciate your kind words and I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you! Unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant....... 😎 Consider that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). I’m doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness…. Thanks again for your message and keep up the great work! Hi Tom-Have got a divot board but this is a lesson I need to consistently HIT THE DIVOT after the ball As usual great stuff. Stay safe-Russ-You're making a great sunday morning for me.-See ya
Thanks for posting this video, great drill to help with iron shots. I often struggle with closely mown fairways, preferring a little 'cushion' of grass to get an iron into the air and I probably need to work on this low point to help with that. Separately, do you have any pointers (or made any videos) for people like me that struggle with keeping my left arm straight in the swing? I know it doesn't have to be rigidly straight but mine has always broken significantly on the backswing, leading to a short swing arc and being a short (and low) ball hitter all my 40 plus playing years. I hit the ball fairly straight so am able to play to a 12-13 handicap but I often wonder would I make an improvement in my game if I could get that straighter arm and wider arc.
I'm glad you enjoyed this video, and yes - a consistent low point will have you appreciating those tightly mown fairways with the added compression you'll be able to achieve. With regard to your lead arm breaking down, it seems to me that you are fighting your body's inability to execute a full turn. It all begins with a proper foundation. For example, weight forward 55/45 (up to 60/40 with the longer clubs), both feet flared out approximately 20 degrees with the knees similarly angled outward, arms hanging naturally from the shoulders (except for the driver, for which we push them out an inch or so to encourage more of the around-the-body motion needed for that lengthy shaft), and hands even with the inside of the lead thigh are prescribed setup features of the swing system I teach. This orientation provides for an unrestricted 45 degrees of tilted hip turn, at which point we only need to add another 45 degrees of shoulder turn for a full 90 degrees. The result is a centered, stress-free, flowing motion back and through, and a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing. For a good starting point, here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ Tom
@@SagutoGolf Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed reply - much appreciated. For sure I don't have a full shoulder turn, I didn't think that was the cause of the arm breakdown because it feels like it's broken down early in the backswing before much of a shoulder turn has taken place. I thought the lack of turn was just more the reason for my lack of power. Less flexibility in middle age might make it hard for me to get that full turn now but I have something to think about - thanks again.
Tom, I have been following you for the past 2 years when I took up golf when I was 67. My game has gone from 125+ down to shooting 90. I still had the problem of fat shots even though I tried following your advice. What finally solved my problem was I realized that I had the ball too close to my body. Thanks for the great videos.
I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating well with you, Saverio, and nice job figuring out the cause of your fat shots!! Tom, you do realize you are one of the best marriage counselors of all time right?.... case in point as a relative new golfer coming up to my one year golf anniversary.... when I started golfing I began watching you tube videos from many sources (often with conflicting info and certainly inconsistent results). Being the wise man that I am I began giving my wife golf lessons. Each lesson finished in a consistent disaster with her definitely not wanting to hear anything about golf from me.....after incorporating some of your videos into my viewing mix I started getting some results yet still inconsistent because of incorporating other teachers as well.... one day I stopped all of the other golf video instructions and focused on yours.... wallah!!! I'm not recommending what I did next yet I asked my wife if she wanted to try another lesson.... I only focused on what I had learned from you..... we had a great time..... Yesterday she asked for another lesson..... after pinching myself on the cheek in front of a mirror to make sure i wasn't dreaming I said ok...... Cheers to you improving one marriage at a time my friend. 🙂
You are indeed a very brave - and very fortunate - man..... To all others out there: for the love of all that is peaceful and tranquil, *DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!* 😆😆😆 Instead, enroll your spouse in my online and let me be the "bad guy". 😎 Great stuff, Tim. I'm new to golf and have found that learning how to hit irons is by far the hardest aspect of the game. It's just not natural to hit the ground AFTER you hit the ball -- at least not for me. Tom, this video is a must-watch for me before every visit to the links. It has helped me every hole. Thank you for your golf and teaching skills. You are the best.
Welcome to this greatest of games, Ricky!! You may find that there are quite a few "unnatural" concepts in the golf swing, particularly early on in your learning. As a very new golfer, nothing more frustrating than topping, duffing, chunking... AND when I finally hit a sweet pure shot I'm upset because I had NO IDEA why I did it OR how to re-create that feeling. I studied several Tom Saguto videos about shoulder rotation and weighting the lead foot - went to the range today and hit great crispy, clacky shot after shot. Now THIS is the next evolution in my swing and I'm ordering a Divot mat today. TOM, what clubs are you using these days? That looks like a PXG 0311?

nice one Tom, I only found your videos about 3wks ago. I have been playing on, and mostly off, for about 15yrs (yes my oldest child is also now 15 🤔) Having done nothing but the range for 3yrs, and even then it's only been 5 times over the last 2mths, my swing (and drive) had weakened considerably. I had already realised I was too high on the backswing, so lowered that, but also knew I was trying so hard to keep my head level that my entire body was swinging right then left with the swing, in addition to breaking the wrist and elbow near the top......but the head didn't stay over the ball, I just shifted horizontally. was wondering why I was inconsistent, but averaging (when clean contact) 155yds with the 7, but only 170 with the 5....and lucky to carry 210 with the big gun. Watched a couple of your vids man, and woah........ > Straight arms, weight on lead leg, same swing for everything, forget the ball (it knows what to do), reduce my backswing rotation and keep them low................ Just played Infinitum at Costa Daurada with rental woods and blades (I have never swung a blade in my life)..... Front 9 was still having flashbacks of every instruction/tip/hack ever had and trying to constantly adjust myself, and shot 58 (pretty poor, but rentals, Callaway blades, and unforgiving driver which hadn't been offset, and a pro course that I didn't know) Grabbed the wifi signal and a beer at the turn, and watched you again........... Decided to block out all the crap from previous 'best ways to improve your game' and focus on your extremely simple crispy nuggets. Back 9 shot 44.... the 7 went 170yds, 5 went 210 and the driver carried 260 over the water. (blades, rentals and no play for about 3yrs...........that would have been 88 if I had started as I finished, so was left delighted by the change, and it felt in. con. trol.) Also didn't help that every green had just been done the evening before with sand (and I didn't adjust my strokes for that) Anyway, after all of that..........THANK YOU from Scotland. Keeping at it, as you have just made things way more simple than any before, and I am aiming to get under +16 before the end of our 'summer'.
Wow - that's fantastic, Mark!! I'm so glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you. Excellent job rebooting your swing at the turn, adding a pint of swing lubricant, and subsequently lighting up a difficult track on the back 9, particularly considering the rental tools and top-dressed greens!! 💪💪 Thanks so much for sharing your story. Tom, 13 days into your online school. Started at the beginning and have made considerable progess with my ball striking. Thank you for keeping it simple. I got a divot board and I'm getting a consistently very weird pattern. I have a photo. How can I send that to you? Anyway, I'll try to draw a picture here with the keyboard. => o The o is the ball. The > is the leading edge of the divot and the = is the divot. The leading edge actually has an angle to it, then straightens out. I know this is weird but hopefully you understand. I cannot figure this out. Can I send the photo on the website? Thanks for any help.
I'm very glad to learn of your ball striking improvement, Austin!! The best place for this type of swing-specific dialogue is in the Community section of the online school. Thanks and keep up the great work!! Tom

Tom how's it going? Keith from New Jersey your Led Zeppelin loving golf addicted buddy checking in! Was wondering if you could do us all a favor? In your videos you are always shown striping the ball with fantastic contact doing the swing that you promote. Could you make a video of your swing in super slow motion from face-on View and then rear view so we could emulate the proper movement and actions that we all wish we could duplicate? Obviously instructional commentary to go along with it would be a bonus but sometimes just the visual is enough. Us golfers and golfettes are anxiously awaiting! Whaddya' think?!

Yes - This swing key also applies to the driver. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some driving range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: th-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/w-d-xo.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. I am aware that many folks out there believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver. Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. I ran out and practiced this today and it was AWESOME!!!! Love the Divot Board but I’m concerned about the products longevity. $139 is up there and $50 replacement seems like it will be OFTEN… with regular practice. I need some encouragement here to pull the trigger. I’m new to golf bought your course, new golf clubs, bag, shoes, and a rukket net and turf mat to practice daily. I think this could help me but I can’t afford to risk throwing away any money. Thoughts?
I'm glad to know this lesson resonated with you, and I commend you on your commitment to learning and improving!! The Divot Board insert should last for between 1,000 - 3,000 adult strikes as per the manufacturer. I've made at least several hundred swipes on mine, but beyond some cosmetic stuff I've not noticed any real signs of wear as of yet. Kudos for embracing the challenge of this greatest of games, and have fun out there!! Tom
I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, Charlie! The key here is get to - but not go beyond - your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete, the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees, and the wrists are properly set (preferably with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist). This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur: 1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift 2) the wrists will break down 3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side 4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball 5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight. 6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact 7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury We don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting your body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If you execute this swing properly you will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that will enable you to harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". By the way, a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Hi Tom, love your teaching but can you please do something to help stop my wrist cupping. The pen/rule/tee under the wristwatch trick just doesn't do it for me and as soon as I actually keep my wrist flat on the backswing the club points out behind me and I end up doing a duck hook. Maybe my hips/back/skeleton etc are not flexible enough to support keeping my wrist flat and generate the power/speed my brain wants. It kinda hurts to come down into the ball with my trail elbow tucked into my side and my spine on the angle the pros all seem to achieve. There must be a solution!

I’m using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large, and I still feel the grip primarily in the fingers. I wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share some similar swing philosophies. These grips keep my hands much quieter - which I personally prefer. Also, since my fingers don't wrap all the way around and dig into my palms, I'm not triggering any forearm tension or activating arms muscles that may otherwise have a tendency to take control of the swing. The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf. @@SagutoGolf Thanks a lot for a very clear answer! :-) I have been a member and had a swing analysis as well. Just working on slowing down the tempo and pretilting the left shoulder. Since my shoulder surgery, I have been swinging with no tilt in my backswing. That leads to a lot of mishits. Cheers Staale
I would love a video on feeling stuck in the rotation. Whether it’s setup related/foot placement related etc. sometimes particularly with the driver I feel almost frozen when I try to rotate the shoulders with the lead arm straight.
It is essentially the same swing with every club, Nick; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some driving range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: th-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/w-d-xo.html The online school - which I referenced in my other reply to you - will assist you greatly in your efforts to resolve your issue. Tom, I’m keeping the weight forward as you suggest. I’m striking all my irons well. Divots aren’t deep at all and wish I could dig more into the turf. I play the cobra radspeed which is a game improvement iron. In your opinion, could I benefit from playing a thinner face iron with less bounce? Thanks!!!!
I'm glad to learn of your ball striking improvement, Buck. With regard to your equipment, my best suggestion would be to arrange a session with a professional fitter - preferably one who is not tied to a specific brand and who does not have an incentive to sell you something. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Greg! We're simply creating connections or pressure points that should be maintained throughout the motion. This does not require tension to be introduced. The "feel" at address is straight, soft arms; not stiff or tense arms. TS
Hi Mike, The Divot Board will work fine resting on top of the ground as its thickness will not make that much of a difference. Of course, if you really wish to be precise you could elevate your level to match it by standing on top of a mat or a rug remnant. TS
From their FAQ's: "Do you ship internationally? Yes we can ship anywhere in the world. We are based in the United States. @@SagutoGolf Super thanks , your video has really helped , especially straightening my left arm as I was always bending my left elbow and making poor contact, greetings to you from the emerald Isle 🍷🇮🇪🍻
Dear Tom. Great video indeed. I am following your swing. I am getting good result also. But sometimes i hit fat shot and sometimes i could not complete the swing. I am just stuck up after hitting the ball. Hope to get your quick response. Thanks.
I am very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you, Nasir, and I am pleased to learn of your improvement! With regard to your fat shots and getting stuck, consider the following possibilities: 1) Ball position is too far forward, 2) Hands are too far back at address (they should be in line with the inside of your lead thigh), 3) The swing center and low point are drifting backwards at some point during the motion (face-on video will help you determine this), 4) The downswing is steep and/or the path is out-to-in, 5) Early extension of the trail arm during the downswing (also known as "casting"), 6) Flipping/scooping through the zone, 7) Loss of relationship with the ball (shoulder angle flattening, loss of tilt). Though not an exhaustive list, those are the primary causes of fats, thins, and tops. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first two possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option for you would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Keep up the great work!! 💪💪 Tom
Hi Kimberly, At no time during my swing am I feeling that my weight is leaving my front side. However, the dynamics of the motion do create shifts in pressure, so it is perfectly acceptable to feel that building in the trail side during the backswing and then releasing forward in the downswing. The key here is that we never lose our swing center by swaying back off the ball. I hope that helps! @DAVID AMBRIDGE - The answer lies in ball flight laws. Clubface angle relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line, and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. From there we can then back into the cause of a particular shot shape and then reverse engineer it. By the way, there are entire sections of my online school dedicated to diagnosing and resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues. Have you looked into it? Obi-Wan Saguto you're my only hope. Been playing 15 years. I shot a 78 one day, then a 94 two days later. I can't play with any consistency. I never really thought to give S & T a try. But at this point I have nothing to lose. I'm going to commit to this for 1 full year. Where do I sign up?

It just looks that way. In the online golf school, the stances are actually narrower than I was thinking. I'm used to a wide stance and wondered why I chunked it so much. Watched the ball and foot position classes again and didn't duff once yesterday at league. I does feel super weird to be narrow so it's gonna take me awhile to get used to
The widest prescribed stance for this swing system is with the driver, where the inside heels of the feet are shoulder width apart. The stance gets incrementally narrower as the clubs get shorter, but never so narrow that we lose our balance or so as to hinder the swing motion. TS

Head in place, lead arm straight….. don’t tense up. The third piece is vital for me as if I tense up I can stay in place and still change the low point of the shot.
Indeed, Dean - The "feel" is straight arms; not stiff or tense arms. Tension is a swing wrecker!! Hi Richard, I'm glad you're enjoying my content! It is important to retain the angle in the trail arm well into the downswing in order to preserve our lag and a considerable amount of stored up power while avoiding a common swing-wrecking culprit known as "early extension". Yes, Michael - in this swing system the weight-forward component also applies to the driver. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: th-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/w-d-xo.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder/armpit), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice have caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver.
Hi Craig,
That certainly does not mean nothing!!

That's awesome, Mike!! 💪💪

I use my divot board often, it helps a ton. Tom can you do a video on uphill and downhill lies?

Thanks again, Russ - I'm glad you enjoyed spending your Sunday morning with me! 😎
Tom
Superb ⛳️👏
Thanks Peter!!
For a good starting point, here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/

Hey, you finally got new clubs Tom!
LOL! You've got a keen eye, Jeremiah!!
nice one Tom,
I only found your videos about 3wks ago.
I have been playing on, and mostly off, for about 15yrs (yes my oldest child is also now 15 🤔)
Having done nothing but the range for 3yrs, and even then it's only been 5 times over the last 2mths, my swing (and drive) had weakened considerably.
Front 9 was still having flashbacks of every instruction/tip/hack ever had and trying to constantly adjust myself, and shot 58 (pretty poor, but rentals, Callaway blades, and unforgiving driver which hadn't been offset, and a pro course that I didn't know)
Grabbed the wifi signal and a beer at the turn, and watched you again...........
Decided to block out all the crap from previous 'best ways to improve your game' and focus on your extremely simple crispy nuggets.
Back 9 shot 44.... the 7 went 170yds, 5 went 210 and the driver carried 260 over the water. (blades, rentals and no play for about 3yrs...........that would have been 88 if I had started as I finished, so was left delighted by the change, and it felt in. con. trol.)
Also didn't help that every green had just been done the evening before with sand (and I didn't adjust my strokes for that)
Anyway, after all of that..........THANK YOU from Scotland.
Thanks so much for sharing your story. Embrace the challenge and keep up the great work!!

Hi Keith,
No need to be "dazed and confused" about my swing! 😎 I slow down my swing in numerous videos. Or you can pause a video and press the period ( . ) button to advance frame by frame and the comma ( , ) to reverse frame by frame.

Great video! Can you practice this drill with the driver too?
Maybe with the ball more forward and focusing on hitting up a bit? I snap hook and drop kick my drives every now and then.
(Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws )
For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver.
The Divot Board insert should last for between 1,000 - 3,000 adult strikes as per the manufacturer. I've made at least several hundred swipes on mine, but beyond some cosmetic stuff I've not noticed any real signs of wear as of yet.

Thanks Tom
I'm 74 playing 30 years and still learning! I have trouble keeping my left arm straight. THANKS!

The key here is get to - but not go beyond - your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete, the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees, and the wrists are properly set (preferably with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist). This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur:
1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift
2) the wrists will break down
3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side
4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball
5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight.
6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact
7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury
We don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting your body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues.

Hi Dale,
This lesson from last week was on the exact topic of creating that flat wrist condition: th-cam.com/video/uBCy5JEhQIA/w-d-xo.html

Great stuff Tom I can see you have jumbo grips what size are you using and is your grip now in the palm or fingers thanks

Tom when trying to keep the elbows together doesn’t it make the arms rigid or bring tension into the swing? Thanks great lesson.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Greg!
We're simply creating connections or pressure points that should be maintained throughout the motion. This does not require tension to be introduced. The "feel" at address is straight, soft arms; not stiff or tense arms.
TS
Tom should the pivot board be flush to the ground height?
Hi Mike,
The Divot Board will work fine resting on top of the ground as its thickness will not make that much of a difference. Of course, if you really wish to be precise you could elevate your level to match it by standing on top of a mat or a rug remnant.

YES.
While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option for you would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

@@SagutoGolf Thanks a million Tom
On your downswing, do you shift your weight to the back foot and drive off of it, or is most of your weight still on the front foot?
Hi Kimberly,
At no time during my swing am I feeling that my weight is leaving my front side. However, the dynamics of the motion do create shifts in pressure, so it is perfectly acceptable to feel that building in the trail side during the backswing and then releasing forward in the downswing. The key here is that we never lose our swing center by swaying back off the ball.
I hope that helps!

Is the board working with the woods
It can work with hybrids and fairway woods since there is some turf interaction with those clubs.
Hey Tom. I cannot get the ball to draw! Dead straight or a push shot. Advice please?
You need to get the club moving more in to out.
That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish.
Welcome to "the dark side", Jeff, where the spoils of "conventional" instruction - chronic inconsistency, physical pain, and endless frustration - yield to the fruits of body-friendly enjoyment of this great game for a lifetime. 😆

I'm very glad to have you on board!!

May the course be with us both.
Tom, would you say that you have a wider than average iron stance?
It just looks that way. In the online golf school, the stances are actually narrower than I was thinking. I'm used to a wide stance and wondered why I chunked it so much. Watched the ball and foot position classes again and didn't duff once yesterday at league. I does feel super weird to be narrow so it's gonna take me awhile to get used to
The widest prescribed stance for this swing system is with the driver, where the inside heels of the feet are shoulder width apart. The stance gets incrementally narrower as the clubs get shorter, but never so narrow that we lose our balance or so as to hinder the swing motion.

@@SagutoGolf thank you
new sticks Tom ?!
You have a keen eye, Jim.....😎
Those are my new PXG's!
Tom, show us some hybrid videos. Thanka
It is essentially the same swing with every club, Daviid; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: th-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/w-d-xo.html
Here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some aspects of the system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ This will provide a nice foundational understanding of the swing keys that will ultimately get you mashing the ball through your entire bag.

Head in place, lead arm straight….. don’t tense up. The third piece is vital for me as if I tense up I can stay in place and still change the low point of the shot.
Indeed, Dean - The "feel" is straight arms; not stiff or tense arms. Tension is a swing wrecker!!

My carpet in the living room is the perfect board leaves perfect divots
I am not responsible for any carpet divots or chunks taken out of the subfloor beneath it!...... 😎
Would love to see a Tom WITB !
I had done one a few years ago, but I just recently switched out nearly my entire bag so it is no longer relevant (beyond the entertainment value, of course 😎). My bag is now stocked with the new PXG Driver, 3W, and irons (Gen 6). The only thing I kept was my Edel custom-fitted putter.

Hi tom can you do a Driver lesson anytime soon? Great channel thank you
Hi Armando,
It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods.
In previous video you want right arm/elbow against side- but I lose the 90deg elbow angle at top. OK?
Thank you for all these great videos.
Hi Richard,
I'm glad you're enjoying my content!
It is important to retain the angle in the trail arm well into the downswing in order to preserve our lag and a considerable amount of stored up power while avoiding a common swing-wrecking culprit known as "early extension". Here is a recent lesson on this: th-cam.com/video/RPBhaX_ILoE/w-d-xo.html

Are you supposed to have your weight forward, like this, with your driver as well?
Yes, Michael - in this swing system the weight-forward component also applies to the driver. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: th-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/w-d-xo.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content.
Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder/armpit), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact.
(Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws )
For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice have caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver.
