When I began shaving, the Mühle R89 was the go to razor for beginners here in Germany. It's available in many drugstores. Still one of my favourites, works great with Astra blades just like the Timor (another classic german CC razor). Greetings and have a great New Year! 👍

R89 and 34C are always suggested to newbies but my suggestion would be the Merkur progress or the Rockwell 6C.
Both with adjustable settings, easy to find angles and fairly compatible with most blades out there.

I have been wet shaving since few years now. I just use mild razors as I shave daily so don’t need so much of aggression. These 2 razors are the most I reach out on a daily basis.

Great video Dave! I also noticed the efficiency was a bit less, especially on the first pass. That razor really loaded up with mostly soap as it was only a two day growth. Agree 100% that this is a good entry level and looking forward to your comparison video.

My first razor and gave it away pretty quick. While it’s an easy comfortable shaver, it will never give a close shave. It’s a good beginner daily driver only, no matter what blade you drop in it

According to me, today, It STILL makes sense. It's a part of the traditional Shaving, and each beginner should ho trough a Muhle R89 or EJ de89 or a Merkur 34C with a Proraso cream and a Proraso brush. It's quite the initial ritual. Like the first beer, the first whiskey.....

Good honest review once again Dave. Happy new years to ya. I think you’re spot on with the description of the Muhle r89. It’s a fantastic classic well built razor for the beginner because it’s very forgiving. It also serves well people with thin light beards . For me using that razor or the Merkur 34c they are to mild for my coarse thick hairs which even with a feather blade I would have to work at my face more than I like to get the close shave I desire. With that said even tho use a mild razor such as these mentioned or even a Henson u still have to keep in mind no matter what brand or model u use your still dragging a razor blade across your skin. So the less contact u can make to get your desired shave the far less chances of irritation u will have . But it all depends on each persons wants out of a shave and their skin and hair types. As I’ve said in past comments I prefer more efficient razors with sharp blades. Recently I’ve been diving into the injector razor market . Just got a Supply SE and a Bullgoose asylum v3 razor. Now their blades are thicker and much more rigid than de blades and so far especially the Asylum ooh brother what a shave. Totally different feel and use . They glide like butter through the hair. Can’t even feel it cutting. But this is the beautiful world of wet shaving. So many options with razors, blades, and soaps etc that the sky is the limit. And chances are there’s gonna be more than one combo that works right for every individual.

I think it's an excellent mild razor, for beginners and veterans alike. I've been wet shaving for years and still reach out for it. In my opinion it actually is slightly better than the Merkur 34c. It shaves just as efficiently but I find it a bit more comfortable and since it's a 3 piece, it allows for you to try the head with other handles (if you prefer a heavier razor, you can easily use it with a razorock or maggard SS handle). 3 piece designs also allow to replace just the head or just the handle should you damage one. I also think Muhle and Edwin Jagger razors chrome plating finish is usually higher quality than Merkurs (less imperfections in the plating in my experience). I still think the Merkurs are excellent razors btw.

I don't have a Merkur 34C, but I have a 20C and a 40C which use the same head. I'm just not a fan of the two piece because it's not as repairable and you're stuck with one handle. It's my understanding that the head geometry is the same for the Merkur two and three piece razors.
I also have a Muhle Hexagon, which uses the same head as the R89.
I haven't used the AccuForge but I have and love the Personna Comfort Coated blades (hundreds of them). It works great in both the Merkur and the Muhle.
I'd give the Muhle a very slight edge in Aggression but it's not so different that I'd recommend one over the other.
The Muhle has a bit less end tab exposure than the Merkur head does.
The big difference for me is that the Merkur's head is a big more radiused all over the baseplate resulting in the Muhle having noticeably "pointy" corners. This initially bothered me until I realized that I couldn't feel the corners of the baseplate when I had the angle right, so I now view it as a feature rather than a bug. I think this makes it an excellent razor to learn with, especially now that Merkurs cost more. The fit and finish is also better on the Muhle heads. I just wish their handles had better knurling for beginners.
As for the reason why the 34C has so many sales, it's been around since 1934, practically unchanged aside from plating (they used to be plated with silver. More people own them and recommend them as a first razor. The Muhle is much newer, less than 20 years.

The only time i have ever NOT nicked my adams apple when shaving is when i used the manscaped plow 2.0 with a personna chrome platinum blade. Is there a technique or method one can use to avoid nicking the adams apple, or is it a question of i havent found the right blade for that razor?

Some things really aren't that easy to improve.
As we were discussing before, I do have experience with the straight razor and actually find the open comb more comfortable.
Quite a few guys insist this is "wrong" but the open comb is only aggressive because that is what is expected when the customers are shopping. If you are new to wet shaving you may want to give this a try. Try taking the blade out of your razor and use it to move the shaving cream around. Use no more pressure than you need to push the shaving cream. Then put the blade in and try it again, with no more pressure only concern your self with the angle that the razor is being held in your wrist. This is the magic adjustment! (I have some rather thick, wiry hair, so, mild isn't quite the point. I have to beat the bushes down with some authority behind it.)
OK, Oho shaves, something that won't waste your time. A popular subject.: When I get to the area around my throat, where the hair direction changes, I do have problems where the hair lays down flat. This are should be a serious subject for ingrown hairs and acne. As such, I usually just leave the area alone, or skip shaving for a day.
I'm still working on the theory that platinum isn't a good material to have in a razor blade. The Derby Premium has tungsten, which is worst. It is going well. It isn't some bazaar theory, it current medical science, gold and platinum are about the worst materials you cold expect your body to react to. Titanium or Teflon should be excellent. I think the only reason why chrome is so good is that it is too strong a material to come off during a shave. So, right now, it is "throw the blade out at shave number three because the plating has taken a beating" and that is going very well.
Do you think that "riding the cap" with an open comb will help lift the hairs to prevent them from becoming ingrown? Obviously, I have enough scars from shaving mistakes in that area. The open comb should help feed the hairs that are lying flat against the skin or is it the blade gap?
    (Trig hasn't been reviewed.)
(Looking at the RazoRock SLOK) I know you read your comments, but your customers do too. Happy New Year.

    • @OhioShaves
      @OhioShaves  วันที่ผ่านมา

I'm not sure an open comb Razor would be better? I would think preshave oil might work best. But again, I don't really know your situation reading something and actually seeing it is two different things. But if you have scars from Razors on your neck where your hair grows flat. A open come, Razor might Lance one of those off leading you into a nightmare shave

      @@OhioShaves "An open comb razor"
That's Ok, Ohio, don't be too concerned. I was just our razor shopping and noticed that you have your page set for nickel slots.
I know you always answer your comments and thought it was a popular subject. To rebrief, I learned how to wet shave with a blade that was way too sharp and had considerable problems with the results. As usual, nobody taught me the answer so it was a tough row to hoe. That was close to fifty years ago and I still have a strip along my throat where the hairs lay down flat.
So, what I do with that area is set the adjustable razor(Futur) for a fairly aggressive tooth. (The Futur is a God awful heavy and aggressive razor in the first place.) Once that I have remembered to address the area differently, I "ride the cap" against the grain. With the Future set on a number four, the blade slides under that whole line of brush in one nice neat swipe.
Now, the open comb is abut the same as the Futur is on a three. Conversely, the Futur on a one is like a plastic disposable. with the open comb all of that chopped up debris is pushed over the blade in a nice neat bunch. Of course, back when I was fifteen the only answer was to grow a beard.
OK, So rather than waste your time, if the razor is "more aggressive" then with a slightly duller blade you can get more blade feel and adjust your angle much more quickly....I think? Or is "aggressive" a different quality?
(because a shaving scar that old isn't really the subject for most of your viewers.)
Hope you enjoyed the read. And yes, that is a bloody dangerous mess.

Coming from Germany I have the R89 Grande and 38c (34 head with barber pole handle). For me, together with a few Gilette razors, they are timeless classics that belong in every household (if the money allows). However, it would be desirable if both Mühle and Merkur were to become a little more ‘innovative’ and not rest too much on their old products. In 2025, there is a strong competition with excellent products, such as Razorock.

      They're better than my opinion.

It's a personal preference. I really love my synthetic brushes. No soaking required, easy to cleanup, soft.

I like mild razors, but this one was too mild even for me.

I love shaving with a DE, it feels like an event that I enjoy compared with using cartridges. If only they could give me a closer shave on my head, I would throw my Gillette cartridges away

Practice. I know I get a closer shave than any of my Gillette cartridges.

I don't think this razor necessarily seems terrible, but it seems very out of date and inferior, and there's just better options available. (Yes, I mean better DE razors avaialble)

I wound up with 5-6 of these things. Also DE89 couple of those and a Rocca. I like the Rocca ok. I've got countless knock offs.

Sensitive skins need one pass! Only one pass! And this razor, can't shave you with just one pass. The best for me, is the Razorock .68.
