My first DE Razor was the 34C, you can't go wrong with that razor. I made the switch from cartridge to DE several years ago, and I am so glad I did! No mor ingrown hairs, no irritation, and now I only shave every 2 or 3 days. Thanks for the info video, Matt, keep them coming!
Just used my first DE razor today, got a little close in some areas, I felt like I came back from one of those Solon's that do a face peel. 😂 But seriously. What kind of shaving cream do you use? And how long do your blades last until you can tell it's time to change? ...and how can you tell? Also, any advice you quickly found out as a first time user? ...like something you used to do with a disposable but realized it's different on a DE razor, and realized you had to change. Something like that.
I use these products on a regular basis and I ain't no beginner...they're just great products for anybody at any stage of shaving. They are however great for a beginner and this is a nice tutorial for the newbies. Well done Matt, lots of folks will appreciate this video.
Nice tutorial, thanks. I've just made the switch, and it's kinda tricky since I don't shave much of my face, but I do the whole head. First shave was slightly scary, but by the end it went just as fast as a cartridge shave, and I didn't feel sore at all. Also, no cuts. 20 years of shaving, I had no idea. Now I don't need 2 days of skin recovery anymore.
Thank you Matt. Always a pleasure listening to you. Self-care is everything. I've been away for a while from shaving videos due to a worsening of complex ptsd and severe depression. I do not know why I am telling you this... Anyway, you are a good man. My cat is always helping me out. Be blessed Matt 🙏
My first razor over three years ago was the Murker 38c, the long handle 34c. I also started out with Proraso products. I’m a big fan of the red, Sandlewood scent. My fancy razor now is my Rex Supply Envoy with the long handle.
Thanks Matt! Super awesome! I love DE razor shaving. I will never go back to cartridge-it is the best decision I’ve made when it comes to men’s grooming.
I been using Proraso about 8 years, always an excellent shave but I mix it in a bowl. I have 10 razors and the Mercur 34 is my go to when I need to make sure ,no nicks. The only negative for me is it’s a smaller length razor and I have big hands
Ive wanted to switch for a long time from cartridge. Matt ive checked out a lot of videos online and i just ordered everything in this video. Just got my confirmation from Razor emporium!!
I've been wet shaving for quite some time now so I don't necessarily need a tutorial. But because I enjoy your outlook, attitude, and just the way you bring joy to the camera that reaches all of us, yep! You guessed it. I watched this video till the end. Take care brother
Great job Matt! I started on this path about two months ago with the 34 as well. I have learned so much from your channel and website. Keep up the good work.
Awesome!! Video. I switched over around 2011. Started using brush soap (Willams) way earlier because of the cost and hassle of traveling with cans. I’ll never go back to cartridge blades.
Im a fragrance head I like, buying the gift sets for the aftershave because they smell of the colognes/then i was just looking at the aftershaves that lead to the db shaving rabbit hole,i been binge watching your videos i might have to switch up to db get out of the disposables cartridges ,try a different experience..
Whip it!...Whip it ready good....haha! I was waiting for the flower pot hat to fall on your head when you inadvertently hit upon some of the phrases to the song whip It!, by Devo.
I have been using Fatip TG for a while now. I tried the Mercur 34c yesterday with Feather blade, it was way too mild. I guess I have become an advanced shaver now.
Favorite pre-shave: Cremco facial scrub. It has great oils and slight grit to exfoliate. Extremely slick. Favorite blade: Feather! I used whatever came with my first DE bundle I got at Bed Bath And Beyond and Google’d DE razors for the sharpest. Feather was recommended over and over, and I’ve not looked back. I bought a sleeve of a hundred from Amazon. Then I got talked into buying a bundle of various blades which most were trash, a few made it to two shaves. In an absolute pinch, I’d buy a minimal amount of Wilkerson Sword, Kia, or Voshkod. Favorite razor: Pemco two piece slant, a copy of the Merkuer slant, that I was given as a Christmas present from my mother-in-law as it was my father-in-law’s before he passed. This is the only thing that makes the otherwise useless blades from the bundle at least usable. My wife bought me a Viking Emperor Augustus for my birthday a few years ago as I wanted to try an adjustable. I tried the first pass on 5, second on 3, third on 1 thing a few times as George had done a in a few videos with a different razor. I ended up putting it on 3 for a year, now down to 2 and I don’t adjust it. I cannot bring myself to spend $100.00 to $500.00+ on a razor I see in videos, so I’ll never own a Rex or whatever the current laser forged titanium is in the cool boys videos. My $20.00 hand-me-down is nearly 60 years old, and my $50.00 adjustable are fine. BBS Shave: this was literally drilled into my head at boot camp and I like it. It gives me the best look and feel with my coarse black whiskers that could be used for sandpaper after a day of not shaving; hence, another reason I like Feather blades. They cut, and last around four shaves. But my trick is, two passes with a DE, and a final light pass with a cheap disposable that I use one per six months or more as it isn’t doing any heavy shaving. I equate things to my DE is like 60 grit sandpaper or whetstone, and the cheapo is 1,000 grit or a leather strop.
Love this channel it’s what got me to try de shaving, still not fully used to getting the angle and pressure right so I still get a few Knicks and cuts especially under my chin and neck. But I’ll keep practicing and I love the poraso eucalyptus and mint it’s the stuff I’ll use forever
Just shared your video with a new wet shave posting on Redit who was turned off be a lot of experienced shavers coming off as elitists. K.I.S.S. for the win.
Great video, one question, I have a really sharp jaw and chin (not meant as a flex) and always get a bunch of irritation there. Do you have any ideas or tips for that?
Matt, great video😊 You are keeping it simple and putting any hesitations a person might have to wet shaving at ease. I like when you were demonsrating how to face lather with the brush and you said, "Now whip it into shape..." Did you flashback in your head to Devo's song Whip It?😂 You should have that as background music when you are lathering up 😂
I think it's also important to note that while Proraso and Merkur stuff is classic beginner stuff, it's still stuff that seasoned wet shavers will still use. I've been wet shaving for years and I'm nuts in that I've bought a lot of product from many different companies because I want to try them to see if it's better. However, I still go back to Proraso products. It's just good, cheap stuff. I should have saved all that money and just kept with the Proraso stuff. It's just good stuff.

Great video Matt. That's how it's done. I bought a 34C a while back because everybody swears by them. I've not had a good shave with it yet. After several passes, I still feel like I need to shave. I still have stubble, and my face has had all it wants. I've tried Feather blades, and everything in between. Did I get a bad one? Have you heard of other people having this problem? I shouldn't have to shim it should I? Not a 34C. I have way too many razors (a horrible case of R.A.D.) and none of the others are like this. New or old.
@@bigdchidepends, I have fair skin, blondish hair and fine hair. The 34c to me with a parker blade or Rockwell does the job. Any sharper I'll get a rash on the second pass

Eventually I transitioned, to those electric shavers, but the experience itself was also a hit and miss, but since it beat previous experience I stuck with it for years. Only a few months ago I had a recommendation from a co worker to try out using a straight razor as the experience was just different and decided to try it. Went with Parker 96R (since I already started with Parker) and honestly I regretted that I haven't found out about DE razors and this whole thing 10 years ago when I moved out of my parents house. Matt, my razor emporium order came in today and I just did my first shave. My skin is a little irritated, I thought I followed this exactly. Thoughts? Did I push too hard? Should I try the white line instead of the green? Appreciate you buddy!
Guy: "You're thinking to yourself - 'this doesn't make any difference!' Yes, it does." Guy, 10 seconds later: "It's been a long time since I've used this, so let's give it a shot" 😂
I had to start shaving again after nearly 20 years of beard growth. I have extremely sensitive skin, so much so that when I was briefly in the US Army I was the only white guy to be exempt from daily shaving. My oldest has been using a DE razor for about a year now, and convinced me to go that route. I went full wet shaving though, he didn’t change anything else other than the razor. For as long as I have to shave I will never go back to cartridges. While I still get some irritation it’s no where near as bad as it is with cartridges & disposables.
Also it’s kind of funny at 46 years old I remember seeing DE “Safety” Razors in old movies and maybe even old TV shows, but I don’t remember knowing anyone not even my born in 1912 grandfather using one.
I'm not a beginner so I wont be watching this vid all the way but I just wanted to stop by and thank you for making these beginner guides for getting people away from terrible cartridge razors.

My new Gillette King C comes in the mail tomorrow! Pretty sure I'll actually like shaving with that over a cartridge and I don't shave much because of those. I realize now 3 or 5 blade cartridge are pure gimmick and garbage compared to a single blade safety razor.
I have the Parker 99R and a Mach 3. I rarely use either since I have a beard but I decided to just have a goatee for the rest of the summer so I shaved with both, using Proraso for sensitive skin and to be honest with you, the Mach 3 game a more comfortable shave. Super smooth and didn’t cut my face. The Parker was also pretty smooth but a tad too rough and cut my skin twice. Also, it is more time consuming. Wet shaving isn’t for everyone and nobody should feel bad for shaving with a cartridge razor.
You forgot to tell people, though it is apparent if watching the video, you don't need to tighten down the razor really hard. No need to horse it down, light touch is all that is needed.
The Only caveat to de shaving is the prep time before the shave which sometimes it is annoying when you are in a hurry and not in the mood to stand doing the prep for at least 15 min. Recommend any beginners to start with Persona Red razor since they are very sharp but not aggressively like Feather, Gilette Platinum, Astra Green or Perma Sharp. If you like it without any irritation then keep using it because if you try to go sharper then there will be a lot of irritation. If you want sharper then you can go up to Feather level. If you feel that Persona red is too sharp then go down to Derby Extra because they are very mild and you can feel the weakness when shaving with Derby’s. Good shaving everyone! PS use potassium alum block afterwards for me beats any aftershave and also stop the bleeding and naturally deodorized, especially the armpit and down under shaving.
Keep in mind that most men, the vast majority of men don’t shave as a “hobby “. Shaving enthusiasts aka “wet shavers” will always say it’s cheaper & superior to carts & disposables. However most of these guys have dozens of safety razors, brushes, soaps accessories. At the end of the day they end up spending triple 😂

WALLAH!
Great point!
