Cheap 150 dollar Camcorder goes Underwater, Motion Activated Security cam

- Camcorders are fun. As a camcorder, the 4K Minolta MN4K300WP is not only cheap at just over 100 dollars, but it can go underwater and can also be motion activated to start recording when it senses movement, so it could be used as a security camera. The WP in the name stands for waterproof. Colors are great outdoors and it does well in bright light, but not so well indoors. It's surprisingly sharp outdoors and has beautiful colors. The zoom sucks and it doesnt like artificial light, like LED lights. But for 150 dollars, this is one of the best camcorders you can get for the price, next to the Sony CX405. In this video, sample video footage is compared between the Minolta MN4K300WP, the Sony CX-405 and the Panasonic VX981 4K camcorder. if you love vlogging or cameras or camcorders or video and photography gear, enjoy this video!

I love the pure comparison footage, Nothing complicated. just side by side . Very useful, Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Chinese bought the rights to the Minolta name from the Japanese a long time ago and now cheap junk is sold under the Minolta name.
I believe Konica Minolta discontinued making cameras in the early aughts and sold the rest of their SLR camera business to Sony. In 2017, Elite Brands Inc. bought the name “Minolta” and started basically slapping the Minolta branding on cheap Chinese made cameras. Konica Minolta on the other hand still makes large copying machines/printers and digital press ranges.
It does have some cheap drawbacks but an underwater cam for 150 bucks is an incredible deal.
Does it shoot 24fps? That could make it a great "stunt cam" for low budget movies.
This brings back memories, the Minolta shown in the commercial I gave to my brother for his birthday years ago
Hi markus! I just discovered your channel and I've been on a binge for the last few days. Your videos are so good! Tons of great actionable information. No commercials disguised as reviews. No padded run time to stuff in more ads. It's so nice to see someone respect their audience. Thought I'd comment on your latest video to help give it a bump with the algorithm. Thanks so much. Your videos have been really valuable to me!
❤
I bought a cheap camcorder at Walmart and kept it until the following day. Will I ever learn my lesson?
Buy nice or buy twice. 😊
Thank you for all your videos and give a hug to Cara. A model with her patience and enthusiasm is a once in a lifetime gem.
I guess that movement activation would be useful in some niche scenarios where you want to get video of wildlife. Zoom into a bird nest and such. It's also protected from the weather. And if it gets stolen you don't lose a fortune.
Minolta also made some pretty funky point n' shoot cameras in the 2000's, such as the DiMAGE F-series (like the F100 as I have one myself) which were some of the first to feature tracking AF, the X-series square box shape point n' shoots, A-series SLR-style bridge cameras, and they also made the DiMAGE V in the late 90's, which you can separate the lens from the camera body, and attach it with a cable. They made some wicked stuff!
Thanks for the video Marcus. Awesome as always. I'll be sending it back.
Man, that was a SCARY burglar!
I make a good burglar 😅
I have 2 old mintola AF lenses from the 90s and a minolta 3xi which I've never used. I eneded up getting a adapter for my a6000 and they take the best photos I have taken!
OH WOW ... When I saw to Ducks/Geese in the pool at 6:23 ... I instantly became a MarkusPix Fan! Period, end of story ... I LOVE WILDLIFE and spent many hours documenting them. ... yes I do ... I froze the screen on that scene ... sorry to rant, but I so much enjoy seeing this !!! I will get back to the video in a minute ... just loving that duck footage.
😂 you're really into ducks. We all can learn something with this channel !
I counted 15 catchlights in those pearly blues on your indoor set. You're wild.
If it had some stabilization and a smooth zoom, it would have been a steal.
Thank you for posting real practical info! ❤
Minolta was great back in the day. I still use their lenses that are over 50 years old.
It's really a good deal, especially considering it can go underwater. It can also be used for loop recording and used as a webcam and to take interval photo. That might make it a security camera that is actually useful unlike those ring things and everything else I have tried. And it looks like it may be good enough and record long enough for talking head videos that look decent.
Well, if you're on a small budget, this may be the starting point for some. Nice review, honest.
Well now i feel like i really know you after those close ups! Ha ha that was intimate!
Love seeing you just get goofy and not care and still deliver helpful info.
Very cool. Looks great outside in the sunshine. I always loved The old JVC, Sony Cams. Thanks for the review of the 4K Minolta MN4K300WP.
My first 35mm was a Minolta 103, with stock lens, a 300 zoom, and what I think was called a telex converter. It doubled whatever len I used.
It certainly exceeded my expectations in ideal conditions, minus the zoom. Great comparisons!!
Finally we've been able to comment. Thanks to you teacher. I love your contents. Keep up the good work
since 2003 all Minolta production has been transferred to China. So that is also a Chinese camcorder.
This product has nothing to do with minolta. The brand name was acquired and is now being used to sell sub par products.
VW builds cars in Mexico. So VW is a Mexican car, lol
@@Arcticfox7 YES.
@@Arcticfox7 YES. factory workers management materials all Mexican. Yes German project but don't tell me it's a German car. then you are free to think as you like
Would have been more useful to see the underwater capability in action rather than the comparison to 2 cameras we know you like. The Minolta’s party trick is that it can get wet, if it can do that well, it’s worth the money.
As others have mentioned,,,Sony bought out all Minolta imaging properties around 2008..which were already owned by Konica...whew. I was selling cameras all throughout all the late 70s to mid 90s.. Although they didn't have the Canon, Nikon name recognition,, they were actually a near premium brand and were the first to come out with several bits of tech like practical autofocus,, wireless TTL flash, 1/8000th sec mechanical shutter speed and flash sync at that speed too. They had great several great lenses too,,I still have a 100 2.8 macro I use with a mirrorless Lumix. These guys are just renting the name (not even the logo),,just like the companies that use Bell and Howell to market cheap gadgets.. Still.. I was surprised that this camera did so well.. Great test!!
Stabilization and zoom aside, I found the image quality pretty similar to the Sony, but the Panasonic was really in whole different league
TY.
My first camera was a minolta in 83-84. I loved it. Now I have an older micro 4/3 lumix . I thought Sony bought minolta could be wrong, though. It may be a good snorkeling video camera. It could be fun just to watch people freak out when you go underwater with it. I use the lumix dmc- ts30 for underwater shots. Paid 20 dollars for it. Brand new. She got it as a gift, didn't want it.
Good choices all around-- I have a similar journey as well--
Really awesome comparison! I got the 405 and really like it, but I'm really looking forward to getting a Panasonic!
VX981 sure does a great job ! I fell off my chair about the zoomy LOLOL...omg...now that's funny
I'd get the Minolta just to throw in the bag going to the river; spilling things won't hurt it and if you've had an underwater camera (had a little pocket one that was super great for underwater shots like 20 years ago, wish I could remember who made it) the novelty never really wears off, for me at least. The kids have a hoot with it too!
love to get one of this....
Works great outdoors, which is where I would want to use a waterproof camera! I would consider this for $150. It would be ever better if Markus give it to me!
Thanks for doing a video on this I saw these and always wondered but looks pretty good for $150, Just picked up a 1971 Minolta SRT 101 and shooting my first roll of film in 24 years the 1971 probably weighs 10 Minolta camcorders, but I love it
When I was in high school in the 70s --and selling photo gear until in the 90s ,,EVERY school had SRT-101s,, Super durable and half the price of Canon and Nikon,, and many more features than Pentax
Hi Markus, thanks for excellent videos. I noticed jittery effect while you moved your body in the frame. Can you please make a video to explain how to avoid this jitter while filming videos. I also had sony ax53 which can shoot 4 k , but this jitter is quite often obvious in the videos.
Waterproof or rugged camcorders would be fun with modern specs. I always look at a Sony GW77 and wonder just how good it could be if a newer model came out.
Never would I believe it was a $150 camera, if you wouldn't tell 😮😮😮 watching on a big TV, it's absurdly good for the price 😮
Does it have a mic jack? XD Thank you Markus! Great video!
But if you just needed a 4K video camera that was water sealed, this would be a possibility. For that price, if it got goobered up in the weather then you really couldn't cry too much...
Thanks for sharing.
I wished to have seen you underwater in your pool with it 😢
Love all your videos Markus, you are so down to earth. What do you think about the DJI Osmo Pocket 3?
th-cam.com/video/1K7PkXS52PQ/w-d-xo.html
I bet Markus loves it
My old Sanyo has image stabilization but you have to hold the camera so steady just to notice it. It uses software for the image stabilization.
Literally just bought a Canon HF10 and I could not by happier
I like the VX
Love the vids man :D, youtube algorhythm lezzz goooo!!!
Cool video - Does it have a mic jack? lol
This might be good for a project I am currently working on -- underwater video in a local creek. Not deep, but obviously a waterproof camera is a must. However, the stabilization quality is poor, and that could be a deal killer, requiring stabilization during the edit.
Have you reviewed the Sony cx240?
Could you do summer camcorders
for beaches and outdoors activities
Waterproof
Wasn't minolta acquired by sony...
Also the sound is from sony cybershot
Correct. Sony acquired Konica-Minolta’s digital camera division, which is why Sony’s first digital SLR cameras used the Minolta A mount lens standard. That said, Konica-Minolta still had the rights to the Minolta name, which they apparently sold to another company.
“It’s got like a high quality box here…” 😂
Packaging is everything 😜
Minolta became the core of the Sony camera division.
henceforth alpha exists
Sony bought Minolta's SLR camera tech. The "Minolta" name, now detached from its former camera tech, is currently licenced in the US to Elite Brands who get to slap the "Minolta" brand on any non-SLR camera they like.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It's from another company that bought the rights to use the name Minolta.
The real Minolta still makes lens and last time I checked they was making the lens for the JVC pro camcorders.
Rumor is Minolta made the glass for Panasonic 35-100mm f2.8 Micro Four Thirds lens.
The Minolta SLR camera was bought by Sony and became their base for further development....
Hey Markus, do you have unneeded hard drive or SSD because I really need one to back up imoortant things so I can move on to create stuffs to help me get back on track in life as soon as possible, is thee something I can do for you to get one if you dont have any unwanted unit?
You definitely get what you pay for. That Panasonic is killer. But at 3x the price, you'd hope so. The Minolta, while an inferior picture is waterproof and motion sensor activated. Nifty allrounder camera.
Man. I miss my Vivitar.
I am pretty sure it is USBC not micro usb -I will never buy a micro usb device again
Would have been nice if he tried to change settings for stabilization - maybe the default is off or low setting
Underwater Video is essential for an underwater camcorder
I love the side by side comparisons - very well done !

Wow I love your channel , I'm looking into a Canon VIXIA HF G70 to do my video's what do you think about it ? I don't have a big budget and I'm a Canon fan. Thank you for your input.

@@MarkusPix Thank you very much , and Ken will do all the setting you suggested we are just starting up now with making Better Video's and your channel is really helping us, Thank you. Ute & Ken " LOVE & LIGHT" to you and your family.
Great video as usual, but the problem is that every time that Markus demonstrates a camera it is sold out on AMAZON before I can purchase it. Thanks for saying at the end that there is no mic jack. Still, a good camera for everyday use (no problem if lost or stolen) and the motion sensor function is interesting.
You seriously thought a 150 dollar camera would have a mic jack?
What? I leaned analog photography on a Minolta x-700. Didn’t know they still existed
good tests. that Minolta camcorder could work for some projects. prob better than video from a phone cam.
let me know if you've done videos where you compare camcorders with phone cam video.
How is the video quality underwater?
Still have my old Minolta 5000 and 7000 dynax with the program card slot lol 😂
I have a cheap QVC special MN260NV ( night vision) camcorder that works surprisingly well, comes with only USB to PC cable, no HDMI to TV. Also have "Minolta" MN50HD, not good. These Minolta cheapies are Chinese made, and sold through Elite Brands in New York.
Minolta is owned by another company they're no longer the company they used to be so I've heard that some of their stuff is hit or miss at any price range so if you're going to get a Minolta camera whether it's a camcorder or any other type of camera I would do your research and see who actually makes that minalta camcorder or camera but even with that said I think for the price those are really good cameras and camcorders I was thinking about getting one of their camcorders just to see how well it does versus my cheap action cameras
"No it doesn't have a mic-jack!"🤣
But what does the underwater footage look like?
Not bad really. Till ya start moving
Is. It just me or is 1080p just absolutely fine ?
Depends on the camera. Most Canon cameras suck in 1080 so you have to use 4K, whereas the Sony RX100vii is so good in 1080 there is no need for 4K th-cam.com/video/-MXTlbaG0BY/w-d-xo.html
It is quite surprising to see a Konica-Minolta product since Sony bought it in 2006, and they chose the "α" brand name (already in use by Minolta in Asia) for their new Sony α. BTW, the A-mount comes from Minolta.
As mentined the Minolta brand was sold and has no connection to the old company.
What do you think of the Sony GW77 ? There’s also a GW66 and GWP88
Anything by Sony is cool.
Minolta going the way of Miranda.
Minolta was far better than brands you mention and produced absolute top cameras in late 80 up to end of 90ties. As a camera fanatic do yourself a favor and find Maxxum/Minolta Dynax 9XI with XI lens and review it for yourself. Still the fastest open market analogue camera ever made with 12000/ sec exposure time. At that time (1992 or 3) i could choose Nikon D90 (moronic three switches to go from full auto to full manual), Canon Eos5 (cheap plastic bajonets and useless eye focus) both with ground braking functions but i chose 9XI for its very progressive thinking and functions and i never regret it. All operations controllable without taking it off your eye. It was so advanced that traditional photographers were baffled with it and that was its downfall. It is still the best and most progressive analogue camera ever made. Check yourself!
Great video but I expected more video clips with underwater footage compared with gopros
Hello Markus! I cant find a proper and honest opinion about the Marantz PMD-706 recorder. I can bet 1000 USD that you will have experience with this one. My question is how it can be compared to some recent ZOOM recorders that don't have 32-bit float. Is there a difference in sound quality, and is there a clever power solution for this Marantz? Thanks!
It looks like a repackaged Tascam DR-70D, of which I am not a fan. I never had any luck with Marantz recorders. Nowadays, even a tiny Tascam DR10L pro can record much better audio.
@@MarkusPix Thanks! Highly appreciate it!
Hey Markus I’m not sure if you’re snipped but if you are there’s something called foreskin restoration. It doesn’t regrow the mucosal tissue but it makes it functional and regrows the 15 square inches of missing skin using stretching devices to trigger mitosis
Interesting comment on a photography channel and not necessary in my case anyway 😜
Hi Markus, do you think this light is good?
Ulanzi LM07 Videography Rechargeable Flashlight L031GBB1
As a flashlight yesm but too weak to really be of much use in video
I thought Sony bought Minolta and they weren't a thing anymore?😮
I guess a Chinese company bought the name perhaps 🤔
I assumed Minolta were a Japanese company, I seem to remember they bought out Konica?
Nice camcorder though, good price 👌
I thought Sony purchased Minolta and now I find there is many budget priced Minolta bridge and compact cameras at B&H and Adorama.
Konica-Minolta was purchased by Sony a long time ago. The "Minolta" name was recently purchased by a Chinese company call "Elite Brands." They have started slapping the name on heaps of generic cameras and camcorders of varying quality and selling them all over the place. Many of them are absolutely identical to the no-name or oddly named, generic camcorders that are all over Amazon, etc. That's why it feels similar and has a similar start-up noise to the other generic cameras Markus has there. It's almost certainly made by the same company, but has had the Minolta name put on it.
Interesting that you mentioned it has the same startup sound as the other cheap Chinese camcorders. I suspect that the only thing Minolta about this camera is the name. Minolta, sadly, got out of the camera business several years ago, which gave Sony its intro into the DSLR market, which it took off with to lead the mirrorless market. Seems that some no name manufacturer is licensing the Minolta name now, but they can't license quality.
Yeah, a Chinese company called "Elite Brands" licensed the Minolta name and is putting it on seemingly every generic camera and camcorder imaginable. Almost overnight, "Minolta" seems to have about two dozen different "models."
Not so shabby for Minolta camcorder. My parent brought 35mm film camera from Minolta back in 90's which is good cameras I played around back in high school these days. It was 3rd upgrade cameras but before it was Kodak Disc film unfortunately Kodak got sued from trademark patent in the later 80's and no longer made. It goes back in the rolls of film. In my childhood, first glance of my parent's cameras was Polaroid and Kodak instamatic cameras look like same made as Polaroid did. Don't shake the Polaroid as you pulled out of the cameras. 📸
Given Minolta was bought by Konica in 2003 and then Konica Minolta was bought by Sony back in 2006, and is where Sony got a lot of their modern DSLR/Mirrorless camera tech, including AF, I find it ironic that a camera branded as Minolta, but is likely just a cheep Chinese counterfeit is being compared to a Sony which is actually the real Minolta rebranded.
4:48 😁
I wonder if Minolta team will watch this video. Lol.
It would be tough to watch while spinning in their graves,,,,
that camera looks like cheap fun
The Panasonic is much much better and worth 3x more.😊 However they are about £350 in the UK with 20% tax included. So only about twice the price of the Minolta.
They bought the name, nothing to do with the real Minolta, been using a JVC one ok down to 15ft, it is only HD but does have optical zoom , is great for filming in the rain, I have used it in heavy rain on several out door films.
Sony bought minolta license and finally sony have an a series
Hardcoded datestamp? Oldschool.
There's probably an option to turn it off, but I don't read manuals 😄
It's ok in good light but light conditions underwater are usually bad.
I think it's just a cell phone camera put into a camera housing...
$150 seems expensive but its watersealed, if only other camcorder is watertight.
Liking the 405 but could it really put out useable video?
Depends what the use is. th-cam.com/video/KmZH3rGjjlQ/w-d-xo.html
@@MarkusPix true enough. I shot my last vid on an old Kodak 1080 camera and it has a nice patina.
Get GoPro Hero 6 or something for 150 and throw that underwater :) I think even that is better investment.
Someone may have pointed this out already, but it isn't Minolta. It's some generic company renting their name - that's why they seem very much like the generic cameras.
Honestly jusy buy a cx405.
@@BeyondBaito Agree.
