  • I made a camera gear video several years ago about traveling light as a photographer in Europe, but my suitcase was jammed full of so much gear, it made people's minds spin. It was overflowing with cameras, micro four thirds, APSC, lenses, outdoor flash strobes like Godox AD200, speedlight like TT600, LED video lights,tripods, filters, audio gear, recorders, wireless audio systems, all kinds of lavalier microphones, three different kinds of flash triggers, even three different kinds of camera bags. But why? WHY? There was actually a purpose. Finally, after all these years, I explain the method to the madness. I actually WAS traveling light when I left the hotel. Aw heck, just let me explain.

    I truly value your advice. As an event photographer, it's essential for me to have backup equipment, and your tips have been incredibly valuable in streamlining the gear I carry. Also, the "double your light" video was fantastic; it made me realize the full potential of the reflectors that I always kept in my bag. BBTPM BBTPM BBTPM bring back the puppet Markus

    There is no one else who breaks down the practicalities of using different camera gear and techniques in different scenarios from years of real life production experience and experimentation the way you do and it's much appreciated. The fact this all comes from the heart with zero ego and no agenda apart from your love of all things photography is the icing on the cake . Greetings from London Markus and many thanks as always !

    Though you've always mentioned and discussed your quest to have the lightest setup (for the event/gig/whatever), for some reason this particular episode hit me as to understanding a bit better the conundrum you face. Tipping my hat to you Mr. Markus for your constant field work with different cameras and gear. We as a community are blessed to have some one (like yourself) to keep us in the loop.

    Markus, there is something to be said about your enthusiasm and experimentations. Speaking for myself, you have made me rethink how I go about photography during traveling. Though, I am not doing photo shoots on location like yourself, I do find myself at times, wanting to document and/or capture a scene. And for a long time, I would find myself carrying a lot of heavy (and at times, unnecessary gear) that essentially made the entire experience not be fun. Having made some downsizing, from a much smaller everyday/travel camera to simplifying the list of accessories, I find that I can achieve almost everything as before but with less hassle. All thanks to the informations provided in your videos. As you document your relentless pursuits in “going smaller,” you give us, the “average joes,” a glimpse into options we may have never knew existed. Kudos to you.

And while I don't think think the A6700 will be exactly what you would like, I am curious about the specific deal breakers for you and what you wished they would have done with their latest crop sensor hybrid camera instead.

    • @MarkusPix

    Love love love the channel. Markus Pix remains my number one source for learning about photography/videography. The flow, experience, background and settings are always enjoyable. Judging by the amount of equipment in this video, it looks like you are readying for another purge of unused items. I am headed in that direction as I need to divest and downsize. Too many pieces of equipment in the stable to take care. I would rather be out shooting than hatching equipment in the brooder room. LOL. Thanks Markus. Jim

    I've watched your uploads for many years now. I have gone through the whole role of cameras such as the Sony A7iii, Fuji System (XT1,2,3,XH1, XPro1,2 and X100s,V), Panasonic G85, S1, Nikon d70,90, 700, 800, 850 it goes on forever. I found after all of the years - my simple LX100 was the one I kept and used on travel on trips away, overseas deployments as a paramedic in the Solomon Islands and looking back - it has done me so well faithfully. I have got sucked up in the camera upgrade road and realize I am the one feeding this crazy road of perfection for what/who? The camera records memories. Some time back you made a video on the LX100 and it really does what I need. It has a decent zoom. It has great video for what I need. Small. Compact and very nice images. I feel whar you are trying to do. I really love your open and honest thoughts Markus. You are so honest and kind.

      I feel the same about the RX100vii. I have two of them and use them for filming all my TH-cam vidoes (including this one) I just hand one to Cara and say "ok start recording". Almost all my product shots, closeups, B-roll is done with them. The only time I use full frame is exotic locations like Bora Bora, Death Valley etc. The rest is just fun playing around hobby stuff.

    I understand your plight. I'm still in search of the lightest tripod that still has a very good fluid head pan and tilt experience for video. I'm usually using a C70 or C100mk1/mk2 for video these days since I'm filming talent wherever I go, but it's appealing to see that there are even smaller systems that could potentially give us a good image. I'm just one of those that doesn't like not having built in ND filters. I'm not a photographer but want to get into it so I appreciate your reviews that help me think through scenarios I've never considered

    great video. living the nomadic life myself I can definitely relate. I limit myself to a camera bag that fits under an airplane seat and half a carry-on suitcase. Really makes you think twice before buying something, at least in my case. Ended up with a7c, 2x godox v1, tamron 17-28, 28-75,70-300,150-500, sony 90 macro, three legged thing Brian, raynox 250, meike extension tubes, dji rcs2, dji mic, shure sm7b, mixpre 6 ii, rode arm, and a hand full of other stuff. still is pretty mobile, full frame and the best audio for podcast/teaching kinda setups. I find the analog limiters and the noise cancellation plugin you can buy for the mixpre to be the best I've ever used, had 3 different mic and interface combinations before this. No need at all really to do any editing in post, other than maybe boost the volume.

    FYI: There is a smaller smart trigger that works with Godox 2.4 Ghz system -- the Flashpoint R2SP trigger.
    The "SP" stands for "single pin," which means that it only has a single contact on the shoe just for triggering the flash. So, it doesn't have the extra proprietary contacts for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, etc., and thus it can't do high speed sync nor TTL.
    However, it has all of the other capabilities of the fancy smart triggers -- 32 channels, 5 groups, brightness control, zoom control, etc., plus it can act as a receiver as well as a transmitter and it has a hot shoe on top.

    I'm glad I discovered your channel, it saves me a lot of money. In the past I made a lot of bad buys and what you do I did on a smaller scale and gave the equipment away to someone who was happy with it. I now only have a Panasonic 4k webcam for my music channel, often even without an external microphone. As a tripod I often use a string from under my shoe to the bottom of the camera and pull it taut. Often you are not allowed to bring a tripod for safety reasons at concerts. Sometimes people make a fuss about a camera. That's why I keep my camcorder in a compartment of my bag where people never look at the entrance. If you have to aim your camera by hand for more than an hour, that becomes top sport. Now I'm smuggling in a self-made tripod in parts because I'm hampered by a progressive muscle disease. I can't operate the camera by hand for long standing. Now I film sitting from a greater distance and that goes well. My motto is "don't complain, just keep going" Markus it has become a long story. Thanks for your unsponsored opinions I appreciate them a lot. Greetings Peter Palm from Holland.

    Thanks for doing these videos Marcus. They are very useful as an insight how to travel with camera gear. When I am travelling and not focusing video and want to take mostly photos, I normally leave my bigger cameras at home. What I take instead is my Panasonic GH5, Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO and a Olympus 60mm f/2.8 macro lens, variable ND filters, Godox flash, extra batteries, some screwdrivers, colorchecker passport, SD card case that holds multiple cards and cleaning cloths and air blower. Using my GH5 with its low brightness screen with high reflections, I do know the importance of using the viewfinder.
    Although I have yet to find a good solution to carry my audio equipment as well if I want to take video. That is a Sennheiser ME66 & K6P microphone and windshield, rycote camera shoe shockmount , a few short and longer XLR cables and a Tascam DR 701D which I attach to the camera tripod mount, and a USB battery to power it. If I want to be more serious with audio, I bring my Sounddevices Mix Pre 3 instead of the Tascam and bring USB-C batteries for powering it. I just need smaller headphones than my Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (I don't like using earbuds) and way to carry all of that as well as the rest of my camera gear.

    When I started out on the full frame path I quickly learned to hate dragging the A73 or the A7S3 along when I had to carry the weight. What really changed my outlook was this Nite Ize waterproof packing cube I bought. It can hold my RX100M7, 6batteries+charger, Anker26800 bank, either Rode Go2 set or 2 Tentacle Track E's + 2 Sync E's(although I tend to just use the tentacle recorders and manually sync later), LED light, 2 GoPros, X3 360camera, mini tripod, various fittings and cables, variable ND filter, 3.5 mic(plugs into rx100), xtra sd cards, lens brush/blower and there is room for anything else that catches my eye. I found that I really enjoy working out of this small package in spite of its limiting nature because it's so easy to carry or store in the packraft/kayak. You're not mad at all....or at least not mad on this.

    Good fun and I feel I’ve been on the same trip, just not as broad a selection, and I don’t use flash, or tripods. I found even Q2 became heavy when walking all day. So back to Sony, my old NEX came out again and you can just walk about all day with that in your hand, so up I went to A6400, not bad. So I reached a bit further and A7c with my Zeiss lens from my A7R iv kit, and I was back where I started, heavy. I’ve got that Leica C-lux 3 in my pocket and I love it, but like you said, we need a viewfinder, so it’s up and down and up and down. But it is good fun.

    Marcus, can you do a video about how you plan these trips for photography purposes? Do you have a bucket list of specific places? Or maybe a list of scenes you have mind? Or just a destination and then you research for specific sessions that you can shoot while at that destination?
    How do you both plan for these amazing shoots?

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually I plan nothing. When I get to a location, I look around real quick. if its a destination resort, I go scouting the day before a note locations and time of day with cell phone

    Going on a cruise in March, plan on taking one too many cameras, GR3, Go2, 360 one R, Osmo pocket, Tough TG-6, Harinezumi 3, and maybe the
    Sprocket rocket and the Paper Shoot. All small cameras.📷📸📷😂

    As recovering OCD formerly in the Hollywood scenic arts, I trust your assessments. I only bring my Canon g7x, and get creative & concentrate on location, blocking, and staging on the go to compensate for finer aesthetics - basically creating a parody of real photography, but it sometimes leaves an impression. Not doing it much lately, so I'm seeking inspiration from you.

    As a travel camera I was considering the Nikon z30 but it does not have a EVF useful in bright light. Now I am considering a Nikon ZFC - APSC as a compact camera as it does have the EVF and is very small. I do have a Z5 FF Nikon, but it can be bulky sometimes for general travel or everyday use, so I wish to add a lighter compact camera. The Lumix I am also considering like the G100. Thanks for showing all your various cameras and I watch a lot of your recent videos!

    I totally get the mad scientist aspect of a hobby like photography. I shoot film on an old Nikon F Series SLR. Being out in the field, swapping lenses & filters, changing film, taking light readings, setting up tripods. It all takes a certain discipline and quick decision-making. But when the shots come out nicely, it's worth the hassle.

    I can certainly appreciate your process. For me, light and fast means one body and one lens, and maybe one light. It looks like you're still in process of finding that one combination that works for you.
    For me, I'm OK with a slightly bigger body as long as I can get at least an APS-C sensor and a good amount of resolution so I can shoot with the perspective I want and crop for the composition I want because I'm only going to have one lens and that lens will be normal to wide. Lately it's been the Canon R7 with the RF 28mm. Good resolution, reasonably small enough (since it's the only thing I'm carrying) and good enough performance.

    I definitely get it. It is probably a good thing that my budget doesn't stretch to all the different types of camera gear as I'd buy it. What I do respect is that you have time for low end gear as well as high end stuff. Some of the low end stuff is brilliant (for the cost) and gets everyone enjoying the hobby.

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its much more fun accomplishing stuff with "low end" stuff. It also requires a bit more know-how, talent and resourcefulness.

    Yes, Europe is great for photos, everything is so close with such variety. Yes, great to walk around with light kit but you need zooms since you are very limited to where you can stand (narrow streets, lots of traffic). Great public transport, mostly safe.

    Really appreciate your videos Markus. We share a passion for looking for the best balance between size and performance for photography. For me, APSC cameras / lenses seem to be the best option. Specifically, I’ve settled on the FUJi XT5 as my main body. Wondering why you’ve not given Fuji a try? Thanks.

    I'm in a similar situation with my gear. Going to Spanish Wells in the Bahamas in 2 weeks. I don't have small interchangeable lens cameras. The only one I have is a Sony A7III, but I only have one lens for it, it's a good one, but I want to bring a few for variety. I do have an adapter to mount Canon EF lenses, but the focusing is kind of slow when I use it. I'm not crazy about that. I may just bite the bullet and take that with the Sigma 28-70mm, but I want to take my 16-35mm, my 24-105mm and maybe even my 50mm for portraits. But the lightest Canon camera I have is the 6D. We'll see whatI decide. I bought 2 AD100s. They should actually be coming in today. Gonna leave my AD200s at home I think. Or maybe I'll bring one...lol I can't decide!!!😂

    • @DigitalSketcher
      @DigitalSketcher ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, so I just figured out what I'm going to do. I have an older flash trigger unit from Newer that I used to use for my Canon speedlites when I used to use them. The problem I had with the Sony cam is that the lens adapter I have just isn't always fast enough for my liking. However, what I plan on doing is bring it along, use the Sigma 28-70 and 16-35 for most of the time when I'm outdoors and then whenever I want to use my flash, I will attach the Neewer trigger to the Sony hotshoe, and then run a cable from the Neewer trigger to the Godox XPro and use THAT to control my AD100 and or AD200 flashes. This way I don't have to buy a Sony trigger. The camera itself is something I use for work, and they don't use Godox products. I can ask if they'd be willing to buy one, but since this is a personal trip, I feel kind of guilty doing that. So this is a great workaround. I can still use the exposure controls of the XPro, but since I'm using a Neewer trigger that's camera body agnostic, I can use that ON the Sony camera to trigger the lights :D See...I just saved myself about $60-$90 not buying a Sony trigger than I probably won't use much in my own personal photography because I use Canon cameras. Gotta think outside the box sometimes lol I'll just deal with the minor slowdown of the focusing from that adapter. I don't think it'll be too detrimental. I'll just use the Sigma lens which is much more responsive with the Sony cam and use the other Canon lenses when I've got time to sit and think of the shot vs just running around like a crazy person on my vacation.
