  • Before commenting on redundancy, I always buy the expensive high end SD cards and have NEVER EVER in 20 years and using HUNDREDS of them, have NEVER had a card go bad on me or lose data. Use a cheap camera if you want, but ALWAYS use the best SD cards! Many people are obsessed with how many card slots a camera has or XLR inputs or 10 bit 422 4K 120 Log and Luts etc. Just buy high quality SD cards so you dont need redundancy. People should pick a camera by how it makes them feel, not by what the latest greatest camera is for photography or video. Here are some good examples. In this video, I feature three similar camcorder cameras... the Sony AX100 AX700 and Z90V 1 inch sensor camcorders for video vlogging photography. The Sony AX100 came out in January 2014 and has only 1 card slot, poor autofocus and no picture profiles, logs or XLR inputs. But I like it more than the Sony AX700 and Sony Z90V which both have many more pro features and awesome eye tracking autofocus. So why do I like the older Sony AX700 camcorder as the best one for me? It's smaller, lighter, simpler and has in my opinion the best color. It makes me feel good. I like simple and small. That's just me. Newer, bigger and more expensive is not always better.

@MarkusPix, that's all fine and dandy, if you have the money to buy the high end of things (assuming that your experience with buying high end is the only experience anyone ever has with "high end" products and nobody else EVER had any "high end" products fail), or if you don't use the same gear to the extent that some of us do. I've had brand new cards from top brands fail me in the first week and I've had older cards that I've used reliably fail. It's a weird flex you're making here.

Good points. Although the double slot is really about redundancy, not length of recording. It’s mostly for wedding videographers and people that can’t afford to do a redo and losing footage is devastating to their business. True that 99% of filmmakers need a single card. I’ve had a corrupted SanDisc card after a shoot but thankfully the footage wasn’t that important! 😅

Agree. I've had a micro sd card failing on my phone. When plugged in, it crashes the Windows PC's Explorer process. Or the computer hangs for minutes, then snaps back to life for 30 seconds and loops like that. That's one of the ways how a memory card hardware fault looks like. So dual card slots is a must when possible. It's like opting out of cloud storage backup for a corporation's shared network drives, or SharePoint. When the information on the card matters, you need 2 cards if you can afford the extra cost. The more you shoot, the more likelyhood of card failure. You might be lucky and not get failure in years. But luck is not good enough. Also, air moisture and temperature are factors that affect electronics reliability, so different people, different memory card failure experiences. Unstoppable Coppier is a great FREE software for recovering data from problematic memory cards.

Absolutely!! As a young still photographer I learned very quickly to be economical with my shots. I could very easily blow a week's budget in a few seconds with an auto-winder, but by planning ahead, and knowing what I wanted to capture, I could get "The Shot" with just two or three frames, even when shooting fast action shots. Digital photography (and filmography) has allowed people to be lazy about the craft.

I'm a double card slot fanboy for rudundancy when doing weddings. You can retake a hollywood scene, but not so much a wedding or similar one off event. I feel it would be a disservice to clients to turn up with one slot in a time when two is an easy option. For everyday stuff I'm good with one slot. To Marcus's point, I dont know how many people want two slots just to do relay recording.😊

You can redo anything, the question is only the price, and I bet redoing a film is likely more expensive than any wedding. And you are kidding yourself thinking another card slot buys you anything. If you need redundancy, think about the second body and lens, those are more likely to fail than a card.

@USGrant21st Hope all is well. Grant, are you kidding me that you can genuinely redo a wedding or one off interview/event? No budget can fix that!!! It's all about reducing possible points of failure. And of course, any pro will have a back up body(with two slots of course 😀) and lens. Two things can be true at once. The day will come when all cameras will be able to auto sync to cloud. Then I'll backup for my backup and be even happier 😉

In the film industry, the modern one, we never record on two cards at once. But we do roll one card over to the next, which is why we have the second card slot. It’s not for redundancy. It’s not necessary. But can be nice in situations like a multiple hour interview with a high profile person.
That said, we have a DIT (digital imaging technician) aka, a nerd at a computer station, checking the footage as it comes in.
My recommendation is always to schedule the time to import footage on set and give some clips a Quick Look. Make sure both the card and camera are capturing properly. Don’t put all of your eggs in a 500gb basket. Break the day up into several downloads.
If your production is tiny (just you) schedule the break for you to do this yourself. Make sure things are working.
And if you have an inexperienced helper or maybe a production assistant,
Then schedule the time to do this yourself.
And if you’re shooting a documentary and rolling all day non stop, well… sometimes sh*t happens. But even on Netflix documentaries we don’t shoot on two cards at once.

I get what some are saying about the redundancy thing, but I've never had a card fail on me, thank goodness. I've been filming and taking photographs for almost 25 years and I guess I'm lucky/fortunate enough not to have never had that happen to me before. The only time I ever used a dual card slot function is when I was on location taking photographs of a dance competition, and I wanted to be able to scroll through the photos on my tablet once the event was over and not have to have it chug through the high resolution images. I had one card record at a very small JPG format so I could just pull that card and easily scroll through the images on the table. But that was a very specific need that I didn't have to deal with much at all. Lol and yes, I do shoot in RAW even though I know you don't do that very often :D With dance competitions, the lighting changes so often between performances that sometimes I don't have time to go through to make adjustments on the fly. So having RAW images does help with that. It's annoying, and I wish it wasn't the case, but I made the mistake of shooting JPG only one time and I regretted it because there were some performances that had very dark and moody lighting, and I just didn't like the way the JPG images turned out in those low light settings. Anyway...now I'M the one who's ranting lol

I love my AX100, but I would still love to have an AX700 because of the autofocus advantage.
Your frugality lesson from the past reminds me of my teacher from the film days. He had been a Vogue photographer in London and Paris. He was adamant about getting it right in camera. He would say that if you need to spend more than ten seconds on an image in the darkroom you have failed. He only had three rules: One - lighting, Two - lighting, Three - lighting. Of course he did shoot polaroids as he perfected the set up before taking the shot, although it was rare for him to use more than one polaroid, and I suspect the polaroid was more for reassuring the art director than his own needs. I was the guy with the Weston Master, and soaking in everything, observing that after controlling the light, the most important thing was how he handled the model. The camera and lens was just an incidental tool. The magic happened between the light and the way he interacted with the model.

Mostly I am using 1080p, rarely 4k, once I did more than 6h 4k footage and it overheated but with 3h 4k videos it's fine. I had 2x corrupted SD cards one time there weren't important files the second time I managed to get back 75% of the footage. The second card slot is nice if 1 of the memory cards fails.

Thanks for your perspective. I agree 100% planning with as much detail as you can is very important. A "fix it in post" as your go-to is not the best way to spend your money, your time, or other people's time for that matter.
Oh, btw, on the "other page" it's noted as an AD700 as opposed to AX700, Fyi.

Two hours of 4K footage is so cumbersome to work with, especially when there is only a few minutes of interesting footage to extract!

The stuff I already own has more features than I can use effectively and the stuff you give away generally has a price point so high I'd be afraid to take it out into the world, knowing I couldn't replace it if it got stolen or damaged. Love your stuff man, I had the Ax100 for a short time. Really liked it. I have the NX-80 now. I will push back on the dual card slot take because I don't use it for over recording, I use it for a simultaneous recording as a back up. So 2 cards slots are very legitimate for that purpose. I agree on being conservative with when you start and stop the recording.

And how do you treat these cards? Have you ever plugged it into a PC to do TRIM, or error checking, are they both in exFAT format, how many hours of write on each card is there?
Just saying "oh my SD card get corrupted so now I am paranoid" instead of actually locating the source of the issue you replace your entire gear? Come on, thats ridicules.
The place I work has over 300 SD cards, all organised, they are checked, they are rated by life span remaining and how many hours each, not one of them has failed, if they reach 80% lifespan or certain write hours, they are destroyed and thrown away.
Also, never fill your SD cards full, that increases chances of issues, FAT32 is also a big issue with errors as it possess no error checking in the format itself, exFAT does however, some cameras like Samsung even accept ext4 format which is even superior to exFAT.

I really enjoy using the ax53. The only thing I find restricting is the choice of frame rate. We can only work in PAL or NTSC. I’m not sure why they are restricted this way but we are forced to stay with our regions’ TV frame rates. I managed to find a hack for my PAL ax53 so that 30 and 60fps are available to me and I can switch back to PAL if I need to. I personally find 30FPS nicer to watch on TV’s and monitors than 25.

Modern equivalent might be a used SR card I guess but I’m also thinking that decent media can be very expensive also (not compared to film OC but still pricey)
I shoot on mainly a mirrorless Fuji or a Blackmagic (unless a client specifies Red or Arri but this rarely happens) so I used a min or v60 SD cards or a Cfast on the BM! So, I’m frugal too, but more in the sense of battery conservation and running out of space than actual cost tbh but I total agree with your comment. I studies film & tv when SVHS was the best prosumer option with beta cam out of reach. Always entertaining. Ps. On your love of all things small, I recently got a Sony Rx100 Va. I need a second card slot for redundancy. It is not about the length of time I can record video for on one memory card, as you can higher capacity cards that will let you record for a long time and or swap cards for another one when you need more record time.
In the past I used ProGrade Digital V90 cards with my Panasonic GH5 and one day I travelled over 40 miles to a mountain to record video footage there. While I was doing that, one of the only two SD cards I had with me, stopped working correctly and I lost some of the footage I needed. The other card worked fine the whole time. This is why I appreciate now using my Panasonic S5II with its dual card slots, so I can use one for backup recording and there is less chance of losing photo and video footage again if one card fails while I am using the camera.

Two card slots will not always save you. My Gh5M2 had a card go bad during a wedding ceremony, it triggered something in the camera and stopped recording to the other card a few seconds later. I lost half the wedding. Whereas my old A6500 has never stopped recording or corrupted a file.

  • @DigitalSketcher
    @DigitalSketcher 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think some of the dynamic range uses may be in situations when you're running and gunning and may not have the time or convenience of setting up a shot. I see a lot of people running around shooting things on the fly. I do it too sometimes when I'm filming for work and don't have the ability to set up a shot the way I want because of the condition I'm in. In those situations, getting good dynamic range can definitely help. Yes, sometimes all it takes is a few minutes to adjust your settings/exposure to get things right. But sometimes I'm filming something on location and the nature of where I am, what I'm shooting and who I'm shooting with doesn't always lend itself for stopping and adjusting. Sometimes I have to just roll and then go back in and make adjustments. Yes, it's annoying, but having a camera with good quality dynamic range is definitely helpful. I wish I could pack the look and functionality of my C100MkII into a smaller camcorder body lol Figure out how that would work and get back to us :D
