There must be some weird interaction with the microphone because, like he said (and I can attest, I have a T-40), you can hardly hear it in person, especially below ~2000RPM.

@@nathangoodson7390can also attest to this, my window fan is louder than this thing at 2000 rpm. It’s so quiet at normal speeds that it honestly borders on dangerous lol

I bought a T40 almost 2 years ago and I have been pretty happy with it, though I have some complaints. I will be interested to see if you will encounter the same problems. I noticed the Richard Raffan-style dust hood you created in your next video and wondered if you could still rotate the headstock with the collector in place. Rotating the headstock is by far the best feature of the lathe! Congratulations on the new shop, it looks fantastic!

Turning that spindle - I would suggest some protection for the spindle threads.
Having to reach over the headstock to the controls seems questionable.

    Dear Tomislav,
Great to see you back in action. I do not intend changing my Oneway 1640 but I must say the T-40 seems very interesting. Harvey tools take a lot of caution in packing their impressive products. I did buy a bench saw sliding table from them and the quality both of the product and packing were above standard.
    Happy turning. 😊

I have that same lathe Tomislav. I've had it a year and I have no complaints. I was initially surprised how quiet mine was at 1000 rpm. And that motor never gets hot. Rotate that headstock about 20 degrees when you are turning the inside of bowls. It's a back saver. I also got the extended banjo that mounts on the end of the bed below the motor. Just in case I decide to turn something larger than 14". Congratulations on the new lathe and your new building. I enjoy watching you turn.

I have been wanting to hear from a professional turner on this lathe. Likes: self ejecting in the tailstock quill, and the tailstock lock lever doesn’t seem to fall down and self lock. I would like to hear more about that motor which is a unique choice, and the quality/durability of the spindle lock. That rapid acceleration of the motor may seem nice but I know it would have gotten me in trouble a few times. The switch gear I wish was remote mountable down closer to the tailstock end. I look forward to seeing and hearing what you think after really getting to know it.

This is the lathe that I have. I love it. I love the power and features. I also like how you can set the speed to zero and turn the switch on and it keeps the chuck from spinning. It's good for holding your piece where you want it without having to engage the lock. I will say after about 3 years I'm having a small problem with the switch not engaging first time every time. And my motor doesn't sound like that, mine is whisper quiet. 🤔 I'll be upgrading to the big Harvey soon. 🤞

Actually, the blue, three prong plug is indeed part of the European standard (evidenced by the round prongs set back in the shell, and one of them being larger than the other). They are single phase, with ground. Best used in industrial/outdoor/damp areas where you need the security of an earth connection. I run an older three phase motor on my lathe, in Germany, and the three-phase connector uses 5 pins: 4 standard pins for each phase and neutral, and one oversized pin for ground. You can always tell an IEC plug by the round pins laid out symmetrically inside a shell, with one being thicker than the others for ground.

The Harvey lathe looks like a great lathe. My only criticism from what you’ve shown is the motor noise. It seems to whine more than your other lathe. It’s even louder than my Laguna 1524 which is only a hobby level machine. I’m happy with it except for the banjo design which is poor at best. It works but it’s a poor design in my opinion.

Very nice looking quality lathe. It appears to compare favorably with the midi teaching lathe I own, the PM2014 in terms of cost and functionality. In the US I would say that is probably the only other lathe that would be that close to the Harvey. The obvious difference is the power requirement of 220V vs 110 for the Powermatic. The other big difference is the rotating headstock vs the sliding HS on the PM. I think it is important for anyone buying a lathe to actually find someone who has one and try it out. How the turner personally feels about specific lathe features can make all of the difference in the world. I am sure you will enjoy it. Is this the 4th lathe you have had in your shop over the last two years, Tomi?

    • @tonyturnswood
      @tonyturnswood หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think the PM is a significantly more robust machine, it's not as flashy, but it's solid and has years of dependability behind it. There are no 10 year old Harvey lathes out there to have any idea if they will be as reliable as the PM over time. ( that servo motor makes me nervous for a heavy duty machine )

Other stuff I'm confident it will be ok as its robust and really nice quallity feel.... Powermatic was on my wish list and I think its probably best company for every woodworking machine out there.... Maybe one day I'll have one😄.
Aaa yes its forth lathe in 2 years, but I was always trying to upgrade to a level as Killinger as I have now and this Harvey Will be great addition to teaching and filming.
Also When Mike Mahoney likes it then it should be ok for me 😄😄...
Thank you Mike for watching 🤗

    Many, many thanks Tomasic.
Whoops I think I used your surname instead of of your given name. My apologies.

This lathe is making a strange noise. Maybe the belt is to tight.

Pleased that everything is going well with your move and new shop setup. Looking forward to more of your videos which are undoubtedly the best explanatory ones out there and from a consummate professional. But honestl that lathe motor sounds awful, like it's having the mechanical equivalent of a heart attack.😮 There is no way I could put up with that for long----sorry

Thank you very much, no need for sorry as its different motor and lathe for me as well... It remind me of old lathe I learn on from BRATSTVO STROJEVI that were soo loud when just turned on without wood... Can't wait to put it through the tests
