Team Romania took the silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Aurelia Dobre,
Eugenia Golea, Celestina Popa, Gabriela Potorac, Daniela Silivaș, and Camelia Voinea showed an outstanding performance. We bring you team Romania's highlights from the balance beam. Enjoy!

I like the open ended code - however, I agree with everyone that the FIG really needs to reevaluate the current code because most routines are starting to look cookie cutter, especially on bars and beam. Gymnastics is kinda boring to me rn, and not as interesting. Maybe they should add a bonus for incorporating unique skills and movements.

The 1988 team is unquestionably the most talented group of gymnasts Romania ever produced, even more than the teams from 2000 & 2004 where they won team gold.
Agreed. The 87/88 teams had a lot of style. Romanians afterwards won on their consistency but Belu drained all the style out of them. Remember, there was a different head coach at this time, Adrian Goreac.
I’ll have to disagree with you somewhat. I think the best Romanian team was back in 84 with Pauca, Agache, and Szabo

I miss the Golden Era of Gymnastics, and Seoul-1988 was the end of it.
The 1988 and 1989 Soviet and Romanian teams were amazing.

I don’t miss it. An era where only a couple of countries were granted the best scores, no matter who else was more deserving… an era where the athletes were forced into a specific, tiny, skinny and unhealthy looking mold of appearance and who were abused incessantly in the name of winning gold… and era that is thankfully gone by the wayside.

@@tambam6744 You can train in a healthy manner and still have an attention to detail, a level of presentation, that is rarely seen anymore. Today's gymnastics is just so...sloppy. That has nothing to do with body type or abusive training. It's just lack of fundamentals that started when compulsories went the way of the dodo.

Potorac and Popa were criminally underrated. Great gymnasts but overshadowed by Silivas and Dobre.

Aurelia Dobre is my all time fav. She was the reigning world all-around champion but unfortunately she had knee surgery before the games. Had she been 100% I truly believe she would have been Olympic Champion.

You can tell the training was way more intense then. These routines are textbook. Compared to what we saw last year at the World Championships, the current gymnasts looks like amateurs, without exaggerating.
And don’t even mention this year’s Olympics. The worst bb final I have ever seen.

This is so much better than the Paris Olympics finals where 5 out of 8 fell down including the clunky Simon Biles 😂
They land their front tucks solid whereas Simone almost fell on her front tuck on beam in 2016 Olympics and hasn't done front tuck on beam since...she is definitely not the Goat on beam

@@JennaLeigh well people complain about modern day gymnastics being ugly or horrible, but they look past the blatant flaws of the golden era of gymnastics.
@@josephqualtier961 no argument there. What I think most people are referring to is the artistry of 70's/80's/90's gymnastics. As a fan, you know what I mean! Once upon a time, to be the very best in elite WAG, you simply HAD to have a strong dance background- ballet specifically.
The grace, balance, and poise that ballet teaches is invaluable- and seeing a lot of this never generation exposes that. Don't get me wrong, the entire world's WAG programs have progressed enormously. The difficulty these ladies are competing is truly astounding. But in the rush to add skill•skill•skill•connection•skill•bonus 0.1 has created a place in which a crucial element of artistic gymnastics-- the ARTISTRY, the ARTISTIC in Artistic Gymnastics, has been all but abandoned.
I know lots of people like to say "if you wanna see dance elements, go watch dance/figure skating/cheerleading", but there really does need to be a balance of artistic skills meshed with world class tumbling.
@@JennaLeigh I just think the older gymnasts get too much praise in a way that brings down current gymnasts. Gymnastics isn’t some niche Eastern European sport anymore, western styles have influenced it a lot and I think that it’s totally fine. Not everything has to be classical ballet style to be artistic or beautiful. Yes it helps but there have been some awesome more upbeat routines in the past that aren’t classical at all for example larisa iordache in 2014

Apparently Simone biles is the greatest ever no one even comes close to comparing to her..at least that’s what I keep hearing. Nothing against Biles but I think she is overhyped. These women also did amazing different things
No, she just won more awards because she doesn't have strong competition at the moment. She's far from being the best ever, she isn't a perfect 10 like Nadia Comaneci.

Dobre obviously had a few balance problems and missed at least one connection. It shows that she wasn't as happy and relieved as the others were. Which is a shame, as she had the most interesting routine.

Even the body of them were different, the weist very thin, I miss this, today there is so many rules, it's boring to watch. If i step on beam...wait just to think i already fall 🤭
România had its glory age but no one knows how much these talented girls sacrificed if they life, they were tortured by the coaches and the system in order to have success results, nonstop training, starvation, physical and verbal punishment on every mistake, they even kept the money prizes from them !!! As much as I enjoy watching them I cannot forget what they went through

The Romanian team won the silver medal, the previous year these ladies won team gold at World's (with Ecaterina Szabo instead of Gabriella Potorac.)

Potorac with arguably the best beam of the Games. Yes, Daniela was great but Gabriela had more difficult mount and dismount while the rest of their routines was equally perfect in both cases.
All we have now is tumbling. Gymnasts who don’t even need to try for this level of grace. And now they get a pass for hopped landings besides. Why is that?

Where’re team Romania gymnastic at Olympics 2012-2020
Why do you ask? How many decades do you think a gymnastics team should last? All the great teams have had periods of eclipse.
Romania has had a threefold issue that has seen them not as present at the Olympics in recent years. One, the open ended scoring system forced them to have to add much more difficulty to their routines, rather than just enough to get by. Second, they can no longer treat them like property and train them like machines, meaning the athletes don’t have to deal with abuse. That last part is important as no athlete should ever be treated as such. Third, a loss of coaching infrastructure. They are getting that part back, slowly.

This team was world champion the year before and Dobre was AA champion...they also won the beam floor vault in that world championship. The video is from 1988 olympics were they won silver as a team.but 3 gold medals in the event finals... Dobre was after surgery..so she couldn t defend her world title.

@@josephqualtier961 I mean can you honestly picture many gymnasts today getting through compulsories without looking like Godzilla stomping through the city? I was watching the 1996 compulsories not long ago and was trying to picture today's gymnasts doing it. Maybe the Chinese could do okay, a couple Russians. But that's about it.
180 was not mandatory for leaps so they did not train them. It all depends on the era they belong to. You can't deny the originality though. And consistency.

You do realise 88 was 35 years ago, do you? Fashion did change over this time, but these executions are still breathtaking.
And frankly, i think nothing is as kitschy as the sequined leotards used in today's gymnastics, as well as their ill fit on the muscular bodies belonging to the gymnasts of today.
