USSR, Romania, and East Germany--clearly the big three in gymnastics at that time. Even today Russia and Romania still have some of the best training programs in the world for this sport. On behalf of the United States of America, hats off to all three of these teams.
Yeah, a country that had horrible men like Lenin and Stalin at the head of their government. A country that persecuted its own people for 70 years, and Eastern Europe for half a century. A country that allowed no freedom of speech, religion, or press. A country that abused its athletes with barbaric methods. That's epic alright.
@Johannes Cailles Guttenburg According to the A&E documentary More Than a Game, the Soviet coaches would have some of their gymnasts impregnated so that they could absorb the nutrients of a pregnant woman. After that, they would abort the baby. Former Soviet gymnasts who coach in the US and Canada like Olga Korbut and Elvira Saadi have been reported for abuse. I know the American gymnastics system has had its share of abuse, but it was not systemic abuse and the coaches were later caught and fired. The Soviet coaches, on the other hand, were never fired and the athletes would have most likely never been allowed to compete if they tried to report their coaches to anyone. That is how they abused their athletes.
I think the most interesting aspect of this footage is how you get to see the gymnasts' faces so up-close... Shushunova had a very rare eye colour, Shevchenko was beautiful, and Boguinskaya's face was one of the most exotic I've ever seen...
That is all correct. Romania was under a vicious dictatorship, even worse than the Soviets. I was always uncomfortable with the Romanians then, it the same I am with North Korean gymnasts now, they too were not allowed to mix with others And the Romanian supporters were the party workers that were allowed out of Romania. Getting rid of that industrial symbol was very important for Romania. Nobody at this time imagined what would happen. Even at the 1989 Worlds, about two weeks before the Berlin Wall came down, nobody knew that change would come fast. And Nelson Mandela was realised in 1990.

Not exactly. I remember the U.S. potentially finishing in the bronze medal position but there was some controversy over an American girl remaining on the podium while her teammate was on the bars (Phoebe Mills i think). The U.S. Team was then given a 3-tenth deduction from their Team Standing and that's exactly what they lost by. From what i heard, there were a handful of German judges underscoring the American Team and overscoring the German Team as well.
Two things I noticed for the first time: first, Martina Jentsch, who was injured and couldn't compete in the team final, was able to walk out for the medal ceremony. Makes me wonder if she was really injured or something else was going on. Second, after the East Germans got their medals, two were ready to walk off the podium before the anthem. You'd think they'd never been a part of a medal ceremony before.
@@DesertStreams002 I’ve read a interview with Martina, she said that the coaches wanted her to compete in the team finals. After she refused she got the cold shoulder from them,Later when it turned out that both of her feet were broken, some of them apologized to her. Olga Strazheva injured her knee during her balance beam routine. She had to be carried off the podium. From there, the Soviet team had to finish with 5 athletes. No problem.
