  • Watch the complete process of etching glass with the Glass on the Fly method I have been working on. No special preparation, chemicals or materials needed. This video will show you the entire process and a few tips that may help solve some issues you may be having. I am getting consistent results and hope you do also. It is so easy.. Burns without any smoke or smells. Give it a try and I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing some of your results. This is just a process for etching glass and will work no matter what side you want your etching on. Just reverse your graphic and it will be on the front when you're done. For framed things and keepsakes, I like mine on the inside. They stay cleaner and don't get picked at. Just my preference. This is an unedited video in real time so you can see the entire process as it happens. No tricks or mirrors! Have Fun! I have used this process on acrylic also. Default 50/50 power and speed.(Higher power at lower speed is creating a nicer effect. See the updated videos. 40mm/s speed - 90 power)
    Glass on the Fly is just that. A quick and easy way to laser etch glass without painting or applying any masking materials.
    I am constantly experimenting and looking for new materials.
    The most up to date information is on the website.

    Companion, it is an honor to tell him that I have tried his method of engraving on glass and it has been wonderful. I did not imagine that he could record it.

    I use the same process and get banding every once and a while, and my waste board is perfectly flat. I put a wire wheel on the grinder and lightly go over the etching, it takes it right off. The glass is being fractured, and the ink from the paper is being vaporized into the fractures. So the wire wheel not only fixes any banding, but it also brings out the detail. Give it a shot.

      I have used scotch bright on it every once in a while. Never thought to get that aggressive, but do see it working. Will have to give it a try! Thanks!! I stay away from coated or shinny papers for a backing. They do tend to blead up into the glass more. I use a matt finish cardboard and doing great with it.

      @@dkbrown1060 I've been using motor oil and craft paper for about a year now with good results. Oh, and the fractured glass will get into the pours of the skin. I found that out pretty quick! That's when I started using the soft wire wheel on the grinder. It's fast, easy and makes it look really nice!

    Super job. I have also worked on glass with the laser, but never achieved such good results. My question: what kind of black paper or foil do you use as a background? Is it normal cardboard? I would be happy if you could help me. Lovely greetings from Switzerland.

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you!! It's something I have been playing because the alternatives didn't appeal to me at all. Guess I'm just lazy and wanted fast and easy. I used the router to cut a small area in the frame for the strip LEDs. Those were just what I had here and worked fine to get it figure out, I have nicer ones coming and there will be plenty more of those coming. Doing one now with 3 pieces of glass.. All etched. It looks amazing!

    • @dkbrown1060
      @dkbrown1060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you and you are welcome! I had to cut a groove in the frame for the LED lights. That was just a mock up trying to get the lighting right. I'm going to have to make my own frames to get what I'm looking for. More coming on that.

    I think it'd be best to have the laser sit on top of a granite surface plate. That'd be about as flat as you could get

    What are your settings? Power? mm/s? Lines per CM? Etc..... Thank you so much. I have the etching on glass down pretty good. My problem is now I'm trying to etch portraits like I do on wood on glass and they don't come out nice like yours....

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a lot that I call 'cheating' by painting the glass black. Then burning the paint off and painting it white to make it pop. They look awesome. Just worried about the durability and there is no 'etching' in the glass. 80/80 is my go-to starting point. 80 power @ 80mms.. The latest info is on the website. viperdesigned.com/laser/glassonthefly.html

    Well I can't believe how easy this was. Work out pretty good. Thinking how would this work on plexiglass? Another thought, The thicker the glass more power and less speed?. Bottom line great video.

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe, Thats what I'm talking about! :) People seem to think it is so difficult when it's one of the easiest projects you can do with the laser. I have a video doing this on acrylic. It's a little trickier and mostly depends on the grade of acrylic you get. Some of the cheap ones pop or flake pieces out. th-cam.com/video/kIlP8GzB87g/w-d-xo.html

    • @dkbrown1060
      @dkbrown1060 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, did the glass the same way, but not happy with the effect. Still working on getting the lighting right so the glow is even all the way across. Heavy dark spot in the middle now. I'll work on a new frame setup once the weather breaks a little and I can get back out to the shop.

    I am having trouble hearing you. What did you spray on the glass to clean it when it had finished engraving?

    • @dkbrown1060
      @dkbrown1060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Goof Off is what I use first to clean it when it's done. Washes everything right off. Then wipe down with window cleaner is all. I'm workin on the mumblin' part :)

    When filming with your camera, turn your camera on its side for a better quality video. I use my phone for filming and I found that turning it on its side is like night and day with the quality of the video. Give it a go, see how it turns out for you.

    • @viperdesigned

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was one of the first things I had tried. I really liked how it went on and dried quickly, but the 'wet' chemicals seemed to out perform it.. I may have to give it another try. I'm still experimenting and trying new things.

      @viperdesigned  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! That is on a piece of glass. A cheap piece of glass out of a dollar store picture frame. I'm still playing with mirrors and some lightbox ideas. Just got a large 3D printer to help me with that..

    So what did you spray on the rag, dry lube or WD40?

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm getting better results on the cups without anything. Just doing them dry. Had an epiphany moment on the last video. I will be revisiting the flat glass and tweaking that process a little more. Both the dry lube and WD worked OK. Moved to 3in1 oil and it worked better. May be rethinking that soon, but it does work as is.

    Hi, you've wrote that you use 50/50 power and speed. But it's look like that it this is a faster speed. I've tried it too but it doesn't workred. What am I doing wrong?

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. This does work, but there is an updated video with different settings. Plain matt black cardboard works good and been running it about 90 power and 40mm/s for speed.

  • @chrisduty2886
    @chrisduty2886 หลายเดือนก่อน

    what led strips are you using to edge light that brother? Other question as I don't have a Xtool machine is where is the focal point of the laser in this process?

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Chis, I just used some cheap LED strip from the dollar store. It was about 3' long but could be cut to size. I think it was only $3-$5 with a remote.. I don't do anything fancy with the focus. I just set the height to the top of the glass like I would any other project and it works just fine for me.

    • @chrisduty2886
      @chrisduty2886 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@viperdesigned so focal point is top of the glass? My lasers a neje its fixed focal at 25mm to surface, machine has a z axis so say I'm cutting 10mm I can set the beam in 5mm for first cut then 10mm second cut. I guess I'm going to have to play around and figure out if surface, middle or to the card-stock is best. Anyhow thanks for the prompt reply and excellent work and channel, you got a new sub.

    Would the process be the same for mirrors?

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People have been doing mirrors just backwards.. isn't that fitting.. :) They are burning the mirror coating off from the back. Not sure a laser will focus on a mirror from the front. You could coat the glass with acrylic paint or masking paper and do an etching on the front of the glass.

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't think these have the power to pernitrate or truely engrave metal. They will get threw the finish to the metal for the engraved look. Have seen that done but haven't tried it myself yet.
