Hi, I just discovered your channel. Awesome stuff!! I am very new to the topic of laser engraving. I want to engrave some labels on to a rack panel, which is made of 2mm steel sheet and has a layer of thick powder coat on it. Is this possible with a diode laser and if so, what optical power is required? Thanks in advance!

why is it so hard to see if someone can engrave a painted tin container like for candles or pen holders? I should test it and upload a video since nobody does it when my laser comes in tomorrow
I’ve been playing with the idea of getting an xTool D1 with the primary goal of engraving 10mm Baltic birch and then filling the engraved areas with epoxy resin. I see the Harley engrave you did in this video: my question is, can this thing engrave like 5-7mm deep into a 10mm piece leaving a decent depth trough to fill? I can’t seem to find an answer to that question.
Theoretically yes. I would think it would take more time than you'd like to spend because you'd be doing multiple passes. And engraving over and area over and over like that could start a fire. For the application you're looking at, I think a CNC would be a better option. Cheers!
Love your videos and your warped sense of humor! How about 6mm MDF? Any cut/engrave settings you can offer this gal? Using a D1 with an enclosure and exhaust - no air assist yet. Thanks! Keep up the good work!
I’m so impressed with how well you center your designs. I’m having trouble understanding how to center and also how to know exactly where to place my material in the laser bed. Any tips?
I always try to place my material as close to the center of the bed as possible. And if I need to center a design I make the origin point the center instead of the upper left and star from there.
Great video, thanks. I'm hoping to get one of these as my K40 Chinesium C02 laser is malfunctioning. I just need to negotiate terns with she who must be obeyed. ; )... Subbed.
You can actually etch on stainless steel after coating the surface with mustard (or possibly vinegar--haven't tried it yet). My uncoated stainless steel attempt (with just a 5w laser) also caused smooth metal discoloration but the mustard coating actually created a rough surface.
In your opinion, is the lack of limit switches and, therefore, homing ability a big issue for the Xtool? At this level, that omission seems a bit strange.
I don't really have an issue with it. Where you may run into issues with it is if you have jig and set it up to zero in reference to the jig. The Aufero Laser 2 does't have limit switches either. I think they're trying to make the machines a little more user friendly and less intimidating. Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild I think that, with jigs, since you want to be able to remove and replace them, I would just put a couple of reference marks on the jig with the pattern and then line those up for each use. Then I suppose I would tape it down for the duration of the run. Just thinking out loud.
I don’t know what that saw blade is made out of, but you can “etch/engrave” direct to SOME metals, such as 4130 or anything with a heavy Molybdenum content.

Here's a copy of what's on their website:

Have you tried anodized aluminium??
Sure have!
@@BuildDadBuild how did it go? I'm thinking about getting a diod-laser to mark my products.

Puedo cambiar mi diodo de 5 w por uno de 10 w ..gracias ?
You can upgrade to the 10, yes
What programs do you use to get designs?
I mainly edit in Adobe Illustrator and use the xTool Laserbox Basic program to output.
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild Thanks for the reply! Do you think you could make a vid start to finish on a work piece weather it be a coaster, tumbler, or glass anything really, I see vids on the laser and I see vids on the software like laser burn, but I want to see something start to finish basically. Finding the design, setting the piece in place, setting the template of the work piece if any. Then hitting start and seeing it work and then the finished product.. Just an idea or if you have one similar maybe link it to me. All the vids I'm coming across are not for beginners with no knowledge of the laser world.. Thanks again for the reply... keep up the great vids..
@@matthewowensby3427 I would point you towards this playlist. Check it out and if there are more specifics you're looking for let me know. nick@builddadbuild.com
@@BuildDadBuild Thanks for the reply! I ended up goin through some more of your vids after the above comment, and I found the one where you made the snowflake Christmas ornament. That was the kind of vid I wanted to see.. Thanks again... keep up the great work..
@@matthewowensby3427 Noice!
why is it so hard to see if someone can engrave a painted tin container like for candles or pen holders? I should test it and upload a video since nobody does it when my laser comes in tomorrow
If it's painted or powder coated it should work fine.
interesting what is the cost machine
Depends on what machine you’re looking at. Here’s the link:
store.xtool.com/?ref=RyzFeVwU5QGEQ
What woods do IKEA use?
Cheers!
Can you cut fiber paper with this laser?
I don’t know what fiber paper is?
Semi Soft FiberFrax Fiber Kiln Paper 1/8" Thick Sheet
It is used in a kiln when working with glass.
Dunno.
do u think this can cut (LP) album?
Hey Joe!
Do not cut vinyl with a laser. Very harmful fumes.

@@BuildDadBuild even if its out in the open outside? CHEERS TO U
The gases can actually harm the laser and the belts as well.
can a pitcure from zedge be done
I'm not sure I understand this...
@@BuildDadBuild can i take a putcure from zedge that i have saved tonmy phone an use it for a engraving
I don't see why not.
Love your videos and your warped sense of humor! How about 6mm MDF? Any cut/engrave settings you can offer this gal? Using a D1 with an enclosure and exhaust - no air assist yet. Thanks! Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
Can't say I've cut 6mm MDF (it stinks) yet.
But I'm sure I will soon.

Have you tried cutting cordura fabric?
I have not.
@@BuildDadBuild Roger. I been curious on it.
@@BuildDadBuild ok definitely practicing! Thank you
Great video, thanks. I'm hoping to get one of these as my K40 Chinesium C02 laser is malfunctioning. I just need to negotiate terns with she who must be obeyed. ; )... Subbed.
Welcome to the Fray!
And good luck with the...you know....negotiations...LOL

Tell her that climate change requires all of us to save on CO2, and that changing to a diode laser will save lives.
It arrives next week guys! 💥
You can actually etch on stainless steel after coating the surface with mustard (or possibly vinegar--haven't tried it yet). My uncoated stainless steel attempt (with just a 5w laser) also caused smooth metal discoloration but the mustard coating actually created a rough surface.
Awesome!
I have a video coming soon with another cheap way to mark metal!
Stay tuned!

Try Brilliance spray. You'll love the results. And it washes off with just water.
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild Thanks.
@@BuildDadBuild I think that, with jigs, since you want to be able to remove and replace them, I would just put a couple of reference marks on the jig with the pattern and then line those up for each use. Then I suppose I would tape it down for the duration of the run. Just thinking out loud.
Superbes vidéos ! J’adore !
Just bought this.. waiting on delivery
You'll dig it. Let me know if you have any questions.

I don’t know what that saw blade is made out of, but you can “etch/engrave” direct to SOME metals, such as 4130 or anything with a heavy Molybdenum content.
Interesting. Good to know.
Trying some more testing with Dry Moly.
Cheers
Got mine and absolutely love it!! Keep up the awesome vids.
Noice!
Will do!!
I had the same dream once, but they threw Oatmeal Creme Pies rather than pickles. All Hail The Sun Goddess Little Debbie.
